Singer had been slammed for driving with infant on lap

Thursday, February 9, 2006; Posted: 3:58 p.m. EST (20:58 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Britney Spears has taken responsibility -- well, some of it -- for driving with her baby son, Sean Preston, sitting in her lap.

"I made a mistake and so it is what it is, I guess," Spears tells "Access Hollywood" in an interview that was to air Thursday.

Several photos published Tuesday showed Spears driving her sport utility vehicle in Malibu, California, with her 4-month-old son perched on her lap rather than strapped into a car seat in the back seat.

The 24-year-old pop star said she did it because of a "horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi."

In response, X17, the agency that snapped the pictures, said they were snapped "in a very peaceful context, in which photographers exhibited no aggressive behavior."

"Being put in the situation that I was in, it was kind of bad with the paparazzi," Spears tells "Access Hollywood." "Last week, my mom and I went out and they were on us really bad, so you instinctively do what you need to do."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has said it won't pursue any charges.

Sean Preston, who was born in September, is Spears' first child. She is married to Kevin Federline, a former backup dancer.

could it be the fact that she runs around barefoot, is constantly wearing peasant shirts and cut off shorts, or maybe it's the lack of brush use...

she's a skank

WTF is wrong with her. She has more money than God, a career and the adoration of every man...so she marries a pig...spends all her money on him and totally ruined her career.

It would take a miracle for her to ever be who she was again. Mariah did it somehow and Cher did it and others did it but Britney...people really HATE her because before they were jealous and now they are just haters. People wanted her to fail...she was too perfect ...she lied to us a long time...and now no one wants her to succeed again...

Well maybe I am just speaking for myself.

But she looks bad and just seems to making all the wrong choices.

Kevin to Britney: Swing Baby Swing
As if she didn't have enough problems already, now comes word that Britney Spears' wayward hubby Kevin Federline wants an open marriage.

According to Life & Style magazine, KFed wants to swing baby! Insiders claim Kevin broke Britney’s heart when he told her that he wants an open marriage as it’s hard for him to be “with just one woman.” According to a friend, “This does not work for Britney – even broaching the subject crushed her. There is no way she wants to be involved with that. She is on the way towards depression.”

So how is she coping? Two words: Comfort Food! “There are empty KFC boxes all over her house, she can’t get off the last 15 pounds of baby weight, despite all kinds of pressure from Kevin to slim down. She has given up on her diet and exercise programme – in fact she booked some endermologie sessions at home, to reduce celluite – but when the technician showed up she was not in the mood and sent them away.”

Poor Britney can't catch a break. Memo to Britney: dump his sorry ass.

There was a rumored breakup on her birthday but obviously that didn't take. Hopefully she will get rid of him. Why she ever thought it was a good idea to get involved with someone who was involved and then marry him and have his baby is beyond me. She's an idiot.

I know what you're saying Janet. She used to be like teflon, she got a lot of criticism her way, but nothing stuck as demonstrated by her success. However, the tide has turned.

The above photo at the grammys? Again, she's an idiot. Seriously, she should be wearing something amazing and instead has on a nipple revealing frock? :distress:

Eh, these things happen. I'm more concerned about the fact that she was recently spotted driving with the top down on her convertible with him slumped over the the side in a carseat facing forward. :(

OK, first of all, the wind whipping through your hair may feel great, Brit, but I'm pretty sure it deosn't feel great on an infant's face. And second, the car seat should face the back of the vehicle, and your baby should be buckled in securely so that he isn't slumped over.

She's a pig, I f*cking hate her.

The other thing about this that I haven't seen mentioned in any of the coverage is that the baby was in full sun with no covering. That, coupled with the wind in the convertible, could easily and quickly dehydrate him. Maybe she put sunblock on him, but given all the other stuff I can't help but doubt that she did.

I'm still perplexed by the gun comment.

Good time to have a gun? What...for her kid to play with? That's about how responsible she seems.

She knows she's in the public eye...she knows people are following her/filming etc....you'd think that extra caution would be taken as per her kid...then again it's Britney Spears. Idiot.

I assume she's implying that the papparazzi caused her to be afraid & stressed & that's why she almost dropped her kid? So if she had a gun, she could protect herself? Hmmmmm...

Here's the thing - I don't like her. BUT I will say that these things happen all the time. Are you telling me none of your moms almost (or did :D ) accidentally drop you? Never, ever? She doesn't appear to be doing anything wrong in this case, and it must be hard to be under constant scrutiny when you're a first time parent. Mistakes are always made, but usually the whole world isn't witness.

Of course, concern is increasing about her parenting skills (or lack thereof) since the whole "fall from the highchair" thing, then the "driving with baby unrestrained in car"thing, then the "driving with baby facing forward in car" thing. Those seem to be bordering on negligence, IMO. So no wonder everyone's watching her with a magnifying glass.

Which is why, I'd think, at least in public she'd be extra vigilant - extra careful. Like...gee...using BOTH hands to hold the kid

I do realize that things like this happen everyday - to probably every parent...does any parent not have a story about their kid falling off something? It happens...but over and over again? It's worrisome...and I'm sorry - I gotta say, Federline produces some of the ugliest kids I've ever seen :sorry:

As a mother, there have been times when I've asked myself if I will ever get this child raised without him losing extremities, etc., etc. Until you've had a child it's probably hard for you to fathom all the things than can and will happen. Happens to the best of Moms and Dads out there everyday.

I say if I had to live my life in that fishbowl, I's be horrified. I also will say that the way she had her seat complied with the law and subsequent pics indicate she has turned it around.

I am not a huge fan of her - actually, she disinterests me. But, I think she means and meant no harm to her child and the media attention somewhat sickens me.
