View Full Version : Least favourite album?
Amber's comment in the TISL thread got me wondering: What is everyone's least favorite Stevie album, and why? Is it the production, the music, the songwriting, her voice? One specific song that you just can't stand? Her hair looks goofy on the cover?
Take off the kid gloves! You know there's one that you just can't stand!

For goofiest ugliest cover I would pick Timespace. But I like Timespace, for obvious reasons.
TISL - voice way too limited. Still some good songs, though. Love the beginning addition on Planets.
Wild Heart used to be my least favorite album, but suddenly I liked more of it. Now I like it all pretty well except Gate and Garden. Sable on Blond is still questionable, but I recently found some subtle redeeming qualities. The thing about Wild Heart is, it's a vocal tour de force. Her voice had gained extra color, and lost a bit of it's range - but for me that worked for the better, as she still had quite a range.
I have to say, though, I like about the same number of songs on all her albums.

I don't mean to start the Street Angel hate, because there are good things about that album, but her voice, choice of songs AND the cover art are easily her most uninspired.
The worst thing about it for me is her cover of Just Like A Woman. I'll never understand how she got got Bob Dylan to play on that. I mean he must have heard it.
Unconditonal Love is also one of her worst song choices ever, thankfully she didn't write it (the blame falls on Sandy Stewart at her most sickly sweet). "The one condition of love, is that there are none at all" apparently.

Ouch! Shot through the heart, and you're to blame!
I really like JLAW. Actually, though, I think I may have been shocked when I first heard it, as well. :p I like that the lyrics sound appropriate for Stevie. But also, I remember being embarrassed that she switches to first person. It's like, yes, the lyrics may reflect you, Stevie, but it seems crass and overbearing and self absorbed to actually switch it to the first person.
Oh, and Track - the name is "maybe unconditional love will change your mind".
The worst thing about it for me is her cover of Just Like A Woman. I'll never understand how she got got Bob Dylan to play on that. I mean he must have heard it.
Do not attempt to understand the Bob. This is the guy who decided to dedicate his face along with one of his darkest blues numbers to a Victoria's Secret commercial, and who now plays LL Cool J songs on his "Theme Time Radio Hour."
I actually like the cover of Street Angel, Stevie's got a real understated sexiness on it. Way better than the utter silliness that was her previous few album covers.

Rock a Little Hands Down. Awful album from the wonderful Stevie Nicks. None of her other albums approach being as bad as this one. The much maligned Street Angel while not my all time favorite like Curtis, is still very good in my opinion. Although none of her albums unfortunutly ever matched the greatness of Bella Donna and Wild Heart, unless you count Enchanted Disk 3.

Yay, I'm glad someone at least said that. I agree.
Trackie, trackie, trackie - those two are sooooo far from being her worst released tracks. C'mon. C'MON!!! ;) :xoxo:
You are clearly suffering from a state of "cover bias". :p Understandable, considering who the coverees are (brilliant), but biased nonetheless.
Also, about Bob. Musician is his job, maybe he needs to make money from it?

I do think Just Like A Woman may be her worst officially released recording. Although I Still Miss Someone does come a close second.
Rupert Hine: "You know Stevie, what this Johnny Cash cover really needs is you sounding really lethargic... oh and a cod reggae beat!"
Worst ever released are Docklands - Greta - Cry Wolf - Fire Burnin'

I don't think the Bobster needs any money but he is an old pal of Stevie's so I guess that explains it.

Yes, Desert Angel is one. Maybe Unconditional Love Will Change Your Mind. TMMS. A couple others on OSOTM. I think one or two more on TISL...er, Candlebright, Every Day.
Wait, I wasn't talking about Bob doing Stevie's thing for money, I was talking about the advertisers having his songs. For money. why else would he let adverts use his songs? Unless he didn't have the rights?

I think the only ad he's let his music be used on was Victoria's Secret, and from what I understand, he said a while back, he'd only do an ad if it was for Victoria's Secret. And they took him up on it. I don't think it was a money thing, rather a gorgeous-models-in-their-underwear kind of thing.

What do you think Stevie's most terrible recordings are then? (Officially released that is). Love's A Hard Game To Play? That would be the one. Oddly enough, it's just about a perfect melding of shlock form (you could grow weeds to that tempo, & get a load of that luscious interplay between zonked lead vocal & zonked lead guitar) & shlock content ("wake up, my sweet darling/there's something I've got to say to you tonight" or "love's a hard game to play/no matter what they say). That makes it pure shlock art.
Even a Mae West impersonator wouldn't do that one. But. Stevie. Did. :distress: The "managers" who told her she needed to record such a monstrosity--or else she'd "never have a career again"--couldn't possibly have believed it. So what, one wonders, was their motive? It had to have been nefarious. They actually *did* want to destroy her & any vestiges of her former wondrousness. The Devil himself couldn't have picked a more efficient method.
"Love's a Hard Game to Play" is Stevie's actual Fall From Grace.

Least favourite? And people are gonna hate me for this. Bella Donna. That's ridiculous, I know, but it's true. Some absolutely stellar tracks -- Edge of Seventeen, Outside the Rain, and SDMHA has grown on me -- but the rest is pretty uninteresting. I mean, it's nice, it's easy, but it has little of the fire that her other albums have. If that makes sense. And The Highwayman? Don't get me started on The Highwayman. :( :sorry:
: ducks for cover :
Now a word in defense of Street Angel -- I love the cover. Understated sexiness indeed. Sure, there are some dreadful songs. Basically most of the second half. But in there are some real, underrated gems. Docklands? Why does everyone hate Docklands?
Unconditional Love ... I shudder to think.
And may I ask -- what is it with Desert Angel that people don't like? That song made me cry. It's so poignant and so painfully relevant. Not to mention it sounds terrific.

Bob Dylan has released 40-something albums, and he's one of the most-covered songwriters on the planet, plus he tours constantly, so he's not in need of any cash. He's just Bob Dylan. There's no answer. Why is Bob Dylan in this Victoria's Secret commercial walking around some vaguely Italian landscape? Who knows, dude, he's Bob Dylan, he can do whatever he wants. It's almost a cliche at this point to say Street Angel, so my choice is Rock A Little. This album is a complete mess for me. I like "If I Were You," No Spoken Word," and "Has Anyone...", and that's pretty much it. "The Nightmare" is aptly titled. This is among her worst songs ever. "Imperial Hotel?" No, thanks. "I Sing for the Things" has some nice moments lyrically, but, musically, it is banal. Vocally, she was at a low point on this record. I can't stand that helium voice on "Talk to Me." And that album cover. :distress:

Street Angel simply for the fact that it has the least amount of songs I adore. I only love 3 - Kick It, Street Angel, and Docklands (love the music, lyrics whatever). Blue Denim is pretty good but the others are completely uninspired, mediocre songs.
*Unconditional Love demo kicks ass!
Bella Donna is my second least favorite for the same reason, least amount of songs I love. BD only has 3 of my favorites, Bella Donna, How Still my Love, and Edge. It all comes down to what album has the most songs I like or dislike.

Street Angel is my least favourite Stevie album - not to say it is awful, but 'worse' than the other albums.
The song 'Street Angel' itself is nothing short of brilliant, 'Maybe Love' 'Unconditional Love' 'Greta' 'Blue Denim' 'Kick It' and a few others are cool - but over-all the album is blah.
I don't think it is so much the pictures that are awful on SA - its the DESIGN that looks like it was made on microsoft publisher 1995 that is appauling :sorry:
But if Street Angel is as bad as Stevie is going to get, then we are lucky she hasn't really been all that bad at all...

My least favorite album is OSOTM, although there are highlights (Rooms on Fire, Ooh My Love). Her voice here is not that bad. She still shows some emotion and strength and hasn't yet slipped into the "Klonopin Monotone" of Street Angel. My problem with this album is the production and sluggishness of the songs. She never rocks out. It's all keyboards, with the occasional guitar here and there. I think it works on some songs but Rupert Hine really should have displayed a little more variety in his production. I just don't care for the overall sound. But I do love the cover :p

As for the worst album, for me it's a tie between Rock A Little (because of the production, not the songs) and The Other Side Of The Mirror; again, not because of the songs, because of the "production and arrangement by Rupert Hine"; as I've said before, I think of TOSOTM as "The Rupert Hine Show with Special Guest Stevie Nicks".

My answer is very simple, I hate the music. If I don't like the music to the song I won't like the song no matter how great the vocals and/or lyrics are. So that's all it comes down to for me. I don't like the sound of the song or the melody. Verses and choreses do nothing for me. Just blah, I get nothing and immidiately want to fast forward to the next song. You may ask "why" I don't like the music and there really isn't an answer in this particular case. It's like certain foods, either you like them or you don't. It's your brain chemistry, it's not really a choice a lot of the time. Ok I'm way over analyzing here, back to pych 101 lol.

Jeezus. Stevie was seriously Klonopinned out of her gourd to record a song written by Bret Michaels. I still can't believe she had to get vocal help from Eliza Jane to sing that song. And in the end she still sounded like a cow straining to pull its hoof out of the mud.

Have you heard any live versions? Even more whoroneous, especially the one from Arsenio Hall. Stevie's a man, baby! I don't think I could sing that low if i tried.

Forgot to mention Leather and Lace. I think this is my least favourite song of all....
That Made Me Stronger isn't a hot one for me either. It's just a bit uninteresting...
And what's this about the cover of OSOTM? Tranny? Get outta here....!
I must confess..I never liked Leather & Lace!

I think Rock A Little is her worst album. Other than "Talk to Me", there really isn't much on there to crow about.
What is up with love for "That Made Me Stronger" and "Docklands"???     Those two songs suck assssssssss.

wow..really?Yep. It really stood out to me on the radio ("Talk To Me" was everywhere that winter), and I fell in love with that sound. Getting 'Rock A Little' for Christmas sealed the deal. Her vocals on that album and 'Tango' are among my favorites... in all their gritty, scratchy, raspy, reedy glory.
In my mind, that's the quintessential Stevie sound.

Stevie was seriously "Klonopined out of her gourd" to record an entire album with Rupert Hine (the king of lazy synth elevator music). Somehow, it gets forgotten around here that she was on Klonopin then, too. She was really in her own little world then; just listen to the interviews for OSOTM. And every one of those songs could have been better without Hine.
And "That Made Me Stronger" does not "suck assssssss". But I can understand, because everything that's been said about it is exacty how I feel about "Rooms On Fire" (boring!).

My least favorite has to be Other Side of the Mirror. I only listen to a couple of songs off that one. (AKA: Whole Lotta Trouble, Long Way To Go, Rooms On Fire). The rest are just.....blah....

Thank You!! Am I the only one that thinks that the font looks like any you would find on a house-hold computer programme??? And that square cuts around the pic of Jessica inside is SO bad...
that pic just makes me cry LOL
the ONLY excuse i would accept is that Jess herself cut it out......at age ...3?
that cropping is APPALLING!

i happen to LOVE street angel album. and i think its because with all the total depression and pain stevie was in at the time of making the album... for her to give her total time for us fans .... i love her for it. and i think we should totally thank Stevie for doing that for us. if anything its her one album that she strained to make .

I'm still tempted to say The Wild Heart is my least favorite. I only like about half the songs on it...although Sable on Blond has grown on me, shockingly enough. Bella Donna, RAL, and TISL are my favorites now, I think.

I'd have to go with Street Angel. It just doesn't grab me, I don't know how to explain it. TOSOTM would probably be second.
Now covers? I think TISL might be my favorite. Worst is TOSOTM. Doesn't even look like Stevie. :sorry: The pic on the back of the album should have been the cover. That one is hot.

For me, it's street angel. I don't hate it like some ppl, it;s just not that good at all, esp in her worst klonopin days. Did she go into rehab after the album was released, or after the tour?

It was all quite a startling restorative to the previous six or eight years of down-in-the-dumps, zonked-out & really boring Stevie.

Fun times. the street angel era really sucked 4 most of the part, but i'll admit she gave a few good perormances on that tour. such as the edge of 17 when she took her mic off the stand.

Creepy. I was just thinking about this last night, watching a DVD and wondering what it might be like if she were to do that. Sort of as surprising as when Elton John did that -- though with him I guess it was a bit less easy! Being a pianist and all that. Anyway. She did that? Wow.

I TOTALLY agree!!! The RAL demos are probably my favorite Stevie music, although they were never offically released. RAL was my first Stevie album I bought, due in part to hearing Talk To Me over and over. I figured, hey, I like that song, I'll get the album, not knowing much else about Stevie except from the Fleetwood Mac album my older brother had bought. So the RAL time frame will always be my favorite!!

Well I'm sure by my screen name everyone knows my fave Stevie solo song...however....
I love everything she has done...just depends on the mood I'm in.
I am used to belonging to the group of freaks LOL, loving SA and my fave album being TOSOTM.
Since Street Angel has always received different attention and comments, I must say that there are a few songs in particular that amaze me that people don't like them  "Kick It", "Maybe Love Will Change Your mind" and "Listen to the Rain"....everyone is entitled to their fave/least fave Stevie album opinion ;) But those are my ULTIMATE faves on that record...and by the way...if you've never driven down the freeway blaring "Listen to the Rain", you're MISSING OUT!! :] I can recall several San Diego shows I've driven to over the years and done just that!! AAAAAAND yes!!! Docklands KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :blob1: (I sound as if I'm giving my students advice! LOL)

Mine is a tie between Street Angel and TISL. With TISL, I honestly can't stand her voice. It's just too deep for me. As for SA, I can listen to maybe three songs without wanting put the CD in the shredder. As for the cover, it and TOSOTM tie for the worst. She looks too depressed for words. It's almost if you stare at it long enough you'll start having suicidal thoughts.
Listen to the rain is an awesome song it is one of those songs that has to be belted out loud to really appreciate it for me every CD she has released has some very dodgy songs on it that i go what the hell are you singing about. I think the best disc she has is disc 3 from Enchanted. I do really hate highwayman, still miss someone, fire burnin, nightmare, juliet, unconditional love, gate@garden, but then i think about all the other great songs and i can forgive her because she has written and sung more great songs compared to the bad ones but that can be said about almost every singer they have all done songs that to be honest are complete **** but when you consider the great ones @ good ones there a lot more of them than bad ones and she will always be the best hands down without a doubt. Looking at the album covers i just noticed that on the RAL she almost has a smile on her face where as all the others she is pouting apart from TISL when she is walking away but no matter how many bad songs there are she always pulls a great one out and those are the ones that stay with us and give us all total joy listening to them. and thats why we are all here talking about her cause she is the best and totally unique and sexy as hell.

Nice post. That's basically what I say, except I like fire burning, and unconditional love is actually called maybe unconditional love will change your mind. Otherwise I agree.
Thankyou for the response to my post i really appreciate it but you like me are the same we are all here to talk about and appreciate the one person that has touched us more than any other singer and that is Stevie, I do not know what it is she has and to be honest i do not want to know but she has a hold over me and all the rest of her fans because she has something that is totally unique and individual to her, It is not just her voice or the songs she sings or even her presence onstage but all these things added together plus a touch of something that most singers do not have which is to me being absolute genuine nothing manufactured nothing practiced, From stevie it comes from the heart and the soul. She does it not for money or fame but because it is something she believes in and something she feels that she needs to share with the rest of the world. She opens up her heart and soul on every song and that is totally intoxicating, She leaves herself open to ridicule and recieves love and devotion. To me she is Music and i feel privaleged to be able to say, Yeah i get it.

Least favorite has to be Street Angel. It is just so depressing to me. I tried to listen to it all the way through and began to feel so lonely that I just turned it off! lol. And since that day a few months ago, I still haven't put it back in. Yeah, I like Destiny and I like Rose Garden, but anything else is just blah. Maybe I should give it another try, but until then, I'm ok with listening to Bella Donna and Wild Heart on repeat.

I can't stand Street Angel. Partly because it was the klonopin haze record and partly because it had potential to be at least a nice, solid record and it missed on so many of its opportunities to shine. I absolutely hate "Docklands" and "Destiny." Both are flat-out awful. I like MLWCYM on that CD and occasionally one or two other songs.
I'm not a big fan of OSOTM but I love "Long Way To Go," which I think is one of her better songs. I also like "Doing The Best I Can (Escape From Berlin)" for some strange reason.
