Sorry for the self-congratulatory thread but many of you encouraged me to ask for a raise and I finally did and got it! All I needed to do was open my mouth. Although I never thought I would just get it without having to fight but that is what happened. My boss got promoted and no longer heads up my department. So before she left I asked for a meeting and asked her how to go about asking for a raise. If I should go through her or the company I contract through. She said, "I'll put that in for you before I go." That was it. And she did it. It's about 4% which is pretty good. It's been 3 1/2 years but still, it's waaaaaay better than nothing! :blob2: Thanks y'all for pushing and supporting me. :xoxo:

Congratulations Suze! I guess sometimes all you need to do is ask, the worst they can say is no, right? But in this instance they said yes, way to go! :blob2:

Great news Suze!! :blob1: :woohoo: :blob2: Isn't it great when it happens?

I got a new job on Monday. It looks like I'll be getting up to $1300 a month more than I used to get in my old job! :) This first week has been pretty cool too. I got a bottle of champagne on Monday, the staff (about 500 in my building) all got a complimentary American breakfast following the takeover from a US firm (we had pancakes, muffins, waffles, bagels etc). Today we all got a free American lunch and tomorrow we have a free bar at a local football club for us.. it seems a really great, friendly place and all the staff get looked after. Very different from my old career!!

I've moved from the retail sector to the financial sector and there is a big difference in how you get valued for you skills. I'm very fortunate.

Congrats to everyone who got raises! I don't get raises. :( I get paid by how much work I do...so....but I love my job, so, it's all good. I don't have insurance, though, which is bad.

Retail sucks, MFM. I worked at the Dollar General for 4 days then quit, and NEVER went back to retail.

Well done! I myself have been with best buy for 4 years as of today, 4/7/06. I am due a "yearly review" and usually the raise is about a buck, so I'm looking forward to that...if my lazy boss will get off his bum and do it that is. Last year, my review was 3 months late. It's ok, cause they give you backpay, but it'd be nice to have it on time for once.

hey Demon...when do you venture South? Massey Uni?

Oh Massey was being a bitch about letting me in. I had plenty of credits and all that, but they wanted a portfolio of work...which here in the states, your first 2 years is just basic courses...i have no portfolio on get into the program I want to. I could "fake" one...make up some drawings, etc...but I'd be cheating myself because I'd be that much behind all the other kids. They DO have an 8 week program to see where your skill level is at, and then you can gain admittance, and I am more likely to take that route.

But, to answer your question...leaving for New Zealand....in 8 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so ready to get out of here. Its like the last few months of your senior year at school.

tuigirl
04-07-2006, 04:47 PM
wow..how exciting! so you also have to hang about for 8 weeks in NZ while they look at your work?? thats a bit weird, I guess you could look at it as a bit of a holiday.

Oh no, I'll be in NZ for 12 months...regardless of whether I get into school or not. I am hoping I either get a permanent work offer, or can get into school, because then I can apply for the appropriate extended visas and stay longer. Then again, I may not WANT to stay after 12 months...could get home sick, who knows? But I'm trying not to think about that, lest it ruin the experience for me.
