View Full Version : How would YOU induct stevie into the rock n roll hall of fame?

As fans I thought it would be intresting to see what different people would
say if they were the ones that was standing on that stage. What would
you say? Seeing that stevie would be getting in as a solo artist, would you
focus more on her solo years 1981-06 or would you go way back to the
buckingham-nicks years? I'm looking forward to reading everyone's take on it.

I would touch briefly on her time with Fleetwood Mac and her collaborations with people like Walter Egan, Kenny Loggins, John Stewart et al, but I'd make sure to throw in Buckingham-Nicks.

Then I'd delve mostly into her solo career, talking about songs like "Leather and Lace," "Edge of Seventeen," and "Stand Back" from her early days and emphasize her ability to be a survivor through cocaine rehab, detox from Klonopin, and her getting onto and off the Atkins Diet. I'd then spend a lot of time talking about her more recent work and her influence on other female rockers.

I'd try to do all of that in less time than Keith Richards did to induct ZZ Top.

I would start sobbing and have to be led off stage. Hopefully first I'd mention something about how everyone loves her so much, young and old, fat and thin, tall and short, man and woman, cat and dog, etc.

I'd say, "Stevie, let's the get the #$% out of here. This party sucks...and this crowd is weak. I'm not nice, so let's go up to my suite, listen to some AC/DC and the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs on my iTunes speakers and get LOADED on bourbon. I've got cigs, so don't worry about it!" Then I'd point to the crowd and say "and you, John Mayer, get up here cos you're about as rock and roll as this geriatric room can handle...which ain't saying much". Then I'd toss a flying V toward the table where U2 is sitting and say, in my worst possible Irish accent "Fer $@#'s sake lads, Ain't choo past yer sell-by date?"

Fall at her feet and worship her. Commanding everyone present to do the same.

I'm not sure what I would say that Sheryl Crowe hadn't already said during the RRHOF induction of Fleetwood Mac back in 1997 (or was it 98?). However, I'm not really a fan of Sheryl's (She sold out to Hollywood glamour and fashion stylists - she's not rock and roll anymore) - and I really hated it when she said something like "Stevie taught - that you could sleep with members of the band and still stay together"...which was horrible. I don't care what kind of friendship she and La Nicks have...that was distasteful...

and there were other members to discuss besides Stevie...but I digress...

I would just let the Greatest Women in Rock segment play. It summed it up pretty well and showed lots of great pictures.

Well, on second thought, I'd rework the voiceover and include BN, FM, but focus on her solo career.

Did she really? Yikes. That's seriously losing perspective ... it's about the music.

Slightly off-topic, but boy do I dread coming to this forum during any and all upcoming Novembers. If Stevie is ever inducted into the RRHOF as a solo artist, I don't think it's going to be quite a few years, and the hue and cry that will probably erupt here every year come nomination time will probably be more than I can bear.

Or maybe everyone will surprise me and realize that the RRHOF is meaningless and not care whether Stevie is let in...

It's not meaningless to Stevie, and it's fun watching your favorite person get the accolades you think they deserve. Sure, it's meaningless in the grand scheme of life, but the things they say about her and the reasons she will go in are real and true. It's not like she isn't accomplished, talented, successful, and loved throughout all the world. heh. So don't make me come over there. And yes, you should stay away, because we'll all be freaking our asses off. There will be hue, cry, and a hullabaloo to top it off.

(Oops! On edit: I see this has been posted already)

I agree with member upthread. I find the RRHOF pretty meaningless. It doesn't hold the same weight and prestige in my view as the Baseball HOF does.

(I have to say that - I'm a baseball fan... )

Until the R&RHoF rectifies their mistake and inducts Bob Welch as a member of Fleetwood Mac, the R&RHoF will remain a sham.

Just remember. Donna Jean Godcheaux (who?) got inducted into the R&RHoF as a member of Grateful Dead, yet Bob Welch wasn't considered worthy of induction as a member of Fleetwood Mac.

Injustice? You bet.

I'd have Petty and Sheryl do it. Maybe Mick too if he promised not to make it about himself. :p

Wouldn't it be bizarro-world if Lindsey did that induction? OMG...that would be the ultimate in forgiveness...

Just imagining it - I don't think it would ever happen that way.

Yes, clearly Bob Welch's exclusion is the only thing making the RRHOF a sham.

why was he considered unworthy?

It doesn't really have anything to do with "worth." The RRHOF is a commercial & political body like any other that puts on awards ceremonies. Their biggest concern is self-promotion.

So what's important is not who is "worthy" of induction (and, after all, the very idea of an institutionalized rock & roll hall of fame is pretty counterintuitive in and of itself anyway), but who is going to make for a prestigious looking list and (most importantly) a popular awards show broadcast. Fleetwood Mac were eligible for induction in 1993, when interest in the band was at an all-time low. It's not a coincidence that the Hall of Fame waited five years and then suddenly decided to induct them after The Dance was released and sold millions of copies. (And inducting The Eagles and The Mamas & The Papas the same year made for a nice California pop theme, don't you think?)

As for why Bob Welch (along with Weston, Walker, Burnette, Vito, Mason, Bramlett, and Brunning) wasn't inducted, simple: Nobody knows or cares who Bob Welch is anymore. The RRHOF had no reason to want to induct him. Actually, if I recall correctly, they didn't really care whether or not they inducted Peter, Jeremy and Danny, either, but Mick insisted. And it worked out anyway, since neither Jeremy nor Danny showed up, and Carlos Santana was also finally being inducted, so they got to publicize a joint performance of "Black Magic Woman."

Mick and the other inductees also could have insisted that Bob and the rest be inducted as well (that's what the Grateful Dead did - they simply demanded that more or less everyone who had ever been involved in a Grateful Dead project be inducted under the name of the Grateful Dead), but they didn't really care enough to. I'm sure there were some more complicated politics involved, but basically what it boils down to is that the members of the band who were inducted could have pressured the Hall of Fame into inducting everybody else if they'd really wanted to.

I was just using the words chiliD used...

and thanks for the explanation. I find that horrible. ALL members should have been inducted, IMO.

thanks, I didn't remember Peter Green being there....he hasn't aged as well as the rest of them...lol
I wouldn't be surprised if Stevie is not inducted as a solo artist since she was with FM....

That doesn't really have too much to do with it; John, Paul and George are all in there for their solo work (sorry, Ringo). As is Eric Clapton. And Michael Jackson, of course. If there's a substantial enough solo career, they're happy to induct people for that even if they've already been inducted as members of a band.* I mean, hey, if they can get big name to come back to their ceremony and boost ratings, why not? So it will just depend on whether or not they think that Stevie is enough of a draw, and that her catalogue is prestigious enough, to put her in there again. (I'm not counting on it anytime soon, unless she does something that puts her back into the public eye in a big way.)

*Interestingly, Janis Joplin has been inducted, but Big Brother & the Holding Company have not.

I agree...unfortunately I don't think she is appealing to the masses these days, although it would be a shame not to include her. And FM should have pushed to include everyone that had been in the band at one time or another ....

I really do not see STevie getting inducted anytime soon. I think it also helps if you have a label behind the scenes campaigning for you.....which I am not sure WB will be doing for her, come November.
