It's tough...I really like Book of Love, Oh Diane, Gypsy of course. If could *sigh* only pick one, I'd say "Hold Me." I love the cowbell like sound of the guitar notes...I like the guitar at the end. I like Lindsey and Christine trading off on the lead vocals. Oddly enough, I don't really hear Stevie at all in the song.

Woah! Who peed in your mouth today?! You need more coconut oil in your diet, it can mend that pesky bad mood.
I know what you are saying, but it is hard sometimes to explain why you like things, and then people disagree with you and you have to justify it again, and usually no one knows what you are talking about anyway.
I mean, often that is fun, but sometimes I just don't feel like doing it.
Besides, maybe someone would have answered thoughtfully if you weren't so busy filling up your own thread with dumb stuff in order to make fun of others.
Plus, I rarely buy cereal, it makes me tired.

I think Jyqmbo has lost it. ;)

My personal favorite... hmm, it's hard to choose as I love the entire album. I'd have to say "Gypsy" though.

What do I love about it? Gosh... what's not to love? Stevie's voice sounds utterly majestic, and it absolutely soars in several places. The lyrics are wistful and evocative. The harmonies are lush. The music rises and falls with great purposefullness. And it has one of the single best codas of any Mac song, in my humble opinion.

So there you have it.

Obviously, looking at this list of songs, there are 2 types of FM fans. Some people like radio pop, of which "Hold Me" is a fantastic example. Others like the more textured, slow-growing stuff (like "Book of Love" or any of Lindsey's songs).

Stating the obvious? :sorry:

On "Mirage": "Eyes of the World" takes the prize for me. It has a great melody and delivery and a classic riff. I like "Hold Me," but it's a rather slight song, IMHO, that was made great by the arrangement and production. You wouldn't want to hear an "unplugged" version of "Hold Me."

I always seem to go for the "slow growers". Many of the beast albums in my collection were good (or even poor) on initial listens and then just became better and better. A number of "immediate" albums for me became very boring after a few listen.

As for Mac, I think Lindsey appeals to me more whereas it grows on others. I love Chris and Stevie's stuff, but Lindsey's stuff is immediatley likeable for me and manages not to get boring.

Does anyone know if she actually sang on it? Probably a backing vocal, but aren't I right that she kind of only showed up at the chateau to record vocals for her songs and then left return to her solo career? I know this was the case for Tango. I always thought that was sad. I love a lot of the songs that came out of the 80s for FM, but it's a little disheartening to think that they weren't working in the studio together as a band in the way the worked on the White Album/Rumours/Tusk.

Anyways...as for my favorite on Mirage, that's hard. I'm a pretty big fan of Mirage. I like it all except for Empire State. My favorite favorites are probably:

Book of Love - Something very emotional and angry about the vocal...I love it!
Gypsy - I prefer the extended version though. I believe it's on the Chain Box set.
Hold Me - I love the mood; happy but bittersweet
Wish You Were Here - One of the best overlooked FM/Christine tunes IMHO. Although, I guess she didn't write the lyrics, so does it really count? Love the end.

I like Mirage, except "Empire State" which I think is awful. "Hold Me" is my favorite. I love Christine's piano throughout the song & the vocal blend of Chris & Lindsey together sounds terrific. I even like that "Hold Me" outtake with just Chris, Mick & John just about as much as the album version.

I really like Mirage. Mirage was the first Fleetwood Mac album I owned/heard!

My favourite song would _probably_ be Eyes Of The World. Because I'm utterly useless at explaining _why_ I like something, I'm just going to say it's because of the "bum-bum-bum-bum bum-bum-bum-bum..." bits!!

I love Wish You Were Here as well, it's so sweet.

Mirage is totally meant to be played as a vinyl, I think. I found it in this house I was staying in with one of the choirs I'm in, and listened to it on a record player (I own a Mirage record, but not a record player!) and it was gorgeous.

The video is marvellous. I got my friend hooked on the song just by showing her the video. Every five minutes in school she was coming up and saying, "Psst, Kathryn .... can I watch the video for Gypsy again? Just ONCE more!!" Great video indeed. "Oh Diane" has become my favorite in the past year. I think it's an overlooked masterpiece, one of his best studio pieces with Fleetwood Mac. The lyrics are incredibly simplistic, but the way he describes "Diane's" love for him dissipating is genius for some strange reason. "Love is like a grain of sand/ Slowly slipping through your hand/ Oh oh whoa/ Oh oh Diane." It's very slight by very sly; buoyant music, but intensely pleasurable because of it in lieu of being obnoxious, which it easily could have become. His vocal is almost facile and seems to just smoothly and sweetly flow out of his mouth, which is notable itself after all of the screeching & screaming & yelping fits he committed to record on Tusk. The song itself seems absurdly out of place alongside cryptically inane stuff like "Straight Back" and downright annoying tracks like "Hold Me," but it still stands out as one of the best tracks; perhaps because it's so oddly placed amongst the other stuff, which is also probably why most people dislike it so much. It's a bit jarring on the album and would have fit better on Law and Order where he explored that retro sound to a fuller extent, but it's still one of the Mac's most enjoyable songs.

As a whole, I really dislike this album. It's much too safe, too Rumours-like and a huge disappointment as a follow-up to the genius that was Tusk.

That being said, I'm going to make a choice that may shock some people and say "Wish You Were Here" is my favorite. Even though it's probably the "safest" track on the whole album.

Edit: I'm sticking with my first choice, but I have to give the runner-up position to "Can't Go Back." I'm listening to the album now (first time in at least a couple of years) and realized that I had forgotten how much I enjoy this one.

I've become rather apathetic to Christine's material on this album in recent months. I absolutely despise "Only Over You," and I don't say that about too many Christine McVie songs.

"Gypsy" is a fabulous song, but I must say that my favorite is probably "That's Alright." Stevie's vocal is just divine. (Actually, I love all her vocals on this album). I love the country-feel, and I personally can relate extremely well to the lyrics.

Although many people feel otherwise, I enjoy Lindsey's Mirage contributions, particularly the 50s sounds of "Oh Diane" and "Can't Go Back."

What is it that people dislike so much about this one? It's not exactly my favorite Christine song, but it really seems to be the recipient of a lot of vitriol.

I know some people really hate the vocal melody on that (and oft-repeated) first line: "I'm out of my mind." I don't mind that part so much, although I do think that Christine's vocals on this track are a bit weak in general. But I love the music on this one. Another very successful attempt at the 50s/60s pop vibe, with some nice guitar in there too.

All of Chris' are great (I think)...if they would've just left the aforementioned "Oh Diane" on the cutting room floor and replaced it with "Goodbye Angel", that would've improved the album immensely.

Stevie was riding her Greatest Vocal Period Ever on this album. She rules this disk with all three tracks. The thing I like most about Stevie's contributions (besides her phenomenal vocal performance) is the fact that she offers such diversity. "Gypsy" is gorgeousness and bittersweet heartbreak personified. "That's Alright" is Western- not country. "Straight Back" is the perfect follow up to the material from Bella Donna.

"Only Over You" is one of my favorite Christine tracks. Vulnerable beauty and a fantastic vocal to boot. "They say I'm a silly girl, but I'm not a fool".

Lindsey just plain sucks on this album. His worst collection ever. "Empire State" is a crime that no one should have to listen to more than once. "Eyes of the World" is O. K. Otherwise, bllllleeeeeeeeeeecccccchhhhhhhhhhhhh. Mirage is the perfect example of Lindsey as brilliant producer but hideous writer.

 I'm surprised you didn't get hate posts for this. Oh well, it's only true.

My favorite song on Mirage is probably "That's Alright." Gypsy is my second favorite with Hold Me trailing closely behind. I love Buckingham/McVie collaborations---they are just grand.

So yeah, That's Alright. To me, this song showcases a perfect vocal from Stevie, I'm serious, I've never heard her voice sound more beautiful and poignant---it just SOARS! I also love the bittersweet, nostalgic sentiment winding throughout it conveying an independent, "if you love something set it free" kind of feeling. I also think it's some of Stevie's most straightforward songwriting to date.

I agree that this song features a fantastic Stevie vocal, and the production is perfectly understated to allow her voice to really soar. This is something they really ought to try out on tour next time around. Stick it in the stop-hugging-nobody-cares-anymore "Landslide" slot, with just Lindsey on guitar and harmony vocals. Or perform it with just the band (i.e., none of the peripheral orchestra, and no soulless back-up singers).

Here's an interesting Wikipedia article on Western music: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_music_%28North_America%29

The original difference is one of geography. Western music developed (wait for it...) in the west, while country music developed in the Applachians and in the south.

from that article....

Traditional Western Music used the voice, and the guitar, with other instruments as to the musician's taste, with one major exception: Percussion and percussive sounds were missing from most if not all performances

Well, I suppose "That's Alright" isn't really Western then, is it?

Anyway, it certainly is my favorite song on Mirage, for reasons that many have stated above. Stevie's voice is wonderful, and I love the more straightforward lyrics from her this time. Plus, the harmonies are gorgeous. One of the Rumours era's best, IMO.

As for Christine, my favorite of her offerings by far is "Love in Store," and part of that reason are Lindsey and Stevie's backing vocals. And poor Lindsey, I only really care for "Oh, Diane" (go figure).

Well, it's certainly got Western influences, and of course the Buckingham Nicks demo didn't have percussion, but I don't think Stevie sat down with a book on the conventions of Western music and set out to write a real traditional Western song.

Not a bad effort, but not quite sarcastic enough. "Really? I hadn't noticed," would have had a bit more bite to it.

Plus, good sarcasm always loses something if you have to explain that it's sarcasm, which is what the little smiley guy effectively does. Imagine how much less effective A Modest Proposal would have been if Swift had begun it with, "So I think we should all eat babies."

Well, my take on the whole deal is this: I think that of all the FM albums that feature Lindsey, Mirage was the one that he was most "forced" to participate. I really don't think he wanted anything at all to do with FM at that point and I think he resented the whole "let's get back to the Rumours groove" thing as a slap in the face to his best work on Tusk. And, frankly, it shows in his material- uninspired and derivative. Fortunately, I think Stevie and Christine's material actually did inspire him.

"I hope you a find a love,
Your own designs of love
That's alright"

It's a great song.

It'll never happen. Even if it did, the timbre of Stevie's voice from that time that makes the vocal so respendent is gone. If she tried it today the song would either be in a much lower key, or her vocal would be a strained bleat ala "Silver Springs" from the second leg of the SYW tour- or most likely, both.

Well, it's certainly got Western influences, and of course the Buckingham Nicks demo didn't have percussion, but I don't think Stevie sat down with a book on the conventions of Western music and set out to write a real traditional Western song.
Exactly. It's a pet peeve of mine when Western or Western-tinged/influences music is characterized as "Country".

This is exactly what I was going to quote to support my post, and of course you did it. Nice. :xoxo:
The lyrics to this song are superb.

I put the smiley in so as not to be an a**hole, but I guess that line of reasoning is lost on you .

Okay, there. How's that? Notice: no smiley.

Yes there is, you put it in there again!

(Why is it being an asshole to say something about me being sarcastic when I'm the one who brought it up in the first place? And how does an eye-rolling emoticon make something less asshole-ish?)

It would definitely have to be in a lower key, but I think it could work well that way. Most of the song is actually in a relatively low register anyway. Let Lindsey take high harmonies, and I think you've got a concert highlight.

Favorite simple-and-direct lyrics:

"Now, I can't define love like it should be
That's alright"

That is indeed quite all right.

No, much like David, I'm very rarely trying to be an asshole (with a few exceptions the past couple of days). We just speak directly and unapologetically.

Really? Cuz when David does it, it's funny and playful but when you do it, you come across as smug and arrogant. Hmmm....I wonder what the missing ingredient is ? Ah yes, sarcasm with a dash of condescention! -----I'm sure if I spelled that wrong you'll let me know. I bow to your infinite wisdom, I really do!

Sure, if you'd like: condescension.

You spelled it incorrectly on purpose, didn't you?

I dunno Towie. I think the following statement, also on Wikipedia, is true:

However, country music is actually a catch-all category that embraces several different genres of music: Nashville sound (the pop-like music very popular in the 1960s); bluegrass, a fast mandolin, banjo and fiddle-based music popularized by Bill Monroe and by the Foggy Mountain Boys; Western which encompasses traditional Western ballads and Hollywood Cowboy Music, Western swing, a sophisticated dance music popularized by Bob Wills; Bakersfield sound (popularized by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard); Outlaw country; Cajun; Zydeco; gospel; oldtime (generally pre-1930 folk music); honky tonk; Appalachian; rockabilly; neotraditional country and jug band.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_and_Western

To call it Western is technically correct, but to call it country is not incorrect either.

Imagine how much less effective A Modest Proposal would have been if Swift had begun it with, "So I think we should all eat babies."

hilarious.

to answer the original question ... my favorites are "love in store" and "that's alright" (spelling error notwithstanding). "love in store" is a brilliant opening to the album; i love the harmonies. i think "that's alright" is one of stevie's absolute best songs. so clean and pure. her country (or western, whatever) songs really showcase her ability to write a great song without any witches or what have you and just tell a story. and the voice ... my GOD, the voice. she makes me swoon.

EDIT: i should add that i also LOVE "hold me" but i think the live versions of it blow away the studio version, so i don't know if that counts. i think it's the desperation in the live versions that get me - the "why don't you just hooooold me???" kind of stuff.

Strangely enough, I really like Hold me out of all of them (which is unusual for me, as I'm not a huge Christine fan, but hey... there you go :) )

Hmm...interesting. I would venture to say that most people on the board don't share this sentiment. I like the live versions that I've heard, but mostly for the guitar work.

I think the band felt so, too. That's why it never made the Mirage video, IMO.

That's Alright. This must be listened to on vinyl or a cassette to really get the full impact. There's a great alt mix floating around out there too.

I agree! The alt version is kind of cool. It's more twangy. I always thought That's Alright was very catchy.
