Just wanted to chime in briefly about the aborted DVD Stevie In Aussie Land.
I completely understand the anger and frustration. I see such lesser bands release concert DVDs after each tour, and a lot more inspired creative product.

The management of FM/SN is hackneyed beyond belief. They are so out of touch with a very solid, loyal fan base -- in fact they completely ignore it. Are they so afraid to produce anything that won't sell multiple millions, that they give us very little? And when they do give it up, it's crap **** like Live In Boston.

Where's the Buckingham Nicks album?
Where's a DVD of collected videos?
Where's the DVD of the Mirage concert (entire show)?
Where's the DVD of Stevie's 1981 concert (entire show)?
Where are the resissues of Mirage, Tango etc?

Since the band has been resting on its past laurels for the last decade, why not market those laurals? Such wasted opportunities. And a real slap in the face to fans. Others posters have made comments that the band doesn't give a ****. To a certain extent I think that is true, partially because of a utter lack of objectivity. But I also put a big part of the blame on their lousy marketing/management. However that structure works, it doesn't do **** for the fans, or the band's legacy.

What other missed opportunities or cool ideas can you think of? Perhaps we can compile them and submit them....somewhere! Maybe bombard their management companies.

I largely agree with you, of course. As far as management goes, the problem with Fleetwood Mac is that there's too much of it. Everybody's got his or her own people, so if anybody ever wants to get anything done with this band, one person's people needs to talk to somebody else's people, who needs to talk to somebody else's people... The organization of Fleetwood Mac probably involves more failed bureaucracy than FEMA, and I think is a big part of the reason why nothing ever happens with this band.

So I think you're right. Plenty of blame needs to be doled out to the band members themselves, but a fair share also needs to go to the people who work for them. All of the potential releases you mentioned - none of those absolutely require significant involvement from anybody in the band. They just require somebody within the organization deciding it's a good idea and pushing to get **** released.

The reissues we got a couple years ago were are very nice packages and show what this band is capable of putting out there once people set their minds to something. But those reissues are nothing more than pity breadcrumbs if more projects don't start coming down the pipeline soon. There's so much material sitting in the vaults just begging to be released. It's beyond ridiculous that they don't release any of it. And yes, it's especially embarrassing in the face of all the great products that so many other bands are putting into the hands of their fans.

I love John, but I imagine he'd offer little more than a shrug of the shoulders and a, "Hey, have you ever tried dealing with these people? This is why I just hang back in the shadows and play bass." Or, "I really don't know anything about these projects or if the band or anyone is planning to release them."

Although who knows, if he knew how many fans are salivating for this stuff, I could see him being the one member of Fleetwood Mac who might actually get behind a push to get some of this material released.

Me neither. I don't think even if the message got to the people at the top it would do a lot of good. I'm sure they must be aware of this stuff.

I agree with most of this stuff. It's so frustrating, but realistically there is nothing we can do about it. Fleetwood Mac is big bucks for record execs. so it's puzzling how they haven't released more. I think that if we don't hear lots of news of all the things you mentioned by the 30th/40th anniversary then we're not going to get anything major at all sadly. I'm hoping that they have lots of things lined up for next year but I doubt they do because of how things seem to happen with this band.

It still amazes me that Mick wouldn't get behind this kind of thing.

From what I read in his Q&A, John has about as much idea as we do about any future releases.

I really don't get it. You'd think reissuing stuff from one of the biggest bands of the 70s would make a lot of money and appeal to a lot of people. Especially something as far reaching as a DVD containing all the videos. At a decent price, I could see a lot of mild fans picking it up at the loca Wal-Mart.

Maybe if someone put out the FM bio-pic. It would probably drum up interest and demand for more FM material, similar to Ray and Walk The Line. It's actually a bit of a dream of mine to one day write and direct a film about Fleetwood Mac...but I'm just rambling now.

It's a bummer there isn't more stuff out there. PenguinHead, to your list I would like to add the Tusk doc and the Rosebud performances.

And...why does everyone hate LIB. I mean, it could have been better I guess, but at least they released a DVD. I personally wish they had waited until later in the tour when they were doing Sara, just so I'd have a professional version of it.

I agree. I don't think John even has a manager. I also don't think he really cares about this kind of stuff. I would assume that Mick would be the one to ask & it doesn't sound like he even cares either.

I would also add to that list ANYTHING from the 1971-1974 years.

I don't think asking him is a bad idea at all. Well, maybe just expressing how much everyone would really appreciate having these things put out rather than just questioning him about it. It couldn't hurt. I think that as far as a dvd collection of videos shouldn't be released on its own though (although I'd buy it), but rather with a CD release. TVBOFM would have been a perfect opportunity to do that. Maybe if they ever re-master Mirage they will re-release the full live concert on DVD? Maybe they are just holding onto these things for after they fully retire to still have additional sources of income
It's probably just that they've made tons of money now and just really can't be bothered. :(

I also don't know why people hate Live in Boston so much. Sure, it's no Dance, but it has so much atmosphere and some really strong songs there. I loved hearing the SYW stuff performed live, it was a real thrill.

Sure, the staged actions night after night, sure, Stevie's voice isn't what it used to be, but it was very real as far as I could see.

So why?

I agree. Loads and loads of fans feel very strongly about this. There's not _much_ we can do, but there are some things, and that's one. He mightn't be able to do much, or feel inclined to get involved or start a debate about it in the crush of managers, but, you never know, might mention it in a chat with Mick one day, make a suggestion, sow a seed.

I really hope they've got lots of stuff for 07. They _have_ to do something. Surely they wouldn't pretend it's not the anniversary of Rumours, Tango and The Dance?

Yeah, this is the kind of bizarre crap that baffles and annoys the **** out of me. Does he really think more people are going to buy his ****ty wine than FM's concert DVDs? They need to get some of these concerts out on DVD, and remaster Mirage and Tango in the Night, and Stevie's first 3 solo albums (she said they were going to do that, too...I'm still waiting).

Stevie is the one I want to slap the hell out of most, but all of them seriously need to wake the f*ck up.

Like I've said before, I NEVER believe anything Fleetwood Mac or Stevie is coming out until I see it on the shelves. BTW I respectfully disagree with PenguinHead about Live in Boston. I loved it, as well as the Destiny Rules Documentary. Come to think of it, in the last 4 years there have been a fair share of releases related to Fleetwood Mac.

2002-Mick Fleetwood Story

2004-Destiny Rules

2004- Live In Boston

2005-Lindsey's soundstage

I wouldnt say that's too shabby, especially since we waited so long for ANYTHING.

I agree with paleshadow that the matter should be put to John.
If you remember, when he started answering the questions from the board he seemed to know nothing about the level of interest in the band on the Internet. Now he seems really keen to answer more questions.
Perhaps if he knew how much fans wanted certain products he would be willing to help.
Even if he is not able to do much himself, i think he would pass it on to those who can.

Yeah, maybe he'd say "hey, you self absorbed a-holes, hush up for a minute and look at what you could be doing if you stopped wankering around. Look at what our fans would buy - is there any reason we couldn't do this? Besides the fact that none of you has thought of something so obvious? I'm think I have leave it up to Penguinhead, as he broached the topic to begin with.

Maybe it can be rephrased a bit? Maybe it can just be signed 'desperate fans from the Ledge' LOL....Surely there has to be a way to get this point across to him....'sow the seed' as someone said. what the heck, it can't hurt.

During the first Q&A a couple years ago, he did request some questions that 'weren't so flattering'-- so I don't think he'd be insulted by honest expressions of frustration. And if he wants to skip it, he can skip it, big deal.

I'm not really sure if it's the band, the management, or probably both. I don't know. But whoever makes these decisions, are making crappy ones. You're right, it is discouraging when young/new acts without near as huge a following as band like Fleetwood Mac put out way more DVD releases than them. It's not that expensive to package up a DVD and put it out there. Surely they KNOW fans want it, and would buy it. I agree also if they arent going to record anytime soon, why not atleast take advantage of the situation and release a bunch of old DVD's that we've been dying for.

Why Mick will peddle wine IN PERSON at the local Grocery Store, but wont tell someone to pull out the Mirage Concert out of the vault and put it out on DVD I don't know???????Why does it have to be Mick or John or Stevie at all? It wasn't a member of the band that got the reissues out. It wasn't the band members who said, "Hey, let's release a concert for HBO & home video." It wasn't the band members who put together the 5.1 package for Rumours. It wasn't Stevie who initiated & implemented the idea of releasing her short-form videos from '81 to '86 on home video. These projects get activated & carried out by other people--probably record execs (the 5.1 thing of Rumours was the pet project of one of the band's old engineers). And those are the guys who might have no interest in repackaging Fleetwood's old stuff. All the band probably does is just initial a contract somewhere, if that.

My point is, if Mick will peddle wine at Ralphs for cash, why not tell someone to release this shiit on DVD for cash? How hard can it be for him to say "put it out". We all know he will cash in on anything, and with this its a easy lazy effort on his behalf if all the other people/companies put it out. Wasn't he the one behind the 1992 box set?

Whilst we are on thjis subject, another major cripe is why do the band release straight to DVD ports from VHS/TV as in the Tango In The Night DVD and Denstiny Rules DVD, where were the extra features:

Tango In The Night - Could have had the Full Concert, extra backstage footage

Destiny Rules: Well we know they shot masses of material and all we got was a straight port over from the VH1 show, missed oppourtunity.

And lastly I know that the Tusk DVD-A is sitting on the shelf complete, but has yet to be released, also the White Album and Trouble In Shangri-La were rumoured to be given the 5:1 treatmant by Ken Caillait. So why are these not released?

I won't be surprised if these never see the light of day, and not even because they're Fleetwood Mac products. Hybrid CDs seem to have won the day and have become the preferred format for folks looking for something better than a standard stereo CD. I just don't expect many more DVD-As to be hitting the shelves anytime soon.

I absolutely agree. There are so many great TITN era interviews out there, even a few of them put together on the DVD would have been something. Same goes for The Dance -- a little extra would have been the icing on the cake.

That's slightly unfair. DVDs were a very new technology when The Dance was released. There was no such thing as all these two-disc box-set special-features collector's-edition packages. Loading up DVDs with all kinds of extra material just hadn't occurred to most marketing departments yet.

Besides, there was something extra on The Dance DVD: five songs that you didn't get to hear on the CD.

I don't think it should be a question, but rather a request. John has been without argument the most forthcoming member of the band as far as communication with fans here. It's a great opportunity for us to express to him how much we would love to see these things released and to ask him if he has any control over it, or say in the matter to just see what he can do. You never know!

Besides, there was something extra on The Dance DVD: five songs that you didn't get to hear on the CD.Not to mention several performances that were cut from the MTV broadcast.

I think that was all a clever marketing tool. I mean why buy the DVD if you taped the entire thing from the original broadcast

Most of these live concerts air on TV in an abbreviated form (usually to make room for commercials and such)... even the Soundstage shows on PBS.

Or both

I just noticed that until the DVD came out, all songs were not available. They tend to do this in other areas as well.

That's what people tend to do though, is to start off with a compliment! i guess it's human nature. i think by now he's just accepted it. I can't exactly cut out everybody's kind words LOL. and FWIW I think many good questions have followed up the compliments!!

I think it's an understandable thing to do. I mean, the fact that they're asking these questions shows that these people have had an impact on their lives -- it's a chance to say something, anything to them and the first thing on most people list of things to say is a "Thank You".

Does that not make sense?

I'm think I have leave it up to Penguinhead, as he broached the topic to begin with.

Maybe it can be rephrased a bit? Maybe it can just be signed 'desperate fans from the Ledge' LOL....Surely there has to be a way to get this point across to him....'sow the seed' as someone said. what the heck, it can't hurt.

During the first Q&A a couple years ago, he did request some questions that 'weren't so flattering'-- so I don't think he'd be insulted by honest expressions of frustration. And if he wants to skip it, he can skip it, big deal.

whatever you guys wanna do.....

If you are looking for votes, I say "ask it!" Why not let someone in the band know what we want, even if one member can't do anything about it! I think we all want to be heard! Thank you Lis!

Does anybody want to rephrase it so it is more constructive and not offensive etc?

if not I can just take the original and tweak it a little myself; i can just sign it as 'members of the ledge' etc.

I wouldn't expect too much though. As far as I know, John has no manager, and IMO seems an unlikely candidate to raise topics like these in band meetings.....but on the other hand, it can't hurt to express an opinion shared by many in the fan community.

Here's my stab at it (feel free to sign it "members of the Ledge" if other folks approve):

Hi John! A lot of us fans were very excited by the reissues of Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk a couple of years ago. The remasters of the albums sounded fantastic, and all of the bonus material was a real treat to hear. We would be ecstatic to see similar treatment given to the rest of the band's catalogue - Mirage and Tango in the Night, of course, but also all of the band's albums back to Then Play On. For that matter, many fans are also hungering for official releases of such great long lost Mac documents as the Mirage concert video and the Tusk documentary - our old VHS tapes are all but worn out! Do you know if the band or the record label has any plans to follow through with projects like these? If not, is there any way to let them know how much Fleetwood Mac fans would appreciate seeing these albums and videos get a deluxe treatment? It seems that so many other artists from the 70s and 80s are busily remastering their entire catalogues and releasing all kinds of bonus goodies for their fans. We just want the band and Reprise to know that there is a huge market of die-hard Mac fans out there who are just dying for the opportunity to re-experience our favorite albums and videos and buy more Fleetwood Mac music to add to our collections! Thanks as always for taking the time to answer our questions with your trademark wit and aplomb!

That's an awesome synopsis.

The funny thing with the concert videos (Stevie's too) is that the band is actually losing money by not releasing them due to all the bootlegs being sold. Now that John is online, have him check eBay or MusicStack.com for "Fleetwood Mac DVD" - I have a feeling he'd be shocked.

Fleetwood Mac may no longer sell 4 million copies of a new studio album, but they have an extremely loyal fanbase who will snatch these things up on the word "go."

Nice.

You could add something about the desire for a DVD containing all the music videos. Also, bring up the ebay thing.

Thank you Jyqm! Maybe the "q" is silent, but I'm glad YOU are not! :) Lis, maybe you can ask John to pass the info along to Chris, too. It isn't that hard to release even a limited edition of these things. I bet they (Fleetwood Mac) could twist the arm of the webmasters of The Penguin and even have it sold here! So many WASTED opportunities.

Thank you again, to BOTH Jyqm and Lis for being willing to get the word out.

-LisJyqm's a good guy, Lis. He's currently finishing up his degree in something-or-other now, I think. He wants to work as a claims adjuster in a mortage insurance office, & he enjoys European cheeses & fennel casserole.
