It's totally disgraceful and pathetic. It's always a case that when nature produces something man comes along and f**ks it all up. Seal cubs are very cute things and naturally we are horrified. In fact I'm a peaceful guy but if I saw someone on the ice taking a club or a pick to a seal I would have no compunction about doing the same thing to them. It's one of the few reasons I would take a life.

But it's as bad with so many things. I get pissed off when sharks have their fins cut off alive then get dropped back in the sea to drown so that humans can eat soup. I think it's awful when sharks get bad publicity because some of them are seen as human killers. They are in decline and are a threatened species but they are not publicised enough. I get pissed when whales get harpooned. When rainforests are cut down for palm oil production so the west can have cheap food. When countries refuse to cut their carbon emissions etc etc etc. It goes on and on. We are all to blame by accepting society as it is. It won't change until it's too late and sometimes I think this planet has gone past the point of no return anyway. We've killed off so many species for our own pleasures as a race that food chains and whole ecosystems will never return. I'm gonna stop typing now 'cos its depressing and angering me. :( :mad:

Nature is very resilient. If man would really back off it would come back. The US should be first to do this since our country is the one using the most resources. We seem to finally be heading in the right direction giving tax credits for hybrid vehicles and such. When the whole SUV craze came about I was incredulous because I know oil is a finite resource. Yet many were willing to carry on as though there were an endless supply. :confused: Now car companies are suffering because no one is buying them anymore. These are the same companies that cut short plans for more eco-friendly cars. Ford pulled an electric truck from its beta phase and everyone who owned one was asked to return it to be destroyed. :eek: That's insane and disgusting. Now they are paying the price.

When are companies going to begin to have a long term focus? Shareholders have to be more realistic in the returns they can expect. I guess there would be growing pains to making any changes to the short term gains that companies are so focused on.

This story made me cry too, Amber. Its so awful. I couldn't read it either, I read a few sentences and it was too much for me.

Thanks guys. As a Canadian, I am not only appalled by this inhuman, barbaric and unnecessary slaughter, but I am embarrassed. It's Canada's dirty little secret. It puts a permanent blood stain on this great country and it's a shame! How could any human being with half a conscience look into those little babies dark eye's and then club them over the head? The worst part is, the mother is witnessing the whole thing and you can hear her cries of desperation and helplessness.

however - one point should be made here about the canadian seal hunt: those soft, sweet, white coated baby seals, like the one pictured above, have not been hunted since 1987. the canadian government banned the hunt of the white coats after a huge uproar about the horrible clubbing practices.

It just doesn;t help the cause with these big celebs..when they are not informed better..

but did you read the actual facts about the hunt? i fear it does more harm to bombard the canadian government with emails and petitions that aren't based in fact. the fact is: petitions and anger and protests have already stopped the hunt of the white coats. back in 1987. so it is a waste of time to be sending these petitions. read the facts and adjust your petitions and arguments in accordance. i think you'll have more of an impact that way.

thanks, jill. that whole photo op thing with mccartney was disgusting. they spewed so much fallacy in the time they were here. it's so frustrating because i do not support the hunt - yet i can't stand when people make statements and arguments against it without having a full understanding of it. get the facts - then form your opinions.

The petition doesn't mention the "white coats", it's talking about seals on the ice of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the hunt that goes on every year.
So, either the seals off Newfoundland and Labrador are not white coats, and are still hunted every year - or -
the seals off Newfoundland and Labrador are white coats, as you imply, and so the hunt of them has been stopped, like you say, and this entire petition is some kind of giant lie - which would be a waste of time.

So which is it? Are these white coats and they're not being killed at all off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, or are they not speaking of white coats, but about some seal that is hunted yearly at the end of March off Newfoundland and Labrador? :confused:
And also, they have commentary from the "grim opening of the 2005 hunt" - how did they get that if there was no 2005 hunt? I'm confused.

The Canadian seal hunt, the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet, targets baby seals as young as 12 days of age. A recent veterinary study showed that many of the seals were skinned while still alive and able to feel pain. This hunt must be stopped.

More and more, the citizens of the world are showing their opposition to the seal hunt, as the growing success of the Canadian seafood boycott and the recent bans on seal products in Greenland and Italy show. I urge you to make a firm commitment to do everything in your power to end this barbaric and economically unnecessary hunt as soon as possible.

In 1987 they banned the hunt on the white coats, which only means they couldn't kill them until they shed their white coat. So, its the same seal but its coat has turned from white to grey, that's all. They claim they kill the pups anywhere from 25 days old to 3months old.

They now look like this when they club them.

That's what I thought, but this confused me: "Last year, 98.5% of the seals killed were two months of age or younger." - I didn't think they lost their white coats under 2 months of age. It's really stupid just to ban the white coats if they still kill tons that are under two months of age. How retarded and inadequate. :mad:

and that's exactly why i posted the information i did, too. it's not because i support the seal hunt - good god! i think it's brutal, inhumane, disgusting. i can't even watch the footage of it. i can't be near it. but i do not condone what the mccartneys did - they simply upped the level of misinformation out there. and that does not help the cause. the reason i posted the stuff about the white coats is because those cute little fuzzy babies are the ones most people believe are being slaughtered. and sadly, many people who condemn the hunt simply condemn it because they are cute. i am not for a second suggesting that that is what people here are doing - but it IS why many people do. i wanted to point out that those cute little fuzzy guys (who the mccartneys were posing with in their pathetic photo op) are already protected. it's the (according to some people) not so cute grey coated old pups who are being killed still as brutally and inhumanely - and who need the protection. i'm glad teresa posted the picture of the grey coat - they are vulnerable and being clubbed to death - and thuogh they may not be as fuzzy and cute as the white coats (i actually tihnk they ARE just as cute) they need protection, too.
