View Full Version : Lindsey Buckingham's Agon

David

If most animals are little more than eating machines of nature, Lindsey has an inner quality that strives for something more. Ideas of friendship, beauty & such are just dawning in his primitive subconscious. For Lindsey Buckingham, the musical conflict is like the first glimpse of golden sunlight after years of dwelling in darkness. There had always been glimmers of this light in Lindseed's subconsciousness but it was always clouded by the need to fight & bash & survive. Anyway, coming into the light can be warm and glowing, but it also exposes one's vulnerabilities. This is something Buckinghamseed understands. It's the goal of each of his projects to have his dreams see the light of day. But it's also exposing himself to ridicule. It's one thing for Lindsey to lose his public acclaim or his standing in the group. But the Stevie-as-diva fiasco made him lose face. It wasn't just a royalty check bouncing but his dick being cut off. He'd exposed himself, heart & soul, & he'd been rejected. . . which explains his mighty struggle with his psyche during the years of his exile.

If LB is a creature that has just about outgrown nature & wants something higher, Mick Fleetwood comes to feel affection for LB because he represents the son Mick always wanted but never had. This is an old cliche, to be sure, but it works, & it has an element of innocence lacking in the older group struggles. In the earlier days, the two blonde women in the group were always a hostage of the ruling patriarchy. In the 1976 band, Stevie Hicks came to feel sorry for Lindsey the big ape & didn't want him fired or shamed, but if she could help it she was going to run from his smelly hands as they frailed his plectrum instrument.

Partly, I think it's her way of giving Lindfreed some solace before he dies. Surely she knows that LB is doomed: psychically, at least. It's only a matter of time before the money men at the big record label bust his ass up up real good one way or another.

I'm curious what does everyone think?

is what I think.

The only other thing is that it was only a Stevie diva dickapitation losing of face b/c that's how Lindseed's un-sunful, or pre-sunful, mind interpreted it. He created his own reality, and in doing so created much less sunportunity for himself. And so I can say, affirmatively, that he really is doomed psychically. And you're right, Swheezy sees this.
I think she is very gracious, fighting this long and this hard just to make sure he etc.
But it's not all altruistic, she wants to grasp and glimpse his particular higher reach, for she has a different, yet parallel one. Each wants to leave their earthbound hoities, yet both are so very lame in some integral and inescapable way.

I think he's used to live up to high expectations his whole life. Athletes-family. Be the best. On the other hand the guy is a "feeler". A sensitive and sensible person. He can't live with the American Dream because it is unfair. He can't live with acceptable qualitystandards because they don't lead to perfection. He constantly wrestles with these things neuroticly. He doesn't need to grow up or something, he just should loosen up and be more confident about his muse. Pump it into the world. Release it. I'll buy it.:woohoo:

which is partially the fun of it. Not so much for me as a form of expression; mainly laughing when I see David do IT again.

The most funnest part for me was the obvious invitation to make up new words, imaginary words, but ones that still totally connotate exactly what you mean.
Also to make up stupid Linds and Ess theories that are totally based (or partially based, really) on Whimsey.
It was like weaving a whole new story, with a slightly different - yet mostly the same - Paradigm Basis. It was like if Fleetwood Mac was on the show Night Gallery.

The characters and themes are familiar, but you may place the scenarios and outcomes in an alternate universe while talking about them (the scenarios) -
If you want.
Or, you can say the same old thing that you always think, but substitute new words (ideally, made up words) to have the same meaning, thereby making it fresh. And spicy.
And for god's sake, please do, it is ever so much more amusing than just stating your real opinion that we already know b/c we have heard it a billion times before.

And, could I really be the only one that thinks Ell and Ess NEED a new paradigm to describe them? I thinky notty. I'm fricking sickles of hearing the same old smacker.
Not that I have the answer for what the new paradigm should encompass.
That is something that should be definitively decided by a new thread -

OK Amber, If you want MY opinion.

I think it is entirely concievable in this particular field of vision that Lindsey's crop has been left to shrivel and die. The harvester was not serviced on a regular basis, too much time was spent chewing the grass and ultimately he couldn't perform when needed. The sun shines, hay is made yet not on his particular farm. He wore the farmboy outfit but couldn't use it when he needed to.

His confabulatory nature dictates the truth is what one percieves it to be, occasionally paradoxical but not usually. Phrases are reiterative. This erimetical creature is a non-conformist entity that thrives in a set-apart environment. Indeed, this animal is a troglodyte by nature and should be seen as such. Changes to this scenario are seen as deeply perturbing by him.

However there are instances when this erimetic individual has emitted a mercurial exuberance, particularly when led out of his comfort zone and into a wider arena. Public adulation of his application of facility in a given environment is in my opinion his most thrilling application of natural endowment. This is the domain he needs to fulfill his unmentioned desires and in turn results in the approbation the said individual ultimately requires.

His personal and public atonement with his former spiritual confederate has amplified the need of Lindsey to thrive in the above mentioned domain. While rumours of assignations are not proven there is some doubt with individuals as to his relationship with this particular musical deity.

One thing is certain, Lindsey must break free of his solitudarian existence and be able to present a document worthy of commendation within his chosen field. He must somehow satisfy his insatiable inner self and when this is accomplished he can break out of his microcosm and go forward with an almost light speed acceleration. Only time will tell if the aforementioned actions take place.

If you read my post so absolutely literally that any sense of squib, broadside, lampoon, or irony eludes you totally, then I would have to conclude you're illiterate. It doesn't matter whether you can sound out words or recognize letters correctly. If you're deaf to verbal screwing off, you're illiterate. You're like the people who read passages in the Bible ("In vain shalt thou use any medicines/Thou shalt take no balm in Gilead" blah blah) & interpret them literally: "D'uh, I'd better not take my sick boy to the doctor! God told me it won't do no good to get medicine!" You're probably blind to metaphor, metonymy, context & most other aspects that make language language. I'm willing to work with you on reading & interpretation skills if you want. Just lemme know.

Well flail is to thrash or throw your arms/fingers about and frail isn't technically a word for this, or a word to describe his technique. So I vote for frail anyway because his style is unique and he should have his own word for it too. :)

Frail and flail can be combined under given circumstances such as "I'm So Afraid" and "Come". This could be interpreted as flrail. :wavey:

I think Gerald's point was that you've only been compelled to post in this forum eight times and three of those times it's been purely to criticise another person. Why come out of lurking just to attack someone? Just don't read their posts if they offend you so much.

Also it could be said that many people find the stoned ramblings of a few just as tedious, if not more so, than the supposedly pseudo-intellectual discussion going on here.

Dictionary.com totally failed me on this one.
However, flail is funnier, so i still stand by my choice.
It *is* funnier, and see, the blog author looks at both:
But judging by the number of hits, "frailing" is the standard term. Hence, the question arises: Whence "flailing"? Is it an eggcorn (nascent folk etymology)? Since "to frail" is not used outside the world of banjo-playing, it might attract a folk etymology, especially since "to flail" meaning "to beat" well describes the action: someone who is frailing the banjo appears from the audience to be just beating or striking the resonator.

And yet apparently there is also some evidence that "frail" is just a dialectal form for "flail." In which case "flailing" is not a folk hyper-correction, but just an adjustment of the lexeme towards the standard dialect. But I can't answer the question definitively: Is the current use of "flailing" an eggcorn which in fact inadvertently restores the original etymon? Or is it a survival that has always been used alongside the dialectal "frailing"? — in which case it is not an eggcorn at all. I don't have the time or resources to solve this question, but maybe a reader has some specialized knowledge?

I see what you mean. Lindsey is obsessed with the creative process and so wears the garb of the agriculturalist to this extent. However, as you indicate, he doesn't always come through, 'cause he gets too obsessed with the process, with getting it perfect etc. His best moments are probably those when he is able to just spread his seed willy-nilly, as it were, without too much planning, plotting. That is, his stuff is a little precious. (But I love it. Lindsey is God, etc.)

He's what psychologists call a mismatcher; has to be different from everyone around him. Hence Stevie's "You're not like other people etc." This can be self-defeating or shoot-yourself-in-the-footing. Witness, in Destiny Rules, how he takes a financial loss in order to have a long album. He was stubborn and probably wrong, although I wouldn't cut out any of his songs (personally).

Did you ever read the old Musician article, "Lindsey Buckingham: Lonely Guy." It shows his struggle with fame and adulation. He clearly needs it and thrives on it, but is afraid of being a "lounge act." Even in his personal life, it seems he drives love away or can't stand success. But, yes, public adulation, as in the Fleetwood Mac context, IS the best application of his superb talents.

I admire his stubornness and perfectionism whether it's wrong or right. I mean, he made a choice about the album that showed he didn't care about money, in spite of having a young family. Can't help but admire. He wants integrity at all costs, and the cost can be high.

Public adulation of his application of facility in a given environment is in my opinion his most thrilling application of natural endowment. This is the domain he needs to fulfill his unmentioned desires and in turn results in the approbation the said individual ultimately requires."

Carne? Are you back?

Sorry Forshorn, but your excellent post reminds me of an ex-ledgie. By the way, as a nonnative speaker, I couldn't make a lot of the original post you responded to. But your response has alot that I agree on and it helped me to understand the source-post:eek: .

Great to have a new ledgie that pays respect to Lindsey as a musician on it's meritis: Judging the total package as he is, and not by isolating some elements that CAN be irritating. Forshorn rules.

Lindsey is A musical god. Not my personal musical god however G.

He has a unique style and sound which makes him identifiable in a world of imitations and this gives him the right to be labelled a "musical god" I guess..

If somebody (oh, let's say Lindsey Buckingham for example) spends all their time in a recording studio but never releases anything publicly, can they still be called a "musician"?

Good point. AND - although I really like him, can one who plays the same solo in every concert and only a variation thereof in several songs be called such as well.

Then again, even at his worst, he is still better than 99?% out there IMO.

Of course you ridicule everything. The amount of music coming out is devastatingly poor. But the last two and a half years he did put out work. An almost doublealbum, a live dvd/cd and a soundstage dvd. With alot of old stuff but also new gems. And he toured for 1.5 years. I thought a stageperformer on instruments is called a Musician. Even if he doesn't release a lot of recordings. Sounds familiar?:p

In a word yes.

If you have your heart in your work, but produce nothing to the outside world you are still a musician, it never goes away. It's what you ARE not what you produce. Now being regarded as an "act" or a "commercial artist" relies on the production and distribution of what you achieve AS a musician.

In which case you are forgiven and I agree.. Profession being that you do it for a living so you have to release it... Lindsey must be financially comfortable I guess.

What is needed is Kristen to hit the stores and melt his credit cards and then he will be forced to release something... Or do a Rumours gravytrain tour...

Sweet moses that would be heaven. Maybe not 5 hours of just Here Comes the Sun, I could do with 2 to 3 hours. Then he'd have to go into Green Manalishi! How ChiliD would love this evening!

Yes I can see the headline now "Man goes beserk at Buckingham gig"

There was chaos today when Fleetwood Mac guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham performed in front of a small crowd at a Long Beach Starbucks.
Instead of performing hit songs Like "Go Your Own Way" and "Trouble" Buckingham decided to play a selection of covers. Little did Buckingham, 56, realise however that he would have trouble of his own. The Fleetwood Mac frontman started off with a cover of the Beatles classic "Here Comes The Sun". This song was given a reasonable reception from a few, hardcore fans. One member of the crowd however seemed to give off cries of agony and discomfort. Buckingham then continued the set with a fingerpicked, angst riddled version of the Peter Green song "The Green Manalishi". It was at this point the same member of the audience proceeded to pick up a guitar, believed to be a "Turner Model One" and tried to insert it into the performing artist. The assailant later admitted he was trying to relax the artists "anal tendencies". Long Beach police have confirmed they are holding a male caucasian, 50, for further questioning.

A more accurate report:

The sometime Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was hospitalized this evening with 3rd degree burns over his head, neck & shoulders after an angry mob of Starbucks patrons doused the anal retentive, angst-ridden guitarist with piping hot coffee drinks mid performance of George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun", a version similar to that of which he performed on Peter Jennings' 1999 New Year's Eve television show on ABC.

One of the 15 patrons arrested was quoted as saying..."Look, I was just opening the door of the shop to walk in when the melee' started. After I heard what prompted it, I surely wouldn't have been a by-stander; but, I really had nothing to do with this." Long Beach Police declined comment due to their policy of not commenting on on-going investigations.
