View Full Version : How did you come up with your Screen Name for the Ledge?

DavidMn

I thought it would be interesting to find out how you all picked your screen names for the Ledge. Of course mine is mainly my first name, but since there was already a David here, I decided on the Mn at the and because 1. the initial of my last name is M, Marx, and 2. Mn is the abbreviation for the state I'm proud to call home, Minnesota.:)

I used just WelshWitch for a lot of my screen names when I had WebTV. When I got a computer the screen name WW was already taken so I just added my initials on to the end to sort of personalize it. I use that screen name for just about everything except for MySpace.

Interesting thread...

Mine comes from the name of a sort-of-inspired-by-Stevie-and-Lindsey short story that I wrote in March of last year, a few weeks before I joined the Ledge.

I just used my former main email name "estranged4life" (I still have it, but f**kin SPAM eats that acct on a daily basis) and thought I would use it here to annoy everyone with trying to determine what it's true meaning actually is.

The real meaning...Is that there is no meaning!!! I just wanted the word "estranged" as my email addy since the GNR song of the same name, has been one of my favorite songs of all time...But, of course, "estranged" taken. Deb decided to add the "4life" as a joke and my system accepted it...So.....

If I could have any screen names now, I think I would use either Brian_Trades (Which is my screen name at metalsludge.tv) or Hellboy

Miss Vicky
03-11-2006, 05:07 PM
I've probably explained this before, but...

It's an inside joke between myself and friend/former manager of mine. I work as a veterinary receptionist and have off and on for the last five years. Apparently my telephone voice is much different than my regular speaking voice. According to my former manager, (and according to some other people as well, including some of the practice's clients I've spoken to) I sound like a phone sex operator. She informed me of this one day and insisted that I should take it up as a second job and go by the handle "Miss Vicky." To this day, whenever she calls me, she wants to know how much it is per minute.

So when I went to choose my screen name it was the first thing that came to mind. I also use it on all of the other boards that I've joined.

The one I had at the BuckinghamNicks forum is/was downcomesthenight. I had that line from The Chain stuck in my head at the time, and I love the way Stevie sings it live: "down comes the nii-yiiiiiight". When I signed up here, I wanted a name that combined my love for both Stevie and Chris, so... goldustsongbird was born. GDW & Songbird represent to me, respectively, what each of them is all about - sort of like their signature songs. That's basically the one I use now when I join Mac related forums, or sign up for stuff.

Well, I joined The Ledge around the time SYW came out and I loved Illume (like a diamond snake in a black sky). Now, years later, I like Destiny Rules, which uses the same phrase, better. Go figure! Anyways, I really like my screen name, but it makes me sound kind of mean. Like I'm a snake in the grass! Something about snakes makes me sound like a jerk. But I still like my screen name. And, whenever Stevie says "Diamond Snake" in one of her songs, I get really happy! As if she is talking to me!

" I was born in the desert, .......so I know how it feels there....." (sorry, I know how much everyone HATES desert angel:laugh: I just like that line.) When I left Phoenix Arizona to go and live in Australia for a few years Phoenix was all I could talk about, and people even started calling me that by name. Of course now that I am back here, All I can do is Talk about Australia!! Also, I have allways been inspired buy the Mythical bird that rises from the ashes and sings its beautiful song that gave my city it's namesake.. I find it a comforting and motivating symbol it helps remind me to "rise" in times of adversity.. I also LOVE that Stevie loves Phoenix as well, and calls it her place of inspiration and healing. That is also how I see the desert. It is hot, yes, but the sunsets are beautiful.........

03-11-2006, 08:52 PM
I wanted something Stevie-esque and I didn't want to be sister of the moon 52 or rhiannon 81. I wanted something that no one else really had. I sort of have golden colored hair and I had my hair in a braid at the time so golden braid seemed to fit for me. "Golden braid" seemed to flow more to me than "gold and braid."

Villavic
03-11-2006, 10:29 PM
Does anybody remember the 8.3 character limit from old computers??

well my name is Carlos Villavicencio and I've been working with computers for 20 years, I guess.

I used to work with mainframes, they had a limit of 8 characters for naming files and programs. Even PCs with DOS had 8 character limit for file names and 3 characters for file types (like autoexec.bat) (8.3 format they called it)

Well I used to put my name in programs I created, but the field had 8 character limit so I couldn't write VILLAVICENCIO, I always wrote VILLAVIC

so everybody at work started to call me Carlos Villavic or just Villavic !

And that's the story

ragandbone
03-12-2006, 02:54 AM
Well, clearly it doesn't have anythign really to do with FM, it is just a name I have used for a while.

My ex and I formed a puppet company when we were busy creating a puppet production for a festival. The name refers to what were sort of junk collectors in England, who used to walk the streets with horse carts calling out for "rags and bones" which meant any old thing you didn't want any more. Then these things were re-used or sold. Our puppets were largely composed of materials we scavenged from junk yards, thrift stores, and neighborhood put-out days, so they were literally out of scraps. We found out later that there is another, older puppet company with that same name.

I kept using the name for email, and forums, because it fits my personality, even without the puppets. I like to dig through card catalogues (well, I did) browse the shelves of libraries, dig around the internet, and I eavsdrop a bit too. I think writers are sort of rag and bone collectors as well.

There, what a long answer! I hope I don't kill this thread - I seem to do that a lot!

Peestie
03-12-2006, 07:14 AM
I had a Latin teacher before I dropped it a few years ago who was a real character. He would always give his pupils nicknames because he was a little eccentric.

Mine was Peestie because it combines the start of my first name and start of my sir name... sorta... I you just took the first few letters of my names it would be "Pest" if you took the first 2 or "Petsti" if you took the first 3 (Peter Stitt). Peestie just looked so much better written down and was how it was pronounced.

To start out with people called me it mockingly (they were jealous their nicknames weren't as cool ;) ) but I liked it so I didn't mind. Now it has stuck and for the last 6 or 7 years just about no-one calls me by real name. Even my other teachers call me Peestie now and even my parents on occasion.

bretonbanquet
03-12-2006, 10:39 AM
Breton Banquet is the name of my horse - he's an ex-racehorse hence the ridiculous name... his parents were called Brittany and Nosh, and a common method of naming them is to link it in with the parents names. So, 28 years ago, Breton Banquet was born, and more recently I figured it was a good name for me too

TheBlueLamp
03-12-2006, 11:14 AM
When I joined my favourite two songs were Blue Lamp and Battle Of The Dragon, and since I couldnt figure out how to shorten Battle, so I went for Blue Lamp. I added "The" because there was already a bluelamp and also to sorta pay tribute to THE blue lamp Stevie had and wrote about. After a while I sorta looked at the name and laughed at it...Trust me to name myself after an inanimate object

Really, I just wanted a penguin-related name and I've always liked the cartoon.

wondergirl9847
03-12-2006, 11:56 AM
"the being known as wondergirl is speaking, I believe..." is a line from my favorite Monkees song, Randy Scouse Git. I wasn't an FM fan yet when I chose my screenname and email. I was trying to use something from my fave songs and thought wondergirl was pretty cool. Someone else was using wondergirl around the net, so I added the 9847 which is from another Monkees song P.O. Box 9847.

Wah-la.

I may have answered this before as well as "Miss Vickey" said...
here is my story.

I love the moon!
I could stare at it for hours and hours out my window or from my deck...
I am always facinated by it ! and have been since I was a little girl-
Musically, I loved "Sisters of the Moon when it came out (I could relate of course) plus there is also a Sting tune called "Sister Moon" that I love :)
But since I also love "Storms" and the line of ~~always be a storm~~,
And since I believe that I have such a fractured personality/and intelligence...
Nothing about me is total (like a full moon), so,

I refer to myself as~~ eclipse~~
It is only part of the moon and appears when you don't expect it...like me

I also use it to identify myself as well on any other board or chat or whatever- so if you see a post from ~~eclipse~~ somewhere-It's me.

Now, the origins of Smacdoug are a lot clearer. It was a screen name assigned to me when I was going to Sinclair Community College (my FIRST screen name), and I decided to use it for my AOL account. In fact, I'm STILL Smacdoug on Yahoo!

Dark Angel
03-13-2006, 10:27 PM
I've been going by Dark Angel since early '96, before I had internet access. At the time I was on a lot of computer BBS's (Bulletin Board Systems), usually went by SorcereressRhiannon on them. In Marh of '96 I made a comment on a board, and got in a fight with the guy who would eventually become me husband. The fight/arguement kept going on, and the SysOp wasn't real thrilled, so my future hubby suggested we take it to his board. I first signed in under my usual board name, then found out one of the guys I had been dating was on there too, and were no longer getting along. I emailed the SysOp of 'Darklands' (future hubby who was going by Dark Shadow at the time), told him I wanted to change my login, and I wanted something completely different and not Stevie-related, and so chose Dark Angel, which worked great when I became co-sysop of Darklands.
Only after I got online and found the Nickfix, did I find it was sort of Stevie-related (Insider).

My real name is Elpida, which means "Hope" in my language. When I started using the internet around 10 years ago, I was living in Norway and it was difficult for people to pronounce my real name, so I (or some german friend of mine) came up with Elie, which looks like some sort of abbreviation. Noone calls me that anymore, but I 've been using it on the internet for many many years.

@serrart: I am impressed- I would have never thought it..I like the movie too.

Are you sure it's not this:

LIVIA DRUSILLA, AUGUSTA: 58 BC - 29 AD

Like Augustus, Livia stands alone in the history of Rome and of Roman women. If he was the Pater Patriae (Father of his country), surely she qualified as its Mater Patriae. She was the first woman in Roman history to be actively and influentially involved, although artfully behind the scenes, in almost all major decisions of Augustus' extraordinary 45 years of absolute power. He trusted her to such an extent that he left his personal seal - the most powerful "signature" in the ancient world - to her to use use when he traveled abroad. She was the first woman deified in Roman history by the Emperor Claudius, her grandson. She was the mother of Emperor Tiberius, grandmother of Caligula and Claudius, great-grandmother of Nero. The fact that, thanks to Tacitus and Suetonius, unsavory rumors about her use and abuse of power have circulated for 1900 years only adds to her unique mystery.

Livia brought her own qualities of beauty, intelligence, discretion and tact to the goal of recreating a new Roman autocracy; her political instincts became invaluable to Augustus during the many crises of his long rule. At the very least, the early years of civil war, the reinvention of government following Actium, the constant deaths of adopted heirs, the struggles between Augustus and her son, Tiberius (who by most accounts he disliked), and the death in the army of her younger son, Drusus, provided sufficient materials for personal heartache. Through it all, Livia appeared serene. After Augustus' death, and by his will, she not only become a priestess in his newly-founded cult but a member of his family as Julia Augusta. The title Augusta would descend to later empresses. She was personified in her later years with attributes of matronly, fecund goddesses like Ceres and as the living image of feminine virtues including pietas.

Mac = Fleetwood Mac Man = I'm a guy. Pretty simple. I use Nickslive on all other boards - this is the only place for MacMan.

Thanks for clearing that up, I've always wondered!

A friend once called me Sooz Kyooz and I liked the way it sounded and when I typed it I liked the way it looked!

Paula- I love this...
I always thought with you and the "gay boys" there was ,you know, something like a secret handshake and your name had a larger meaning... though now to find out it is nicks-backwards...

'Brilliant!!
Rock on sweet sister of the boob!
haha and congrats on a clever name!

This is a fun thread, I have seriously actually spent time wondering, and working out what "skin" could possibly mean! Man, I AM really dense.

@sckin: seriously, until you explained it, I thought it had something to do with skin...

Yeah, a lot of people think it's literally skin - that or sort of pervy thing. I was debating on doing Nicks and Mac, but it came out Skcin Cam. Now that's pervy.

Hmm, but you are not claiming to be above that level of perviness, are you?

Wow, talk about serendipitously lovely - accidently getting an Insider name.
I was like "It's so cool at least one person has an "Insider" name". But no. :p

Oh, and my name is Amber. Coincidentally, so is Stevie's dawtah born a gemini. *worst song ever*

That's right! I went to SteveMacD because I got tired of people calling me Doug, as they figured S=Stevie, Mac=Fleetwood Mac, and Doug=my name. This was back before we all had signatures.

Now, the origins of Smacdoug are a lot clearer. It was a screen name assigned to me when I was going to Sinclair Community College (my FIRST screen name), and I decided to use it for my AOL account. In fact, I'm STILL Smacdoug on Yahoo!God there were some NASTY flames in that room! I remember one in particular where this guy came in and started talking smack about how Grand Funk Railroad was god and Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac couldnt carry the ballsweat on their jocks or something like that. I dont suppose you remember that do you?

All I have to say is THANK GOD I am not the only one who never noticed Skcin was Nicks backwards .

My name - well it's actually more than just 2 of my favorite Stevie songs together (Bombay Sapphires and Sisters of the Moon, duh). When I signed up for The Ledge I never intended to become an active member of the forum, I was just looking for someone who had a Vegas DVD to trade but obviously I decided to stick around. I honestly gave no thought to my name but in retrospect I've fallen in love with it and it's very me.

As I said it's not only 2 of my favorite songs together but sapphire is my birthstone and one of my most precious possessions is a sapphire and gold pinky ring my grandmother gave me when I was about 7. I also love the word "sister" and often call my close friends sisters as well as women I admire.
