So I was thinking about this after reading the Immortal Beloved thread and how Gary Oldman made what could've been a sh*t movie perfectly watcheable. So who are the actors you rely on to make a movie good? Like you know its gotta have something redeemable in it if they're there?

Some of mine:

-Laura Linney
-William H. Macy
-Patricia Clarkson
-Phillip Seymour Hoffman
-Hope Davis
-good ol' Gary Oldman

DeNiro
Bette Midler
Jack Nicholson
Kathy Bates
Diane Keaton
Tom Hanks
Anthony Hopkins
Jodie Foster
Dustin Hoffman
Barbara Streisand...

-Sean Penn
-Gary Oldman (again)
-Tom Hanks
-Dame Judi Dench
-Jack Nicholson

DeNiro used to but I think he's sold out lately.

Bette Midler
Jack Nicholson
Kathy Bates
Diane Keaton
Tom Hanks

I agree with each one of these, esp. Barbra, Bette and Diane. I'll also go with Richard on Pfeiffer.

Michelle Pfiefer
Jodie Foster (Can't wait for her new movie this weekend)
John Travolta
Jennifer Coolidge (She has been in the stupidest movies and TV shows, but she is the funniest woman on the planet!)
Juliane Moore
Kate Winslet

In order:
Guys-
Gary Oldman
Christopher Walken
Morgan Freeman (Legendary status imo. The guy can act his ass off!)
Willem Defoe
Ving Rhames
Jason Stratham (ok, so he's not a household name yet, but he will be, and currently holds HOTTIE status!)
Hmm, that's all I can come up w/ now. The others that have been mentioned rock, but these guys imo really deserve their due!

Chicks-
Michelle Pfeiffer
Angelina Jolie (freak of nature, but billiant in Girl Interupted & Gia)
Chloe Webb (Has been, but in her day she RAWKED!)
Jodie Foster
Cher (YES CHER!)
Charlize Theron
& Milla Jovovich!

Miss Vicky
03-21-2006, 11:20 PM
Joaquin Phoenix
Johnny Depp
Russell Crowe

I should say though that all three have been in some really awful movies, but all of them were awful despite the fine performances by these guys.

On the flip side, there are also many actors that I have the opposite reaction to, that is to say that I WILL NOT watch a movie if they are in it unless there is a very compelling reason to overlook their presence. Here are a few of those:

Tom Cruise
Billy Bob Thornton
Halle Berry
Pierce Brosnan
Orlando Bloom
Jude Law
Adam Sandler
Jim Carrey
Mike Meyers
Owen Wilson
George Clooney

This is great list already, and most of those I would have picked have been mentioned (so impressed with Patricia Clarkson!) but I could add some...

Adam Brody
Daniel Day Lewis
Don Cheadle
Laura Dern
Cate Blanchett
Sissy Spacek

My all-time favorite actress died not that long ago: Anne Bancroft.

Jack Nicholson
Jodie Foster
Parker Posey
Bette Davis
Isabelle Adjani (okay, actually you can go wrong with some of her movies, but not with her)
Julianne Moore
Kevin Kline
Don Cheadle
Owen Wilson
Michelle Pfeiffer (I sometimes think I might pay just to stare at her for an hour and a half, she is so pretty).
Christopher Walken
Phillip S. H.
Edit - Diane Lane. I guess you can go wrong, but I just love her, think she's gorgeous.

Oh, I did this without reading anyone else's list.

One that I didn't notice mentioned but a favorite for many years is Meryl Streep. It was good to see Philip Seymour Hoffman recognized this year and someone that Amber mentioned, Parker Posey, is also a great talent.

That actually is enough said.
I can't believe I forgot her. She's extremely compelling, a huge favorite. Kids, if you haven't seen "Girl Most Likely To..." you might like it. I think the girls will like it more.

Beachwood Mac - I think Meryl is always automatically on the list. *but seriously* or, she made the list. Or something. :p

I can't believe I forgot Meryl freakin' Streep. I love how non-acty she is. Every line delivered is so natural and never feels scripted.

Oh and I don't know if you guys know who he is, but I love, LOVE Sam Rockwell. Probably one of the most talented and underappreciated actors around. But I also was saying that about Phillip Seymour Hoffman this time last year and look at the ol' boy now!

1)Johnny Depp.( I don't like all of his movies, but he does not make mistakes in his choices)
2)Diane Keaton (I even liked the "Father of the Bride" because of her!)
3)Tom Hanks (I even liked "Ladykillers" because of him).
4)Benicio Del Toro(I'll just watch anything he is in :xoxo: )
5)Christopher Walken (He makes even silly movies watchable IMO. He is one of the reasons "The Deerhunter" is one of the best movies ever. And he made me cry in "Catch me if you can").

A bit off-subject, but I 'll also watch anything Steven Soderbergh directs.

Must add Jeremy Irons to the list.

And Joan and John Cusack.

amber
03-22-2006, 04:50 PM
I like Amber's list! I would add Johnny Depp, Bill Murray and Jeff Bridges, who I think is very underrated. I love the fact you included Owen Wilson, who I adore.
Did I tell you I once interviewed Kevin Kline? I might have. Anyway he was lovely and very theatrical and actory, I was not disappointed. :)
oooooh...I'm so jeal. :blob2: He's a Scorpio, too, and Phoebe Cates is a Cancer. You know I had to say that. But moving on -

I think Jeff Bridges is underrated, too - he's not quite a favorite though, although I definitely like some of his performances a lot. My mom loves him. Bill Murray is great, of course.
I used the criteria "would I see a movie just because they are in it?"

I almost wanted to add Peter O'toole and Michael Caine and Anthony Hopkins - but I guess they'd be right below that criteria...

I think you know I don't care much for Depp, although I wish I looked like him...
Owen Wilson is always funny, no matter what the rest of the movie is doing. I think he shares your sign as well, by the way.

I'd also like to add that I always enjoy watching Goldie Hawn, so she could probably be on my list - although I guess "can't go wrong" wouldn't apply in general, just for me.

Edit - Richard - Jeremy Irons is very hot to me, good choice. I only have real lust crushes on very few actor men, and he is one. Jack is the other.
And John Cusack! of course! He has to be on the list!

amber
03-22-2006, 04:58 PM
I love the Cusacks too, although John has let me down in recent years. Must Love Dogs was dreadful. And Serendipity wasn't much better.
That was sad, because Diane Lane was in it, too.:( She's weird, though, she doesn't seem to pick her movies exceptionally well. Although, I really don't think she gets sent as many scripts, so she does okay for what she is sent. She has a few real good ones, though. I've always been sad she isn't more famous and popular.

Under The Tuscan Sun is one of my fav. movies ever...

Peter O'Toole and Michael Caine are always fantastic, even in terrible films. Not quite as mad about Anthony Hopkins, I think Legends Of The Fall and all those Hannibal movies has put me off him a little. Love Remains Of The Day though.

I love Goldie, and, I'm a little embarrassed to say, Kurt Russell too. Actually if the criteria is "would I see a movie because they are in it" then I must of course add Mr Ferrell and The Rock  I have no idea why I like The Rock so much, I just do.

Just looked, Owen Wilson is November 18, so he is a Scorpio. How do you always know these things Amber?

Because I don't like to think about important things, I remember actors birthdays instead. Goldie Hawn is the 20th, Meg Ryan and Jodie Foster are the 19th. (Yes, I'm the only one who loves Meg Ryan).

The Rock is pretty cute, but I can't explain your love either. Yes, you must add Will to your list.
Kurt Russel is awesome. He's very likeable. fairly good actor, can do comedy or serious passably....

Yes, Peter O'toole is always an especially bright spot for me. God, he's the best interview, too! His stories....hilarious man. Did you see Rock my World? (may be differently titled in UK. Alicia Silverstone and Joan Plowright and a bunch of cute boys were in it).

Triviality is my domain Amber. Anything pointless that isn't important or somebody needs to know then I'll know it....

Actually, Bill Murray is another, as mentioned, to add to my list.

There's an English actor called Bill Nighy (he played Billy Mac in Love Actually). He's pretty solid and entertaining too.

Can I also suggest Daniel Craig? Damn fine actor and from my region of the country. Now he's got the Bond gig it might change things but I feel he will make Bond rather than Bond break him (as I believe it's done with all of them, maybe with the exception of Connery)

Peter O'Toole is the best. I also miss Richard Harris. They were great hellraisers in their day, but poetic with it

You could possibly add in Oliver Reed there too.

I don't think it's The Rock's looks I like, so much as his capacity to beat people up in movies while things explode in the background! Sometimes I just enjoy really dumb movies Amber.

Peter O'Toole is the best. I also miss Richard Harris. They were great hellraisers in their day, but poetic with it
Yeah, that's what a lot of his great stories are about.
I like dumb movies, too. For instance, I just enjoyed War of the Worlds.
I have to say, I haven't missed many Tom Cruise movies. *waits for hideous backlash*.

I used to like Daniel Craig a lot. I loved him in "Sylvia" (I thought he was a very convincing Ted Hughes, even though he didn't look like him) and in "Mother", but I 'm not very sure about the Bond thing. I am one of those who believe that Clive Owen should be Bond :o And I didn't like him in "Munich" so much. I think he is much better in smaller, more indie kind of films.

I love most of his movies. He's a great "popcorn" actor. You can tune in and drop out. The only trouble is, whatever the role, you still believe its Tom Cruise. Must be the smile.

I still stand by my view he was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar for Rain Man by Hoffman. It was his best performance in terms of believing in the character.

From what I've seen of filming for Casino Royale it's gonna be VERY different from all previous Bond films. Very brutal and far more realistic. Craig wouldn't commit to the role for a whole year until the script convinced him it would work.

Anybody living in the UK can see an exclusive interview from the set in Nassau on Film 2006 with Jonathan Ross this Friday night.

Has anyone mentioned Catherine Keener yet? She's always great.

Catherine Keener is great. And one of the most beautiful actresses. She looked better than anyone else at the Oscars, IMO

Yeah, I guess he will be different, but good-different. I think it was silly of people to bash the producers so much about it. Do you know about the website craignotbond.com??I mean they are not completely ignorant after all. they had their reasons. I preferred Clive Owen because I think he would be closer to Connery's Bond, but I tend to think it would be a sort of superficial choice, if you know what I mean.

BOTFOJ. Another very good movie. Don't think he got the praise here because of the "It's Tom Cruise trying to play it serious" mentality from the press. I guess it's why he's since tended to stick to his own comfort zone. It guarantees success. I love Collateral (Am I the only one? ) and I can't wait to see Michael Mann's next epic, Miami Vice.

I like a lot of Tom Cruise movies but I'm still on Trey Parker and Matt Stone's side. He is just freaky these days!

He's not helped himself lately. He does come across as a nut job. Since the "contract" with Nicole ended and his change in PR, things have gotten much worse for his image.

Great minds think alike :) Her presence in a film definitely makes me want to watch it. I wish she had won the Oscar over Weisz.

I haven't seen Keener in Capote yet, but anyhow, I am not so crazy about Weisz. I kind of liked her in the Constant Gardener, but apart from that, all of her previous films pretty much sucked (sorry for that:o ). I think that Keener is fabulous. Have you seen a film where she palays Ben Stiller's girlfriend who later hooks up with Nasstasja Kinski?

I really wanted Brosnan to continue. I thought Craig was a rash decision and I was pissed initially.

Then I studied his work (I believe Layer Cake convinced the Bond producers of his talent. Rent it out if you haven't seen it!)

Now I've seen some of the Casino Royale footage I think he is 100% right for the role. The work is far too physical and violent for Pierce to do for sure.

the craignotbond website is pathetic. How can you judge him without a film to judge him on?

He's made some good films. Always entertaining. I thought Patriot Games was very good. he's a serious but "popcorn" actor too.

Not afraid of pushing the action despite his age. He's gonna be 65 when production starts on Indiana Jones 4 and 71 when Star Wars Episode VII starts shooting!

Christian Bale
Did you see him the brilliant film 'The Machinist'? Was it ever painful to watch. Which of course is intentional. I love every one of Brad Anderson's films. He's my rising star and someone to keep an eye on. I'd love to be in one of his films.

Maggie Gylenhaal
'Secretary' ROCKED. She was also one of the best things in 'Happy Endings.' These are the only 2 films I've seen with her, so far.

You've never seen Donnie Darko? Get thee to a rental store post haste! She is really good in that too.

And yes, The Machinist was amazing. Christian Bale is definitely in my top 5 favorite actors of all time and that's saying something! Not only is he hot as hell, he's one helluva actor. I am so thoroughly impressed by him in everything I've seen him in, (except that heinous Dragon movie he was in with stupid Matthew what's his name) seriously, and to think he started out as a child actor?? Phenomenal.

Edit: Oh, and another actress I'm starting to really like is Zoey DeChanel. She was so f*cking rad in "The Good Girl" with Jennifer Aniston. I thought that movie rocked and J.A. was surprisingly good in it!

Will add Donnie Darko to my Netflix queue. Didn't know she was in it. Speaking of Maggie and 'Secretary,' I think James Spader is also a fantastic actor. Loved him and Susan Sarandon in 'White Castle.'

Christian is good, but he's not in my top 5 at all. I actually only really enjoyed his performances in 2 films: The Machinist and American Psycho.

That dragon film was horrible. I only rented it for my love affair with Alice Krige...and she was only in it for 5 minutes! Pissed me off. Wretched film.

Oh yeah? I only rented it for Christian! He looked damn hot, and that's all that movie had going for it. Matthew Mc-whatever hurts my everything so he can screw off (sorry Paula). American Psycho was a great film too, loved the black comedy, I thought Christian did a great job of being utterly hilarious one minute and then darkly disturbing the next---I'm telling you, the man has RANGE as an actor! He's great! That book is insane...Bret Easton Ellis is one sick puppy.

Yes, you must rent Donnie Darko! It's a great movie, very surreal and warpy. It also has another one of my favorite actresses in it, Mary McDonnell.

Christian Bale is my personal god.

Oldman is too much of a ham for me, but that movie he wrote and directed (and thankfully didn't star in), "Nil By Mouth," is phenomenal. The video he directed for Debbie Harry and Perry Farrell's song "The Patience Bossa" is a gas, too.

I wonder why he hasn't directed anything else, as Nil By Mouth is an incredible movie.
I didn't know Debbie Harry and Perry Farrell had collaborated.

Debbie and Perry riding around on tricycles and singing about staying patient. It was for a children's album called "A World of Happiness." Their song was for Pediatric AIDS, I believe.

Crazy playing crazy...

It's got Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke (Magda from AbFab). Pretty hard movie to watch, but it's great. He's got some chops behind the camera, that's for sure.

You will love it. It's kinda like he's Patrick Bateman from American Psycho but instead of being a homocidal maniac, he's a superhero with a bit less ego.

I think that about sums it up

He looks beyond fab too--he put all the weight and muscle back on that he lost for The Machinist and let me just say, it's all good .

Love her, especially in Firecracker and Once Around.

Jessica Lange
Wonderful choice. Adored her in Big Fish, when she slips into the bathtub, she just takes you right with her. Always believable, even in King Kong.

Linda Fiorentino
Yah! Where did show go?

Lena Olin
We both have talked about Lena before.

Jennifer Jason Leigh
And with Christian Bale in The Machinist. Just saw her in Palindromes (not so good).

Rupert Everett
Don't laugh...loved him and Kathy Bates in "Unconditional Love.' I should have hated it, but something about its quirkiness made me really love it. I watched it 3x in a row. I met Kathy bates and told her this. She loved my enthusiasm. She's a true giggler in person.

"Equilibrium" was surprisingly good, and he was swell in it, for a movie that has all the originality of an Ashlee Simpson song. Some of his movies are utter crap, but he's so great in everything. His range is immeasurable.

Love her, especially in Firecracker and Once Around.

My favorite is The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom. I'd be hard pressed to find a performance that makes me howl more than that one. The woman is genius. A Life Less Ordinairy is almost unwatchable, but she somehow saves it. And with gusto.

Wonderful choice. Adored her in Big Fish, when she slips into the bathtub, she just takes you right with her. Always believable, even in King Kong.

Love that scene. Albert Finney is another great one, too. Have you seen Titus? That's Jessica Lange at the top of her game, man.

Yah! Where did show go?

Beats me. Probably still embarrassed over Jade.

We both have talked about Lena before.

I would love for MGM (or Sony, now that they own all of MGM's flicks) to re-release Romeo Is Bleeding with a commentary by Olin. It's such a blast watching her in that one.

And with Christian Bale in The Machinist. Just saw her in Palindromes (not so good).

Putrid. I thought Storytelling was awful, but Palindromes kicked it's ass in the awful department. Ellen Barkin was pretty good, though.

Don't laugh...loved him and Kathy Bates in "Unconditional Love.' I should have hated it, but something about its quirkiness made me really love it. I watched it 3x in a row. I met Kathy bates and told her this. She loved my enthusiasm. She's a true giggler in person.

You're ****ting me. No laughter here. I EVEN BOUGHT IT. The scene where Maudie shoots the gun and goes flying into the air? I swear, I almost lost all bladder control. It's one of the weirdest movies I've seen; Julie Andrews, Barry Manilow, and Sally Jesse? Just plain weird and delightful. Love it!

Rupert is also really good in Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man) and The Comfort of Strangers. He's very underrated. Such a shame that he ****ed up his face, though.

Awww...Good to be thought of.

Corpse Bride is such a good little movie. Short and sweet. Depp is even a great voice actor.

You have no idea. After the rental watching 3x in a row, I ran out immediately and bought it myself. The 'Don't Look Now' reference had me laughing so hard I literally had to pause the film to gain composure. That dwarf actress killed me, scene after scene. I agree, the weirdest movie that simply works. It makes me feel so good. I wish I had the damn DVD with me when I met Kathy Bates so she could sign it. She's adorable.

There are so many good actors out there and most of you touched on people, I didn't see her in the 7 pages I skimmed through but I LOVE Kate.

Laura Linney too...she was mentioned but that girl, whatever she does...it shines.

However, some of them are "not very attractive"

I fell in love with Sam Rockwell in hitchhiker's guide, and then I watched...Confessions...and he was good, but I didn't love him as much. Honestly, I think it was that cheesy beard/mustache/long hair combo with the big cheesy smile. He cracked me up. Weak chins bug me. I want to give that one with Patricia Clarkson and W.H. You can't gauge the hotness that is Sam Rockwell by Confessions - they totally dweebed him up in that role to resemble Chuck Barriss. His chin is not that weak- maybe a little bashful.:)
