View Full Version : Stevie Live @ Red Rocks
I bought this DVD on-line at Best Buy. I thought it was a bargain at $6.99. Never seen it & I'm watching it tonight. I think that I've seen it talked about on here. I'm really eager to watch it :blob1: & I'll let you all know what I think about it tomorrow.

hi guys...i've had the dvd for a few years and only watched it 2 xs. i think the thing that bothers me about it is the fact she is so coked up. especially when she comes out for the edge at the end. her eyes are glazed over she's so out of it. not my fav either but i had to have it as an addition to my all stevie things. i'm glad that part of her life is over. not only for her but for us as fans as well....pat (long time fan)

The coked out live parts don't bug me at all- I, like most eveyone else, hate the fake close-ups. So cheesy. But, it really is a must have for any Stevie fan.

It's the closeups & cheesy camera work that bug me, too, about that video. They ruined it. It could have been great, had it been a genuine record of her show. But all it is now is a cream cheese production. The Weedsport radio broadcast that year had more honest-to-god Rock a Little spirit than this cream cheese production did.

I actually love this version of Edge- the crazy , wacked out, passionate vibe of it.
actually. Yeah, she seemed a little glassy-eyed at times, well most times, but I thought she rocked. Didn't like the 80s big hair thing. Hubby thought she was hot. She seemed a little stiff the first couple of songs, but seemed to moved around after that. It was great seeing Frampton & Mick. Waddy hasn't changed a bit. The red, leather pants were cool! Who was the woman guitar player? I recognized Sharon & Lori, but I don't know who the other woman was. Man, and Sharon was a real stick back then. She hasn't changed much. I couldn't tell where the dove came from, someone in the audience gave it to her? Was the dove doing drugs, too? He looked scared; he wouldn't go anywhere. I like the way she sings B&TB now though, more feeling to it. And they kept showing Mick; he's the beast, isn't he? I loved Edge. I thought the crowd was going to swallow her up. The scenery was really nice. I wish this concert could have been longer. All in all, I think my $6.99 was money worth spent!

This is not my favorite live video either. I'm glad I have it, but the production is pretty shoddy. Again, I wish it was the whole set. I know during the concert, there crane shot camera failed, so I wonder if that's why they re-shot the close up's.
I hate that cheezy dance number during Stand Back. I cringe everytime.
I love Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You and the Edge of Seventeen fan walk. Adorable.
I still don't why they released this concert and not the HBO White-Winged Dove show. A much better shot and performed live show.

Have you all noticed the part where a still photo of Stevie is inserted over her body? It is in "Stand Back" in a shot where Waddy is in the foreground. He and his guitar are framing the shot with Stevie in the background. Stevie is moving and singing like normal, and then all of the sudden, they cover her up with a still photo. It is weird because I can't see why they did it.

La Nicks began the weight gain at that time. I think that is why alot of that video is altered.

Here's the funny thing though. I have it as well, and I agree with the assesments about the close ups, but when they announced the dates for the Gold Dust Tour last year, I'm pretty sure the Red Rocks show was one most people wanted to go to. Maybe I'm wrong, but I dont think so. Why, if the video is so bad for the most part was this show so anticipated then?

photos from les dudek appearance show stevie still looking hot with her wild heart body, & at the september thing she had really beefed up & people in the crowd even said on my recording: "Didn't she put a little weight on?"
that show was the first beefy stevie I saw.

I wonder if she was just bloated from the drugs and booze (OH THE STORIES I HAVE HEARD  ) - or if she was on some sort of cortizone to deswell her chords. I mean she looked not just like she had gained a little weight, etc.

I rented the Red Rocks concert thru Netflix not too long ago. It is so horribly painful to watch. Just sheer embarrassing. However, my favorite part is when Waddy is doing the intro guitar work for "Edge of Seventeen"...Stevie is just coming off a break...she's offstage...Waddy's back is to the audience, and he's facing the drummer...and he plays the intro again and again and again and again...for what seems like waaaay too long...(at this point I start imagining Stevie, poofing up her hair, running into a new wardrobe and snorting a few lines)...and just when you feel the time is right for her to come on...it keeps going and going...and Waddy just rolls his eyes and shakes his head at the drummer as if to say "That fricking little diva better get her ass out her before I blow out a string..."
Hilarious. Of course most of this is all in my head, but Waddy's eye roll and head shake...totally happened. You'll notice it if you look close enough.

ditziness and bombardiness on the Red Rocks video, IMO, are only rivaled by her performance at the US Festival in 1983.
Of course the cheesypuff closeups suck the big wonder-wand-of-life!

Way back in 1984, My Mother decided on a vacation back to her ol' stomping grounds of Denver (Birthplace of 3 of my older siblings). We visited all of her ol' haunts, including Wed Rocks in Morrison.
The really cool thing is that we drove to Morrison mainly to visit the Red Rocks park, So I decided to walk down the steps of Red Rocks Amphitheater (Which was weirdly open that day, So noone said I couldnt head down the stairs to the stage) and my Mother took a picture of me on that very stage. Wished I knew where that picture was...It's a classic!
One of these days, I will make it back to Denver.

I like Red Rocks. Sure, I don't like seeing her so out of it, but I still love it. Bearing in mind I haven't seen the US Festival [DVD on the way, go eBay!] or the HBO Special, but I still like it.
The dove thing was really cute. And the whole holding-up-shawl-behind-Waddy-and-Waddy-going-Wow!!! thing was pretty cool too. Beauty and the Beast made me cry. I continually rock out to Edge of Seventeen [13 minutes, woow!]
The closeups .... yeah, I could definitely do without them. Same goes for the Tango DVD. But hey, that's what we got.
And the Stand Back dance .... I LOVE IT!! Hooray!! :woohoo: Sure, the first time I saw it, it was "What on God's earth is that about?!" But then I saw the video and it all made sense. I love it, cheesy or not. No, wait, maybe because it's cheesy...

Stevie's Red Rocks video was a pale, enervated imitation. Whoever produced the U2 video should have done Stevie's.

I wonder if this was due to depression from breaking up with Joe Walsh. I don't know exactly when they broke up, but it was sometime during the making of Rock a Little. We could know an accurate date if anybody knows when Joe went to Australia around this time. Because Stevie says they broke up right before he went to Australia.

I don't know. At the time this vid was shot, U2 was a WHOOOLE different band with a WHOOOLE different thing going on than Stevie. U2 was all earnest and serious, trying to make the statement that they were a politically motivated band with a conscience, etc. so the rawness of their vid made sense. I don't know if that rawness really would have worked for Stevie, but maybe it would have, I don't know. I just remember the U2 video being very dramatic but in more of an austere kind of way
I still don't why they released this concert and not the HBO White-Winged Dove show. A much better shot and performed live show.

What I hate about Red Rocks:
*the cheesy fake close ups
*The fact that you can't really see her when it *is* real
*Someone told me her voice is dubbed, and I hate that because I didn't know it and I think she sounds awesome.
What I love about Red Rocks:
*The REAL moments (sitting on the floor during Edge, her doing her little Prince thing- "when doves cry" and kicking her leg out, that crazy little dance she does- it's almost like a strut, the Edge walk, Beauty and The Beast, that hand slapping thing she does with the back up singers, the sexy look she gives Waddy when she comes out for Edge), the whole stupid dove thing.)

About the dubbing -- the very start of Edge of Seventeen sounds totally different to the rest of the DVD, I think that part's dubbed. Also [though this could be just bad lipsynching] if you watch carefully at the start of one of the choruses of Stand Back [don't remember which one], you can see that she's not actually singing but you can hear her voice ... I don't know if it is just bad lipsynching though because Jennifer Condos's bass-swaying is bang on time.

I LOVE THE RED ROCKS SHOW!!!!
Ive probably played it 400 plus times since the 90s! Love her big tacky hair, stand back dance rocks. Who cares if the show is overdubbed to death and botched up, its still fun to watch! If I want the real deal, I can watch the 81 show, which I've played a lot less.

I love the 'Red Rocks' video... this and the entire 'Rock A Little' era was my jumping-on point for my Stevie fandom.
One of the things I like most about the 'Red Rocks' vid, is that it reminds me of a full-length version of one of those overblown "live" videos you used to see on MTV, from the likes of Bon Jovi, etc.
Sure, it seems cheesy now, but when I was 15, it was endlessly cool to me... and I guess I still tend to watch it through that 15 year old's eyes.
It's a perfect little mid-80s curio.

ie, super cheesy close ups, fades, dramatic moments, like that? :p I don't remember Red Rocks well, but those same effects were soooo in evidence in the Tango video, and they had me rolling.
I judge things through their time period, as well, and factor that in.
Like I'll never not be deeply in love with Stand Back.
Come to think of it, I swear I remember renting red rocks, thought I'd seen it, but can't remember anything but hair.
Hmmm, maybe I just looked at it in the video store. How remiss. Or maybe I didn't like it? I like the album.
Anyway, the only thing I'm not tolerant of with the diff time periods is hair. Specifically that spiky lion's mane of the mid/late 80's, and also the Sara Donut Head With Curly Bangs.

Stand Back. Is there a better fantasy dance musical situation that your mind makes up than with that song? NO.
