I love love love this song, but I have been wondering lately why this has been performed steadily in most of stevie's solo tours.

What on earth from the millions of songs Stevie has made this one be performed so many times?? I mean, it wasn't even a single... Does it hold a special meaning for her?? I can understand why songs like "Dreams", "Rhiannon" & "Stand Back" are performed on most tours, but why this song is always performed as got me baffled

Just curious... :wavey:

I think she's stated that the song is a continuation of "Dreams" or vice versa so that's why she performs them back to back.

I had heard that before. Can anybody hook me up with a great live performance of this song? 1998 and up and of good quality - preferably with dreams as well

I was wondering that myself recently, thanks for asking. But while you love it, I was thinking "this song ain't so great" (I don't really think "ain't" in my head, but it sounds better here).
I saw that it flowed well with dreams, but I didn't think that could be the only reason.
Since I've said all that, I'll just go ahead and say this would probably be my choice number one for songs to drop. Not that I don't like it, but besides those kick ass parts where she gets all passionate, I could do without its midtempo, midrange thing.

I did feel the same way until I actually SAW Stevie perform it. Now I absolutley adore the song. My favourite song on BD. I don't think it should get dropped - its a great opener how it merges in with dreams.

Bottom Line: The Song Kicks Ass

That's really your favorite song on BD???!?

Lawd. I think I liked it less from the performances. But it does merge with dreams really well, and I've seen Stevelah much more than you have (I think).
Honestly, i would love it if she dropped both songs. She could replace them with
"Long Way to Go" and "Kind of Woman" for example....:D
I do like OTR - don't get me wrong - but mainly only a couple parts of the song. The couplet of OTR and Dreams really brings the exciting concert tempo down, IMO. which, again, does not mean they aren't good songs.

I'm glad someone is extra stoked about OTR, though.
Oh, my, when she did HSML in Vegas, I was in heaven. And i didn't like that song soooo much before. And now I love it.
Kind of the same thing with you and OTR. :woohoo:

At the moment it is my favourite song. Im known for changing my mind at the drop of a hat - SA was my favourite album at one stage

There are very few stevie songs I don't like. The only one i can think of at the moment is Whole Lotta Trouble :sorry:

But, I do think it is time for a change. I say replace 90% of the set list. I am dying to see 'Ohh My Love', 'Ghosts', 'Affairs of the Heart' & 'Straight Back' performed live, that would be heaven

I am obsessed about 'Ooh My Love' - it is my fav Stevie solo song (at the moment :p )

A) Don't laugh about Street Angel. I still like it better (as a whole) than TISL.
B) I agree with your plan, but not your songs. I like them, but I prefer the others, especially for a concert. Some of my favorite Stevie lyrics are in Ghost, though "It's just the ghost of what you really want
And it's the ghost of the past that you live in
And it's the ghost of the future you are frightened of"
Those lyrics really speak to me. I just don't think either would be good for a concert so much. Straight Back would kick ass, Affairs of the Heart - the song is okay, for a concert, no.

 I would hardly call anything of Stevie's emo. My Chemical Romance is emo...

Yes, lyrically i can really relate to Ghosts, because most of Stevie's songs are about love, something I have never felt, i cant relate, but that doesnt mean i enjoy them any less :woohoo:

I also relate to Escape from Berlin as well,

What can I say, im a depressing person

I don't think you're depressing, I'm just suprised you don't "relate" to more. I guess you're "doing the best that you can ;) "
Even if I haven't experienced whatever, I can still usually imagine the pain of it.
But I have to say, I think Ghosts is pretty relatable, although musically not my favorite, mainly because its slow - the notes are ok.
I don't care about lyrics that much. And I really like fast beat songs for concerts. Which Ghost isn't. :) My other favorite thing is a supervocal.

It's cool, your tastes are interesting. :wavey:

Oh, and I would say that almost every single Stevie song is technically emo.
Exceptions include: Uh....Nope. The closest I can come is Angel and Think About It. But technically those are emo, too. Chris is the one for upbeat songs.

It usually opens every set list. She has called it the sequel to DREAMS. I love it..it is very heavy with Stevie DRAMA....

I'm pretty obsessed with Outside the Rain too. It's just such a great song. I'm not so fond of Dreams, I'm afraid, and I'd have a hard time choosing between Enchanted and Outside the Rain as an opener...

OTR is one of the best songs on Bella Donna, for sure, which I actually find to be a fairly uninteresting album. *ducks behind the chair*

Stevie has said in interviews that Outside the Rain is the song Fleetwood Mac would have done at that time had she been working on a band album. I think she sees this song as the "link in the chain" between her new solo career with Bella Donna and her career with Fleetwood Mac up until that point. I also remember her saying the song was a continuation of Dreams, but why she performs them the other way around (OTR/Dreams) I don't know. Plus Tom Petty produced it so I'm sure that makes it special to her too.

Waddy has been trying to get her to drop OTR from the set for years. But did get her to do Rock and Roll (Go Waddy!)

It's a kickass song that's even better live than on BD, and it flows into Dreams, annnnd it's a kickass opener. If you don't believe me, just listen or watch OTR from Red Rocks '86. The drums and the opening chord come in, and it's pretty much amazing. I get chills almost every time I hear it.

I don't have any good versions of this song from '98 or later, heh, but I would wholeheartedly recommend the RR version or even House of Blues from '94 for those that aren't impressed.

Plus Tom Petty produced it so I'm sure that makes it special to her too. It's a continuation in the sense that it was written after Dreams & is a snapshot of Stevie's emotional life a few years after Dreams. So in that sense it's a continuation. (It's also written in the same key with similar chord progressions that allow for musical as well as thematic conjoining.)

But that isn't relevant to the order they're performed in for the medley. That's strictly a musical reasoning behind that order: Outside the Rain is the obvious one to open with because it has a more dramatic introduction & it is generally has more dramatic moments in it--more buildups, more climaxes. Whereas Dreams is the logical musical choice to end the medley because 1) it actually has an ending, not a fade & 2) it's the denoument of the presentation, the resolution, the solution of the problem.

You couldn't really medley INTO Outside the Rain--it would sound weird because you can't medley into crashing chords that have an introductory feel to them.

Similar reasoning was behind In the Back of My Mind segueing into The Chain. You would be less likely to make musical, aural sense of it the other way round.

It's like sonata form: there's a linearity to the progression----exposition of the theme or themes, development of these themes, recapitulation of these themes, & finally coda & resolution.

This is part of what musical directors do. They make decisions like these.

but nothing tops 94 & 86 NOTHING![/url]Too much crowing about Red Rocks all the time. If you spend some time -- say, the next fifteen days -- listening carefully to all fifty of the taped 1986 concerts, you will come to understand that Red Rocks was an average performance of Outside the Rain (good, but average).

It is easily bested by several other 1986 performances, including Madison Square Garden (August 5), Landover (August 2), Los Angeles (July 18), Jones Beach (June 8) & Holmdel (June 3).

Please, everyone, hunt those down (& any others) & expand your consciousness beyond the rather ordinary Red Rocks performance. If you wind up still liking Red Rocks the best after hearing the other fifty, that's okay. At least you will have given the other shows on the tour a chance.

sometimes I think we just nominate a certain performance as the best only because we have it on video or because it was released commercially. In the same way, everybody crows about the joys of "The Chain" on the Mirage concert video, when it was a good but sort of ordinary "Chain" up against Irvine Meadows (Oct. 18), the Meadowlands (Sept. 14), Detroit (Sept. 19) & Cedar Rapids (Oct. 25).

Well, of course we do. When we nominate these songs we nominate them as 'the best of what we've heard'. Not everyone is able to hear all fifty RAL shows! If we find a better version in our own collection, we put it up and let people decide for themselves.

Waddy has been trying to get her to drop OTR from the set for years. But did get her to do Rock and Roll (Go Waddy!)

Oh, Waddy. I just love him for trying to get her to change something. Didn't I hear that he tried to get her to open with either Bella Donna or TISL for the '01 tour? That? Would have killed.

I really do think it's her way of connecting her solo work with Mac for he live shows. I personally love it live. It's a good rock tune while still being slow, deep & sexy. Love it. Someone must have complained, or maybe it didn't feel right for her since although she dropped it partway through the TISL tour, it has since returned.

Would I be really upset if it were dropped? Not if it were dropped for another upbeat tune like Angel or TTM or No Spoken Word or If You Ever Did Believe. But if it were dropped for After the Glitter Fades or L&L or something like that, then yes, I'd be pissed.

I'm going through what I have on my hard drive, and to be honest, I really like all versions. Not a huge fan of how slow it was done in '81, I really like '83 & '86, then it's kind of so-so until '94 when she kicked the **** out of it! Current versions are good, but I hate when she doesn't go for it. And you know what I mean. I guess the '94 tour is my preference. I'll upload a version from most tours on yousendit as time (and computer cooperation) allow.

But if you break it down musically (in terms of what was actually arranged), it wasn't a really smooth transition. Back of Mind just sort of ground to a halt & then Mick started the Chain kick drum. I mean, with that sort of thing, you can medlify any two songs!

Yes, many of us do trade David. But there have been many times that you've mentioned a show here that most of us had no clue was in circulation in the fan community, so we obviously don't have everything. Maybe because it's older material, originally on cassette that long time fans have had for years but newer fans still haven't gotten access to?

OK, here we go.

But there have been many times that you've mentioned a show here that most of us had no clue was in circulation in the fan community, so we obviously don't have everything. Maybe because it's older material, originally on cassette that long time fans have had for years but newer fans still haven't gotten access to?

OK, here we go.

Too much crowing about Red Rocks all the time. If you spend some time -- say, the next fifteen days -- listening carefully to all fifty of the taped 1986 concerts, you will come to understand that Red Rocks was an average performance of Outside the Rain (good, but average).

I have those 50 or so shows, and the touched up Red Rocks version is still my favorite of all time. So, ha! :)

i said the RAL versions
i just happened to single out RR coz most people have access to it

So, if this a continuation of "Dreams", I guess we can presume that it's a continuation of her emotional bout with Lindsey and the fallout of feelings she had to deal with a few years after their breakup and the advent of her fame?

My 2 cents on OTR - it sucks and should have been dropped a long time ago or maybe never have been performed live at all. Waddy was right when he tried to convince her to drop it, too bad it didn't work. I will celebrate the day I go to a Stevie show and don't have to hear that song. The only part I like is when it's fading into Dreams and she sings "Love is a word that some entertain, if you find it you have won the game" 1)because it's a great line and 2)because the song is ending and I love the music to the fade in part. It was never a hit and I've never heard it being a fan favorite so why is it still there? Because she feels safe and comfortable performing it and possibly has some huge emotional connection to it and can't let go?

Dreams should and will most likely always remain in the set list. Any casual fan that goes to a Stevie/FM concert EXPECTS to hear that song and would most likely leave disapointed and wanting their $$ back if it wasn't played so we die-hards just have to accept it. It's one of her signature songs if not her #1 signature song and will therefore remain a staple.

I agree with that. It would be like going to a Stones concert and not getting Satisfaction and that's why it was played at their Super Bowl show. Edge of 17 is also a Stevie standard.

Yabbut Stevie tours just about every year. I doubt there'd be a problem if she didn't do one standard this year or one standard that year. This idea that thousands of people would walk out of a concert is . . . I've never witnessed such a thing.

Plus, some of the songs that we always considered standards -- like Rhiannon -- all of a sudden weren't played (like in 1987 with Fleetwood Mac or 1989 solo). It was a little weird at first, but everybody just adapted to it. Nobody had a hysteria fit meltdown Janie Got A Gun thing going on ... you just waited until the next tour (1990 Fleetwood Mac & 1991 solo) & Rhiannon was back in!

I guess if you tour once every decade, you'd better play your big hit "Dreams." But if you're out on the road in one form or another virtually every year, you can give "Dreams" a break without the empire crumbling.

In fact, given the fact that Stevie's on the road almost every year, she could do literally anything she wanted to do with her set. Fan pressure to play something one year would be offset by lack of pressure to do it the next year, & so on. After 1997, "Silver Springs" was a staple, a standard. But Fleetwood Mac dropped it in what? 2004? No big deal. The tour still made money. Fans still came. Audiences came. People showed up. Some people probably noticed it & missed it, but in the long run who really cared? You just figure you'll hear it the next time. So that's why I'm saying that Stevie could do anything she wants with her set. The fact that she keeps her core songs in is therefore indicative that she wants to keep them in.

The situation's a littl different with Europe & overseas, where Stevie does not tour every year. I guess those guys want to hear "Dreams" because they haven't had Stevie on their shores in ten years.

Also, I think by this point just about everyone in the United States who wanted to see Stevie Nicks has seen Stevie Nicks. If you live here & you haven't seen her yet, it's probably more your fault than hers. You just have to get your ass to a concert. Your window of opportunity is enormous.

It would be like going to a Stones concert and not getting Satisfaction and that's why it was played at their Super Bowl show.I wouldn't care. Would you really care? I mean, you might notice, "Hey they didn't play Satisfaction," but other than that, if the concert was filled with great Stones material, would it really bother you? I don't think it would bother the majority of people at the Stones show.

Now if the Stones did a whole concert of B sides or esoteric album tracks so that half the audience didn't recognize anything, then they might think the concert sucked.

but of course that's never the case with either the Stones or Stevie Nicks. it never comes anywhere near that.

But here's the thing - there are some fans who will go to see FM for the first time (or haven't seen them in years) and may never go again. They'll go as a novelty because they've been a casual fan over the years or have recently gotten into their music. If that's the case it's not an option for them to "just wait until the next tour", especially when ticket prices can be in excess of $100. It is those people who will be disappointed not to hear Dreams. Like the people in Vegas for example that may have been in Vegas and just happened to hear about Stevie performing so they bought tickets. Those people will want to hear Dreams and there are still some of us die hards who would be disappointed not to hear it even if we've heard it a thousand times.

I personally don't think there is a better opener than Outside the Rain. Even though it is way too toned down now, those opening chords are such a rush (as someone else mentioned). Plus, I don't believe that an opening song should be a hit, or if it is, not a major hit. To me, an opener shouldn't be too slow or too fast, and it should kind of set the tone for the concert. In my opinion, there is a large amount of "Stevieness" in Outside the Rain, if anyone understands what I mean. I think it sets the best tone for Stevie's solo concerts. The same goes for The Chain. Even though I would personally like to see The Chain come in as an encore, I don't think there's another song I would like better for the opener (even though Second Hand News and Say You Love Me traditionally were the openers...I didn't like them as such). The Chain sets the sort of melodramatic mood for a Fleetwood Mac concert.

You see, I even disagree with that. Of all her songs she does now that shes done forever I think its one of the least toned down. The Gold Dust/ 2 Voices werent THAT much different then the great Street Angel/RAL versions. So unlike Rhiannon, Stop Dragging My Heart Around and others I dont think Outside the Rain is toned down much these days at all.

I am 25 and yes, in "that" group of stevie fans who yes, loved her growing up in the 80's, and owned, rumors, ral, FM's greatest hits, BTM,Timespace, andSA. But Did not become OBSESSED  untill the reunion in 97. Words can not express how much I love this song. I allways feel that same feeling that I felt when I heard it for the first time in 98. I am allways SO TERRIBLY jealous of those of you who have the "been there, done that since 81 and am board with it mentality. Tom petty and mike cambell worked on this with her. They aren't as good as the '81 tour by any means, but I don't think they're bad. Her vocal was great. Did she do the "tambo dance" and "booty shakedown" that everyone remembers from the In Concert video? No, of course not.

I meant toned down just as far as her not doing the high parts at the end of the verses (except the last). She doesn't even just sing them as they were on Bella Donna, she goes really low on them. But definitely, compared to Rhiannon and SDMHA, it is one of the least toned down. Rhiannon I can still get into, but SDMHA dropped as low as it is just doesn't work too well for me.

Now there's a Stevie-ism..."I never did not love you"... bad grammar, but I guess it is the poet that she is...

Actually, this IS good grammar. She uses the double negative on purpose. She's really saying "I always did love you," but put that against the music and it doesn't flow as well, or IMO have the same impact, as "I never did not love you."
