I hope this hasn't been discussed elsewhere (If so, I am so sorry to open a new thread)
I saw the film yesterday and I don't know if it is already kind of old in the States, but I just felt I had to talk about it a bit.
I am not the hugest fan of Johnny Cash (mostly because I was never familiar with his music, not because I don't like him) and I thought that the movie was so beautiful and sincere that it can move anyone, even those with the slightest interest in him.
One of the reasons is Joaquin Phoenix (sp?)- I never really liked him, but God, that was a haunting performance. He totally owned the part. It felt like seeing Johnny Cash himself, even though he doesn't particularly look like him (and he is significantly shorter- height was a distinctive feature of J. Cash).
And Reese Witherspoon...I've always thought that she's one of the most beautiful women I 've ever seen, mostly because she is so natural - no fake tan, no hysterical Hollywood diets ets- and in the film she totally blew my mind. Her performance is so clean, so simple, so natural, that it makes it easy - even for those who were not familiar with June Carter&Johnny Cash's romance- to see the trouble she was going through as a woman in love having to fight against it, not only because of them both being married, but also because of her insecurity about their future.
And I am glad that finally, a smooth performance like this is appreciated, in a movie industry where actors have to gain weight/become ugly/play a retard or a cripple in order to be called "great actors".
Thanx for your time and sorry for the long post!
