What is your favourite "Trouble In Shangri La" song NOW... 5 years on.
What was my favourite a few years ago isn't now, so lets have a little survey as to what we are all enjoying the most now..

This is to coincide with Trouble In Shangri La's debut 5 years ago!!

The only problem is that a poll can only have max 10 options, so i have culled
7. Love Is
8. Love Changes
9. I miss you AND

I truly love this album, its always in my car stacker even though i have difficulty singing along with it due to the key

whats the difference between song and track? do you mean lyrically and finished?I explained it really well a few days ago but I don't want to search. A song is the combination, on paper, of the lyrics & the musical structure (which includes chords, key & time signatures, vocal or melody line & dynamic indications/markings, if any). A track is a fixed sonic form of a song (or other composition) that requires specific technology to hear (for example, you need a CD player to play a track on a CD).

A track is a snapshot of a song at a specific moment in time, & does not vary. A song can be performed at any moment in time, in any number of conditions with any number of variables operating.

I can go to my piano right now & play the SONG rhiannon--with any number of variables operating, such as tempo & style--but I cannot play the track rhiannon on my piano.

so I like the SONG Love Changes the best, but I like the TRACK It's Only Love the best. But of the songs/tracks you listed, I like Everyday the best as both track & song.

Christ, I'm wordy!! :sorry: :o

 and in regards to you being wordy,.... hell yeah!! I have a brain freeze when i read your posts!!
I never knew the difference between a song and a track... now let me try to see if i remember.... a track is something that you cannot recreate the song with variables... doesn't sound the same in any other format other than what is on the album for example. And a song is something you can take away, change the tempo or vary instruments and it still sounds true. ... Am i close? :sorry:

i think you're on the right track (pun not intended) ... i think david's just saying that "love changes" is a great composition while "it's only love" is great because of how it was put together on the album. (please correct me if i'm wrong, david!)

Getting there. Think about the Grammys, where they have awards for both "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year." "Record of the Year" awards the track, the finished product, as it was sung/performed/arranged/engineered/produced for whatever album or single. "Song of the Year" awards the songwriter; it's an award about the composition itself.

Or think about covers. "Edge Of Seventeen" is a song. It has been recorded both by Stevie Nicks and by Lindsay Lohan. Those are two different tracks of the same song - arranged differently, sung differently, produced differently, performed and recorded at different times and places.

Or think about demos and remixes. "Planets of the Universe" is a song for which we know of a bunch of different tracks. There's the demo version on the Rumours reissue, there's the album version, there's the extended version, and there's the various dance mixes. Those are all different tracks.

Back to the original question: This is an easy one - "Fall From Grace." This was Stevie's most rocking track in a very long time. The music and the production are great, and Stevie's vocal is just one big four-and-a-half-minute can of whoop-ass. And the lyrics are great, they're compelling and intense, with minimal but very effective use of her usual tropes (alone in my room, high priestess, gossamer wings); and thank you to the ladies for convincing Shanks to leave all of the words in.

"Maybe I am calmer now
Maybe things are fine
Maybe I made the whole thing up
Maybe it isn't a lie
Maybe the reason I say these things
Is to bring you back alive
Maybe I fought this long and this hard
Just to make sure you survahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhve"

**** yeah. Now that's a mission statement.

TISL without a doubt, with It's Only Love a close second.

When I first heard TISL I nearly cried. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. So much emotion in the tune, it's really dark. The lyrics are just gorgeous & so descriptive. I thought to myself "she's back, baby!"

It's Only Love is one of her best vocals, so fragile & vulnerable.

I love this album... it's usually in a three-way tie for me with 'The Wild Heart' and 'Rock A Little.'

I voted for "Bombay Sapphires." There's not a single line in that song that I don't relate to, to the core of my being. I had a relationship which is perfectly summed up in those lyrics.

"You -- beloved,
Were to me -- everything that love stood for.
To love one another for a while, was enough...
It was all that I lived for.
How can I go on without you,
Can I go on without you...
I tell myself -- this time I'm going to have to move on...."

And, yes, I was eventually able to see past him to the white sands. ;)

My Top 5

1. Trouble in Shangri-La
Stevie hadn't served up a strong title track in years, so this was a proud moment. Great lyrics, great chorus, great voice. "Before the dawn of separation" still sends chills up the spine. The last 30 seconds of the song sounds a little like the end crescendo of Big Love.

2. Planets of the Universe
I haven't been too impressed when Stevie adds new lines to old songs, but the stanza "No doubt, no pain comes ever again/Let there be light in this lifetime/In the cool, silent moments of the nighttime" is brilliant and practically changes the mood of the entire song.

3. Candlebright
I love how the dark, rumbling rhythm section is juxtaposed against the light, playful mandolin.

4. Sorcerer
One word: falsetto

5. Fall From Grace
I love how the Amazon.com critic described this song: 'Unflinching, autobiographical "Fall from Grace," recorded at punk rock speed.'

5. Fall From Grace
I love how the Amazon.com critic described this song: 'Unflinching, autobiographical "Fall from Grace," recorded at punk rock speed.'
This part:

"Sometimes.... you just fall from grace............"
{machine gun drum fill} - {dark Am} - {crunchy guitar build}

that leads to the end-

"Maybe I am calmer now..."

That part- that little snippet snapshot is the absolute essence of Stevie. Dark, dark, intense darkness. Every time I hear it my entire spine is electrified.

3. Candlebright

I adore Candlebright. It's the most underrated and overlooked song on the album. The music is great, producition superior (despite the fact that I dislike Sheryl Crow), and the lyrics are stellar. This song has such a sexy feeling to it and these lyrics are some of her best IMO:
"You guide me back again
And I come when you shine
You are not my friend, no
But I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer"
So Stevie to the core!

I've often wondered that same thing myself. I don't think it's Stevie because she's not that good althougth I wish it were. It would make the demo that much more great (as if it could get any better) to picture Stevie herself at the piano sitting there singing Love Is but I was told it wasn't her. On the album version Sarah Mclaughlin is playing the piano and doing back up vocals so it's possible it could also be her on the demo or maybe it's one of the session players.

Yeah, very possible it's Sarah. Don't have the CD in front of me, but that demo was made around Street Angel, 94ish, when she and Stevie met. They did kind of a chummy interview for Interview in March '95, so that would be the right time frame for a collaboration. Maybe that's why she called Pierre Marchand and Sarah up later when it was actually time to record it.

Yes, Stevie said Love Is and TISL were the first songs written for the album, hence the '94-'96ish sounding demo.
But didn't she start writing for TISL after the dance tour which would make it 98-99? When did she meet with Tom Petty when he told her to write her songs herself (and if only she didn't write a song about that!)?
Edit: I think you may be right. I found this quote from Stevie:

Tom [Petty] can say stuff to me that nobody else can. I said, "Will you help me get started on this, help me write some songs?" And he got angry with me. He said, "Yeah, you had a couple of bad years, but you need to reinvent yourself. You're one of the best songwriters I know. You don't need help." I went home that night and told everyone, "This is it - I'm starting a new record."
~Stevie Nicks, Q magazine, May 2001
If she had a bad couple of years maybe Tom was referring to the Street Angel period and maybe she started writing TISL before The Dance and then the whole Dance thing happenned so it got delayed a couple of years. So the question is did she start writing for TISL pre-The Dance or post The Dance (the newer songs of course)? That will answer the question of when the Love Is demo is from.

Ok so I'm slightly obsessed with my Stevie Nicks chronology...The song and concept of TISL was "inspired by", written during, whatever the O.J. Simpson Trial which was 1995-1996 so it looks like TISL was pre-The Dance meaning the Love Is demo could possibly have been around this period but I tend to believe the demo that we got from the TISL sessions was later, 1999. Screw all this speculation, I'll just call Stevie and ask her.

Your least favorite? Oh Amber girl, what are we going to do with you. Yes she wrote it for her but that doesn't mean it's about her as if she's "in love with her". Here are Stevie's own words in regards to "It's only Love". Sheryl wrote a song through Stevie's eyes, that's what I get from it. Wrote lyrics that Stevie herself would say.

How did it feel to have Sheryl Crow write "It's Only Love" for you and about you?
"Well, she came up the stairs carrying her guitar, and she just sat down and played it for me. And she told me, "I went home and I just was really thinking about all your stories and all the stuff you've been through" because now that we've been friends for four years I've just about told her all the great stories, she knows them all and that's really what she wrote the song about, all my different relationships and the men that I was with and the men that I'm still good friends with and really care about. They're all still out there and around me, and she finds that pretty amazing. I think that's what inspired her to write the song you know, "sometimes lonely is not only a face that I have known." And she sees my life: I am not married, I don't have children, and I made that choice. I knew if I had children I would have to take care of them and I couldn't hand them over to a bunch of nannies. So I knew if I had a baby I would stop making music and I would start being a mom. And I decided in my life, that my mission was to make people happy. It was more important. I only just got a dog two years ago, and trained her myself. And that's the motherliest thing I've ever done."
~Stevie Nicks, Sonicnet interview, June 2001

It's the album with the least vocal gymnastics, the dullest. I still like 4-5 songs okay - I just don't think they are as amazing as previous albums, because her voice is so limited. I still like some songs on it quite a bit, though.

I voted for TISL, but it's really a tie between TISL, Fall From Grace, It's only Love, Fall From Grace, Planets Of The Universe, Love Is.:D

Fall from Grace. You could cut that passion with a knife.

I chose Fall From Grace.

It used to be Sorcerer, but I'm kind of burned out on that song, it's on too many of my compilations!

Wow, ditto!

I was just surprised, you are totally entitled to your opinion and I did not mean to knock you :xoxo: I agree with the part about the least vocal gymnastics but I think the album is a stellar compilation of songs that are amazing both lyrically and musically. I don't find it dull in the least.

Some people are shocked when they find out Bella Donna is my least favorite album behind Street Angel. It has the least amount of songs I'm in love with even though her voice is dynamite.

TOSOTM has more vocal gymnastics ? I would say that LWTG is maybe a front handspring, but other than that, it is a record of basically front somersaults, and at times, egg rolls. The vocals sound like they were recorded while she was in bed. On a four Klonipin day.

TISL at least has the "never thought we'd ever hear it again" falsetto, some wailing in the title track, and the back handspring and twist of FFG. I am not sure I agree with your assessment, Frank.

I can't bitch about you not putting I Miss You in the list because you cannot possibly put everyone's favorites when you have to narrow a list down. I have to say that it's one of my favorites for a personal reason. I used to have this friend, Justin, who was my roommate when I lived in Pittsburgh. He was so level headed and was great at helping me make important decisions and giving advice "as only he could explain it to me". He eventually moved away to New York and I to LA. I still keep in touch but since we are not in constant touch things have changed. And everytime I hear that song I think of him.

I've come to a realization about TISL. Although I often refer to it as my favorite album I dislike narly half the songs on there . I think I do this because of the songs I do like I LOVE them so much and several of them are on my top 10 list of favorite Stevie songs. Here's the album for me.

Songs I love:
Fall from Grace
Love Is
Bombay Sapphires
Candlebright
TISL

Songs I really like, but not love:
Sorcerer
Love Changes
Planets of the Universe (although lyrically it's a love)

Songs I don't like:
I miss you
TFFT
It's only Love
That made me Stronger
Every Day

I'm not sure how an album with 5 songs I don't like could be my favorite but it must be because the rest makes up for it. Hope that makes sense.

No, that totally makes sense. I have favorite albums, too, but honestly I like almost the same number of songs on each album.

They're all about equal to me. So I next decide whether I like the album based on whether I like the SOUND of it.

All her albums have songs I like and songs I dislike (some more than others) but surprisingly I like every song on RAL. That's the only album where I can say there's not one song I dislike (although ISFTT comes close to a dislike).

In that case why don't you base it upon how sexy Stevie looks on the cover :p.

But didn't she start writing for TISL after the dance tour which would make it 98-99? When did she meet with Tom Petty when he told her to write her songs herself (and if only she didn't write a song about that!)?
Edit: I think you may be right. I found this quote from Stevie:

If she had a bad couple of years maybe Tom was referring to the Street Angel period and maybe she started writing TISL before The Dance and then the whole Dance thing happenned so it got delayed a couple of years. So the question is did she start writing for TISL pre-The Dance or post The Dance (the newer songs of course)? That will answer the question of when the Love Is demo is from.
TISL was a 7 year process. It went through a few incarnations before it got handed over to Sheryl Crow..(who also did not know what to do with FFG & TISL..hence John Shanks.) It started with Dallas Austin as the original producer in 95. Stevie started writing after SA Tour ended in 94. The first 2 songs written were Love Is & TISL. Stevie & Lindsay put off there solo projects to do The Dance. Then after the Tour..Stevie finished up Enchanted went back to work on TISL..the released it.

Ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and her voice positively dances when she sings "some days lonely is the only" and IMO during the rest of that song.

TISL is not my fav. record of hers because I think in many tracks her voice is heavily produced and the vocal tracks are not as good as the demos (see Love Is, BS, TISL (though that final cut is still amazing) . However, the record as a whole is very good IMO.

However, the record as a whole is very good IMO.The entire package shows a certain care & commitment to quality in presentation, layout, &c., that were heartening because there was a growing sense that the physical residue of Stevie's career (& even Fleetwood Mac's career) was showing signs of unkemptness.

The engineering, too, is high-quality on TISL; it rivals the work Shelly Yakus used to do for Stevie (where levels blend seamlessly from one track to the next & there are no aural jolts or quantum chasms).

Thanks for the info! I had a feeling about that since she related the TISL title to the OJ trial. I'm just curious if that Love Is demo we have is from the 95-96 era but it seems from this information it may have been but she may have done a later demo and simply written the song pre-dance (but not recorded it).
Wow Dallas Austin, the R&B producer who pretty much made TLC a super group? That would have been an interesting twist on Stevie's music. I wonder why it didn't work out...

Now that you mention it, David, TISL really was a very well-put-together package. For one, it was just a really great aesthetic that they achieved. Nice colors, nice material (the booklet, I mean - it was some kind of paper, if I recall, rather than the usual glossy plastic). The CD itself looks great, the cover is absolutely beautiful, all of the photos and art inside the booklet were done really well. Whoever did the art design on this did a fantastic job.

Wish I could say the same for Say You Will. The front and back cover designs were great, but that was about it. The CD was boring, the stock photo of the hands was a silly cliche, and those band photos in the booklet always looked a little antiseptic to me. It all looks very cold and mechanical, whereas the TISL art design really has a great warmth to it. And don't even get me started on that ugly brown hulking mess of a "special edition."

The engineering, too, is high-quality on TISL; it rivals the work Shelly Yakus used to do for Stevie (where levels blend seamlessly from one track to the next & there are no aural jolts or quantum chasms).

Chris Lord-Alge engineered the album, didn't he? Or mixed it? One of those. I remember Stevie giving him a lot of credit for tackling the task of taking a bunch of songs produced by so many different people (Shanks, Sheryl, Pierre Marchand, Rick Nowels, David Kahne, Stevie herself...) and making it sound like a unified whole, which it really does.

After Stevie emerged from her funk, a year or so after her drastically reduced Street Angel Tour, she got back into the swing of things with all sorts of plans & ideas, including concert broadcasts on TV, Lifetime cable TV programs on her life & career, more recording, &c.

This was all around 1995, so the fire was there. It just took another year or so for it to find a fireplace.

Apparently the chemistry was not there. I know she hated Thom Panunzio
who produced Street Angel. She stated that he would not let her go back
in to make changes on the record. She must have known it was not up to snuff. So..she had to let it go. I think she felt burned from the whole SA experience and it took her finding Sheryl Crow who was more nuturing to get her back in gear.
