View Full Version : Rumours and Tusk roughs&outtakes
Hi all! There have probably been numemous posts or threads about the "Rumours" and "Tusk" outtakes, (that is the "Rumours" and "Tusk" double cd's with the bonus material) but I just bought them yesterday and I 'm so excited I could not help not starting a new thread about it ( :sorry: )!
I know most of you have had them for ages, but to me it is a really big "achievement" since I could not find them anywhere.
I never expected that to happen, I think the outtakes made me appreciate the songs (or, in the case of Tusk, a whole album) even more (usually listening to outtakes of songs leaves me a bit "disappointed").
I had always prefered Rumours to Tusk but I had to hear the outtakes to realise that Tusk is a masterpiece (don't flame me that it took me so long to figure that out! :o ). I don't know how to explain this..
So, anyway, I would be glad to hear some views, if you 'd like to.

I think the remasters are absolutely fabulous. And I agree with pretty much everything you posted.

They're fantastic and Tusk truly is a masterpiece. Now if they would just afford MIRAGE the same treatment. :)

According to the original announcement of the project, the ENTIRE Fleetwood Mac catalogue (from Then Play On forward) was being remastered. The three that were released was just the first phase. Whether that project is still on the table, I don't know. I would've thought that we'd have had (at the very MINIMUM) the second phase released by now (if not the entire catalogue), so that makes me think the project has been back-burnered. Mirage is definitely one album that is in the most dire need of a remastering...the current version is just atrocious. And with the number of single B-sides alone, Tango In The Night definitely could be expanded.

The fact that it's Reprise doing the overhauling convinced me from the start that we wouldn't see many or any more remasters. If it were a label like Rhino, it'd be different. But Reprise probably looked at the sales of the three reissues they put out, decided they weren't making enough money, and figured, f*** it, why bother.

Actually, it WAS Rhino that made the original announcement...then "Warner Special Products" took over the project and that's where it stands.

Hi everyone! :wavey:
Interestingly, bands that sell alot less albums are able to remaster and re-release their entire back catalogues...so why the Mac would be any different is beyond my understanding. I suspect that the band has to be involved in these remasters in some way....and since Lindsey is usually the one to take on these types of projects, and since he is supposedly working on his own album, perhaps Mirage & Tango are still to come, maybe on the toes or heels of another tour.
When I first got mine...
The Rumours outtakes make me really appreciate the album. Some favorites are the extended Silver Springs, the version of Songbird with the guitar, the Oh Daddy with more backing vocals and harmonies, the version of Gold Dust Woman with the snippet of If You Ever Did Believe at the end, and Planet of the Universe. Of course, the re-mastering on the original recordings is awesome. I remember listening to the remastered GDW for the first time and going "Holy ****!" because of some of the stuff at the end that I had never heard before. Of course, my previous copy of Rumours was burnt and probably a piece of crap.
As for the Tusk reissues, I didn't appreciate the outtakes at first. As a relatively new fan (less than a year) I hadn't actually heard Tusk (the album) until I got the re-master. See, I heard about the pending re-issues and was holding out. So sitting down one day and listening to ALL of Tusk and then listening to ALL of the outtakes...well to a new listener the outtakes didn't sound much different from the original album. However, as time went on and I became familiar/obsessed with Tusk, the outtakes were further appreciated. Of course, I am one of a few who doesn't really appreaciate all of the instrumental, nameless Lindsey demos that all kind of sound the same to me if I'm not really listening (sorry). I absolutely love the 'Cleaning Lady' version of Sara, as well as the heartbreaking version of Storms (I wish they would do it live in that style). There is something very haunting about the outtake of Never Make Me Cry. There first time I really got it, I was walking to school in the rain and it was just...magical. Other favorite outtakes include Brown Eyes, Beautiful Child, Walk a Thin Line, and Kiss and Run (so fun...I wish it was longer).
As a big fan of both Mirage and Tango (but especially Mirage), I wish they would get on with it and remaster both. But I've said that many times.

.
ITA. I actually think the outtake of "Storms" is better than the album version. I don't *know* music and I 'm not sure what it is that makes it different (percussion/drums?:o ), but I love that version.

I'm the same, I can't find FM stuff _anywhere_. The one time I did find the expanded Tusk in a shop I had no money!! :(
So, I don't know Tusk, because I'm holding out for getting the reissue too!
But I just love Rumours expanded. I love hearing the early Silver Springs and Planets of the Universe. Awesome. And the cute stuff, like hearing them laughing in the background, or Mic the Screecher, which is just hilarious.

Speaking of remasters. Back when CD's were hitting the market, it was announced that Rumours was going to be properly remastered but they were going to do it without any repackaging or annoucement. So the longer you waited to buy the Rumours CD, the more likely you would get the "silent" remastered album. I think this info was originally published in Ice Magazine.
But at least this time around, they gave us a bonus CD and a re-working of the Rumours album by adding Silver Springs and switching the sequence.

I think this info was originally published in Ice Magazine.I don't know that it was "remastered," but there were definitely two editions of 'Rumours' out there, with the versions of "Second Hand News" and "Gold Dust Woman" being the only notable differences from one edition to the other.
Edit: I'm thinking that the version of "Never Going Back Again" might have been different, too.

Ok, I finally got the "Rumours" remastered for Christmas. Now I have heard it once or twice before with Paula and I cannot get over the ending on "Silver Springs"! The aahhaahhaaahhaahhh, oohhoohhohhoohhh at the end is so fricken awesome! Why oh why was this not left in the song? I LOVE IT! I have a outter body experience every time I hear it. Just thought I 'd share :D

I really dislike the album as well, but I would still love a remaster and bonus disc - if only for Christine and Stevie's tracks

I went to a record and CD fair the other week and they had Rumours, Tusk and Mirage boots with all the demos on - so it was like an alternate album of stuff that didn't quite make it onto the actual album. They were £12 each and looked like they were pretty well made. I bought the Tusk one simply cos it had the studio version of Fireflies on it.

off topic a little - I just watched the VH1 'the nations favourite albums'.
Rumours came in at number 13.
Various big names talked about it. Notably Stewart Copeland from the Police who described it as a 'guilty pleasure' since it ws supposed to be the antithesis of everything he stood for as a peroxide punk.
Others too said they had resisted liking it because their parents had played it non stop when they were growing up but now all these years later they saw it for its true greatness.
Debbie Harry spoke of how she related to the personal side of it since she too had had a 'passionate relationship with Chris who was in the band.' (Chris Stein, I assume not FM's Chris  )
Stevie was shown briefly talking about how blessed she was to have to have been in a great band.
FM was described by a commentator as one of the greatest rock and roll bands.
Michael Stipe said good things as did others and the final consensus was it's a 'masterpiece.'

Mic The Screecher rulz!!!!:p
Has the original mix (the one on the LP and cassette when Tusk first came out) of I Know I'm Not Wrong ever been released on a CD? Every version I've heard, including the 4 on the expanded remaster are not the (IMO superior) original. I'd really like to hear that mix again sometime.

My dear, if you needed any of that stuff all you needed to do was ask. There are many here who are willing to share that stuff with you free of charge. I hope you at least got some nice artwork with it.

At this point I'm not sure what the original is. I'll check around here and see if I have what you're looking for.

It's the same as the original but the polariod pic is the pic of the band floating around from the inlay and it says Tusk Demo's and Rough's accorss it instead of just "Tusk". The wierd thing I did notice about it is - it's ALL stevie demo's. It's stuff like Fireflies and Sara alternates and SOTM. There is also a jam session on there which turned into the tune of Beauty and the Beast...quite interesting...

it hasnt been released on CD as of yet.
I took my cassette version of Tusk awhile back and burnt it to CD just to have the different mix (or mixes) used for the cassette version (Which still sounds better than the CD to my ears).
As for Tusk outtakes, I have some master reel sourced recordings that werent used for the remastered/expanded edition of Tusk (I will post those disc titles in a bit).
