View Full Version : Should they?

Let's face it, Mac has put several "best of" type albums/sets out over the years. Do you think they should do one more, to commemorate the 40th anniversary? I've heard of other artists doing massive box sets (someone help me out with an example please) that had lots of great material for diehard fans - should Mac do it?
I'm not talking about another Very Best Of, or another Chain box set. I'm talking a huge (expensive) set, with material from all eras of the band. I'm talking several CDs & a few DVDs. I'm talking old unreleased live stuff, photos, old TV appearances, awards show footage...
What does everyone think - should they bother? Would you buy, even if it was $100 or more? What would you want included?
I would love it, :D but it would have to be the grandaddy of them all. I'm torn - I don't know if I'd prefer them to remaster every officially released album & just put those in the set, or if I'd rather they do compilation CDs (similar to The Chain but better.)
I do know that I would want a bit of everything (starting from Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac all the way up to today, and yes, including work with Welch, Bekka, Jeremy, Rick & everyone else I am not going to list every single name Chili so get off my back man...)
DVDs. Hmmm. Old live footage from the 60's would be cool. I've only seen a few TV appearances - is there video of live shows floating around amongst you guys? Again, I'd like all eras of the band to be represented. I think Rosebud is a must, so is the Tusk Doc & Destiny Rules. Give us the full length Mirage concert (while I'm at it, give us the full length show from the Tusk doc. too.) TITN DVD? Well, if we must, we must. I'll allow it.

Yes please
I mean, who WOULDN'T want this? That's the better question :D
Your inclusion of DVD's intrigues me. I would like DVD's of rare video including tour footage, stuff from the documentaries (making of albums, etc), and obscure performances and appearances. THAT? would be fab to have all in one collection. I'd pay over $100 for that alone.

At this point, I would prefer if they went about reissuing the rest of the Reprise albums - the remastered album on one disc, bonus material (including demos, outtakes, live tracks, whatever they can find, really) on a second disc.
As for DVDs, I don't know how much quality video footage there is of anything pre-1975. There's a VHS of various Green era appearances; they ought to release that on DVD.
On the other side of things, they could put together a really great multi-disc set of the post-Welch, pre-Dance years. One disc with all the music videos, plus Rosebud and stuff like that. One disc with the Tusk documentary. One disc with the Mirage concert. And maybe stick the Tango DVD on the end for good measure. You could sell that 4-DVD set for fifty or sixty bucks and I bet a lot of people would buy it.
In general, though, I'd much rather see them put out many more individual releases as opposed to some behemoth box set. Because not everybody is me or Steve or Steve or whoever else; not everybody is interested in every era of the band, and throwing it all together in one big expensive set is going to piss off more people than it pleases. But a steady flow of smaller releases over the next several years would be fantastic - keep gradually reissuing the albums with bonus discs, release some archival live sets of either the Rumours era or the Welch era or even the Green era (because you can never have enough of that stuff), whatever. Keep tossing us little stuff like that, I'll be happy.

I agree - that would be cool. But maybe they could just do what the Eurythmics did and remaster all the albums and put them in a box set

I forgot a few things. It should also contain all those live albums from the Peter Green years (how many of those things did they make, anyway?), the 1980 Live album, and oh, about ten of the best complete concert recordings from the BN years they could get their hands on. Plus the Buckingham Nicks album. All in DD 5.1. Okay, so bring the retail price up to $449.99. I'm game as long as I don't have to buy another Fleetwood Mac recording in my life. For $699.99 it could also contain every solo album released by every member of the band since 1967. Unfortunately, by that point, you'd need a forklift to get it off the shelf.
Of course, they might want to jack it up to $999 and throw in a firearm of some sort. You'll need one once your angry neighbor upstairs get sick of listening to nothing but Fleetwood Mac for weeks on end.

I would buy it no matter how much it was. Hopefully they'll have the good taste to make it good.

You mean the stuff that's been released in the past decade or so? There's three discs worth of Boston Tea Party stuff, two discs of BBC stuff, disc 2 of Show-Biz Blues, Shrine '69, and that London '68 concert that seems to float around under four or five different titles and varying sound quality. So that's eight discs. Ten if you throw in the Madison Blues set, which is all Kiln House era stuff.
Honestly, though, Stevie and Lindsey fans, if a huge box set of all of Fleetwood Mac's Reprise albums (15 of them up through Time and including Live) were released, everything remastered with a disc of bonus material for each album, listed at a bargain price of $250 - would you really buy it? Or would you complain that they were ripping you off, making you buy eight whole albums plus bonus material that you don't want?

My vote is that they continue with the "Vaudville Years" type releases. Get the studio outtakes/demos and rare live recordings from a particular period, have decent liner notes, and lots of rare pictures. I hope we see at least two or three "Vaudville Years" type compliations in the next few years that cover the Bob Welch era. Then the Stevie/Lindsey era. Finally the Billy era (and, there's a LOT from that era that was never released).
I'd love to see every TV performance, video, and commercially released video available. I'd hope they'd also take the "Vaudville Years" approach on this, too. While getting the rights for something like this would be a great challenge, "The Early Years" video compilation from the Peter Green days shows that it IS possible.
I'm not as big a fan of the remastering as most, save for a few albums that have always sounded horrid on CD. "Bare Trees" and "Mystery To Me" sound fine as-is. The white FM album sounded fine to me, too. I just bought the remaster for the one song I didn't already have.

Yes please! Do you think this is likely to happen, Steve? Does anybody have any idea if something like this is even on the drawing board?

Excuse me...I need a towel to wipe up all the drool. Especially with your additional suggestions in your other thread.

I got into this band because of hearing the B/N era stuff. But I'm interested in getting my hands on the other albums from the other eras of the band. It's a bummer to never be able to discuss anything pre-Bare Trees, and the albums are a little hard to find in stores. Yes, I know, amazon/ebay...but no credit card = no online shoping.
My point is, If I could get all of the albums for $250, I'd buy it.

Do they have Borders in Canada? Whenever I'm at a Borders in the US I almost always see copies of Future Games, Then Play On, the Boston Tea Party discs, etc. in the Fleetwood Mac section. And there's always a copy of The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions in the box set area. (Now that's a good deal - 6 CDs, and it can usually be had for $30-$40.)

My answer is no. No please, no more boxets or collections. Not CDs, but I would like more video material.
Though the MEgacube idea sounded cool, lol!
but it wouldn't be enough commercial and let's face it. $ is a must, not for artist but for record companies.
I support the idea of continuing re-releasing the rest of albums with bonus tracks
I thought that Blue Horizon thing was out of print.
It very well may be, but not everybody's bought all of the ones that were printed, that's for sure. I've seen it in a lot of stores in the US. You can still buy it through Amazon, as well.

I'd like to see EVERYTHING that was ever recorded on video, AND I'd like to see the Bob Welch years remastered.:blob2:

I've never heard of Borders. I don't think there's any in Canada. I tried to locate a Canadian store on the website, but they only showed American Locations.
