are you SERIOUS? you did?
and you did THAT?
you know, you're a better man than I am Gunga Din....even tho Jesus said to "turn the other cheek" and that "a soft answer turneth away wrath", I dont know many people that can actually do it. So, my hat's off to ya! Good for you!
btw: the "Gunga Din" reference is from a poem (Gunga Din) by
Rudyard Kipling
YOU may talk o' gin an' beer
When you're quartered safe out 'ere,
An' you're sent to penny-fights an' Aldershot it;
But if it comes to slaughter
You will do your work on water, 5
An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it.
Now in Injia's sunny clime,
Where I used to spend my time
A-servin' of 'Er Majesty the Queen,
Of all them black-faced crew 10
The finest man I knew
Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
You limping lump o' brick-dust, Gunga Din!
Hi! slippy hitherao! 15
Water, get it! Panee lao!
You squidgy-nosed old idol, Gunga Din!"
The uniform 'e wore
Was nothin' much before,
An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'ind, 20
For a twisty piece o' rag
An' a goatskin water-bag
Was all the field-equipment 'e could find.
When the sweatin' troop-train lay
In a sidin' through the day, 25
Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawl,
We shouted "Harry By!"
Till our throats were bricky-dry,
Then we wopped 'im 'cause 'e couldn't serve us all.
It was "Din! Din! Din! 30
You 'eathen, where the mischief 'ave you been?
You put some juldee in it,
Or I'll marrow you this minute,
If you don't fill up my helmet, Gunga Din!"
'E would dot an' carry one 35
Till the longest day was done,
An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fear.
If we charged or broke or cut,
You could bet your bloomin' nut,
'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rear. 40
With 'is mussick on 'is back,
'E would skip with our attack,
An' watch us till the bugles made "Retire."
An' for all 'is dirty 'ide,
'E was white, clear white, inside 45
When 'e went to tend the wounded under fire!
It was "Din! Din! Din!"
With the bullets kickin' dust-spots on the green.
When the cartridges ran out,
You could 'ear the front-files shout: 50
"Hi! ammunition-mules an' Gunga Din!"
I sha'n't forgit the night
When I dropped be'ind the fight
With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been.
I was chokin' mad with thirst, 55
An' the man that spied me first
Was our good old grinnin', gruntin' Gunga Din.
'E lifted up my 'ead,
An' 'e plugged me where I bled,
An' 'e guv me 'arf-a-pint o' water—green; 60
It was crawlin' an' it stunk,
But of all the drinks I've drunk,
I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleen; 65
'E's chawin' up the ground an' 'e's kickin' all around:
For Gawd's sake, git the water, Gunga Din!"
'E carried me away
To where a dooli lay,
An' a bullet come an' drilled the beggar clean. 70
'E put me safe inside,
An' just before 'e died:
"I 'ope you liked your drink," sez Gunga Din.
So I'll meet 'im later on
In the place where 'e is gone— 75
Where it's always double drill and no canteen;
'E'll be squattin' on the coals
Givin' drink to pore damned souls,
An' I'll get a swig in Hell from Gunga Din!
Din! Din! Din! 80
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Tho' I've belted you an' flayed you,
By the livin' Gawd that made you,
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

I guess the part I don't get is why we can't just respect each other's differences and leave well enough alone.
In fact, it's in our guidelines here....
In general, the main "rule" for posting on The Ledge is the Golden rule--"do unto others..." An attitude of respect toward each other and the members of Fleetwood Mac should be maintained always. and You are encouraged to be tolerant of differences in the ways that people express themselves.

It was all being said in jest, and quite obviously so.
Actually it was done more so just to amuse ourselves than to ruffle feathers, especially this second time, since the subject of the thread was the Time album, something not likely to attract too many chiffonheads anyway. It was also mostly going on in the wee hours of the morning when hardly anyone was online anyway.
I've never understood why people take remarks that are made about celebrities - whom they do not personally know and likely never will and whom will likely never read the comments anyway (or care about them if they did) - as if they were attacks on themselves.

It was all being said in jest, and quite obviously so. :shrug:But you also said that you were "having a little fun" with the Stevie fans, and that "unfortunately" only one took the bait.
I've never understood why people take remarks that are made about celebrities - whom they do not personally know and likely never will and whom will likely never read the comments anyway (or care about them if they did) - as if they were attacks on themselves.I guess it's the same reason many people get annoyed if someone is relentlessly bashing a politician that they support... or, you know, if they bash the 'Time' album. ;)
We all like what we like, and when someone is disparaging what we like, many folks get defensive to one degree or another.
I also think that, of all areas where one could poke fun at a celebrity, making comments about their weight is ALWAYS going to be something that engenders hurt feelings. A great many of us are not our ideal weight, and are probably self-conscious about it to some degree, so to see a celebrity whom we like and/or identify with, being ridiculed for their weight, it gets the ol' defenses up.
Again, it's just a respect thing.

And not to press the matter, because I really do like you and don't want to give the impression otherwise... but I think your "short and stout" sig pic could possibly be viewed as a dig at her weight. Given that "stout" is a synonym for "fat."

But it's not just any picture of Stevie. It's a picture of her doing those stupid "Say You Will" hand gestures which I have dubbed (and referred to in more than one post) the "Teapot dance" because it reminds me of the moves that go along with the children's song "I'm a Little Teapot."

When ya'll were talking about getting defensive about our favorite singers/actors/whatever....I tend to think that people who were picked on/bullied/made fun of in school as kids tend to stick up for their faves in a more defensive manner. I was one of those kids that got made fun of for liking certain singers and groups. It gets frustrating when, as adults, it just continues with an even more hateful tone. As a Justin fan, it's very difficult since he's mercilessly been bashed not only on the web but in my life too. :( I always want to say "But, adults will be nice about it." and I just get hurt and disappointed all over again.
Anyways, just wanted to say that.

I tend to think that people who were picked on/bullied/made fun of in school as kids tend to stick up for their faves in a more defensive manner.
Not to belittle your post or anything, but I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't picked on/bullied/made fun of for one reason or another when they were children.
I sure as hell was. You name it, I was teased/tormented for it from elementary school all the way through high school and into college.

But you also said that you were "having a little fun" with the Stevie fans, and that "unfortunately" only one took the bait.
I guess it's the same reason many people get annoyed if someone is relentlessly bashing a politician that they support... or, you know, if they bash the 'Time' album.
I don't really think you could take what was said as offensive. It was a convo between Vicki, Dissention & myself that happened to form on the 'Time Album' thread - There were some snarky remarks made - and I have to admit, I made a few myself  Nothing awful though...

For example, HomerMcVie could get away with poking a little fun at Christine, and I highly doubt a soul would take offense. But if, say, Tommer did it, I'm sure it would be taken very differently.
I make little jokes about Stevie from time to time, and I haven't once had anyone complain to me... but I did ruffle feathers when I referred to Christine as "Fleetwood Mac's Sacred Cow," and I wasn't even meaning it in a derogatory way!

People are just too damned sensitive over trivial things.
Earlier in the same thread where Josh and I were having our fun, Foxyluva called my precious Time "a skid mark on the undies that is Fleetwood Mac." Rather than getting offended, I just chalked it up to bad taste, uttered a few curse words under my breath (but did not type a reply), and moved on.

The main problem I have with 'Time" is the replacement of Stevie - Bekka was a poor, poor choice. Stevie is really irreplaceable  And I would have had the same problem with time if it was Christine who was replaced by Bekka, and Stevie stayed in the band.
Those two ladies cannot be replaced :sorry:

Bekka may sound nothing like Stevie, but I don't think it's fair to call her a "poor choice." She has an amazing singing voice and was already a member of Mick's Zoo (and BTW, I don't think Time sounds anything like The Zoo). I believe she was also romantically involved with Billy at the time (and they've been friends since they were very young), so I think all of that made her an obvious and great choice for the band.

As far as making fun of Stevie's weight...I think it's in really poor taste. It aways makes me think of that interview where she said she would never go back onstage at that weight- that always makes me so sad! Because she's so much more than how much she weighs, to me. And if someone admittedly doesn't even really care for Stevie, I don't see the point of coming into a Stevie *FAN* forum and making derogatory statements about her.
That being said, I really couldn't give a **** about who wants to make fun of her. I don't get it, but I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over it.
Bekka may sound nothing like Stevie, but I don't think it's fair to call her a "poor choice."
I don't think it's fair to call her a Stevie "replacement"! Beyond the fact that she's another pretty blonde, what's the similarity?
In fact, almost none of the non-original members of Fleetwood Mac are "replacements," with the possible exceptions of Billy and Rick, who were arguably brought on board for the Tango tour simply to fill the Lindsey gap (though obviously they got to expand their roles later on). Other than that, though many band members have left and others have joined, it's never been a matter of simple replacement. It was always more of a mutation, a changing of the band into a largely different entity. Bekka didn't "replace" Stevie anymore than Bob Welch and Christine "replaced" Peter and Jeremy.

And THAT'S the problem when you're a sex symbol. Eventually, age catches up with you. Then you're endlessly compared to that former sex symbol. And even Stevie finally realized that. Going on stage at 300 lbs was no longer an option.

I don't think it's fair to call her a Stevie "replacement"! Beyond the fact that she's another pretty blonde, what's the similarity?Aesthetically, the two have practically nothing in common: not looks, not performing style, not vocal style, not songwriting style, not personality, not musical heritage.
In fact, almost none of the non-original members of Fleetwood Mac are "replacements," with the possible exceptions of Billy and Rick, who were arguably brought on board for the Tango tour simply to fill the Lindsey gap (though obviously they got to expand their roles later on).I'd even argue with that, hoping not to split hairs. Billy was hired as far as I know just because he was everybody's friend & fellow musician & it just seemed like a good idea to ask your friend to join, especially given that your friend could sing & write songs & play guitar. I know MacDouginator actually believes that Billy was hired specifically to look like Lindsey, but that's beyond belief to me.
as for Rick: not to replace Lindsey per se but to fill the lead guitarist role, which was empty at the time. Every band needs a lead guitarist, & Billy wasn't one. So either Rick needed to be hired or another lead guitarist needed to be hired--somebody had to be brought in to play lead guitar. I think if the desire to replace Lindsey specifically were really operating at the time, they'd have found someone who had that sort of idiosyncratic, really off-the-wall edge (& preoccupation with sonic envelope-pushing) as well as someone who had a strong bent for production & engineering, neither of which describes Rick ... or Billy.

I tell you what. When Tango first fired up on the stage, I coulda swore that Lindsey was back!!!! Yeah, I didn't have very good seats for Tango, but from my ****ty seats, it sure LOOKED, and even sounded like Lindsey. It took me a few songs to make sure that it wasn't.
Even if it wasn't a major factor in Billy's hiring, it sure didn't HURT anything that he bore a strong resemblance.

As for me, I adore her anyway. Just sing, I say, just sing it to me. I've gone to every tour (since I was old enough), so it doesn't bother me in the least what size she is. I found her über sexy on TOSOTM tour and Behind The Mask (first leg). But you know, it's different. She's not as young and spirited anymore, so I don't expect her to jump off the stage (US Festival) or shake it on Golden and Braid or exorcise demons (Mirage Tour) much anymore. She's got that slow, graceful flow now.

I don't think anyone is bashing Stevie.I don't bash, either. I criticize. Bashing is an expression of anger & violence. Criticism is the reasoned & reasonable elucidation of perspective. I must talk about every aspect of the performance in front of me: what it sounds like, what it looks like, how it achieves or doesn't achieve its ends, &c. What happens on stage or screen is, to me, a complete aesthetic experience, & that experience includes everything related to the performer, including his or her looks, demeanor & style.
I sometimes try to make my point about the completeness of the aesthetic experience clear by being forceful & not mincing words, but my point is misunderstood & rejected as often as it is understood & accepted -- or understood & rejected.
But there is simply no possible way I would ever discuss a Fleetwood Mac concert without discussing -- or at least forming an opinion about -- the looks of the performers that night.

I think it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that there was going to be two guitarists up on that stage for that tour, one way or another.

The problem here is that Stevie is percieved as having to be slim.
She used to be very petite and I don't think people can see her any other way. Certainly when she is part of a group where all the others are very slim (ok, so John's put a few lbs on but still) it's seen as an issue. 3 slim guys and a chubby singer you know? In an industry of anorexic chicks it's not seen as good. I think also the fact it's pop/soft rock she sings doesn't help. Hell if Stevie did Motown nobody would bat an eyelid. Look at Aretha, she used to be slim too, now she's the size of a bus with a chest like a mountain range. :] I don't see anybody complaining about her.

Not to split hairs (although it's a worthwhile distinction to make), but Aretha was an Atlantic gal all the way.
Personally, I'd never "complain" about either of their weight classes, but I do hope that Aretha is being careful about her health given her current size. Although black women in general seem to handle that kind of weight better than most other women. Still, at her age, it's never good to be that heavy.
