Yes there is rearrangment of a song and then there is butchery.

If I can draw a parallel, if it was a surgical operation Lindsey used a Heckler & Koch MP5 when he should have used a scalpel..

Please...PLEASE...buy Abbey Road or any Beatles compilation album that carries this song. It's a classic. Lindsey's version was very good, and I really like it - but its very different.

The original is a masterpiece and all, but Lindsey's version is 100% Lindsey. Take away the fact that it is a cover of a very beloved song, and you have a very typical Lindsey acoustic song. Comparing it to the original shouldn't be the only way to evaluate it. It is hard to distance yourself from a brilliant song that you have loved your entire life, but it is the only way!

lol i'm going to have to disagree with you on that, sorry. I think his vocals are spot on.

Is it just the live performance I linked to at the top of the thread the only Lindsey version of this song? Are is there another live recording knocking about somewhere, or even a studio verssion.

Naturally, being human and all, I like the beatles. I'm not a HUGE fan are even a novice fan lol, but I know a load of there songs.

hahaha I kept reading your posts wrong because you spell "or" as "are." His vocals are very much off, too low for the song, I think. And this was a one time performance.

George Harrison died that year, and they had him do it as tribute. Jennings threatend to cut him out of the show because his version wasn't loyal enough to the original. Turns out he was so mad at this that he threw his guitar at a wall in his hotel room, and it had to be repaired that night. In fact, on the video, theres a hole in his guitar. Look for it.

Yes, as I pointed out in another thread last month. It's not the guitar work thats the problem. Lindsey has tried to mould his style around the existing lyrics and it just doesn't work. Yes I think Lindsey's vocals were off too and this doesn't help but it's really a case of Travis picking being wrong for this song.

"Here Comes The Sun" was George's reaction and response to "Albatross" and it's almost as shocking and wrong as Lindsey going over that song in his Travis picking way (I can see ChiliD having a fit at the thought!). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for artists covering songs. Again as I mentioned before Harrison technically covered "Here Comes The Sun" because Joe Cocker released his version first and therefore you could argue his version is different from the "original" even though he wrote it..

Also, am I the only one who thinks George's "Here Comes The Moon" is a more beautiful song than "Here Comes The Sun"?

Yes, that problem that I have with his HCTS version are his vocals. They are a bit annoying but I don't think that his cover it is all that bad.

"Here Comes The Sun" was George's reaction and response to "Albatross"

Come again? Where'd you hear this? "Sun King" is clearly an homage to "Albatross," but "Here Comes The Sun"?

I'm already on record around here as being a fan of Lindsey's performance, but I'll throw those two cents in again. His vocal isn't always on-key on the performance, but I quite like his arrangement.

But then, I'm one of those who always finds it kind of silly when others describe a cover as sounding "wrong." I don't think there really is a wrong way to perform most pop songs. If Lindsey's reworking of "Here Comes The Sun" was unfaithful to the temperament and musicality of the original, it did a brilliant job of conveying the mood so prevalent that December after George died - and after the towers fell in New York - that we were all in for a long, cold, lonely winter.

His singing is operatic and the guitar playing symphonic.

Come again? Where'd you hear this? "Sun King" is clearly an homage to "Albatross," but "Here Comes The Sun"?

George was impressed by Albatross and thought it was a beautiful song. He felt inspired to write something in response and Here Comes The Sun was the song. It doesn't need to "sound" like Albatross to have been inspired by it. "Sun King" is indeed a homage but it is one by Lennon not Harrison.

George wrote Here Comes The Sun in Eric Clapton's garden when he should have been at Apple signing contracts. He couldn't be bothered by all the fuss and decided to sneak away for the day. Quote "The relief of not going to see those dopey accountants was wonderful"

George felt (and was quite right) that in England it seems like winter goes on forever and this informed the lyrics.

I'm not sure the emotions Lindsey conveyed were entirely correct in that context. I think it was too erratic in nature personally.

"Here Comes The Sun" was George's reaction and response to "Albatross"...

No, no, no....and no. George (and John) suggested that they "play something like Fleetwood Mac" when they hit an unproductive stretch during the recording of Abbey Road ("Albatross" being atop the UK charts at the time)...what resulted was "Sun King". (and if you can't hear "Albatross" in the intro to "Sun King", time to make that appointment with your ENT doctor)

Again as I mentioned before Harrison technically covered "Here Comes The Sun" because Joe Cocker released his version first

And, I will contend that there's absolutely no way a composer of a song can cover his own song...sure, somebody else may RELEASE their version of the song first, but the composer's version is NEVER a "cover". Another example, and again a George Harrison song..."Run So Far" was recorded & released by Eric Clapton in 1990...George Harrison's version wasn't released until after his death on his posthumous Brainwashed album. Nonetheless, Eric's version is the "cover"...George's is the original. Always was, always will be.

Other than "big-love-it" I don't see how he could have done it any other way without a band behid him. It's a very darring version but I love it all the same.

One thing's for sure, he couldn't have done it any worse.

I think ABC should've stuck with their original decision and told Lindsey to "shove it" instead of let him on the air with that pile o' stinky crap.

Okay, thanks, let me know if you find it! I also remember reading something somewhere that claimed "Here Comes The Sun" was a response to "Albatross," but I recall it being in one of those Fleetwood Mac books not exactly known for its accuracy (that narrows it down, doesn't it?), so I assumed it was a mistake on the author's part, getting his or her "Sun" songs mixed up.

I lust for Lindsey - ain't no doubt about that...but why does he always have to SCREAM his songs while strumming his guitar with enough friction and force to ignite the stage in flames? I guess he has so much pent up passion and antsy vibe that he needs to scream it all out. His version of Here Comes the Sun was fine - interesting - acceptable - but he Lindsey-ized it with his frenetic, neurotic tone. Linds....take it down a notch for George. You want to pay your respects to him...you don't want to wake him from the dead.

Or maybe that's what he was trying to do? That would have been nice. I miss George so much.:(

Is Madformac and ChilliD's only, maybe I should say MAIN, problem with the song that it was disrespectful and radically different to the original?

I must admit I do have an issue with George's songs in particular. I'm not partial to them being tampered with in the way other artists are. But that's not my reasoning here.

My reason is it doesn't work on a musical level. As I mentioned earlier Lindsey has tried to sculpt his current style around pre existing lyrics that don't fit with it. It sounds rushed in places, disjointed in others. I wouldn't like it even if I hadn't heard Harrisons original. It's not that I hate the style, I think Shut Us Down is a great song, Red Rover is ok too. But he's tried to force it with this one. Songwriting can take many forms and if you are doing a cover it can be hugely different to the original, but you have to come out with something that flows in some shape or form and I don't believe this does.

Now, if you took the song as an instrumental piece it would be fine, sort of like Never Going Back Again on acid. If Lindsey sung the lyrics acapella again fine. Put them together and its like putting a gun in Dick Cheney's hands, you know theres going to be a hell of a mess.

Funny stated, Justin, but after rewatching the video (AGAIN! ) I don't think Lindsey does a spectacular different thing in combining the guitararrangement with the "conflicting" vocal/melodylines as he does in RR or Shut Us Down. I do think your comparison of HCTS with those two songs is so much more spot on than to compare it with his solo-Big Love. That version does not have the contradicting guitar-vocalmelodies.
So I think you still hear Harrisons' vocalmelody and how it fits with the instrumental arrangement which logically leads to an Unbalanced feel inside the listener when he's confronted with Lindsey's version.
I don't think there's something wrong with disliking it, I say it's wrong to say that it is bad. At least it is typical him to deconstruct the original and rearrange it in his newfound approach. It is at least gutsy and original, daring and earpiercing. The fact that the boss of the programm thought he had to shove it, for me is almost a compliment.

"radically different", no...I don't have a problem with cover versions that are radically different to the original, as long as they're well thought out & executed.

"disrespectful", yes. Considering that George had just passed away 5 or 6 weeks earlier and being on national TV as a "tribute to George", it was just too radical & disrespectful FOR that moment. But, that's still not my MAIN problem with the song.

Lindsey just did a painfully ****ty job with the song. It was as if he had just come up with that arrangement about 10 minutes before he performed it and it just didn't work. You can't take "Big Love" (or "Red Rover"...or basically he just took one his OWN songs) and try to cram "Here Comes The Sun"'s lyrics into it. (which is how it sounded and how it came off) AND for being a supposed "tribute", the song came off WAY too angst ridden and angry...and the lyrical intent of the song is neither.

Lindsey just did a painfully ****ty job with the song. It was as if he had just come up with that arrangement about 10 minutes before he performed it and it just didn't work.
So you don't think it is extraordinarily complex? As all of his songs in 6/8 are, it has some major "brain teaser" parts, to quote John. Have you tried to play it??
In general, the I see this performance (especially now that I know so many people hate it) as Lindsey's last hurrah as a sort of rebel and non-conformist kind of guy. He chose to do something knowing that people probably wouldn't like it, given that he wasn't even going to be allowed to play it on tv. And what you see as disrespectful, I see as that Tusk mentalitly coming through one last time. Was it disrectful to Americas sensitive and unsuspecting ears to pummel them with songs like "The Ledge" back in 1979? Granted, he didn't do it at a funeral, but still!

I thought it was good. Not absolutly fantastic, but not bad by any stretch. I've never heard the original so I can't compare, but as a song in it's own right I didn't find anything wrong with that song.

Yeah, and that is EXACTLY the reason I think it is crap. It's "complex" for "complex"es sake. "Here Comes The Sun" is a simple song with a simple, hopeful message, not some big complex opus with some "tortured artist" angst.

It's a bull**** arrangement by a bull**** artist. Lindsey appears to be constantly caught up in this whole "tortured artist" persona...it all seems posing and insincere. He has been that way since 1979. Its one thing to be "the tortured artist" when you're in your late 20s/early 30's...but once you cross that 50 line, you'd think that you'd have your **** together. He obviously doesn't.

Wait a minute. What is so strange about that? Really? You've never heard that expression? A few lashing of a wet noodle is a sarcastic remark implying that you needn't be seriously punished...it's not a big deal. There is nothing odd or lascivious about the expression...many people know it...

...like many people know the original version of "Here Comes the Sun".

Oh wait...that's right. You don't know the original version of one of the most famous songs in the world.

haha, don't worry, boots, i knew what you were talking about!!

regarding the original topic... i admire lindsey as a guitarist - i think he's amazing. in fact, i wish i had just the guitar track from this performance. however, as a cover of hcts, this did not work for me. i am not a huge beatles fan, so i don't feel that lindsey's version is an abomination, but i think he missed the mark here. the beauty of hcts lies in its simplicity, and lindsey strayed from that. but, y'know, it's his prerogative and all that :)

"disrespectful", yes. Considering that George had just passed away 5 or 6 weeks earlier and being on national TV as a "tribute to George", it was just too radical & disrespectful FOR that moment. But, that's still not my MAIN problem with the song....

AND for being a supposed "tribute", the song came off WAY too angst ridden and angry...and the lyrical intent of the song is neither.

I'd go along with that.

Lindsey is quoted in the past as "addressing issues in terms of the time they took place". Well I think the timing of this "effort" was wrong in terms of what it was representing, in this case a tribute to George. The emotions Lindsey generated were all wrong for that moment, all full of angst and aggression. The complex picking and arpeggio style isn't a problem if done in the correct taste. Something along the lines of Say Goodbye in terms of tempo, yet still challenging, would have been more suitable. Being told it was not going to get aired (I assume because ABC thought it sounded wrong for a tribute) only added to the angst as Lindsey threw both a tantrum and a Rennaisance the night before it aired. Cue the tortured artist again.

I still think it's a good guitar piece, if it was an instrumental!

Again, it can be complex but in a different way, as I said "Say Goodbye" is an example of this.

If you want to listen to a well executed example of a tribute to George listen to "Isn't It A Pity" by Eric Clapton and Billy Preston or even better "I'll See You In My Dreams" by Joe Brown. Both at the Harrison tribute gig and both heartfelt and honest.

I'm still left wondering why, of all the artists ABC could have asked to do a tribute to George, Lindsey got the gig.

By the way...I am convinced that Lindsey will stay the tormented artist until he dies. It's his muse, and weird sh*t came out of him. I wish all the " i liked him until he became a whiny spoiled childish jealous I wannabe different-freak "-fans a very happy life, but I'm not waiting for an album full of peacekeepers. I want him to keep walking the Ledge-also if that means he falls off every now and then.

Well, having said that, I'm basicly waiting for an album.

Gerald, as Chili is on the subject of national stereotypes.

Remember the boy with the finger in the dam? A hero.

But if Lindsey had played "Here Comes The Sun" to him the fingers would have gone in the ears and your nation would have flooded.... :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: ;)

I find it humorous that Lindsey's version of "Here Comes the Sun" and "appreciation" would even be in the same sentence. I love the Buck, but damn did he butcher that tune! The finger picking was nice, but it sounded like he was making up some riffs from another song, and trying to pass it off as 'Here Comes the Sun'. What's even more sucky, he's more than capable of doing a semi-faithful rendition of the tune. Now THAT would have been something.

I could't agree less. The beatles did a faithful rendition. Who the h*ll is waiting for faithfull renditions? Screw them. Lindsey's the best butcher in town. You know what I think is grey faceless rubbish? That perfect cover of Love minus zero. Well done. But faceless and 13 in a dozen.

But hey, every Clapton/Knopfleraddict has his home in Thirteen-in-a-dozen. I knew that.

I'm just thankful that Lindsey only did "Here Comes The Sun" the one time and hasn't tried to shove it down our throats via CD & DVD ever since (DID YA HEAR THAT, MICK?!?). One shot, over & done with. I DO have to commend Lindsey on THAT.

I just really blame the trogladytes that started distributing the mp3 all over the damn planet. It just is one of those performances that the fewer ears that experience it, the better.

Hey dude! I thought you had fallen off this thread. Nice to see you back!:wavey:

I actually liked his version of Love Minus Zero (I've been told my travis picked version is better :o  ) and I thought it was nicely done. NOW an example of a well thought out cover, that is different from the original without falling into the tasteless/unstructured catagory that HCTS is in is the Rumours forum in the form of nightbird28's Go Insane. (If you can get it)

And, when Schlosser replied, Beethoven's answer was:

"Huh?"
