I was reading the Dance appreciation thread, and a thought occured to me. I can understand people's reasons for wanting more variety sometimes, but here's how I see it. I waited for 20 years to see Fleetwood Mac live, and the Dance represented my first opportunity to do that. How would I have felt if I was a fan of let's say the Beatles or Led Zeppelin, bands where there's no chance that there will ever be a reunion. Let's all be grateful we had that opportunity.

Good point, but you have to appreciate an opinion of someone like ChiliD, who's seen em live like 100 times since the latter 18th century.

Ok, then, that just proves my point of Fleetwood Mac being a nostalgia act. Sure, you saw Mick, John, Lindsey, Stevie & Christine together, but, you didn't see them in "their prime"...the five of them were not really reuniting to do something new, they were trying to RECREATE something that couldn't be recreated. (Point #1 to why the Beatles never reunited when they could have...you can't repeat something that is a one-time phenomenon).
It is the same thing with me & Cream. I didn't see them the first time around back in the '60's. Was I dying that they reunited? Yes. Did I want to see them? Yes. Were they doing anything beyond being a nostalgia act? No. But, I knew that going in. I wasn't led on with any allusions that they just might be doing something new. (as I was with The Dance) Did they present their songs in new & different ways? A couple of songs, yes; mostly, no (other than they were considerably shorter and played at a significantly lower volume). Did they rake in cash? Yep...and for good causes, too. Jack Bruce was hurting for cash due to his illness and Eric still has to fund his Crossroads drug rehab center. Didn't hear of Fleetwood Mac funnelling a portion of their profits into charitable causes other than "family income".

Yeah but Fleetwood Mac did have new songs...My Little Demon, Temporary One, Bleed to Love Her, and Sweet Girl....AS WELL AS a new arrangement of The Chain (without the capo!)....Big Love and Go Insane obviously...and the never before heard live Silver Springs. That's a pretty far cry from not doing, or at least attempting to do something fresh. And from *this* fans standpoint...the Dance sounds really tight to me. Despite all the arguments you can get into about overdubs, etc....they looked good, and the sound was killer. I much prefer that "version" of the band than say, Tango in the Night era. Based on all that, I'd say The Dance was much LESS of a nostaligia-feast than Cream's recent re-uniting. Regrettably, I missed those shows too.

For the record, carrying over from the other thread, I agree with most of this. While I'll always bemoan Fleetwood Mac's insistence to adhere to the same script night after night after night, I think The Dance was relatively fresh and interesting, in the context of a reunion tour, and in the context of having the same setlist every night. Four new songs, an old rare B-side and a handful of new arrangements made for a pretty interesting mix. My chief complaints are with the SYW tour, which I think was sub-par even in the context of playing the same thing every night.

Nope...they'd played it a number of times during the Rumours tour (even documented on a few bootlegs), but, alas, they dropped it after a few shows.
That's a pretty far cry from not doing, or at least attempting to do something fresh.
If the video of the soundstage concert(s) was "it", then yeah...they attempted something fresh. But, after seeing the subsequent tour, they became stale INCREDIBLY quickly...they should've just set up a screen on the stage and projected the soundstage show up there. Yes, Lindsey WAS (and still is) that robotic.

Interesting. I didnt know that. Regardless...even that song aside, there was much to "The Dance" that allowed it to climb higher than nostalgia package. As far as I'm concerned...the "Time" era of the group was more that than the Dance era. *prepares himself for unholy wrath of Chili*

.
were they recreating something?? I guess they just reunited to have fun, make money, and sing and play very good for their fans. I think they did it, and did it well.
The magic will never be the same, I know. And that's why Beatles, Thompson Twins, Abba and Police never reunited again (as I read exactly from those bands), not even for a "The Dance"-type show/tour. They just don't want. But Fleetwood Mac did want. So I enjoyed it.
If I compare TD with other past shows, sure The Dance looses. Stevie can't sing Rhiannon with the same energy as in the LIVE album, impossible in her fifties (just an example). But I think that wasn't the point. They didn't want to say.. Hey, the Mac is back like in 1979!!. The phenomenom is back!
Did you guys expected a phenomenom? I didn't. (I wished it, but didn't expect it).
No, I guess it was just.. "The Mac is back for a while, enjoy it!"
Agnetha doesn't want to reunite not even for few shows, she said it wouldn't be like in the 70s so we would be dissapointed. Believe me, I WOULDN'T BE DISSAPOINTED!!! And what would I pay to see Sting wth Police again!!

great example. I've heard rumors of what they've been offered to perform and it's outrageous. I'd love to see them...and think of all the fans that would love to see them. Well, at first I didn't find it bizarre but... weird. Songbird was always the last song. A very good song to end. But I guess they wanted to show us the 5 members together ending the show. Maybe they already knew it was the last time the 5 will play together live.

Using your logic, John McVie is an unknown. I don't believe that chiliD was saying they were AS famous or popular as Lindsey and Stevie. But, fans of Fleetwood Mac knew Billy. He had been on a fairly successful studio album (at least by the standards of non-Rumours incarnations), two compilation albums, and a concert video that sold well enough to eventually get re-released on DVD, not to mention music videos shown on MTV and VH-1. So, saying he was an UNKNOWN is a bit of a stretch.
Dave Mason is in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Traffic, so therein lies the flaw of your logic. Unknowns don't just get into the Hall. Hell, even well knowns dong get into the Hall (just ask Bob Welch). "Feelin' Alright" is a rock staple. "We Just Disagree" is an AOR staple. Dave played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower," which is considered to be one of THE greatest rock songs ever. His "Alone Together" album has always been an album held in VERY high regard. Lindsey Buckingham even credited that album for giving him ideas for songwriting.
Bekka is/was unknown with audiences in general, but such is the Bramlett legacy. They've always been the musician's musician. They've always been more the insiders who make stars shine rather than be the actual stars. Look at all of the artists who Bekka has worked with (her parents' list is even more stunning...THEY were the pair that convinced Eric Clapton that he could be a lead vocalist!). Plus, from everything I've read, Bekka has actually turned down huge album deals for fear of being overhyped. That may seem silly to you or me, but remember, she grew up around VERY famous, A-list musicians, and maybe saw things from a completely different perspective.

Really, the only songs they HAVE to do are "Don't Stop" (when a song is used a theme song for a successful presidental campaign, you're going to have to play it, like it or not) and "Go Your Own Way" (really, their only "fist-in-the-air" anthem). I could personally live without hearing those songs (especially Stevie singing on "Don't Stop"), but I think more people in crowds would be demanding their money back if they didn't get at least those songs. Those two songs aren't going anywhere, so it's really not even worth discussing.
And, honestly, I can live with "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Big Love," "Tusk," "Gypsy," and "Sara." I mean, those WERE the hit songs, and I can respect their decision to play them. But, I could do without every other song from "Fleetwood Mac" and "Rumours" that get shoved down our throats (regardless of who's in the band) every tour. And really, they COULD do a good job of changing up the set-list and not having the canned speeches.

See, I can understand in a way some people's disdain of the whole Rumours "phenomenon." It was more than ubquitous in the late 70's. I even remember Lindsey complaining about that. For me it's different. I got inot them at such a young age I was never caught up in all that. I know it seems funny, but to me Fleetwood Mac are like a bunch of old friends I visit everyday.:)
