Of the 8 people who I stayed in contact with from Grad school, I am the only one with an MBA that didn't get laid off. And I don't use the degree in my job.

I have my BA in Journalism. I will go back to graduate school, I just don't know where or for what at this point. But once I hit the five year experience mark in my field I will be eligible for some amazing fellowships!
Also one day I plan to invent something that will magically erase all of Mariah Carey's catolgue from the planet. There will be no recollection that she ever existed and it will win me the Nobel Prize.

I have a bachelors in psychology. Yes, its true that those of us who go into psych are nuts. :p I don't use my degree formally although it didn't hurt to learn all that stuff about human behavior and such.
Oh yeah, Maria if you want to do well on papers make them longer than the minimum requirement. Mine always wound up about 20 pages which is kind of insane but they were all As. Of course they were also mostly all-nighters which I do NOT recommend.
I once lost a paper on my computer that I'd worked on all night. That sucked. But the professor gave me an incomplete and I submitted the paper the following semester, that was cool of him.

Thanks. There will be no all-nighters if I have anything to do with it. I always wanted to be a Psychologist, but I was not interested in going to college when I graduated HS, and I was not pushed by my folks to do it. Since I work for a pharmaceutical company, I plan on getting an associates in biotechnology. That would qualify me as a lab tech. Which, if your good at what you do in my company, the only way to go is up. I would really like to get my bachelors in chemistry. Then I would be a chemist there. Some high school/high school grad.
I just said the grad part because I know I'm going to graduate.
I went ahead and chose "Doctoral" though that won't be completely true until June 3 when I officially get my MD. Tomorrow is my VERY LAST DAY of medical school EVER!:blob1:
Ah, then a 2 month break and the dreaded residency (anesthesiology) begins...4 more years. I swear I don't think this is ever going to end, but I keep trying to think about the future. What BLOWS MY MIND, is that I've been out of high school for 8 years now...I still look (and oftentimes act) like I'm 18! I'm getting more and more nervous by the day but also equally excited. We'll see...

Could/should go back to school, But I become bored very easily nowadays...So for now I will pass until I can stay more focused (Though if I do get the urge to hit the books again, It will be after the legal issues with my Mother's death are settled.)

I thought with Psych you could only get a BS? How does that work? I've heard of a BA in Psych before, I jjust never knew how it worked.
...
I also have a BA in Psych. At my school they literally had 2 checkboxes for Psych, Do you want a BA or a BS? Please check one. I just thought a BS in Psych lent itself to ridicule. Plus I fancy myself more artsy than sciency, although I love science, so I picked the BA.
I was originally a biology major but I found I really hated lab with a passion. That didn't seem to be the right path. That formaldehyde smell, ugh, I hated walking into that building altogether. I figured that meant I shouldn't go into the field. Plus I loved my psych class. I went with my passion.
However, Janet is right, you need an advanced degree to use psych which I didn't get. After doing an internship at a rehab I found I just didn't have the ego strength and maturity to do clinical work, it would take too much out of me. I did work with mentally retarded adults for a year and I loved it. But I made 17k a year and when I got my raise it was $2.50 a week. Hard to believe but true! That was an insult and a slap in the face.
Sometimes I think about going back to psych now that I am more mature and can handle it. As soon as I get my debt down a bit I will go back to school for something.

^ So true about Psych. You MUST get a Masters to really make any money or do anything as far as therapy & treatments go. When I worked with the mentally ill teens, the direct care staff (ie - the ones who got the crap kicked out of them daily, the ones with most stress, the ones carrying out the programs set by the therapists) were only making about $9 an hour.
Almost all of them were going back for their MS or PhD.

So you didn't have to take Statistics? What about Research Methods? I'm asking because those classes were SO hard for me. And if I didn't have to take them in order to have a degree, I will kill someone.
As far as the GRE goes, I took it right before I graduated, and I didn't study. It showed, because I scored a 330 in math! I scored a 724 in Verbal (which is good, but still...), and I don't remember how I did in writing. But anyway, the GRE is just one little piece of what you need to get into graduate school. If you're stroong everywhere else, don't worry about it. My point is, don't let the GRE stand in your way of thinking about grad school.
All that being said, if you're making good money and happy where you are, screw it!

They did that to me too. Just tell them you're going to psychoanalyze them when you get your degree if they don't shut up!
If it's what you love then do it. If it's something you're passionate about then don't listen to anyone except your own heart and gut. Just having the degree helps with any career you choose.

Yeah, and it really depends on the program you get into. My program was in foreign languages so the quantitative section of the GRE was basically moot to my area of study, and the verbal section wasn't really any kind of barometer either, even though I did MUCH better on that than quantitative. My advisor was like, "just take the GRE and don't worry about the score" so that was cool, but some departments really put a lot of stock into GRE scores .
But Jannie, 724 verbal is outstanding! Way to go!

Suze answered it well when she said if it's something you love, you need to go for it. The best advice *I* have is that you must go into it knowing you will have to have an advanced degree. I knew going in that I would at least have to have a masters, if not a PhD (which is what my professors were pushing me to go for). It's not as easy a degree as some would believe (see previous post on Statistics and Research Methods), but I loved every minute of it. The reason I am getting my masters in Social Work is because as a Clinical Social Worker I can do exactly what I want to do. I thought I HAD to be a psychologist in order to provide counseling, work with the mentally ill, etc., but I don't.
Good luck- I say, go for it!
