Im in LOVE with David Bowie at the moment - I just picked up 'Reality', 'Reality Tour DVD' 'Heathen' & 'Scary Monsters' - And I have to say - WOW

How freakin great Is David Bowie? His albums are bloody awesome :blob2: 'Lets Dance' is quite commercial, but really good, 'Scary Monsters' is absolutley amazing - 'Ashes to Ashes' has to be one of the greatest songs ever :blob1:

His late 80's to late 90's stuff is absolute garbage, and I mean real crap - But 2002's 'Heathen' is some of the best Bowie stuff I have heard, and 2003's 'Reality' is almost as good. I did hear he was supposed to have a new album out this year - and I can't wait

Any other Bowie fans lurking :)

I have always had and always will have an absurd crush on David Bowie. I was introduced to his music at a very early age (about 5 or 6)by my older sis, which would've been in the Let's Dance era and it blossomed from there.

Ahhhh, Labyrinth...the pseudo mullet, the Kevin Aucoin style make-up and oh....that majestic codpiece. That, my friend, sealed the deal on the life-long crush. Mmm hmm.

Right now the song of choice is "I'm Afraid of Americans". Blew the f*cking roof off of his last tour and I swear I melted straight into my seat when I saw it live. Yummy.

Glad you're loving some Bowie...isn't that Reality Tour DVD just the most awesome thing you've ever seen/heard? I watch that DVD at least once a week. I would LOVE to have it on c.d., the man is a fabulous genius!

I do like someof his stuff, but for the most part, he's a little too out there for my tastes. A great talent though for sure.

Yay Bowie!!

I like to play "Changes" & I like listening to "Aladdin Sane" the song, which is arguably his greatest song.

Cool sig pic, David.

I like Aladdin Sane too, however, from that album I would have to say that either "Drive in Saturday" or "Watch That Man" are my favorite songs.

I can't pick an overall favorite song though, Bowie's got an impressive and extensive catalogue of material, it's too much to choose from!

I believe Bowie's song "Sunday" to be one of the greatest ever. And what a remarkable way to start an album. Picking "Heathen" up the day it came out and playing it as soon as I got back to my car is one of my fondest musical memories. "Sunday," followed by "Cactus," followed by "Slip Away," followed by "Slow Burn," etc. Bowie was back on ****ing top, man. There still isn't a week that goes by where I don't pop that album into my stereo.

I don't think all of his early to mid-nineties stuff is total crap, though. I do have a soft spot for the "Black Tie White Noise" album, which I am unable to explain. I also quite like the "Outside" and "Earthling" albums, for the most part, though "Hours..." is still pretty unlistenable seven years later.

The Reality DVD is incredible, performance-wise. The schizophrenic editing threatens to break my sanity at certain points, but what a show. "Life On Mars" from that DVD is beyond words.

In summation, Bowie is love.

Isn't 'Heathen' just amazing. I love all those tracks you mentioned - plus 'Ive Been Looking' & my very favourite 'I Will be Your Slave'

I don't like anything from the 90's of David's. 'Hours...' is some of the worst stuff I have ever heard, and 'Black Tie White Noise' is even worse :sorry: I do however have a soft spot for 'Tonight' - even though commercial, still really enjoyable.

But nothing comes close to the greatness of 'Heathen'

Its nice to see you back here Diss

Oh yeah? Well I like Let's Dance! For died in the wool Bowie fans that's like poison, even HE denounced that album for quite some time. But I got ta have me some China Girl...LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that song till the end of time.

And can I just say that I'm glad to see him smiling again? He's a beautiful, beautiful man, I mean, just LOOK!

I loves me some Bowie! I just got the remastered Scary Monsters CD and there's stuff on there I don't recall hearing before. It's greatness...I've seen his most recent tour, and the Serious Moonlight tour.

And Let's Dance rocks cuz Stevie Ray Vaughan is on it! :p

When the "Heroes" album came out, I used to play the track "Moss Garden" & daydream by my window as I looked out over the vast expanse of the Arcadia hanging gardens. Sometimes, too, I would hop on my bike & tear off into the hinterlands (the San Gabriel foothills), pretending that I was Frodo Baggins & that the ringwraiths were after me.

David Bowie wrote "Beauty & the Beast," which influenced Stevie to write her "Beauty & the Beast." Stevie & David had many a demitasse together, dreaming of the drawn-out death rattles of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the sunset of a glorious era, & the essence of protracted, dying concupiscence--visionary & profound--captured by the playwright, poet & novelist Artur Schnitzler in such works as "La Ronde" & "Sterben."

In fact, I believe that you cannot truly understand Stevie's title song "Bella Donna" until you have read "Sterben," a novella of terrifying magnificence written during the waning of the Hapsburgs which shares many of the themes of "Bella Donna."

Love Bowie, even his fluff songs.

But my favorite album is 'Earthling.' No question. Heathen was quite amazing as well. I tend to prefer his latter work.

Really?

I cant say I have heard 'Earthling' in its entirety, but I don't like the singles that were off that album at all. I personally think that the 90's wasn't the time for David to be releasing material - the 90's style did not fit him.

David - I did think that maybe Stevie had had some sort of influence from Bowie's BATB, its nice to hear it from somebody else.

If you're a Bowie lover you should know better than to focus only on his singles. He is a album oriented artist, always has been.

Earthling is hyper, danceable with more bass and beats. The singles are pretty good, such as Little Wonder and I'm Afraid of Americans (Becoming more poignant each year...lol).

But songs like Dead Man Walking, Seven Years In Tibet, Looking For Satellites and Telling Lies are genius and Bowie at his very best.

Beg, steal or borrow Earthling, in it's complete album form. They re-released it with remastering and extra tracks including a Moby remix of Dead Man Walking. Amazing!!!

I never use that many exclamations, but let me do it againi for this album and that track: !!!

Your a Stevie fan, so I think I'll take your advice and order the album in for my store - so even if I don't like it, I can just try and sell it to a customer

You've got me interested

What do you think of the rest of his latter albums?

Edit: Have you heard Tin Machine I & II? Im pretty interested...

Tin Machine was interesting, rocky and noisy and hyped up...but I prefer him with his new(er) band. They are a group of badasses! His drummer is fan-f*cking-tastic! Dude hits the drums harder than anyone since John Bonham imo, and Gail Ann Dorsey is an amazing bassist and vocalist who compliments Bowie perfectly.

And as someone else said, Earthling is a great album! And to the comment that the 90's sound didn't do much for David, I have to disagree by saying that David makes his own sound no matter what the decade, that's what makes him such an innovative, creative artist. He's the trendsetter for the decade, not the other way around. And anyway, I don't see what's so 90's about Earthling anyway...wasn't the 90's all about grunge music and bad rock that sounded like beer commercial jingles?

I certainly enjoy Heathen and Hours. I have yet to purchase or hear Reality. Which will be my next Bowie purchase.

Not even ventured into the Tin Machine work. Let me know your thoughts, but most especially Earthling.

Earthling dropped in 1997, quite the end of grunge (and a happy departure from Bowie's Outisde album), but the rise in bad rock didn't stop there. It's still going on. lol.

I can't bring myself to listen to "Earthling" - the singles are just SO crap its unbelieveable. Songs like "Little Wonder" "Dead Man Walking" "Seven Years in Tibet" & "Im Afraid of Americans" they almost make me feel sorry for Bowie. He is just seriously uncool. Its like your Dad trying to rap - it just doesn't work :sorry:

Im starting to enjoy "Hours..." a little more though - "Thursdays Child" is actually quite an enjoyable song (the cover design is horrible for the album though).

Although I enjoy "Heathen" most, I would recommend "Reality" as it is probably the most consistent Bowie album since "Scary Monsters". Most definately the sound he suits the most.

What an awsome thread!! David Bowie rocks!!! "Rebel Rebel" is one of my top 20 favorite songs ever. "Bring me the disco king" from the underworld soundtrack is cool too. The version of "china girl" from the story tellers cd too. "under pressure is also one of my favorite songs ever! (damn that vanilla ice) definatley slow burn from heathen. OOHH, and did I mention that LABRYNTH is still, I'm not afraid to say, my second favorite movie ever! inspired me to learn how to contact juggle with a crystal ball.

I've been a fan since i was 14 years old. The first single i bought was Space Oddity and i've been to several of his concerts. The man has the greatest voice ever and allways does his songs differently. I'm afraid i prefer his earlier work - The man who sold the world, Ziggy Stardust,Hunky Dory etc.
Even when he sings The little drummer boy with Bing Crosby it still sounds amazing !

Exactly but I think you get my point. I don't see how Bowie was "90's" sounding  because the 90's, to me, only had those two sounds: grunge and bad rock that evolved out of grunge. That's pretty much it.
