The Beatles' entire back catalog will soon be available for download - but only when each track has been digitally remastered to perfection. Up until now, the Fab Four are one of the few acts to have resisted making their work available at the iTunes Music Store. They were similarly the last stars to release their catalog onto compact disc.

But the boss of their record label Apple Corps, Neil Aspinall, revealed the development in London's High Court, where the company is currently battling Apple Computer over its logo.

He said, "We're remastering the whole Beatles catalog, just to make it sound brighter and better and getting proper booklets to go with each of the packages. I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters. It would be better to wait and try to do them both simultaneously so that you then get the publicity of the new masters and the downloading, rather than just doing it ad hoc."

I have 845 Beatle cd's (Official releases and bootlegs)...I'm sure a few more in the future won't hurt much

I say the Beatles Apple should since the PC Apple agreed to the original deal in the first place, before breaking that agreement. I'm sure it will get settled out of court "very soon" (Hint*Hint).

about the logo's: arent they actually different? the Beatles apple is an actual green apple and the Apple Computer apple is a stylized apple with a bite taken out of it. They are actually not the same so Im not sure how it would even stand in court?

it's more about the name "Apple". The original deal was that the Beatles would have exclusive use of the name "Apple" in regards to the appliance towards music, The PC Apple could use it for anything other than music.

Once the popularity of iTunes hit the PC Apple had broken the original agreement with regards to the use of the word "Apple" and logo likeness used in music.

I have a bunch of the Beatles stuff, but I have heard it so much throughout the years that I have trouble listening to it. (Same with some Elton John stuff). This also happened to a few Mac songs. I am just "listened out" on a few things and just can't listen to them anymore. Weird.

That's not in your mind, that's practically in the history books!

Does this mean I'm going to have to go about buying the Beatles' catalogue all over again? I probably won't; none of the current CDs sound that terrible, and I haven't bothered with Dylan's remasters, either.

My complaint: While CD remasters are usually something to celebrate, it seems a bit stupid to be remastering the catalogue in anticipation of offering it up on iTunes, where it will be available in the form of 128 kbps mp3s, the mediocrity of which will surely cancel out any positive results of remastering. If you're a pop/rock music fan who cares even the slightest bit about audio quality, you know the iTunes store is your stop for one-offs only. It simply doesn't make any sense to buy albums or songs you really care about on there.
