It seems that all of a sudden I have just started loving this song! Stevie's vocals are fantasic and the background singers only add to the beauty of the song! And the instrumentation...superb! Unconditional Love has my unconditional attention. :D

Me too!!! One of the better songs off SA. It was supposed to be the first single was it not?

EDIT: My fav part is during the Chorus where Stevie sings "Un-con-di-tion-al"

yep. it's a good one. her vocals are really good, I agree. sexy and soft. kind of Stevie's whole dichotomy (did I spell that right?)

my favorite part:

hey, hey, hey...my precious one

I appreciate this little ditty. It adds a little Hansel & Gretel to Street Angel, a little Maeterlinckian surrealism to Stevie's natural supernaturalism.

I love this song also but unfortunately I would have to say that the "hey hey hey.. my precious one" actually ruins that song for me--sorry

I did'nt know it was supposed to be the first single off SA. maybe Love is a great song but I think as a lead off single no. Same for Peackeeper. Had FM chosen say Thrown Down or Miranda as the first single I feel they album would have gotten the attention it deserved.

When Street Angel was slated to be released in the fall of 1993, the lead single was to be "Unconditional Love", as advertised by the record label in all their press releases at the time.
Then of course most know the story of what came after.....Stevie shelved the project to go to rehab, came out and thought the record sounded too "dirge" and wasn't happy with the record (no doubt tainted because of her acrimonious relationship w/Glyn Johns-the original producer & her klonopin fog)
So she headed back to the studio to tweak the knobs w/ Tom Panuzio and W. Wachtel to add a chunkier more meaty sound to the mix...She changed the running order, omitted and added songs (Docklands & Greta were 2 songs for example, that were not included in the 1993 version as advertised by the press release to record distributors that fall.) and released Street Angel June 1994 with little fanfare....It was the quietest Stevie Nicks release ever!
I still have the press release from 93' I should dig it out and post the original running order of songs. I dont think "Maybe Love" was going to be included in the Glyn Johns original release.

That would be great Chris, thanks! :]

The UL master version is so much better than what eneded up on the album and the only one I will listen to now. I have to say though, while I adore the music on the verses to this song I'm not crazy about the chorus "Unconditional love, I'll be there when you fall..." or the bridge "hey hey hey...". Check this version out, the verses are stellar and this version kicks ass off the album version. Wish they had left it like this, it's one of my favs.

Er...Maybe Unconditional Love Will Change Your Mind couldn't have gotten worse....:sorry:
this is a bit better, I guess....it seems even draggier, though. Am I imagining that? Ewww! Wait! that "heyheyheymyprecioiusone" is awful!
Okay. I guess I can't appreciate this song either way. :(

Okay. I guess I can't appreciate this song either way. :(Amber, imagine you are singing the song to your little 7-year-old niece who has just lost a tooth & then some schoolmates punched her lights out on the playground at recess. So she comes to you--her beloved Aunt Amber--for a pep talk. But on the way to your house, she trips over a loose brick in your driveway, & lets loose with a string of expletives that would make Danny Aiello's character in "Casino" proud.

So you walk outside & calmly pick her up & shush her gently, take her inside, give her some milk & cookies & gently push the hair back from her young face, & you begin to sing to her ... softly, gently, the song "Unconditional Love."

If you imagine it that way, you will like it!

I don't, and can't, have a neice. :p

Yes, as a soothing lullaby MULWCYM could be very nice...

Hey, David - a block of ice from outer space just landed a block from my house! Weird, yeah? The scientist meteor guy said that happens a few times a year (ice falls), but doesn't know the natural process responsible for it. It's about a meter, and made a 3 foot hole in the grass and broke a ceramic irrigation pipe at the bottom of the hole. Some people were trying to say it was from a plane, but it was decided not.
threadjack over.

EARTH.????!!!!

It has to be from the troposphere. How can it be from outer space--you mean like the mesosphere or the ionosphere? Earth's atmosphere would have burned it up. That is some freaky ****. Take cover!!!

I ADORE THIS SONG. Both versions. My favorite is "why would I be a fool and break these ties, when all the dreams that I believe are in your eyes......" Beautiful, I could cry, I think we all know someone that that line belongs to. I ALWAYS put this song on my "compalations for people who hate stevie because they think stevie only writes about witches and evil things compalations " helps to Melt the cold hearts . helps those people to "see the light" Seriously, try it on someone, works like a charm

I know this is a "appreciation" thread and it is a sweet song if I'm not really paying attention to it. Cause the chorus blows with this lyric:
"The one condition of love...
Is there are none at all"

Ooohkay. Super lame choice of wording there. I understand what she was going for, but it's just sounds really dumb.

My favorite is "why would I be a fool and break these ties, when all the dreams that I believe are in your eyes......"

That's absolutely my favorite part of the song, especially on the demo version I posted. Her voice is so soothing and it goes along so well with the guitar strumming (of course they added more music in the album version so it doesn't sound as good).

BTW have I mentioned how adorable you are? (in addition to others who have noticed the same) And it's damn hard to notice someone else when they are standing next to Stevie but you are quite the looker. If I were straight and you lived in LA I'd be all over you like static cling.

I think that line is breathetakingly beautiful. I have also been lucky enough to feel that way about someone. So, it hits home for me.

I'm glad that line touches you, I love hearing that from fans. I think we all have lines from Stevie songs that strike a chord so it always interesting to hear what they are from other fans.

That being said I think this song is an ideal example of Stevie using other writers' material on her albums when it works. Some people have difficulty with the fact that she uses other people's songs when she has such a wealth of her own original music but to me this song is very Stevie and captures her essence. I can see why she picked it. While they may not be her words they are definitely things that she has experienced and wants to pass on to us. Even though she didn't write the words persay I feel confident she put them out their knowing her fans could identify.

Though they're a few songs on SA that I could do without, I always have liked this little one. Nothing in particular really stands out for me, but I've always found it to be very catchy. I like the "I'll be there...I'll be there" part at the end.

Unconditional Love is a great song and one of my favourites. Sometimes, I do wish that the vocal("hey hey hey hey hey, my precious one") from the male vocalist in one of the earlier versions had been used for the released track. Does anyone know who recorded that?

For me "Unconditional Love" is a perfect summer single that sadly never materialized. The chours is so catchy and easy to sing along. I don't care about the fact that this song wasn't written by Stevie herself she gave what she had vocally and made this song truly memorable experience. I won't rate it as the biggest highlight of the album but definately deserves some recognition.
