View Full Version : My night with Stevie

Hey guys!

Thanks for the PM's  I was so nervous going into the concert last night. We left during the encore, so I missed beauty & the beast, but i'll catch it at the next show  My brother, myself and 4 other people were there. We waited for about 20-30 minutes for Stevie to ready herself, and she came out of her dressingroom! I was first in line, so I introduced myself to her, and vice versa, and I gave her the flowers I brought for her, and then i gave her my Buckingham Nicks to sign and she goes "Oh, this cover. The one that caused all the trouble" and i asked her why, and she said that the day after that the cover had been taken, she took it home to get her parents approval, and she put it under her bed, and the next day she had to be rushed to hospital to have an ovarian cyst removed  and forgot to show them, and they only saw it when it came instore. I said i thought it was pretty tasteful, and she said she thought so to, but you know how parents are  She then shook my hand again and moved on, but at the end of signing things for people, she answered all our questions. I asked her about the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour and wether they would be coming to NZ. She said that she wouldn't sign her contract unless they would  I also asked her if Christine was considering joining back up for this tour. She said no and explained that she really did not just want to do it any more, so nobody was going to force her, and said that FM are going to bring 6 of her songs into the set, and they will decide what they are when they start rehersals in January  She ponited at my BN cover and said "You know, when its only those two dark people, there it is not really FM" and I said, Christines songs balance out both Lindsey's and yours and she agreed. The were a few other things said, but nothing of major importance, and then she proceded to leave, and i shook her hands again, and told her i was looking forward to seeing her in New Plymouth & Christchurch - and she said "Cool, i'll see you there"

I remembered that i wanted to ask her about her a new album just as i was leaving, but said on the card that was in the flowers that we were all looking forward to the next album, so if she reads that...

That is pretty much the gist of it all, but it was so amazing to meet her. She is so tiny and fragile - she really is just like a china doll :) Her skin is just as flawless as it looks in the magazines.

I also met Vanessa Carlton, and we had a chat, and she signed my tourbook, and signed things for the other people. But I went to grab my pen off her when she was leaving, and she thought I was handing out my hand for a handshakeand she then took off with my pen

How many people can say that they met Stevie, and Vanessa Carlton stole their pen all in the same night

Wow!!!

I'm so pleased for you, you're so lucky! Great news that the FM tour sounds like a sure thing now.

Sounds like you had a really lovely few minutes with Stevie. Congratulations!

Somebody cover Brandon's eyes before he reads this...

I have to say, I'm mildly intrigued by this prospect (at the very least, this makes things interesting enough that I would actually consider going to a concert, if it's not too expensive). I'm not holding my breath that they'll make the most interesting choices or perform them tastefully, but ideally I think Stevie could do a great job on songs like "Oh Daddy" and "Brown Eyes," and Lindsey could really tear up "Think About Me" and "Isn't It Midnight." Or how about a full-blown "Hold Me" rave-up?

If they do perform a handful of Chris's tunes, I just hope (completely in vain, I know) they drop "Don't Stop."

How many people can say that they met Stevie, and Vanessa Carlton stole their pen all in the same night

If I had a nickel...

Glad you had such a great time!

I highly doubt that they're going to do six of christine's songs. Im sure it will be more like 2-3 when they actually start rehearsing. And is your month system different in Austrailia, is January there the same as January here?

I rarely say "LOL" but: LOL.

With the exception of cultural institutions like the Jewish and Chinese calendars, the world operates on the same dating system.

Can you imagine the economic headaches if different countries used different calendars?

Well I know it's summer there now, so I figured maybe it was also July or August there too. I guess Im wrong. So they'll rehears in freaking JANUARY. There better be some sort of recording between now and then. Fleetwood Mac, Rhiannon Project, Solo album for either Lindsey or Stevie.

I have to agree, it does sound a little worrying that they're going to bring some of Christine's songs into the equasion. But I agree with you, Jyqm - Hold Me rave-up, indeed! I'm sure that would be brilliant!

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see what happens...

Well, we actually knew that they'd be touring next year. Bands typicall rehearse anywhere from four to eight weeks before hand. So that puts the tour in March of next year, which makes sense time frame-wise.

Christine songs without Christine? Erm ... after seeing what they did on Live in Boston, I'm afraid I can't recommend it.

Sorry, rest-of-the-Mac. Wuv you!

I don't know about 6 of Christines songs... But it makes alot more sense if she were talking about 6 of her own songs being added to a FM set. This would backup what Mick said in the Rockline Interview just before the kick-off of the 2004 leg of the tour when he said probably what they would do for the next tour is add in Stevie's solo and Lindsey's solo tunes to the set - this would eliminate the need for seperate solo tours by those two.

I think that could be really interesting...

A lot more sense in general maybe. But not grammatically, nor in the context of foxyluva's conversation with her:

I also asked her if Christine was considering joining back up for this tour.

Seems pretty obvious that she means 6 Christine songs.

when is it going to be my turn to win a meet and greet contest???

as for christine's songs.... yyyyyeah, no. christine's songs work with christine's voice. as much as i love stevie's voice... stevie could not so songbird. we know she can't do don't stop. she could not do say you love me, or little lies. well, i guess she could, but they wouldn't sound like christine's songs. so what's the use?

Foxyluva I am so happy for you! Yeah, I have heard the ovarian cyst story before (I think that I even posted about it on another thread) and was kind of surprised that she opened up about that. She must have felt comfortable around you.

As for the Christine songs I really think that is a bad idea. Stevie gets the lyrics wrong when she only does 2 of her songs. I don't want her to do anymore.
I think that some solo stuff is a good idea as long as we get a few different ones from Lindsey. By the way what is Stevie and the rest of Fleetwood Mac going to be doing until January? Do you think that it is possible that Lindsey will have a solo album out and tour this year?

I know this might not be a popular thing to say in here, but Lindsey's prospects for putting out a solo album anytime soon are dismal at best.
Have you seen the Destiny Rules documentary? What they really said to him in between the lines, as far as the reasons they felt it was better that he sell the songs to Fleetwood Mac and release them that way, was, "Lindsey, it's been too long and you're no longer in the loop. You don't have the selling power to release a solo album."

Think about it this way, maybe - Stevie's last solo album only sold 500,000 copies. That's considered to be pretty poor, compared to, say, Britney Spears or Madonna. It made the record company maybe 2 million bucks, tops - probably more like $800,000. That's chump change for a huge mega-corporation. And Lindsey's stuff is far less popular than Stevie's, as far as solo albums go. I honestly don't think he'll be able to, at least not with a major label, as he probably wants.

In his defense - if the record companies were more willing to advertise and do videos the way they did in the '80s, then Lindsey's stuff would probably be a lot more marketable.

A gold record is considered "poor" only in Stevie's mind, when she's self-involved enough to dare compare herself to the likes of Britney Spears.

She's got nothing to prove to anyone except herself - who unfortunately is ridiculously eogtistical and totally unrealistic. Same deal with Lindsey. They're both mind-numbingly stupid when it comes to the way they perceive their solo careers these days.

Reprise Records is owned by Warner Brothers Records.
Warner Brothers Records is owned by Warner Brothers, Incorporated.
Warner Brothers, Incorporated is owned by Time-Warner.
One of the biggest multi-national megacorporations in the world.

The most TISL could have made, on its first release, was about $800,000.
There was no DVD, very little radio play, and there were no singles.
Financially, there was no reason to even bother, from their point of view.
Lindsey's solo sales, in my opinion, would have been worse.

Believe it or not there may be a practical side to the way they view this -
once the record company drops them - and I'm sure it's been discussed -
it will be very hard for them to get another contract.
Things aren't actually sailing all THAT smoothly...

By the way, just for fun I just looked up Warner Brothers Records - not Time Warner who owns them, but WBR itself. Their operating revenues for 2005 were 3.5 billion dollars. They currently have Madonna and James Blunt under contract with them, who of course are selling like wildfire. I'm sure Stevie, Lindsey, Mick and John have been in the *business* long enough to know that they have to be practical in order to survive. But Lindsey, in my opinion, needed a little more persuading, in terms of whether it was really realistic to release a solo album under a major label.

Time Warner itself is at about 42 billion. They don't need the money, and they can take it or leave it. Stevie's aware of that, i.m.o.
She's not being arrogant, she's being aware of reality and that she has to play the game a certain way in order to survive.

From "Love is the Plan, the Plan is Death" by James Tiptree, Jr., a.k.a. Alice Sheldon (1973):

"Remembering—
Do you hear, my little red? Hold me softly. The cold grows.
I remember:
—I am hugely black and hopeful, I bounde on six legs along the mountains in the new warm! … Sing the changer, Sing the stranger! Will the changes change forever? … All my hums have words now. Another change!
Eagerly I bound on sunward following the tiny thrill in the air. . . .
I captured you whole in all your tiny perfection, though you sizzled and spat and fought me like the sunspark you are. . . .
Will you remember, my heartmate? Will you remember and tell them?
Tell them of the cold Leelyloo. Tell them of our love.
Tell them … the winters grow!"

PS~ Do you remember who she dedicated Landslide & Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You to?
From memory both songs were just dedicated to "all of you... even though i don't know you you're all in my hearts..." (or something like that).

Her voice is so amazing in person!! I'm so happy I went but I wish I'd paid more for a closer seat, not only was it freezing cold where we were sitting but the other people around us weren't really getting into it very much.. there were *heaps* of empty seats by us which kinda sucked.

I think I would have preferred to be on the balcony/Fuji Lounge, whatever they called it, seemed like people up there were enjoying themselves. Anyone who was up there and is reading this, I'd like to hear what it was like to be up there...

I have to say I was quite disappointed in the tourbook, but I wouldn't have left without one. The tshirts were kinda crappy and expensive, the only decent looking one was a girls' baby-tee, somehow i don't think it would have looked right on me.. :-P

I don't know what's up with "H A E W A F Y", but I think she must have worried she'd "get going" and start crying if she dedicated Landslide to her Dad. After all, there's a clip floating around of her performing it all the way back in 1978 or so, and she started falling apart even back then. It was actually kind of funny, she was like, crying but also LAUGHING at herself for crying at the same time, like, "Boo-hoo-hoo, OH GEEEZ this is HYSTERICAL - TOTALLY RIDICULOUS pull it to-GETHER STEVIE ( boo-hoo! *snif!* ) "

Warner Brothers Records is owned by Warner Brothers, Incorporated.
Warner Brothers, Incorporated is owned by Time-Warner.
One of the biggest multi-national megacorporations in the world.

What does this have to do with anything? Time Warner owns hundreds upon hundreds of different companies.

The most TISL could have made, on its first release, was about $800,000.
There was no DVD, very little radio play, and there were no singles.
Financially, there was no reason to even bother, from their point of view.

Do you have any conception of what kind of sales the majority of artists on Warner Records' various labels generate? A gold record is still a success in today's - and in 2001's - music industry. And there's been absolutely no indication that Warner was at all displeased with the numbers TISL moved.

Very little radio play and no singles? Neither of those claims is true. "Every Day" was played quite a bit on adult contemporary stations at the time of its release (and the video was aired a fair amount on VH1), and I should think a number of posters here own the single of "Planets of the Universe," the dance remix of which became moderately popular at a lot of clubs.

There was no DVD? How many albums released in 2001 included a DVD?

Believe it or not there may be a practical side to the way they view this -
once the record company drops them - and I'm sure it's been discussed -
it will be very hard for them to get another contract.
Things aren't actually sailing all THAT smoothly...

Untrue. Neither of them would likely have any trouble securing a contract at one of the many dozens of record labels that exist in the American music industry. Alternately, it would be remarkably easy for either of them to start up their own label for themselves. (As Stevie did with Jimmy Iovine to launch her solo career in the first place.)

Now THAT I agree with. And I would love to see it. If you remember, Mick had remarked, "Although sometimes I wonder" (whether they really need a large record company at this point).

Okay, so I was mistaken about no singles - there was one single released. But I can tell you that at least in Syracuse and on Long Island, there was very little radio play. It probably varied from market to market.

I still think Warner Brothers isn't really that motivated at this point. If you notice, in the Destiny Rules doc., they weren't the original record company.
There was a smaller one interested, but then Warner Brothers essentially changed their minds, I believe, and approached FM - but only once they had gotten started with this. Don't forget it had been 13 years since the last release of new material from FM.

Anyway I may be shaky in some of the details, but my main point is, Warner Brothers doesn't need FM, and the feeling may be mutual. And they probably feel even less motivated about solo records. In my opinion Stevie actually spelled all this out in the Destiny Rules doc. when she was talking about why she couldn't support a double album. And speaking of solo records -

isn't Stevie still under contract to do one more? Doesn't seem to be any rush, huh? I personally feel there would be HUGE sales - at least in excess of 500,000 - but I'm just saying - Warner Brothers' attitude towards FM is probably a hell of a lot different than some fans may realize, and they may not really feel all that motivated. And maybe the feeling is somewhat mutual at this point. As you said, they could always release it under a label they form themselves. And personally I'm kinda wondering if that's actually such a bad idea. Ditto for Lindsey and his solo albums, and maybe Stevie too.

Here's some numbers for you, to try to show what I mean (they may be somewhat dated, but they show the general idea):

White Album: 5 million
Rumours: 25 million as of 1998 - 8 years ago. Remained at number one for 31 weeks.
Tusk: 2 million
Bella Donna: 4 million
The Wild Heart: 2 million
Mirage: 2 million
Rock a Little: 1 million
Tango in the Night: 2 million
Other Side of the Mirror: 1 million
Behind the Mask: 500,000
Street Angel: 500,000 copies, and a 'critical flop,' somewhat ( although I personally loved it and many many others did too. )
The Dance: 6 million between the cd's, dvd's and vhs tapes. Okay, definitely strong, I admit.

Trouble in Shangri-la - her self-described "Little Masterpiece" - 500,000.

Say You Will: First release of new music in 13 years. 500,000.

A business person would not see these numbers in the same way a fan would. It's a business arrangement, and neither party needs the other, really. So I'm not saying they're not TOTALLY capable of continuing, I'm just saying, WB is a business and it may no longer be necessary or even desirable for them to have such a large record company, especially for their solo albums. I actually agree with you, totally, about the concept of them forming their own record company - I think that's exactly the right thing for them to do "at this stage in the game."

Jyqm

Now THAT I agree with. And I would love to see it. If you remember, Mick had remarked, "Although sometimes I wonder" (whether they really need a large record company at this point).

And of course they don't, but as I said before, they're all total idiots when it comes to this thing, at least in today's world.

I still think Warner Brothers isn't really that motivated at this point.

No, of course they're not, Warner doesn't give two ****s about Fleetwood Mac.

There was a smaller one interested, but then Warner Brothers essentially changed their minds, I believe, and approached FM - but only once they had gotten started with this. Don't forget it had been 13 years since the last release of new material from FM.

You mean eight? (And really, it had been six. Record companies don't care if an album is comprised of "new" material or not. The Dance was "new" as far as Warner was concerned. It was newly recorded, anyway.)

Warner Brothers' attitude towards FM is probably a hell of a lot different than some fans may realize, and they may not really feel all that motivated. And maybe the feeling is somewhat mutual at this point. As you said, they could always release it under a label they form themselves. And personally I'm kinda wondering if that's actually such a bad idea. Ditto for Lindsey and his solo albums, and maybe Stevie too.

Are there fans who actually think Warner Bros. cares at all about Fleetwood Mac? If so, then you're right, the actual relationship is different than fans realize. I don't any fans claiming such a silly thing, though, at least around here.

If the feeling were mutual, however, there wouldn't be any issue. But Stevie and Lindsey are total whores to the major label system and obviously are unwilling to leave it, at least at this juncture, because apparently they still harbor some delusions that they're big stars who might move millions of units if they just had the right major label support. Lindsey in particular knew back in the late 90s that Warner had zero interest in releasing his proposed solo album. Did he go off and find someone else who would be willing to release it? No, he sat around with his thumbs up his ass for nearly half a decade before agreeing to turn his songs into a Fleetwood Mac album that Warner was willing to release. Because for whatever reason he simply can't fathom not being Warner's whipping boy.

Anyway, starting up their own labels not only isn't a bad idea, it's a perfectly good idea. Though perhaps a bit more labor-intensive than simply signing to a smaller one. There's no drawback whatsoever to either of these scenarios, except of course for the fact that with a smaller label (or with their own), they won't be given the kinds of recording advances that Warner gives them. Which to them is more or less everything. Because, again, they're total idiots.

Trouble in Shangri-la - her self-described "Little Masterpiece" - 500,000.

Say You Will: First release of new music in 13 years. 500,000.

A business person would not see these numbers in the same way a fan would.

A businessperson who has any concept of what the music industry is like today would in no way be disappointed with numbers like that from veteran artists like Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac (and in fact, the numbers for both are significantly higher). Nor would said businessperson be stupid enough to compare those numbers to numbers from the 70s or 80s.

I agree with jyqm - a gold record is still "something" in today's music climate... if reaching that level meant nothing, then why bother certifying it.

- SAY YOU WILL IN THE U.S. has sold 842,955 copies as of February 2005
- TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA has sold 650,000 copies as of April 2004
- VERY BEST OF FLEETWOOD MAC has sold 1,002,302 copies as of February 2005

Many artists have a full career selling enough of each album to be certified gold... so given the amount of time between albums for these guys either solo or with the mac, these numbers aren't that bad. Just imagine what could happen if they had a smash single.

I still think Warner Brothers isn't really that motivated at this point. If you notice, in the Destiny Rules doc., they weren't the original record company.

Nobody was the original record company. They began recording the album unsigned or without a record company willing to put it out - they were in negotiations with Warners and with Interscope in tandem. They ended up signing with Warners because Warners offered a larger advance.

And I believe Sorcerer was a single as well - I own a single cd with a couple of mixes on it - the album version and the Sheryl Crow mix?

Yeah, but unless I'm mistaken, it was just at the Rumours stage up to this point. This is confirmation! :blob1: :]

Has everyone forgotten that this is Stevie we're talking about? I think it's too early to get excited! I have noticed a few consistancies though, and for her that's saying a lot. She did mention that she would be taking off for October and November before rehearsing with FM in another article. I just wonder if she is planning on touring solo all of the time in between now and then? That seems like a lot for her.

Maybe she will just take some time off this summer and next fall? Why does she have to be doing something? She might do some corporate gigs or benefits or whatever but maybe she just wants to hang out with her family? I certainly do not see her touring from now until Oct. Or even this summer. She wants to take the summer off accoriding to Liz Rosenberg.
As for Lindsey...we will see him next winter when the Mac tours. :D

GT...why would she dedicate Landslide to her Dad in Oz? She often dedicated the song to him when he was in the audience. She is having no trouble with Landslide...at the Today show she was fine singing it. She did not seem like she was on the verge of breaking down or anything. Perhaps she is at peace knowing he is no longer suffering? Of course she misses him, as any son or daughter would, when their parent passes.

And yeah, these are pretty nice numbers for rock artists in their age bracket. They're not up there with the Stones, but very few "classic" rockers are these days. Compared to recent efforts by most of their contemporaries, both of these albums did very well. No one at Warner would have any right to be disappointed in either of them. I'm sure in the back of his or her mind everybody was hoping, "Well, maybe this one will miraculously take off and turn into a relatively big hit," but realistically, I think most folks at Warner were pretty pleased with those numbers. Quite frankly, if they actually made a profit on either of these records, they were probably ecstatic.

Didn't Rumours recently hit 30 million?

Worldwide? That's entirely possible. I believe it's certified at 19 million shipped in the U.S. at the moment.

Didn't The Stones also have problems with radio not wanting any interest in playing any new music from them? They were reduced to having their video being shown on a soap.

I would liked to have seen another FM album BUT on the brightside, without having to put in 4 or 5 new songs, they'll be more room for perhaps some that they haven't done before (or recently).

As far as Christine's songs go, in my opinion, only she should sing them. Don't Stop worked on the last tour because it was sung originally by her and Lindsey but a full blown Christine song would sound wrong sung by Lindsey or Stevie. Just my two cents.

On a final note, let's pray that Lindsey doesn't offer any fashion "advice" to Ms. Nicks. That button up sweater still haunts me

The most TISL could have made, on its first release, was about $800,000.
There was no DVD, very little radio play, and there were no singles.

Can I ask how you figure that the record company only made about $800,000 on Trouble in Shangri-La? It's possible that STEVIE only made that much, but you figure even if they get only HALF (which I'm SURE record companies get more than that), they would have made $5 million off of 500,000 copies at $20 a pop for each cd (and I understand the cds sold for less, I'm just using that as an example). I'm just wondering out of, more than anything, ignorance. I'm not trying to sound snide or condescending.

How many people can say that they met Stevie, and Vanessa Carlton stole their pen all in the same night :lol:It's wonderful to meet people you admire isnt it? I'm so happy for you!

Anyway, while I am all for them making some changes to their setlist, and doing something different, and while I agree with the 'Christine balanced out Stevie and Lindsey' (though not that Stevie and Lindsey alone makes no Fleetwood Mac), I don't think adding Christine songs and have S&L sing them is that great an idea. To me, World Turning and Don't Stop just sounded wrong. I do find it interesting that they are contemplating it, and I am interested in finding out how they are going to handle it, but I don't foresee it being anything good.

Either way, I better start saving up. Yeah.

My honest opinion is that they'd be comparing the numbers to other stars they have under contract - like Madonna and James Blunt. I'm not talking about what the specific numbers might show them, I'm talking about what the huge crash in the numbers - which obviously isn't going to reverse - might show them in view of the fact that they're approaching 60.
Believe it or not Stevie understands this very clearly and spelled it out in a little "video confessional" type of thing in the "Destiny Rules" documentary.
Anyway I'm not saying that WB is about to drop them like a red-hot-brick -
actually, I don't think they have a contract at ALL right now - I'm just saying, WB's motivation is going to be decreasing more and more over time and the band is gonna have to adapt if they wanna survive. They've survived this long and I'm sure they'll keep going if they wanna - but yeah - they can no longer afford to be "idiots" in today's world; they're gonna have to adapt to the current climate one way or another.
It's either that or tour until they're blue and throw the loot on the pile
But that's the thing - I have the impression that compared to how much effort an album takes - and the stress that goes along with all their little "differences in perspective" - touring may seem much more attractive to them at this point.

My honest opinion is that they'd be comparing the numbers to other stars they have under contract - like Madonna and James Blunt.

Okay. But this is simply wrong. Record companies don't compare every artist on their rosters to their top-selling stars. It would just be foolish to do so. Warner never had any reason to expect that Say You Will would move Madonna-level numbers, and they didn't.

I'm not talking about what the specific numbers might show them, I'm talking about what the huge crash in the numbers - which obviously isn't going to reverse - might show them in view of the fact that they're approaching 60.

Again, Warner is not stupid enough to compare Fleetwood Mac's 2003 sales figures to their 1977 or even 1987 sales figures. To do so would be unfair and unrealistic, and they're smarter businesspeople than that.

Whether they're at all interested in a future album from Stevie or Fleetwood Mac is another issue entirely. But they have little reason to be disappointed in the sales figures for either TISL or SYW.

First off, congrats on your meeting with Stevie! You got fact time which is more than most.

Senility has finally set in with this group! SIX Chris songs? Stevie and Lindsey both have a huge library to pick from and they choose songs Stevie can't pull off on her own. Lindsey could do TAM justice but Stevie on Songbird? Please no. That's why Chris and Stevie's songs were so distinguishable. They were like night and day. My guess? Their tour wasn't as hot as they would have liked and they chalk that up to losing Chris fans. This is their way of reeling them back in, or so they think. Good try guys, but no cigar. They also need a new album. Don't want to be thought of as *tour whores* like some other bands which will remain nameless. Yep, it's all about the money. Confirmed.

However, record companies don't make any money off concerts, although a successful concert tour by an older act like Fleetwood Mac is often good news for a record company that wants to push catalogue releases. Anyway, there are a multitude of factors that go into a record company's expectations of how any new album is going to sell. There's no shortage of things to take into account, plenty of which might not even have anything to do with the artist directly.

But yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of labels who would be happy to add Fleetwood Mac to their roster. They're not, however, going to lavish the band with the extravagant advances and recording budgets they're used to. So the question is really more, would Fleetwood Mac be willing to sign up with a label that isn't going to indulge their every financial whim?

(Welcome to the forum, by the way!)

Not to ruffle any feathers here but keep in mind people how inconsistent Stevie is in interviews. What she tells a fan shouldn't be looked upon any differently. Basically, don't believe everything Stevie says even if it comes from her own lips. I wouldn't get too heated about the whole 6 Christine songs thing or necessarily believe it for that matter. I mean how many times has Stevie changed her tune and so much could change between now and then. As someone mentioned in an earlier thread, everything she says should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's possible for Lindsey to release his solo album and do a tour. That is, if a month of Sundays hits the calendar one year. j/k

If FM added solo songs from both Lindsey and Stevie, I wonder which ones they'll do. Fall From Grace!

Confirmed.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, but I think the reason they are allegedly gonna do 6 Christine songs is for the "casual fan". You know, the half-stoned guy behind you that says, "Why don't they do "Say You Love Me"??" Also, I think the thought in doing 6 Christine songs lets them feel more like they've changed the set list enough from the SYW tour.

I work at Time Warner, Inc. Warners Music Group was sold back in 2002 - right about the time that FM was making "Say You Will". Our departmental colleagues in the music group broke off into the new venture, and we stopped working with them when the sale took hold. We have no stake with the Warners Music anymore...so the budget and monies off album sales have nothing to do with Warner Music - but to the group of investers who purchased the company. (You might remember in Destiny Rules - the Warners Music Exec. telling the group - "Welcome to the new Warners"...it might have something to do with the fact that there was a re-org around that time - either due to the pending sale - or because of it. I don't know what the date was when they met FM in that rented house - but the album was being recorded and the documentary was being filmed in early 2002).

You had some of it right when you researched it, but you go on to say Time Warner doesn't need the money off record sales - from a division it no longer owns? Ummmm...no. Unless... Time Warner's Home Video division still owns right to FM's DVD or Video sales....that is something I have to look into.

I'm sorry I'm coming off snarky in every thread I write. I'm sitting in the corporate office at TW on short breaks from work, just to keep my sanity, cringing at some of the comments above. (Not that I'm always right...I can barely remember the year Warners Music was sold since so much was happening to our dept. at that time).

Stevie has the wherewithal to release an album any time she chooses.

It would just be foolish to do so. Warner never had any reason to expect that Say You Will would move Madonna-level numbers, and they didn't.
Madonna doesn't really move "Madonna-level" numbers anymore, either.

It's platinum in the US, but radio doesn't play her music (new music) like they used to. The only reason the first single went top 10 on the hot 100 was because of digital downloads and single sales, not because of radio play. It was a moderate hit at radio - and it takes a combo of all three to chart on the hot 100.

The second single "Sorry" is huge overseas, but isn't getting the airplay in the US like overseas. Billboards suspects radio isn't playing it because she might be deemed to "old" for it's listeners - which I think is crazy, it's her best album by far in years IMO.

Yeah I figured it had gone platinum but I wasn't sure. I was just letting The Tower know because he incorrectly stated Madonna wasn't doing big numbers anymore. Platinum is still pretty big IMO.

Madonna's last really "big" album (excluding greatest hits stuff) was Like a Prayer. After that, she rarely moved beyond a million or two, at best. Yeah, she had a couple of big singles here and there, but her album sales haven't been HUGE.

How is going platinum within 2 months of its release not a "big" album or "HUGE"? (re: her current release).

Well, there are a couple of things here-

The music industry has been in a huge slump for the last six years or so- so, the concept of "huge" for me is related to '80's/'90's numbers. Mariah Carey's Emancipation of Mimi would equal what I was stating as "Madonna huge" numbers. If Confessions gets up to three or four million (in the US alone), then that would be considered "huge". Going platinum in two months isn't all that hot in comparison to her pre-Erotica album sales.

Her sales have dipped, but she has still enjoyed sizeable success. Ray of Light was one of her most critically successful albums, which gave her her first Grammies. And two of my personal favorite albums from her were post LAP - Erotica and Bedtime Stories. :)

I'm sure we've all got our own definitions of "big" and "HUGE," but The Tower's original point was simply that Madonna doesn't move the same kinds of numbers that she used to, which is true. She's still leading very successful career, but she's not at the same level commercially that she was fifteen years ago. But of course, who is?

She's been pretty consistent that last say 5-10 years moving probably an average of 3-4 million per album in the US, which is really good. Her albums don't seem to explode right out of the box and stay hot like what Mariah Carey did this past year selling upwards of 5 or six million in half a year and being in the top 20 all the time - which is HUGE in todays market.... But that had to do with hit singles which she had a string of. I'd be interested to know what the sales figures were for Madonna current album outside the US, which I would think are alot larger then the US.

In any case, she's not starving... she's still doing well, just not like she did back in the day.

I will say, that her current album is probably the only album of hers (except hits collections) that I can listen to front to back and like every track. I think its an excellent album!

It's platinum, which only means 1,000,000 units SHIPPED to stores....and this certainly isn't the same numbers she was bringing in years ago. As we all know American Life was certified PLATINUM when it had only sold around 500,000 copies simply because a million copies had been shipped out to stores. Even though American Life went to #1, because it was released on a "Slower week" it ended up being lower than Say You Will on the charts and dropping off the charts quicker..

Regardless of what platinum "means", Confessions on a Dance Floor has SOLD more than a million copies point blank since it's release in November. Call that what you want, I call it pretty huge numbers.
