VAN HALEN Publicist 'Not Denying' Rumors Of 'Rock Star' Talent Search - Feb. 12, 2006

TMZ.com is reporting that VAN HALEN are in the market for a new lead singer, and the marketplace will be the upcoming reality show "Rock Star: The Series".

Last October, VAN HALEN reps vehemently denied the band would use "Rock Star" in a talent search for a new lead singer. The reps are now singing a different tune. VAN HALEN publicist Larry Solters told TMZ.com: "I'm not denying it. I'm not going to answer any questions about it."

Last year, the band INXS used "Rock Star" to find a new lead singer. J.D. Fortune won the competition, and the band is now making a comeback with a hit new album and a sold-out tour.

As for VAN HALEN, the group has had three lead singers since it hit the scene back in 1978: David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985, Sammy Hagar, who split in 1995, and Gary Cherone, who did just one album and tour with the band in 1998.

The next season of "Rock Star", produced by Mark Burnett for CBS, is scheduled to air during the summer. Neither Burnett nor CBS would comment on the VAN HALEN buzz.

If this is true it seems another US rockband has bit the dust...Of sellout-ville!!!

That's one I'll sit out. I wonder if Sammy H. and David Lee Roth are submitting audition tapes to the show right now?

Shoot, Van Halen hit rock bottom long ago. They've got nowhere to go but up at this point.

I think Mick and John should sign on for season 3 of this. They can make some money and hire a couple of people who actually want to be there.

Does anyone know what happened with them and Sammy? Was he also a prima donna or are the VH guys also difficult to get along with?

Well, I think all of the various Van Halen participants over the years can be exceedingly difficult to get along/work with.

As for why Hagar left, I don't think the full details are entirely clear, or at least everyone's got a different story. Apparently Hagar and Eddie started squabbling a lot during the writing/recording of "Humans Being" for the Twister soundtrack. The tension was compounded when Hagar wanted to put the band on the backburner for a while to spend more time with his wife, who was pregnant at the time. And on top of that, Hagar didn't really support the idea of releasing a greatest hits album, which the rest of the band wanted to do. How exactly this led to Hagar leaving the band, I'm not entirely sure, but Van Halen ended up recording two new tracks for the hits album with DLR instead of Sammy. Then everyone was all excited for a DLR-VH reunion, but of course all those usual tensions resurfaced, and after Diamond Dave made an ass of himself at the MTV Video Awards in 1996, they kicked him out again and hired what's his name for one album. Gary Cherone, from Extreme. That album didn't sell well, though, so Cherone was out, and since then, Van Halen's kind of been in limbo. I know Eddie has had a lot of health problems in recent years, but I think he's finally getting back to making music, although obviously Van Halen is still without a singer at the moment.

And then of course there was that beyond bizarre Hagar-Roth tour a couple summers back...

Who knew I knew so much about Van Halen?

:laugh: I bet you surprised yourself.

Anyway, any future incarnation of Van Halen will never live up to the David Lee Roth years. That goes even if D.L.R. were to join back up and it stuck; they could never recreate the magic. And I think Eddie Van Halen might be a bit of a dick, I mean, Sammy Hagar wanted to take time off to be with his wife and newly born child and Eddie was like, no, you'll be in the studio when I say so! Forget that guy, who needs that sh*t?

I really did! Although I admit, I did a little Googling to get some of the details.

I'm sure Eddie's a huge dick. When you go through three frontmen, odds are it's not the frontman who was the problem every time.

True. Although, I'm sure David Lee Roth's ego was the size of Texas. It goes without saying that two ultra-mega egos in one band can be quite explosive and unmanageable. I mean, look at Stevie and Lindsey!

Edward's alcohol abuse escalated to the point that the reunion tour ended prematurely (Another reason why his wife filed for divorce was his use of booze)....Michael Anthony now plays with Sammy Hagar in one of Sammy's side project and fronts his own part-time group (Cant recall Michael's new groups name.). Sammy sees no reason to continue since Edward will not seek treatment (Why tour if there's a chance the tour will end due to a DEATH of a member! Edward pretty much had a drunken breakdown at the last show, which ended with Sammy & Edward almost in fist-a-cuffs!!!)

There's "bets" going on in the metal circles that Edward Van Halen will end up dead from his abuse before he ever seeks treatment (One look at his participation at Dimebag's public ceremony is ALL the proof people need.)...He will die much the same way Steve Clark of Def Leppard died years ago.

That's really sad, but hey, if they guy won't get help what can be done? What happened at the public ceremony?

Edwards showed up "blazed-beyond-all"...I mean I can understand having a drink at the ceremony to honor a fallen comrade (Which is what BLS leader & Dime's bestfriend Zakk Wylde did) but just babbling on and looking like your trying out for the role of Keith Richards (Back in his ol' FUBAR'd days of the 70's) is quite sad.

I feel like Edward is heading towards the path the late-Steve Clark (Def Leppard's great guitarist) ended up on, Steve tried to seek help but even then nothing worked...His bandmates even mentioned that as a fact afterwards: "That sometimes you can't save a person...No matter how much you want to, they may be beyond saving"-Joe Elliott

I mean, hell, Edward survives a bout with oral cancer to only start up smoking again which led to his cancer in the first place...that is pretty f**ked up if ya ask me, Add to it his drinking binges and it seems he doesnt care that he was giving a second chance at having a life.

"You can lead a horse to water...but you cant make him drink it..."

An old friend of mine used to be their road manager during the Sammy years. He told me the Valerie used to fly out to the shows all the time trying to keep Eddie on the straight and narrow.

recent tour, but moreso since Wolfie went on the road with his father, she went to basically babysit her son.

I'm sure you're right. I'm sure she has long ago stopped suffering Eddie's addictions for the sake of her own sanity.

The new installment of the Rock Star TV show will feature the band SUPERNOVA looking for a singer. Supernova is TOMMY LEE, JASON NEWSTED (Voivod, ex-Metallica) and GILBY CLARKE (ex-Guns N’ Roses). The show will premiere this summer. MTV reports that Supernova may be in trouble over the use of the name because back in the early 90’s an Orange County band that was signed to Atlantic Records used the name Supernova.

the Hagar/Anthony show (aka "The Other Half", Which is exactly the title they are using) will consist of primarily Van Halen music from the days when Sammy Hagar was the singer.

Should be an interesting show...

That would actually be pretty cool, I think. Plus lawn seats are only $10 & they're doing some kind of all day party before the show.

I watched last season and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't care which band it is, as long as it's rock. I'll watch, simply for the great songs they perform. I'm so sick of the crap songs they sing on American Idol.

I agree. I read that some of last year's gang will be coming back for another shot, including Sweet Suzie McNeil....who I love. I actually like the concept of auditioning a singer for a "new" band better than the bastardization of INXS (which I fully admit I participated in).
