(ChartAttack) Courtney Love has sold 25 per cent of the Nirvana publishing catalogue for a reported $50 million U.S.

Nirvana
Courtney Love has sold 25 per cent of her share of Nirvana's publishing catalogue, which she inherited in 1994 after her late husband Kurt Cobain committed suicide, to Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music Publishing.

"I took a strategic partner, Larry Mestel, to help me co-manage the estate because it was overwhelming," Love told RollingStone.com. "The affairs of Nirvana are so massive and so huge, and they've all fallen on my lap."

Love was left with 98 per cent of Nirvana's publishing rights following Cobain's death, while his bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic split the remaining two per cent.

"I own almost all of [the publishing] and it proved to be too much for me. I needed a partner to take Kurt Cobain's songs and bring them into the future and into the next generation. And this guy's the guy to do it."

It's speculated that Mestel paid more than $50 million U.S. for the rights, which should pay off any expenses Love will have for her upcoming album.

"The appeal to me is that [Kurt was] one of the most important songwriters of his time," said Mestel, the former COO/GM of Virgin Records. "Kurt was an incredible songwriter and Courtney is an exceptionally talented person herself.

"So I felt the combination of Courtney's creativity and the things I can add can really help in creating more value for these copyrights."

Love emphasized that she and Mestel won't spread Nirvana music around aimlessly to exploit Cobain's legacy. "We're going to remain very tasteful and we're going to [retain] the spirit of Nirvana and take Nirvana places it's never been before."

When talk of the catalogue sale arose earlier this year, U2 frontman Bono was rumoured to be interested, but nothing materialized.

Yeah, 50 mil. nice. I would totally sell, too. And she only sold 25%. But then, I don't like Nirvana. I do like 50 million dollars. Maybe others would be more upset by this.

It is almost certain that if she lives long enough she'll sell the remaining 48% as well.I do like her work up through Celebrity Skin and a couple songs on her last one .I think the old gal is spent though but ya never know.

I love Courtney, mess that she is. BUT.

Why didn't she just sell to Dave & Krist? That kind of pisses me off. They were Nirvana along with Kurt & she fought them every step of the way when it came to dividing everything up as far as the music after Kurt died. She WANTED control! Now she turns around & sells part of it to some random business guy cuz she can't handle it? Dave & Krist couldn't have done that? That pisses me off a little.

And this makes me nervous:

Love emphasized that she and Mestel won't spread Nirvana music around aimlessly to exploit Cobain's legacy. "We're going to remain very tasteful and we're going to [retain] the spirit of Nirvana and take Nirvana places it's never been before."

I can hear it now, Heart Shaped Box being played in a jewelry commercial.

Did anyone see Gus Van Sant's "Last Days" that was based on Kurt Cobain's imagined last days of his life before his suicide? I just wonder if the depiction of the band members in the movie are based on Dave's and Krist's real-life personalities...were they really selfish, self absorbed assholes like the movie suggests? If so, maybe that's why Courtney is trying to keep all of this out of their hands  but I don't know how accurate that movie was in depicting things as they really were. But still, maybe there's stuff that went on that we don't know about, maybe they really WERE assholes who, in Courtney's mind, exploited Kurt while he was alive.

She had to do SOMETHING to finance her habits.

Oh...and I don't buy into the myth that Kurt offed himself. He was murdered...by a Courtney hired hit man.

I thought the scene with Kim Gordon was particularly interesting (and moving), since she was actually friends with Kurt. It certainly does make you wonder how much of that movie was taken from real life.

That was a truly chilling scene. What did she say, something like, "are you scared to tell your child that you're a rock and roll cliche?" Dude, that scene freaked me out.

Yeah, but when Courtney's own DAD is suspicious, that kind of eliminates the "outlandish" for me.

But if her Dad is anything like her then he's insane and thus lacks credibility. I don't actually know a thing about him though. I've seen a few Web pages about this theory and I just don't buy it.

I thought I remember some sort of criminal investigation into Kurt's death. It may not have lead anywhere, but that leads me to believe that there was at least some reason to be suspicious.

But, see, it's not JUST her dad. There is also a guy who (reluctantly) claimed (on camera) he was the one Courtney OFFERED $10,000 to off Kurt. He was found dead, crushed by a train, two weeks after the initial airing of the film.

there is a website (I locate it again in a few minutes) that have some serious "incriminating" audio tape evidence that shows that Courtney had something to do with Kurt Go-bang's death (The audio tapes were secretly recorded by Love's former "Private detective"...And she sure as hell couldnt keep her mouth shut on these tapes.)

Yeah, I know it isn't just him, I hadn't heard this though, have you seen the tape of him saying that? It creeps me out to think she could've had anything to do with it. Though I know there are many unanswered questions.

Yes, those are pretty damning. Especially where she says "he couldn't have killed himself", like this is what fans will say later, as though she's trying to cover her tracks in advance. Like, before his body has been found, she knows he is dead. However, it could be argued that he'd been suicidal and depressed for a long time so her thinking he might kill himself was "normal".

Even worse though is the fact that she paid some people to plant the story of her being in the hospital and trying to manipulate the media into believing it was a suicide attempt. That's really disgusting and not indicitive of a woman worried about her missing husband.

What happened to Detective Terry? It says on the site he was murdered but no more detail than that. There is a lot of context missing from this site. There should be copies of the letters referenced if they want people to really follow the story. Obviously their bias is that Courtney did it and they are fitting the facts around that theory. I don't see any real evidence though.

Okay, I haven't read all about this, but when someone names someone else as doing something illegal, then dies shortly thereafter, there is usually something stinky going on.
I mean, C'mon. That's quite the f*cking coincidence. Who the hell gets crushed by a train?

A junkie passed out on the tracks? I'm just playing devil's advocate. Oops, I've got my strand hat on! It seems very fishy but is possibly a coincidence. If she did do something maybe this is why she's getting away with it, because she and everyone else around her are so screwed up no one can believe she could/would plot this way. The whole thing is very bizarre.

Oh, I didn't know the guy was a junkie. But still. Why would a junkie hang out at the railroad tracks anyway? And if he was just walking by the tracks, what are the chances he'd fall on them?
Did everyone just say it was suicide? Was he still a junkie at the time of death? Does the thing Chili posted answer these questions?

Junkies aren't exactly rational. He could have been homeless and just wandering and then passed out? I actually don't know that he was a junkie, I am speculating given that the Cobains were.

The police figured early that it was a suicide and didn't take prints off the gun and missed other important details that should be part of a thorough investigation. So the police and officials decided this was a suicide but a lot of others had questions.

Yes, I believe Kurt was still a heroine addict at the time of his death.

No, I meant did they say the (alleged) junkie committed suicide on the tracks, and I was asking if the alleged junkie was still a junkie at the time of his squishing. And at the time of his taped thingy saying Courtney offered him money.

Neither ever made a public statement on her "involvement" in Kurt's death. But I recall that neither Kurt's bandmates cared for Courtney (When Kurt was alive)...They thought she was a nuisance.

One interesting rumor that has long been going around is that Kurt wrote all the music that became a couple of the albums released by Hole.
