I really enjoy the McVie / Welch / Kirwan era. "Future Games" and "Bare Trees" are two of the most easy-going cds I believe I own. :)
One of my fave songs from this era tho is hands down "Future Games"! Welch really hit it out of the park with this one. I also love "Sentimental Lady" and "Emerald Eyes". Those always garner a replay.

In that same category as far as (my hero) Christine goes, I would probably have to say "Spare Me a Little" and "Come a Little Bit Closer" just for starters. Then again, she could basically sing the phonebook.....
Her voice has been and still is amazing. :)

YAY another Christine fan! WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME to Ledgie land! :blob2: :blob2: :xoxo:

I totally agree with all the songs you listed...

I would also add one of my fav. songs to that list "Why"...actually the entire Mystery To Me album is sublime from top to bottom!

Another favorite Welch song of mine is "Silver Heels"

I'm a big "Silver Heels" fan, too. It is quite a funky song, if not as funky as Etta James.

I'll throw in a mention for "Prove Your Love" as well, with Christine's beautiful vocal line.

Definitely. I think "Why" is the best thing Fleetwood Mac ever did & I think Mystery To Me is their best album.

You could mention all 16 Christine songs from this era and you wouldn't be wrong. They make a great CD, by the way.;)

My favorite Bob Welch songs are "Hypnotized", "Emerald Eyes"(a very underrated song), "Sentimental Lady", "Future Games" & "She's Changing Me".

Welcome to the Ledge, PsychCat. I assume that you're the same PsychCat who starting posting on the message board on Christine's website.:)

Future Games and Hypnotised are my favourite Bob Welch songs, and I have any number of favourite Christine songs - but I'll mention The Way I Feel as a particular fave.

But I can't let this thread go by without talking about Dust, Bare Trees, Sunny Side of Heaven, Station Man, Earl Gray, Without You, World In Harmony and Coming Your Way.

Or Before The Beginning, Underway, Oh Well, Green Manalishi, Man of the World, I Loved Another Woman, Lazy Poker Blues and Black Magic Woman.

Jeremy's recordings didn't show his greatest work with Mac, but I'm appreciating his songs more all the time.

As I read your post, "Mean Old Fireman" started up on my randomly-chosen Mac session here  I can't disagree with any of those songs, and I'd add "Preachin" to the list :)

I'll add "Stranger Blues" and "Teenage Darlin'" from the Boston Tea Party set. I know they're not studio recordings, but they should really be mentioned in any discussion of the best of Spencer.

Listening to "Sentimental lady" right now. Tune out the lyrics for a moment and just listen to the guitars (and John's bass coming right up the middle during that pre-chorus...), it's a breathtaking experience.

Do you prefer the Fench Kiss or Bare Trees version? Bare Trees for me.

Bare Trees, easily. The sound is much more organic and full, whereas the French Kiss version is just a little too slick-70s-pop for me, and the music isn't nearly as interesting. It all just seems a little thin. Plus, Christine's vocal part on the Bare Trees version is just sublime. Her part on the French Kiss version isn't bad, but it just can't hold a candle.

I loved Station Man...began to appreciate Danny, then Jeremy..left and the Mac became an American band. That's not a bad thing..just my opinion.
Mick and John used to come into the record store I worked in then in Memphis when they were on tour. Just regular guys who were thrilled with our selection..(I thought
it was terrible:laugh: I was spending my hard earned $ on imports back then.
I'd love to say I turned them on to Buckingham Nicks, cause I owned it at the time. Needless to say I was thrilled when they joined.
I really appreciate Bob Welch's playing....but it was not Mac to me. He was more of a jazz influenced guitarist. On the plus side, Christine blossomed
at this time...the rest is history.

As far as Penguin goes, Nightwatch and Revelation are not bad at all.

As far as Penguin goes, Nightwatch and Revelation are not bad at all.

I think what really keeps Penguin from being a good album is that it feels like something of an odds-n-sods collection, which is reflected in the arrangements and production as much as the songs themselves.

In contrast, Future Games and Bare Trees are each very much of-a-piece. They really excel at setting a particular sonic mood and carrying it all the way through each album, even when the song themselves aren't especially similar. The first three songs on Future Games are incredibly different from one another, but they flow into each other almost seamlessly. Similarly, "Sentimental Lady" is a far cry from "Danny's Chant" is a far cry from "Homeward Bound," but there's a certain aesthetic that binds those songs; they belong on the same album together.

Penguin just lacks that sense of cohesion in a lot of ways. Welch's and Christine's songs are mostly pretty good, but they don't necessarily belong together - Christine's are a little too pop, Welch's are a little too spacy, and they rub up against each other in the wrong way ("Did You Ever Love Me" into "Night Watch"? What?). Of course, Dave Walker's tunes don't help matters at all in this respect; he's off in a completely different from either of the other two. But more importantly, the arrangements and production don't bring these disparate elements together the way they did on the previous two albums (as well as on the next two). There's something a little generic about a lot of the arrangements, and the production lacks a coherent aesthetic direction, and the album suffers because of it.

Them's my thoughts, anyway. Who knew I had so much to say about Penguin today?

Ummmm..."Did You Ever Love Me?" was a single from the Penguin album. And, "Night Watch" & "Revelation" were Bob Welch tunes. I think the Robert Welch vs Fleetwood Mac royalty recovery suit was in full-swing when they were compiling the box set...hence, other than the rare outtake of "Lay It All Down" & "Hypnotized" (did they put "Sentimental Lady" on it? I don't remember and I don't feel like looking it up at the moment), Bob Welch, as a songwriter, is pretty much absent from the box set.

My fav pre-75 tunes...I have so many, but here's a list of ten that suit me for today:

Rollin' Man (I can listen to this all friggin day!)
Like it This Way (ditto)
Station Man (Is this the best slow-burn rocker you ever heard?)
Honey Hush (Nothing on the Stone's Exile compares to this)
Dragonfly (simply gorgeous)
Dust (One of the most moving songs I've ever heard)
Remember Me (The piano-bass-drum unit is really tight here)
Emerald Eyes (beautiful harmonies here)
Miles Away (what a cooker!)
Why (Need I comment?)
