I have to admit, Mirage does sound better. It would still be voted "crappiest album" by me, though. If you took Stevie's songs out. :p
It isn't the squirrel headed annoyance it was when I heard the CD, though. It is warm, I can hear so much more harmony and bass wise - and that is very important in lending warmth and beauty. I haven't heard one of Chris's songs yet, that will be the real test. The order of my hateage when I first listened to Mirage was: Chris's songs, then Lindsey's, then Stevie's.
Mostly, I'm looking forward to listening to Live, 1980, as I have never heard it before (although I may have heard all the songs, I hope not) And to that end, is the Farmer's Daughter the same one as on the TUSK reissue? I also have one version of fireflies, I'm hoping it's not the same.
But I got on LP:
Tango
Greatest Hits
RAL
Wild Heart
Live
Mirage
and Rumours, which I already had.
So I just need FM, FM, and Sin City live, and Belladonna. :) Oh, and Behind The Mask.
I was just excited, is all. I realize this won't change the course of human history. But finally I might be able to post strange versions of me singing "That's Alright"...
The best part was that the record player was cheap because the CD player on it doesn't work. But the speakers are suprisingly good. Better than on my computer, I would say. I definitely feel the warm fuzzies. :woohoo:
Oh, another question: Is Sin City live in Los Vegas '77 worth getting? It's the same ol' songs I notice. Not that I've ever cared about that before...
*Also, I feel really cool having a record player. We had one when I was young. It was this huge console thing, though. And I mean, bigger than a good size trunk. That shizz was a piece of furniture!
I feel deeper and more authentic.. Of course, at the time it was all about tapes. I remember the only new album my mom ever bought (we already had some, it seems like we only had various Doors albums from what was played, but I think there were more) was Pink Houses, by John Cougy Melly.
I got a nostalgic model, it has an old fashioned radio face on it and all....cherry wood...it's very cute.

Yeah, Only Over You sucks. :( I mean, Chris's voice is great as always, but...
Mirage so has that specific 1982 light rock sound. I was offended in that other thread when they said "best light rock band" but Mirage really is a lot of things I didn't like about soft rock circa 1982.
I appreciate the flashback, though. I just started humming: "Abra, abra cadabra! I wanna reach out and grab ya!" a gross song I like better from '82.

Okay, two seconds into Empire State and I'm totally irritated. What's with the plinky?
Yep, this song sucks.
YAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!
It's an afront to my delicate and refined sensibilities!

Ahhhh, thank god Straight Back is next! Stevie doesn't plinky-squirrel, and her voice isn't so high and pure it causes dogs distress, and I appreciate those things about her! And straight back is a very good song.

Yeah, I think most people like it. Especially Chris fans?
You know those Stevie songs that are really hard for Chris/Linds fans to like?
That is me right now -
I love Chris, I really do, but she's very hard for me to listen to, here. No offense of course, she's immensely talented obviously. And part of it is the production. But I just can't do it. Hold Me, though I like it cause it's fun to sing to, still is too much sacharine for me - diabetic coma on the way.
I name this FM's shallowest album.

Even my old worn Bella Donna sounds really good on vinyl. In fact, the cd I made from digitizing my Bella Donna record sounds better than the cd I bought. How can that be?
Anyway, congrats on your record player - it's cool that you found one with retro look. I never got rid of the last turntable I bought, in the mid-eighties, although it has been through many cartridges and needles. It isn't a cool-looking machine at all, but works fine.
I only recently replaced my vinyl of Tusk with the Cd.
I haven't listened to Mirage in a very long time, and it is even possible that the record isn't in my box of records stored at mom's - I know it isn't with my records here-which means I may have sold it. I think I spent a lot of time skipping to the Stevie songs on Mirage, and this was the first FM record where her songs were really my only standout favorites. Hmm, well, I also liked "Eyes of the World". I worked as a cashier at a clothing store the year this record came out, and they stationed a tv right next to the checkout line, with a loop of about 5 videos, and one was "Hold Me" so for that reason, the song is deeply imprinted in my brain. I know it well, but I am not sure that means I like it lots. It is catchy. Maybe Chris was saving up for her own solo effort. I ended up liking more of her songs on that record.

Yes, eyes of the world is fine. Same on Hold Me, it's so ingrained it's hard to really not like it. it's like the song you don't like, but always sing, and then after you sing it, you feel happier. It's very insidious. (uh, which I guess is a longer way of saying "catchy" like you did  )
See, you feel the same about Mirage as I do. I've delved my unbiased brain as much as possible, and I really do think Stevie's tracks on this are a standout - oddly, in the way that they stand the test of time - whereas I think the others do not stand that test as well, largely (I imagine) due to Mr. Lindsey's very modern production. I appreciate his effort, and it's cool for '82, I guess -
I remember long ago, I said you were my actual secret mom (as opposed to my real mom, who only likes GDW and the Chain, and who told me I was out of tune all the time when I was little  ), and right now I think that more than ever.
I want to get Tusk, too - although the reissue that I won on CD is very great. I love the extras. The main one that I want now is Behind the Mask - and in no small part because I hear Christine's tracks are the outstanding ones on that album. I'm always trying to like Christine more. My serious study of TUSK was a good start, as her songs on TUSK are sublime and outstanding. I actually feel really bad that I don't like her Mirage songs.
And, lastly, I can't fricking WAIT to hear "Kind of Woman" on vinyl! This song is an untouted gem - why doesn't she do it in concert?! Her new voice could easily handle the range. And it is a very, very sexy song. The problem with the Belladonna LP is that everyone on ebay keeps trying to sell it with signature, and COA, and I could give a rats ass about that, I just want to hear it for cheap!!!! hahaha. I want it to be 1.50 plus shipping like Mirage! heh.
Why doesn't Stevie do what we want!!?!?!
Okay, I know I said I wanted to hear the Live album, but I simply must pop in Wild Heart - my computer version sucks ass.
Oh, Yes!!! Stand Back is awesome on Vinyl!!!
Fricking SCORE!

I will be your secret mom. Do I get some paperwork?
My own mom always told me to speak more quietly so I blame her for inability to gauge my volume when speaking and singing.

I love Christine's Tusk songs! I have only listened to the Tusk cd once through, but it sounds good - doesn't make me miss the vinyl. I liked Christine even before Stevie (5th grade) and somehow this makes me feel I have the right not to always like her best. As I have said on other threads, I like her for pretty different reasons.

She never listens...don't blame it on her soul. You know what to blame.
p.s. my band is doing "That's Alright" but I only let them listen to the coffee plant demos.

I, of course, understand exactly what you mean.. it totally is FM's most "safe" and pop-ish album... but that is why I love it! I'm a SUCKER for catchy pop tunes (why I love Chris and why I love writers/singers like Mariah).. so that could explain my love for Mirage.. it has such a 50's-ish/pop/catchy/slick.. vibe to it that simply makes it unique to any other FM record. But then again no two FM records sound the same.. another reason I love this band so!
And might I add Lindsey's songs are just brilliant on Mirage.. forget Tusk being his work of art.. "Can't Go Back" and "Book of Love" are divine in my eyes! Also, one of my favorite Stevie songs comes from Mirage as well.. "That's Alright" (Thought I was going to say "Straight Back" didn't you ;) ).. And "Love In Store" and "Wish You Were Here" (especially the piano at the very end are just sublime!
LONG LIVE MIRAGE! (and its beautiful cover.. IMO the best FM cover ever.. next to Bare Trees!) :) :woohoo:

Mirage has its plusses and minuses for me, but I think it could have really been an incredibly strong album if the band had more fully embraced the late-50s/early-60s pop aesthetic Lindsey seemed to be pushing for. A little less 80s gloss and a little more vintage hook would have gone a long way, and would have given the album a more cohesive aesthetic purpose.

I love my record player too. I prefer to listen to vinyl because of the richer, warmer sound (and the crackles are the BEST!) but it's a pain to have to walk across the room and flip the record over, I know, lazy. But yeah, there are albums I ALWAYS listen to on vinyl: Tusk, Bebe LeStrange, and Dreamboat Annie come to mind first, and Dreamboat Annie only because I never bought the c.d.
I heard much of Stevie's and The Mac's music first on vinyl and continued to do so for the longest time because it just sounds better! When I got the c.d.'s it was a letdown because they sounded so tinny and impersonal. Buying c.d.'s and browsing in record shops is not the same as it used to be. Flipping through c.d. cases instead of big, vinyl record sleeves is not nearly as rich of an experience or tactilely satisfying!
But yeah, about Mirage...I really like Mirage. I used to hate it! The first time I heard it was the last time for a very long time. Not long ago I picked it up again and started to really listen to it and realized that it's a really great album. There are a few clunkers on there, but I realized that some of my favorite F.M. songs are on that album: That's Alright, Hold Me, Gypsy, Eyes of the World, Book of Love, I Wish You Were Here, Love in Store (this one really benefits from Stevie's harmonies though)---there are a lot of good songs on that album, you just have to get past Only Over You, Empire State and Oh Diane .
And I'd have to disagree with Jyqm---I wish Lindsey would have totally stayed away from the 50's retro thing! Songs like Oh Diane are just BAD! When he kind of uses the ambiance of the genre but doesn't try too hard to fall in line with the 50's sound he does much better, like for instance with Book of Love. That song doesn't come out of the mix all sappy and cheesy with manufactured feeling, but instead draws on emotional rawness for much of its pathos. That's my favorite side of Lindsey, he should have done more of that instead of trying to emulate 50's doo-wop. Sorry, I just hate that sound.

You listened to Mirage on vinyl & no mention of Straight Back?!?! I hear it's a totally different version, but I cannot assess which is better since my turntable is STILL not working (ie - I am lazy.) :distress: Help me, Amber.

Actually, we mostly agree. I don't wish the album had gone full-on with that doo-wop kind of sound (a la "Oh Diane"), but that it had employed more of the tropes in a new and interesting way (a la "Book Of Love"). "Book Of Love" is actually the song I was thinking of when I made my post; it really is a great song, and I think it's Lindsey's most successful attempt to integrate that kind of 50s/60s pop sound into his 80s aesthetic. "Can't Go Back" is a close second. "Oh Diane," I agree, is the weakest of the bunch, though I do have a soft spot for it.

with respect to the Sin City bootleg, it is a must have if you love Rhiannon and GDW as much as I do. Sin City, along with Baton Rouge, is probably one of the best performances of GDW ever.
if you're interested in hearing a sample or two, PM me.
