Alright...its chop ground sirloin/beef with I think carrots, peas, corn, and onions over it and then mashed potatoes over it...and yes it's REALLY good if it's homemade!!!

I like the Trader Joe's frozen version.

And if this thread gets more posts than a tribute to Humphrey, I'm going to be a little :(

j/k

A good Shepherd's Pie is a great dish.. You need really good tender meat. Nothing worse than crap beef, there is no taste.

David you need to check out this dish if you like pies. One of the best.

Shepherd's Pie is made with minced lamb, hence the "shepherd" bit

If you make it with minced beef, it's a Cottage Pie. Either way they're brilliant and pretty easy to get right :)

I can't profess to be a purist (my family is primarily Fremch) but my mum used to make this all the time. It consisted of (in order from bottom to the top):

-lean, seasoned ground beef
-layer of creamed corn - and no frozen ****, she made it herself
-garlic mashec potato
-baked with a thin layer of cheese on top

...and then smothered in dark gravy. OMG, its beyond words. Mega comfort food for me.

Yes of course, although technically you can "herd" any farmyard animal I guess but I'm not sure how many cows live in cottages..

You should spend some time here in Cornwall then

I suppose you SHEPherd sheep and cowherd cattle...

You can also put fish in a pie like this and it becomes a Fisherman's Pie :)

I've been thinking of coming down to Cornwall this spring/summer for a few days. I love the coastline and the fresh fish at the local fish 'n' chips shops cannot be beaten (best chippy I've ever experienced was in Looe). It's also the only county to get a proper Cornish pastie that tastes good and is the size of a house.

Then again thinking about it, maybe it's called a Cornish Pastie 'cos it's made with real cornishman. I've heard about these small villages. The old "special" meat.

You've summed the place up very well  Don't talk about the "special meat" though - that's the quickest way to wind up inside the pastry... it's not restricted to Cornishmen you know :wavey:

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a pet peeve of mine ya know!!!!!!

BTW - I make BOTH fabulously.

The key is to use Boursin Cheese, garlic, butter, pepper, and kosher salt in the unskinned potatoes prior to mashing them. Hint a little lemon zest in this goes a long way and is pretty much just fabulous.

Yum! Some of these sound very tasty.

I grew up with our family's version of shepards pie, which perhaps should have been called cottage pie. ??? It had ground beef mixed with a can of tomato soup or tomato sauce on the bottom. Then yellow string beans. Then mashed potato (homemade - not instant - that'd be gross). And then slices of kraft cheese melted on top. Delicious!

All these food posts! It's morning right now and I am in the mood for a huge dinner meal!

That does sound better. My ex made S-Pie...and I hated it with a passion. It's a blob of gobbly-goop. Like a meat stew...but worse, it's baked. I guess it's good to maximize your food dollar.

Really, I wasn't even hungry, and now I'm starving!
Oh well, we got 5 inches of snow yesterday.....I can tell myself that it's still winter, and still okay to eat.

I kind of wish it was still winter. We did get snow flurries today, but not to amount to anything on the ground. I had a dream before I woke up though that we had gotten a snow storm over night and that neighbors still had Christmas lights on their house, and it felt so warm and cozy in that dream....guess maybe it means I am not ready to let winter go....

Yep, heard of it, but never actually been there. It's got a great reputation - a bit like a small piece of the seaside stuck in the middle of London. Supposed to be traditional, but very professional indeed. I'm moving back up to London soon, and I must make an effort to go to this kind of place :)
