After taking a good painful look in the mirror this morning, I have decided to go on a diet! It is just so easy to gain weight when it is cold outside. I'm only 7 hours into my diet and I am already in agony. Can anyone else relate?
I just hate this. Why can't I be one of those people with those super fast metabolisms? It isn't fair!

been on one since early January. I start NutriSystem sometime this week (whenever it arrives). It is hard, but the more you stick to it the easier it gets.

No, but I should be. I am turning 27 this year, and I've noticed over the last 14 months or so my metabolism slowed down at an enormous rate. I cant eat all the crap food I used to eat.

I'm doing Weight Watchers. First "diet" ever. I gained 15 lbs since Christmas (holidays and quit smoking). In three weeks, I've lost 4 lbs and my mother (who joined with me) has lost 10. WW doesn't like you to call it a "diet" though, it's a "lifestyle change".
ANYway, it does work.

How does NutriSystem work, Jason????
it's all based on the glycemic index. I ordered the weekends off program. They send you breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and dessert for each day for a month with weekends off. You just pick what you want to eat for your meal and that's it...everything's already been figured into the meals. And on the weekends they give you suggestions of what to eat to stay on track. It's a perfect mix of proteins, good carbs and fats. I'm probably not explaining it very well. www.nutrisystem.com
it's pricey but you don't have to worry about what to eat or anything and it pretty much takes out having to go to the grocery store. if it works well for me, then I'll probably stay on it for about 6 months. it is pricey though.
I have about 3 months to lose a few lbs before NOTS. That's my goal.

Calorie King has a database that counts your calories for you. You can download their software for a free trial and if you decide to buy it is only 20 bucks! I got the version for my PDA so I can have it handy. Math is hard. It is also in the axis of evil. Check them out http://www.calorieking.com/.

I need to be dieting as my food intake has been OUT OF CONTROL the last two weeks (and one day!) since I quit smoking. I have totally substituted food for nicotine. But I'm trying not to be too hard on myself, since I still haven't smoked. I can always lose the weight later. And I'm still exercising every day, so at least I have that going for me.
Good luck to all you dieters. It is hard to stay focused.

Patti- I keep telling people that the best way to quit smoking is to quit, then join weight watchers! I am too busy thinking about food to think about cigarettes.

Buy a tredmill (a good one), so you can run on it too (but they are expensive). I bought a second hand one for $1000 ($5000 brand new). Best investment I ever made! She's sitten right in front of the tv. I walk/run every morning for 45-60 minutes, five days a week, while I watch the Today show (not on weekends cause hubby & kids are home and throw my schedule out of whack). It works for me. I find exercise way easier then dieting. This way I can have my sweets at nite, which I love and not feel guilty because I know I can just hop on that treadmill and walk it off.

I loved WW, it works great if you can stick with it. I lost wiehgt & kept it off for a good 1&1/2 to 2 years, then started slacking again.
I need to start doing WW again. I'm not at my heaviest, but I'd like to lose about 15 pounds. I'm doing the elliptical machine 3 days a week, which I really love, so at least I'm not gaining. My gym membership runs out in 3 weeks though, and I've only been using the elliptical there so I may give in & buy one for home.

I was doing cardio arobics there for a while. Then, my legs really started aching. So I stopped for what I thought was going to be a few days. That was 2 weeks ago. :o I need to start up again. I've really been watching what I eat since Jan. I've slipped up quite a few times, but I've lost 5 lbs. Not good, but not bad. I cut out all fast food, and all soda. I really figured with as much of that I was consuming, I would lose weight without exercise, but I was wrong.

I cut out all fast food, and all soda.Congratulations, Sara. That's the FIRST thing ANYBODY should do who is mulling over his or her weight or general health.
Someone once asked, Do diets fail people or do people fail diets?
It's a good question. Any diet that makes you believe that there's a short-term fix is playing hooey with you.
Also, some of you are saying that you just started a specific diet two weeks ago or three weeks ago or a month ago. I think virtually ANY diet -- even the truly rotten ones -- will take water off you in the first few weeks & you'll see your weight decrease by a couple of pounds. I don't think any of that means diddly squat. I think it's far too soon to tell how you're dealing with a diet in only the first couple of weeks.
Losing weight is a bitch. We're all getting older & slowing down. Good luck to everyone who wants to be healthier. It's a long, somewhat tiresome journey, but it can definitely have its payback.

I am just so mad at myself. I basically got down to my goal weight this summer. I was pretty happy with the way that I looked and I maybe only had five pounds or so left to get rid of. Then I slipped up and started drinking frapacinos at Starbucks and ordering take out Chinese, and watching Paula Deen on the food network!
Now, 6 months later, I am practically back where I started! All that work last summer (the long hours at the gym, etc.) was for nothing! I now need to lose like thirty pounds.
I just keep thinking that if I never went off my diet then I would actually be slim right now. How stupid could I be?

Okay, first of all, you are the thinnest person I've ever met, gunty.
Diamondsnake - sorry about your gain, that sucks ass. Didn't you keep exercising when you went off your diet? Don't ever think that you are "done" staying fit, because whether dieting or not, you have to exercise. All your life. At least 3-5 days a week. So, you should get used to that idea.
Also - why are you in agony? Are you missing greasy things? Because on a diet you should really be eating every 2-3 hours or so. But the snacks should be nutritious, and the meals as well, and the meals should balance protein/fat/carbs. You probably know this already - it's hard to not eat greasy food at first. or always. That is why, like Bikerchic, I prefer to exercise rather than dieting.
Good luck! Hit that gym! (or go hiking, or play sports, or whatever you do).
My weight is evah so slowly creeping downward. evah....so....slowly...
Oh, and don't smoke pot, either *laughie*
Oh, hey, fake meat products will cut your calories dramatically while satisfying your craving for yumminess. I bought ground Boca recently and I make the most delicious satisfying burritos from it. Get this - a whole pouch of the Boca (I usually use half a pouch per burrito) only has 120 calories!!! And not much fat, cholesterol, etc. Do you know how many calories and how much fat and cholesterol the ground beef equivelant would be?! Lots.
Lets see....Apples with peanut butter is a good nutritious snack - it satisfies your sweet tooth, plus the PB satisfies your craving for fat and is filling as well. The bonus is apples are really good for you and only one apple has five grams of fiber and only, like, 70 calories!
If you are not very fond of veggies, dip those carrots and broccoli and peppers in a LITTLE BIT of ranch. Ranch isn't good for you, but if it makes you eat the veggies, it's fine. The thing about veggies is, they are really filling and satisfying. I find that if I don't get enough good nutrients, I crave more food, and fattier food.
I also recommend finding a tea you like and having that twice a day at least. Not with sugar. Acidic citrus foods help cut your appetite, like lemons and oranges. Eat walnuts or salmon, and nuts in general (in moderation) because the good fats in those help your body process the other fat that you take in much more of.
I apologize if you totally already know all about the suggestions I just gave you....:)

No, no, it was all good. I was planning on asking for a raise, but I then realized after I made a stellar presentation on my behalf, that I was a little plastered. But he was to. So I figured it was best to wait and let the stellar presentation ruminate and I would ask when both parties were sober instead. I've done well! As a result, I'm going on two buying trips, one to Toronto and one to Vegas. Yayyy!!!:blob1:

So, I've been steadily losing weight with Weight Watchers (albeit slowly). Last night was my meeting night, and I found out that I didn't lose a pound this week. :( I also didn't GAIN a pound :) , and that's good- but still. So anyway, I found out that my problem is that I'm not eating enough protein during the day. This past week, I had changed my diet to eating only fruit for breakfast. And apparently, that's not good for weight loss. So, today, I ate two Morningstar Sausage Patties at 10g of protein each and an apple. The whole thing cost me 3 points, which is good.
I have 10lbs more to go. I just keep telling myself that if it weren't for Weight Watchers I would be as big as a house right now (8 weeks without cigarettes) and that eventually I *will* adjust to this way of eating.
Amber- you are completely right with your vegetarian advice. You can eat SO much more of a soy product than a meat product. And more is good! I had a blackbean burger the other night that was so delicious. And I could rationalize the bread b/c I wasn't eating any meat.
Okay, I'm babbling- this post was really meant to say to be sure to include lots of fiber and protein in your diet if you want to lose weight.

really? Was it your hip where the top of your leg meets your butt that hurt? b/c mine's KILLING me all day, every day (ibuprofen city) and I was going to buy an elliptical this week...In hopes of replacing my uphill hikes and bike rides with something gentler. I just thought it wouldn't hurt things as much.

Same as me, and I have noticed the EXACT same thing. Sucks, eh?
People............we USAers have got to get away from all of this processed food! Much of our "food" is not even food anymore, but a bunch of chemicals and "genetically modified" crap! When you are not eating anything nutritious, your body automatically asks you to eat more and more and more, hoping that one glorious day it will get what it actually needs.

Okay, I'm babbling- this post was really meant to say to be sure to include lots of protein in your diet if you want to lose weight.Although preferably not of the sausage patty variety. . . .
Healthier sources of protein for breakfast:
soy milk
eggs
hard cheese (mix some cheddar in your scrambled eggs or make an omelet)
soft cheese (put some cream cheese on your bagel)
smoked salmon/lox (or other smoked fish like cod & halibut)
protein shake/powder
all of which are much more efficient foods in a weight-loss program.

I also recommend finding a tea you like and having that twice a day at least.
Have you tried that Lipton green tea on the go? It's like little tea straws that you empty into a bottle of water, you just shake it up and drink it. I think you're only supposed to drink half of a straw, but for flavor I have to have use the whole thing. They're sugar free, and green tea is good for the metabolism.

No. Whole Foods doesn't have Lipton. And I never buy it anyway. Is that cold tea, then? Sounds pretty good. I don't drink much green tea anymore b/c the tannins bother my stomach. And actually, I don't really drink cold tea. But i could. I do peppermint infusion - it's weird, it gives you lots of energy, but has no caffeine, and peppermint tastes good cold. I buy Yogi brand tea, usually.
Does it have other flavors? That would be great for when it's hotter and I'm on the go with my bike and shizz. easier than carrying around a container of liquid. :)
Wait - why would green tea have sugar in the first place?
Also - cheese is not good for you. (this isn't for you, Tracye). It's terrible for your intestines and your colon. It's like coating your insides with....glue...also it's not easily digested, gives most people bloat and gas.
It might be okay for dieting (not that great, really, but convenient protein and fat) but to say it's "good for you" is not accurate. It's quite high in fat, doesn't have that much protein, and is devoid of other nutrients except calcium.

I think there are other flavors...maybe peach? Anyway, I think the green tea is pretty tasty and it's easy, just dump it in a cold bottle of water and there you have it. I don't know why green tea would have sugar in it, but I'm sure I've had some that do, wait that may have been honey...
Cold peppermint tea DOES sound good. I might have to give that a try.

I almost bought that pomegranate one last week! But I didn't have enough money. Good to know it's tasty. Do you ever drink Pomm? It's way expensive, and you can't absorb that many nutrients from juices anyway, but it's good. And the bottle is cute.

I don't know whether any of you know this, but certain Beethoven cello sonatas increase & enhance weight loss in approximately 81 percent of the adult population.
Hard as it is to believe, you can eat as much as you want (assuming you are 18 years of age or older) & if you listen carefully to the Richter/Rostropovich 1963 recording of Op. 102 No. 1 (Sonata No. 4 in C), you will lose approximately 5 pounds per hour! Then, once the sonata is complete, your weight will stabilize at that point for a period of up to four weeks!
The Beethoven cello sonatas. On Philips CD. Eat like a pig, & let the Adagio--tempo d'andante--allegro vivace burn away the calories. Like magic. Like Beethoven. Like Life Itself.

I cut out all fast food, and all soda. That'll definitely work. I've lost an obscene amount of weight over the past year by avoiding fast food and drinking only water. I've been pretty slack about exercise, though, and the weight's still coming off. So I guess I'm lucky there.

That'll definitely work. I've lost an obscene amount of weight over the past year by avoiding fast food and drinking only water. The water bit really seems to help most people. I think many people's problem with it is that they just don't really love drinking water -- it bores them or it's bland. Whereas with me, although I hate the flavor of tap water & never drink it, I happen to love the flavor of distilled or purified water, & so I am able & willing to drink a gallon of it (or more) each day.
So if you're drinking a gallon of water, you don't have much in the way of thirst for other stuff like soda or tea. You just don't drink it.
I would say the only liquids I have drunk in the past year or so are purified water, orange juice & soy milk. (I should drink a little green tea occasionally.)

Had an umbilical hernia (part of my intestine was trying to escape through my navel)...during the operation to repair it (which was about a 3 on a 10 scale of "life threatening-ness")...as I was coming out of anesthesia, I couldn't breathe and I died on the table 3x's before they could get me intabated...they then discovered I had Pericarditis (2 litres of fluid was in the pericaridial sac surrounding my heart) and the massive amount of fluid had "paralized" my lungs while I was under anesthesia. It was only an acute case, since I've had no relapse of any fluid collecting in the sac since.
It was pretty scary times for everybody BUT me, I was oblivious to all that was going on. Thank you, Mr. Morphine.

I don't believe in diets. They don't work...I mean - they do - but it's usually not long-term.
So I'm on an eating right and exercising regiment. I am cutting down on portions - because mine are WAY out of control - and I'm going back to the gym. You don't get results as quickly as a fad diet - but a lifestyle change is the only proven and long-term "diet" that works!
I'm a big proponent of just eating right and exercising...it's always worked for me :D

You know about fasting, right? Fasting is good for you, and a liquid diet is fasting. If you get books about fasting, the liquids suggested will be more specific and will probably not be pedialyte, but most animals and humans have fasted throughout history for health reasons....we just don't do it cause we're gluttonous pigs.
In case anyone is wondering "why is fasting good for you?" - think about it - all your organs get to rest and clean themselves out - they're not busy digesting food all the time. It's a good purification tool. It's good for your colon as well.

You know, I used to feel the same way, but now that I've gotten back on a steady tennis/aerobics alternating schedule every week I've found that I like exercise much more than I thought: it reduces stress, gets those endorphins surging, and really gives you a sense of accomplishment. Plus it has really changed my overall attitude...when you start feeling stronger and healthier you feel much better about yourself. I don't feel as negative and lazy as I used to, it's like a whole attitude change and now I actually CRAVE working out. Very weird.

Once you do that, you might find your weight actually stays where it is or even creeps up a bit. Don't be alarmed. Muscle weighs more than fat.
That's the drawback of traditional diets: this sort of all-or-nothing preoccupation with weight, regardless of how muscular an individual's body makeup is (the same problem with the Body Mass Index, or BMI).
People who exercise fairly seriously are generally less concerned about how much they weigh than about how much fat they're carrying around. There are tools for checking body fat percentages available at the big gyms.

If you start exercising rigorously, you'll begin to (slowly) tone up & even build muscle.
Personally, I'm not hung up on the number itself, I just want my clothes to fit better. That whole, "can't breath, stomach flopping over jeans" is very uncomfortable. You do weigh in each week at WW, but they really try to get you to NOT focus on the numbers.
David, will I really come to love exercise??? :o

Jannie, I think you WILL come to love exercise. I was an on again/off again exerciser for a long time. Then when I hit about 35 I thought, "I REALLY don't like the way I look", so I started working out consistently. I'm now 46 and can't imagine my life without exercising. It's very important to me and when I can't work out for whatever reason, I feel like ****. I get up early in the morning and work out before work. It's a great beginning of my day and it ensures that I get my workout in without finding excuses in the evening not to do it.

I'm counting on this! I think it may happen this time because I'm not smoking anymore (quit almost 9 weeks ago). Maybe it will be easier? I just want to EAT again. And feel healthy. This has been such a life changing year for me! :)

You're doing great Jannie. Congrats on 9 weeks, I am at 3 weeks today myself. I still don't feel better not smoking, except I don't cough as much. But I think I never truly felt bad smoking because I worked out. Funny thing happened to me yesterday morning. I had a really long, great workout and when I was done, I had such a serious cig craving I thought I would die! That was a big trigger for me...work out really hard and then smoke when I was done. But I fought the temptation.

Well, I am the proud new owner of a Vision eliptical machine. I had previously been looking in the classifieds, but stopped because there was nothing listed for months. Saturday I just happened to be perusing the tiny little town newspaper, and saw an add "Eliptical, must sell, moving." Went & looked at it, tried it out & bought it on the spot. Poor Mark - I drag him across town on a moment's notice, spend $$$ that we don't really have, make him move the thing into his truck to take home & carry the 200 pound monster downstairs into the basement/rec room. He either really, really loves me, or thinks I'm really, really fat.
The thing's been used 10 times at most, it's gym quality (it actually seems smoother than the ones I've been on at the gym) and probably less than 1/5 the original price! I used it this morning, and wow, what a workout. I feel healthier already. :)

Yes you will! I promise. You just have to find an exercise regimen you enjoy. I play lots of tennis because I enjoy playing, it's great fun to me. Swimming sounds good, swimming is fun, although, I tend to goof off more in a swimming pool than actually swim laps so that's probably why I like it! Also, listening to your favorite music while working out helps tons .

One of the worst triggers, diabolically. :( I still haven't smoked, though. Also, I drank a glass of wine each weekend evening and wasn't dying of crave-ation, so that's cool.

I've actually found drinking helps me to not smoke. I don't think I'm ready for a bar environment yet, that's too social, but I have a glass of wine every evening when I get home from work and it's made me feel better. I read somewhere that alcohol stimulates the same portion of the brain as nicotine. I don't really know whether or not that's true, but it does make me feel better and I've a couple of friends who quit smoking who said the same thing.

This happens to me too and I haven't smoked for a long time! Okay, that's not entirely true, but I haven't been a regular smoker for 3+ years and I hardly ever smoke. The craving isn't as strong as it once was though, and it passes very quickly.

Score! I'm psyched for you, Paula, that is great. I love the elliptical trainer and am going to the gym soon myself. I wish I had a basement! Yeah, about a week. I ordinarily wait longer to weigh myself, but I'm off from work for a while after today & won't have access to the good scale. I wanted to have a baseline for when I get back, so I weighed myself & it happened to be less than last week.

I'm still losing, as well. Didn't get to exercise much this past week (besides riding my bike everywhere going to work and doing errands and stuff) but I did my weights at home, and some yoga as well. The rain is putting a bit of a damper on the hiking. The hike would now be a "mudslide" if I did it. Anyway, I still lost another pound. It's getting more incentivefull for me, because my face looks a lot better already and my stomach is pretty flat. My face is the really exciting part. Oh, I buttoned this one pair of my favorite pants today for the first time in forever (I mean and still be able to breathe).

I've smoked for about 30 years, as I started when I was a very young teenager. It's so difficult because it's all I've ever known....me as a smoker. I told my 15 year old nephew that I would kick his ass if he ever started smoking. I don't think he will, but still....

Janet, that's amazing! I'm really impressed with by how well you've done, I honestly thought it would take you a few tries before you'd get to this point. You have done so well.
My grandmother quit cold turkey after she had a stroke. This surprised me because she says she wishes she had just died but if that really were so wouldn't she just keep on smoking? She's never been quite right mentally. It's very sad.
She didn't take care of herself and ate a lot of saturated fat (cheese and danish), got no cardiovascular exercise, and smoked. Still it seemed she would be healthy forever. The poor woman was on her floor for nearly a full day after her stroke unable to move after her stroke. :( She was right next to the end table where the phone was but she could not reach up to get it. She was paralyzed on one side and too confused to act. I'm glad she survived since she was only 68 at the time I think. Even though she's so difficult (understatement) I will be sad when she is gone.

She was big into Atkins (low carb) for years - I think that's how she lost the weight for The Dance. Kept it off for a while that way, but it eventually crept back up. IMO, that diet is a short term weight loss gimmick, not a lifestyle change. Our bodies were not made to live without carbs, it will make you sick eventually.
In her most recent interviews (one of the Aussie ones posted over in the Stevie forum recently), she says she's doing Weight Watchers & it's working well. She does some exercise, I believe she is into Pilates and/or yoga.

You shouldn't be having just fruit at lunch if you're on a diet. It's not great for your blood sugar. You should be having some protein, some fat, and some carbs. Fruit is only carbs, and sugary ones at that. If you don't keep your blood sugar stable you'll just get really hungry later anyway.
Also, there is soy mayonnaise, and lowfat mayo. Also, guacamole is a nice substitute for mayo (if you like guac) and it's good for you. You could compromise and have turkey instead of salami, too - way lower in fat. You could get whole grain bread. you could put extra veggies on your sandwich (cucumber, sprouts, tomato, lettuce, etc).

Dammit, I need to get back off the white bread. Last summer, I was off of it. I like whole grain, WHEN I've got lots of fresh veggies to put on it. In the winter though, I like something hot for lunch, and grilled cheese on anything but white, well, it sucks!
In a few weeks, I'll start planting my garden, and get back into lots of veggies.
And I noticed about getting hungry, shortly after eating fruit only, for lunch. I was okay for a couple hours, then STARVING. But, if I'm in "weight loss mode", I can put up with being hungry.

Okay, but your metabolism is slowing down, and when you only have sweet carbs your blood sugar switches to "store fat" mode. You can have the same amount of calories or nearly so as your fruit and eat something much, much better for you and your losing weight aspirations.

Well, what are you recommending, peanut butter and the like? Which is FINE with me, if so! I have almost no sweet tooth at all, and love protein.
I should maybe do Atkins. I live for meat and cheese. (I'm literally salivating, just typing meat and cheese).:o

Lean turkey. Chicken breast. Nuts (in small quantities). Boca. Lean Beef.
One of my favorite snacks was those really thin pieces of steak? The little small fillets? Do you know what I'm talking about? Just still watch your portions. Like, have fruit and a chicken breast. That much chicken only adds like, 150 calories or something, 3 grams of fat (around that), but you'd be so much more full.
Have nuts for a snack. Cheese - mmm, I'd keep the cheese portions down, but you could still have some. I used to eat a string cheese stick for a snack. Or I'd put a couple slices on my sandwich. Just count your calories, stay in a certain range. I like to mix things that I don't like as much but should eat, with a small amount of things I shouldn't eat but are good. Like, broccoli with a bit of cheese, or raw veggies with a smidge of ranch. I put spinach in my boca burritos.
Anyways...yeah.

Plus, sweets make your sugar spike and then drop. When it drops you become hungry. So they actually make you more hungry in a shorter time than whole grains and protein do. The latter stave off hunger longer.

I said that already, but I'll forgive you this time. :wavey: But next time you don't pay very, very close attention to every little thing I say, I'm going to have to get mad. Very mad.

Amber, you're like our personal nutritionist, I love it!
:woohoo:
I should've been a personal trainer/nutritionist like I wanted to when I was 22-23. I've been reading about and interested in this stuff since I was 12. And I study alternative things (food, medicine, any new thing that someone talks about). I'm just really interested in it for some strange reason. Okay, I suppose the reason is because I wanted to stay fit, or lose weight, or feel better, or look better. And I was an athlete forever. I guess it's not really so mysterious after all...:p
I wish I could remember law stuff so easily. It's going okay with that, though.

I've probably said it too, but it is very important! Muy importante! Sorry about that, normally I take in everything you say verbatim and commit it to memory immediately! :D
I just got back from Dunkins, I really wanted a donut but I didn't get one because of this convo. Instead I got an iced coffee with Splenda. Yep, artificial sweetener, I hope its not too bad for me! It saves me about 100 calories though and all of that lovely granular sugar that sinks to the bottom! It tastes almost exactly the same though.

Hey, that's really good! :woohoo: It's my pig week. So then I'm riding my bike all the way to earthjustice and home instead of taking BART.
I use fake sugar when I get coffee, too, even though I shouldn't. But if I put real sugar and cream in my coffee, the coffee makes me tired. And that's really the opposite of what you want from coffee.

Yeah, you get the boost for like 45 minutes and then you're pooped! I figured a few packets here and there won't kill me. While counting calories those few sugars really add up! Like 100 calories per day which, after 35 days, could be a pound lost!
I've been counting during the week and taking weekends off but still watching it fairly well. I'm going to add the weekends though soon. Tonight I kick my ass at the gym. I'm going up 5 lbs on a couple of my leg weights.

Hey, I never thought of it in such small amounts, that's a good idea. (the 35 day, 100 calories thing).
You have leg weights? Are they making those calves bigger? My legs are weights. That's really good, suze. It's been raining here for 3 weeks straight, and so I had to start jumping rope, which I did Saturday, and my calves are still mega sore. I'm still at that lowest weight, though, which is awesome.

According to Calorie King I can have about 1350 calories a day and still lose weight. If I exercise then I can have more but I try not to have too much more to get an extra gain on the burn. I'm trying to think in gradual terms though so that the weight loss will stick. If I go to hungry then I'll just binge. Raining for 3 weeks?
Maybe I'll add the calf exercise since my gym has the machine. I didn't do legs for a long time because I don't want them to bulk up but I don't think they will and adding some muscle will be really beneficial.

Um, yeah, I don't think your legs will look "bulky". I'm suprised you didn't do them, there's a lot of muscle in the legs - you could be burning hella calories! Besides, everyone knows that muscly legs are more shapely and attractive. :D
1350 - I try to stay in there, too. Between 1200-1500 is usually my goal for the day. You can actually get plenty of food with that. If you eat right. Thank goodness for Boca. And apples. Did you know a cup of broccoli only has 25 calories, but like, 60% of the days vitamin C? And it's so filling. And almost every veggie and fruit is like that.
Sounds like you're doing good, Suze!

Well, I read somewhere that pair shaped women should only do upper body strength training to help balance the body out. However, I've since decided the guy who said that must've been a jackass. Plus, adding muscle reduces the look of cellulite. Also, it does look good, you're right, my legs already look way better after a couple of months.
I do get plenty of food in, yes. I still do not eat enough fruits and veggies though, that always seems to be a battle for me for some reason. I love them too, so that it isn't it at all! No I didn't realize broccoli had that much vitamin C, cool!
Counting has really helped with my discipline. Last night I was at my limit and got kind of hungry before bed time but just sucked it up and went to bed. I lived through it! I feel more in control and that makes me feel more confident too.
Sounds like you are also doing well, Amber! :)

I got weighed last night (heh) and just wanted to announce I've lost another 2 lbs. this past week. My total loss is 6.2 with 9 more to go. I'm back in the 130's (barely- 139.2), so I'm pretty happy. I'm munching on a Fuji apple right now-- it's de-lish.

Hello everyone.
I am trying to eat really well but I find it hard to only eat about 1400 calories per day. At least that is what I was told to eat to lose weight. I think my problem is the fact that I am always hungry. I will eat and then I will be full but it only lasts for about a half hour and then I am hungry again. I usually allow myself snacks such as yogurt or some pretzels but for some reason that actually makes me even hungrier. LOL! So how do all of you do it? I need some tips to stop eating so much. I think the problem to is that I sit at a computer all day at work and for some reason it makes me want to eat all the darn time.
I will give you some background info about me. I weight about 132-134 and I am about 5 5. I have a fairly athletic build but my main problem is cellulite. I am only 28 and I work out about 4-5 days a week and have been for about 14years now but I cant get rid of this darn cellulite. Its upsetting because I want to wear shorts in the summer but I am getting dimpling on my upper and lower thighs which makes it hard to wear shorts unless they are down to my knees. I lift weights and do either the treadmill or elliptical so I am not sure what else to do. Does anybody here have any ideas? I have no problem being the same weight forever because I look thin in my clothes its just the cellulite that scares me.
I was going to get endermologie but I hate to pay a ton of money if it doesnt work.

First of all, you don't need to lose weight at 132 and 5'5", actually, I think that's within the correct weight range for someone of your height--not too skinny and definitely not fat. About the cellulite--I don't know! I think sometimes you can be thin and still not get rid of it, it could be genetic, who knows? Unfortunately we can't all look airbrushed just from working out . Anyone else have any suggestions?

Self tanner helps camouflage it. 90% of women have it, we try to live with it as best we can. I don't know if anything works for it yet but lord knows the beauty industry tries to sell you crap. I think Dove came out with a cellulite reducing cream that won't break the bank if you want to try it.
Also, to fight hunger, pretzels won't do it because they have a high glycemic index due to all that white flower. Neither will yogurt since it is loaded with sugar, unless you are eating the sugar free variety in which case that should help.
But I hear ya sista, I am always hungry! I would love to get down to your weight though. I carry about 15 more lbs than people would expect and never tell anyone my weight. Would you believe that my frikkin gym has the scale in the middle of everything? Ugh!
Nuts are also a good snack to satisfy and stave off hunger, you've just got to watch portions because they are not low-cal!

Hey thanks for responding. I recently just bought that Jergens Natural Glow lotion and I absolutely love it. It makes my legs look a little better but its hard to camoflauge the dimples!! I kinda had a feeling that the pretzels were a bad idea. I am trying not to eat much sugar and I love salty food. Of course that probably is my downfall. When I eat yogut it is the sugar free kind but it doesnt do much for me. I like nuts but I have a problem with them in the fact that once I start I cannot stop eating them. HA HA.
You would like to be down to my weight? That sucks about the scale at your gym being out in the open like that. I wouldnt want to weight myself in front of other people like that. Thats awful that they dont put it somewhere else. I think I feel the need to be thinner because everyone in my family is smaller than me. I know that sounds strange but I would like to be the really thin one for once. The funny thing is that basically no matter what I do my weight never really goes below 125. Figures!

I regained that 2 pounds back that I just lost, but I know it's because I wasn't watching what I eat carefully enough. Stupid out of town guests & parties & ordering out. Blergh. I did, however, maintain my workouts on The Beast as well as light weights for my arms. So I'm not going to get upset about it, I'll keep trucking. Oh, and I'm getting my period, so I'm allotting about 10 pounds to water weight. :woohoo:
I like Fuji apples too, but Granny's are my fave. Crisp & tart - I hate a dull mushy apple. Apples are so good, and so good for you. I like citrus fruits too, but they're kind of messy & not as easy to eat on the run. Bananas - eh. Love peaches & plums in season, and berries! Yes, berries will be in season soon. OK, so, apples it is for now.

Stupid Nutrisystem bastards.
If you're interested check outCalorieKing.com. I got their software which was only $20. I have had good luck entering my daily intake into it and not getting overly frustrated. It is pretty easy to use. Then of course you eat your own choice of foods but you have to stay within your calorie allotment. That motivates you to eat low-cal so you can have more food and not have to be starving for hours.
Weight Watchers is supposed to be the most successful plan out there because you eat real food and it is a lifestyle change. I'm just not so much of a joiner that way, maybe to my own detriment!

Suze, if you don't want to go to meetings, think about their online program. You get the points information and a computer program or whatever to help track your food. The boards are great, too, for questions and just general support.
I was always a little weirded out going to meetings because I was going by myself, and I was always BY FAR the youngest person in there. The other women were always soccer moms or grannies. My leader was a total lush and they would all look at the two of us like we were crazy for saving our flex points for liquor.

When people talk about a five pounds weight gain, I always have to wonder if they are maintaining all equals. In other words, If I weighed myself after drinking lots of water, eating lunch, and prior to a bowel movement, I am sure I would be five or more pounds heavier than the last time, if I these factors were not present. In other words, consistency with the variables is a significant thing if you are talking only five pounds.
P.S. - did I just say bowel movement on The Ledge

I know what you mean, but I always weigh myself on the same scale, same time of day, before meals.
One time a former coworker of mine weighed herself before & after she pooped. She lost 3.5 pounds.

this is one thing I need to work on. I really need more fiber in my diet. I've been trying those fiber chewable things and they are ok, but I still wonder if I'm getting enough fiber...

LMAO - self propelled on the way there
Also - raw veggies or, to a lesser extent, steamed veggies, esp. brocoli, will move ya with ease  Of course, you will have few friends who want to be around you :o
Basically, I eat:
a bowl of Kashi "Go Lean" with a little 1% milk for breakfast
I have a protein shake (ISS Advantage Matrix is the best taking I have found ) at around 10:00
I have a small steak, pulled pork (dry), or a chiken breast with steamed veggies for lunch - or a salad with one of these meats.
Another protein shake at around 4:00

This is a usual day, but I go off of it every now and then, like the other day when I wanted masan (sp.?) chicken at my fav. Thai place. I also hit the popcorn at the movies at least once a week. I mean ya gotta live and a strict diet will not last long for me
I usually head to the gym at around 4:30 or later, where I hit the weights for an hour and then do cardio for an hour or more. But, I skip some days - again, ya gotta live  Also, if you are not a gym person, do some push ups at your house. Start small - say with 10 - and work your way up in reps.; you'll be up to 25 and then 50 in no time. Also, walk around the block - start at a slow pace and increase it and the distance.
Anyway - my $0.02
Anyone try those All Bran granola bars. Very very fiber-y and actually pretty tasty.
I've found that since I've moved closer to work and consequently walk most days, I've been in probably the best shape I've ever been in. Not a gym person, never will be. So slip on your Prada Sport and get moving, guys!

WOW! I am so impressed with all of ya'll...I have just lost 50 lbs myself but I didn't actually do anything to do it. Unfortunately, my friends heard me talk about my "Topamax Diet" for my migraines and it's all the rage now. Especially since it happened in 5 months or so...but once I reach my ideal weight my body will stop, and I will actually have to follow your advice and work on it myself. Being a biologist, I should be better at this diet thing since I know all about the glycolytic pathway and all the secrets of metabolism...BUT I don't practice what I preach to my students in my courses. Who has time for 5 small meals a day? I barely have time for 3!

Just a warning to those increasing the fiber - you also need to increase your fluids, or the fiber could actually cause constipation.
Jason - a lot of "diet" foods are fortified with extra fiber. It's like Weight Watchers thinking - if an item has more fiber, it's fewer points than one without fiber. WW yogurt has fiber in it, so do most "light" breads. Fresh fruits & raw veggies are always best, of course.

Hey, congratulations! I've never heard of that medicine, how weird that it makes you lose weight really fast?

Weight Watchers is supposed to be the most successful plan out there because you eat real food and it is a lifestyle change. I'm just not so much of a joiner that way, maybe to my own detriment!
Yeah, I never wanted to join either. My friend finally copied the stuff for me and I started the Core Foods plan about a month ago. I've lost 9 lbs, and it hasn't really been that hard. In fact, as far as my past diets go, this is the easiest.
Here's the ranking:
Atkins: Way to restrictive and just plain unhealthy
South Beach: A little more variety of foods allowed, but still pretty restrictive
WW Core Foods: Some foods, like breads, processed flour, sugar, and all junk food are still a no-no, but you can eat any fruit or vegetable you want and as much from the Core Food list as you want. It's so easy! I love it because I hate being hungry and any little kind of junk food is a trigger for me. I have to stay off it totally in order to stay committed to my diet.
Anyway, I do think it's worth a try even if you don't go to meetings.
Also, let me say that I love Curves. I started back in January and feel and look so much better. So what if most of the people are much older than I am? I like to spend my 30 minutes there and be done with my exercise for the day.

Yeah, it was a shocker at first...the first 20 lbs melted away before I knew what was happening! The side effects are a little odd, but you get over them...mild numbness and dysmyopia.:]
