Well I hate to be the first one to say this, but I posted a video of Stand Back/Nightbird on youtube...I received an email that the video has been deleted. I also received an email that if they find other videos that are not copyrighted, they will delete them and delete my account...
So it looks like all of the videos that are posted won't be lasting much longer.
Looks like we're back to trading

What? You think they are going to get rid of any videos that aren't the actual "music videos" for artists? How ridiculous!

Yeah I just deleted all my videos because the last thing I need is to get sued by some idiots...
What I don't understand is that you cannot download these videos at all...so I don't know why it would be such a big deal to just post the stupid things...it's all for viewing enjoyment not downloading or trading.

Well that IS really sad. I'm just as confused and thought it alright because nothing can be downloaded. And I had just barely figured out how to operate the player to watch straight through without the annoying hick-ups. I've stayed up many a night watching all the cool vids out there. When I heard this news I stayed up again last night until I was bleary-eyed watching all the great stuff I'd never seen or haven't seen in a long while. I'll be doing the same thing tonight, if there's anything left. Got stuff to do today or I'd be watching vids right now.
Thanks so much to all of you who uploaded. It's been very enjoyable. :wavey:

You're not the one who's at risk of being sued here - YouTube is. It's grossly unfair to call them idiots or be angry with them when they provided a technically illegal service that you enjoyed immensely and took great advantage of, free of charge, for as long as they possible could.
If you want to be angry at someone, direct your rage toward the media conglomerates who every day are attempting to infringe more and more on what constitutes fair use. The people behind YouTube are surely the victims in this situation, not the perpetrators.

Here is a link to a Boing Boing post about YouTube and NBC.
That's right -- NBC's lawyers are beating YouTube with a DMCA stick because the viral content distributor helped facilitate NBC's biggest viral hit, ever. http://www.boingboing.net/2006/02/17/nbc_nastygrams_youtu.html

Why is it that they are upset that the videos are not copyrighted? I would think that copyrighted videos cannot be put up because, well, they're copyrighted! You have to pay for copyrighted stuff. Videos that are not copyrighted should be freely availalbe to anyone right?

I mean if the videos arent being downloaded, whats the problem? I mean the whole copyright thing is to revent people from MAKING MONEY on someone's alses property. It doesnt seem like thats happeneing here.

And surprise, surprise, NBC's justification is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Bone up on this one when you have a chance, kids. It's the legislation that all the media conglomerates are using these days to crack down on how you see fit to use media. This is the same law that the RIAA uses to prop its cases against file sharers and to justify putting spyware on CDs.

I think krrrby simply misspoke. The videos that are being removed from YouTube are the ones that are copyrighted. You can still upload your old home movies, no problem.

Yes and no. In general, copyright laws exist to make that other people don't profit off your work. However, the media companies are using the DMCA to make sure that their profits are as large as possible, and that your use of any kind of media is as limited as possible. (Don't be surprised when the RIAA starts claiming that you don't have any right to make any copies at all of your CDs, or even put the songs on your computer or iPod.)

You Tube is making money on the videos. Advertisers pay them for for each hit, or viewing.

Don't blame the lawyers...blame the people that pay the lawyers. Lawyers are just hired guns...they work for their clients. Napster had lawyers too.

Hey guys....
http://www.tian.cc/2005/11/how-to-save-flash-videos-from-youtube.html
eta: if anyone on the apple end of things uses ffmpeg (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/) to convert, make sure you encode to mp4/mpeg and under audio, check 'invert mapping' -- apparently the audio track comes before the video in .flv and quicktime doesn't like that, but once you merge the two(?) it works out nicely.
