View Full Version : Fuzzy, Buzzy Bass Speaker?

My new bass speaker fuzzes a lot, and it drives me batty. I mean mental. I have to unplug it, then. But obviously I want to hear the bass in songs.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or did I just buy too cheap of a speaker? :p
I've tried messing with the equalization on my itunes, but have only been able to improve it slightly.
I thought I'd ask all you members of the Super Music Squad. Or perhaps some members of the Super Computer Squad would have some suggestions.

No, it's not acting up, that's just the way it has always been.

Uh...they were cheap...Micro Innovations speakers. Not as cheap as my last speakers, though. But my last speakers only had 2, and none were a bass speaker.

sidenote - I love the way bass is a fish as well. The word makes me laugh.

fish-related words are pretty great in general. i love that there is a fish disease called "ick." ick!

Me, too! But I didn't love the fact that the only fish I ever got died from ick.

When my friend told me her fish had ick -
"ick?"
"ick."
"what do you mean, ick?"
"ick, it's called ick"
"really? that's the real name? Ick?"
"YES. "

yeah, i've lost a good number of fish to ick. i also lost a hamster to cannibalism ... my bro's hamster was apparently too hungry to wait for breakfast one night!

it was disgusting and traumatizing! i was 7 at the time. RIP, max!

hahaha, i never saw that connection but now i totally do! reminds me of the time my friend and i bought a jar of gerber hotdogs and re-labeled it "baby penises" ... and then accidentally left it on her parents' dinner table. try explaining that one!

That would have been so hilarious to me and my friends. Obviously.

Okay, I have to do this paper, quit saying funny things.:p
Plus, the south park is on where Mr. Garrison gets plastic surgery and turns into David Hasselhoff and they keep playing "Shadow Dancin'" by the BeeGees whenever he comes on.

I've got the same problem with a couple of speakers in my car. everyone said oh you've got a great system...comparable to Bose...so I didn't replace them and now I'm wishing I had. I need to take the car in to get it fixed.

I have Boston speakers...

Amber...roll the low cut down to between 50-80Hz...that'll give you more lows...sometimes people turn the low cut up to 100+ and it sounds crappy. If you're still getting buzz, turn the volume to about 5 or 6 and see if you get a good "thump"...playing "dreams" is a good test. If you're still getting fuzz or an popping sound, the cone might be busted on the sub.

I don't know what that means. Where do I "roll the low cut down"?
If the cone were busted, where is it and how do I check?

I don't have a volume "5" or "6", but I think I know what you mean.

Thanks, Demon - someone finally trying to help me!

Ok you probably have a "passive sub" which means: 1) you dont plug it in (it doesnt have its own power source) and 2) you typically don't have control over the hi cut (it's a frequency knob which allows you to adjust how much low end you actually get thru the speaker...i.e 40 HZ to 120HZ usually)
If you set it to 60 HZ for example, you get more "bassy" low end from it...you set it to 100 and you get more high frequencies in the sub...which is no good

....the volume knob should be there regardless. The "cone" is part of the speaker itself, if it's busted it gives you that popping, ugly sound when the speaker "hits"

Sounds like you probably got a bum sub. Sounds like a bad sandwich.

Amber, I dont know if this will help you or not but I remember the OLD DAYS when speakers used to get fuzzy and vibrate badly....and an old trick we used to do was to take off the front grill and inspect the actual fiber of the speaker and if it was torn or looking like it was ready to tear, we'd paint it with clear nail polish to sort of glue it back into place. The idea is you need the speaker itself to all be one piece, not torn etc.....and clear nail polish is light enough, yet strong enough to hold the paper in place. (it looks like paper to me!)

does that make sense?

here's a thought: take off the front grill/faceplate and watch the speaker as the music plays. oftentimes you can see the damage at the really heavy bass parts.

see what you think....

I'm not sure it's severe enough that the cone is broken. But again, how do I check if it's broken? Besides the sound of it. And the volume nob is on a remote line that comes from the parent speaker, not actually on any of the speakers. I'm sure that doesn't matter.
And you're right, one of the small speakers plugs into the power source, then the sub.
Um...did you give me any more advice, here?
This will sound weird, but the speaker doesn't buzz on "Heat of the Moment" but it does on everything else....  "And when you're looks are gone and you're a-lone!"
Okay, maybe it just depends on how the song was recorded or something? SOTM sounds fine....
Yargh! This is so retarded.
Thanks, Brandon. :xoxo:

Okay, I have you on ignore, but I just took you off since it's obvious you were giving me some kind of advice.
My speaker doesn't have a grill, it has cloth. I'm loathe to rip the cloth off. Yeah, there's no way to get the front off.

Dang, it was great for SOTM and Angel, but for Brown Eyes and Never Make Me Cry it's torturously buzzy!

sometimes you can get in from behind. I had speakers that had a sort of cloth front but I got in from behind and was able to see the actual speaker. true, it takes some doing but it can be done. I remember one time I used a screwdriver and pulled out the staples that held the back in place....I really think your problem is the actual speaker fabric/fiber itself. and all you need to fix it is clear nail polish.

your only other alternative is to buy new speakers.....because I dont think this is an equalizer type problem.....at least not from what you described...

ps: Im not ALL bad.

I checked, the back is one solid thing. Lame. I can feel the speaker through the cloth, but not to tell if it's broken. If I cut the cloth, will it ruin the speaker?
Thanks.:wavey:

The speaker is a hard round ball encased in rubber. I can't see anything on it that would make it buzz. :(
That sucks, I was all excited when I got my new cheap speakers...

Cutting the cloth only ruins the look of the speaker (if you're careful).

but, Ive had cheapie speakers in the past and there was ALWAYS a way to get in. only you know how best to do that because only you know how they are made etc. sometimes you can part the frame with a screwdriver
that is: where the cloth wraps around the frame and joins the rest of the speaker, you might be able to separate the two parts.

Im really really convinced you've got a torn/ripped speaker and the truth is, the more you play stuff, the worse its gonna get. You've got to get to the innards of this and mend it before any more damage is done.

See if you've got a separation point between where the body of the speaker meets the actual cloth covering If I could post a drawing I would, but Im not sure how to draw it.....

if you DO have a separation point, see if you can widen it (gently) with a screwdriver.....sometimes its only a few staples holding the pieces together.

Thats weird, I cant even visualize something like that???
The only cheapie speakers Ive ever seen are like boxes......

I guess I cant help you.

IF by chance you find a way in, do yourself a favor and inspect the actual speaker itself..... if it is torn, mend it with nail polish. a few coats ought to do it.

No, it wasn't torn. It's moot now, I killed the speaker. I was using one of the giant drill bits my dad got me to drill into the back, and I accidentally severed the wire.
It's weird, the back of the speaker (the part inside) said "WELL" on it. Just WELL.
I guess I'll take that as "WELL, you moron, now you really have to get new speakers"
Okay, it's not as bad as I thought. I can still hear the bass from one of the other speakers when I adjust the equalizer. It was on low bass. Now it's normal. I may actually not cry.  Sure, the vocal is exceptionally prominent, but that's better than fuzzbuzz.

Thanks everyone! Well, I guess thanks Irishgrl and Demon.

DRILL BIT????? I never progressed beyond a screwdriver or hammer...

IM sorry that happened.............sometimes a loose wire can cause a vibrating sound too.............

gosh........Im at a loss for words (for once).........

I edited my post a bit.
But yeah, it's just a really easy rechargeable hand held drill, my dad got me a bunch of different bits for it. I'd never used the really giant ones before. It's about as hard to use as making toast. You put the drill bit in the hole, tighten it up, and there's two buttons - one that makes it go, and one that changes the drilling direction. I asked him for it one birthday because I was doing all these home projects where I put things on my walls (like shelves) and it was very difficult to make holes. It's been so handy since. Some parts of my wall are too hard to just screw something in manually. Yep, I loves me drill. Thanks, Dadlo!
Oh, and I actually started drilling into the back because I lost a pencil in the speaker and couldn't get it out through the hole it went in from. The speaker had this hole at the top. I mean, it was designed that way. I stuck a pencil in because I wanted to see how deep the hole was, then lost control of the pencil.
God, this sounds like a story of a moronic three year old who stuck a peanut up his nose....

yeah it does actually but at the same time, its also kinda sad :distress:

Im really sorry your speaker is now dead..........can you get cheapie replacements that just plug in? I mean, that is prob best?

now about the other suggestion, the "equalizer" one...do you have an equalizer?? are you able to tinker around with the sound output?

irishgrl
05-13-2006, 12:12 AM
one more thing:

I know its too late because you say this speaker is dead but........

sometimes the only way to tell you have a tear or a weak place in a speaker
is to WATCH it while you have something playing.

I know its too late to tell with this speaker but........nothing is ever lost.

you can use this experience to help you with problems the NEXT time....

thats what I did......I went thru a few sets of cheapie speakers before I realized what worked and what didnt......

amber
05-13-2006, 12:18 AM
yeah, I just said I put the equalizer to "rock" and it sounded fine. And yes, I can adjust it manually as well, which is what I did when ol' Fuzzbuzz was still alive. The equalizer is on my itunes. And these are the cheap speakers. I mean, there are still two nice little speakers left of the set. They'll do fine until I can save up 30 dollars for some more cheap speakers....

It's not that sad...
You know the speaker was really pissing me off if I tore off the cloth, and started drilling into the back.

My rooms are really small, too, and I have a record player in the front, so I don't really need a bunch of speaker in my life, and neither do the people who live under me or next to me....:D

Oh, and I said there were no tears in the speaker, I was watching it. It was a solid round ball surrounded by rubber to hold in in place on the wood. It looked fine. The back of it looked fine too, except for the cut wire...
