This just popped into my little pea-brain so I thought I'd put it out there. We all talk about what we were doing when momentus events in history happened. Here's a few of mine. Feel free to add your own, or expound on the ones I present:

Mount St. Helens: I remember getting up in the morning and seeing this on the news, and not believeing what I saw. A few days later I picked up some ash off our driveway and I still have it in a jar. And I live in Minnesota.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was home sick from school with terrible flu watching The Price Is Right when they broke into coverage to show the shutttle launching. All of a sudden there was this POOF and no one knew what happened. I was stunned.

O.J Simpson: I remember I was on a baseball trip and the group I was with was getting ready to go to a game in CLeveland when this guy with a portable tv on the bus yelled "EVERYBODY COME CHECK THIS OUT!!!" We all crowded around the tv for the infamous Bronco chase.

9/11: Getting up for work in the morning and turning on the radio and hearing all this national stuff going on, I rushed downstairs and the first thig I saw on teh TV was the south tower falling.:(

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997. I was at work on the overnight shift when this radio djstarted taking about Fleetwood Mac getting back together. I had waited for this for 20 years. I couldnt believe it! hat an exciting moment!!

Mount St. Helens: Wasn't born yet. But my dad was at a Grateful Dead show.

Space Shuttle Challenger: Wasn't born yet. My dad was probably waking up after a Dead show, tho.

O.J Simpson: I was camping and it was hotter than hell. We saw it on the news when we got home.

9/11: Our school went into lockdown. I had to stay in Math an extra 45 minutes.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: Mom wanted the new CD. :p

The Red Sox won the World Series: I was in my bed, weeping a little bit as Keith Foulke fielded a grounder. :distress:

Mount St. Helens: must be too young, have no idea what this is about

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was six or seven so I don't remember it happening.

O.J Simpson: I was at my grandmother's after school and we, like everyone else, sat, glued to the TV

9/11: I was running late for class and I saw the chair of my dept sitting in the student lounge with her head in her hands and I asked her what was wrong and she said a plane had crashed. I figured it was a cropduster so I went on upstairs to the foreign language center and EVERYONE was in there. I sat at a TV, put on headphones and cried like a baby. Went to class and really got the whole scoop - classes were cancelled.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: I was babysitting my cousin. We had just gotten back from swim practice and I saw the ad on TV. Never even knew who they were but liked Stevie's look. Told my aunt, she said we must watch it so we did and the rest is history

Mount St. Helens: I was about 2 or 3 when this happened. I do not remember.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I just remember talking about it so much afterwards and the magazines. It chilled me and gave me one of my first glimpses of tragedy. I was 8 and in 2nd grade.

O.J Simpson: I remember waking up and hearing the news...I remember the Bronco chase. I think this happened right when school was ending...I think it was June 1993 right? I would have been a freshman. I also remember the verdict...I was a sophomore then and we took a tv into the classroom to see what would happen. WE all knew he'd get off and he did.

9/11: I will NEVER FORGET. It was a gorgeous Tuesday morning. I woke up late...around 11. I worked at night and I worked the night before so I slept in. I was really in a good mood so I wrote a few people and just said "Hi" and that life was great. No one could believe what I was saying and told me to watch the news. I turned it on and turned it right off. I went into the shower and came out. I watched again and started to understand...as the day progressed--I saw the people I loved and went to work. I couldn't concentrate so I was delivering pizzas and just listening to Opie and Anthony in between Philly's 1060 as they talked about buildings falling down STILL. Then on my way home I listened to the Presidential Address ( I remember the streets I was driving home) and then I went to a bar just so I didn't have to be alone ( I was terrified it wasn't over...we all were) and I just sat and watched tv as it showed it over and over and over. I went home and at 3 AM I heard military planes overhead ( I live in NJ) and had nightmares for a week. That was of the saddest days ever.

Fleetwood Mac reunion: I wasn't even a fan. I was 19 and I remember seeing ads for the Dance on tv. They used the beat of the Chain. At that moment ( I have goosebumps-I was in my basement) I was like....what is that ( I asked my mom, she said they sucked LOL...so then I just had to love them)??? I never looked back. I was OBSESSED! Got to see 2 Dance shows and started the Ledge. 1997 was a good year.

It was a really hot summer and it was just starting to be fall. It was the most gorgeous day and no humidity. I just remember how blue the sky was. All those people must have thought the same thing. It should have been raining...

Good topic, David.

Mount St. Helens: N/A

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was about five and just barely remember it. Christa McAuliffe (sp?) was the only person I knew with my name at the time.

O.J Simpson: I was in high school and watched the Bronco chase at home. Later, I remember watching the verdict come down on the TV in one of the classrooms during school. It was during lunch hour.

9/11: Senior year of college. A guy walks into my 9:30 Medieval lit class and says the World Trade Center has been "bombed." I had to sit through earth science afterward (the instructor said no need to cancel class  ). I didn't get to a television until afternoon.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: I think I saw an ad on MTV. I was really excited because I thought they were done.

Berlin Wall: I think we watched some of it on TV. I was in fourth grade, I believe.

Princess Di: My mom came and woke me up about six on a Sunday morning to tell me.

Excellent topic.

Mount St. Helens: no memory of it whatsoever

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was home sick from school, too! I was watching TV, as well, and was watching the launch. It was a big thing because of Christa McCulloch (sorry if I spelled her name wrong). It happened around 11:20am if I remember correctly - I saw it blow up, and then sat there in front of the TV until I finally had to go to bed around 11pm. I must have seen it explode close to 50 times. A little traumatic for a kid. But I just had so much hope that maybe, maybe they weren't all dead. :distress: Anyway, I went to bed, and had nightmares about it all night. I've never forgotten that.

O.J Simpson: Was working in TV, so I was in front of the screen watching. And was stunned.

9/11: Was getting ready to go to work - and the radio said they were getting reports about a small plane hitting the World Trade centre. I work in news, so I thought, I better go turn on CNN and see what's up. So I saw the second plane hit, and I said out loud to no one "oh my God oh my God oh my God." I knew it was an attack - and all I could think was "I ahve to get to work." I drove in listening to the radio coverage, watching the people around me in their cars listening. We were all about to go into a tunnel when the first tower started to fall, and a bunch of us hit the brakes so we wouldn't lose the signal. Again, a moment I will never forget.

Berlin Wall: too young - didn't really register

Diana's Death: was watching CNN on the Saturday night when they broke in and said she had been in a car accident. I was supposed to go out - but didn't. I watched steadily - and I remember realizing when there was no update for more than an hour or so that she was dead. I knew it before they announced it. I watched the coverage til about 4am, then got up and sat in front of the TV all day and all night Sunday.

One for my fellow Canadians: Pierre Trudeau's death: I was actually on the air with the 6pm newscast that I produced, and it came as an alert on the wires. I remember gasping, and then I went into my anchor's ear, and said "Trudeau has died." And we threw out the rest of our newscast, and did the next 40 minutes live, doing phone interviews, and even got a guest in live. Luckily, our anchor was a Trudeau-file. She was brilliant.

[QUOTE=GypsySorcerer]Good topic, David.

Mount St. Helens: in my room in my childhood home watching TV.

Space Shuttle Challenger: Hanging out in the hang out place in college.

O.J Simpson: Drinking in a bar in my beloved New Orleans

9/11: at work and thinking my building was next. I then took the train home and it was SILENT in the train car.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: It was on Entertainment tonight and I thought - please let her be able to sing on key - and she did.

Berlin Wall: Studying.

Princess Di: In Michigan at a resort and going with my old roomate to a huge party and my mother calls my drunken a$$ to tell me Diana had been in a wreck - I was like "the media distorts EVERYTHING - blah blah blah" - then she said the crawl said Diana was dead. What a sad night.

Mt Saint Helens: I dont remember where I was or what I was doing, but I do remember the edge of your seat news we were getting, especially about the coots on the Mountain who refused to leave. It was like "oh my God! dont they care they're going to die?" I remember the stories of the cows in the pastures covered in soot, and the mud that followed when the rain started...such a mess! I still go to sites that follow the growth of the newest lava dome, wondering if we will see the birth of a new Mountain, so interesting! Btw, I think I was either late teens, or 20 something for this...it would help if an actual DATE was printed! I cant remember EVERYTHING LOL!

Challenger: I turned on the news one morning and caught the launch right at the moment before it blew up. I saw the friends and family who were in the bleachers at the launch pad looking up into the sky with awe and wonder and then you could see the exact moment when it blew, they looked confused, like "is this part of the launch?" and then when everyone figured it out, they just all crumpled...it is sooooooo tragic. My heart was heavy for days...and all they kept talking about was Crista, the schoolteacher, the first civilian to go up and how sad that this had to happen...I dont remember the exact year but I think I was in my 30's...

OJ Simpson: I remember watching the film footage of him with Al, cruising the freeways of LA, threatening to shoot himself and all the cop cars behind him....to me, that just SCREAMED guilt. then, you hear about all the stuff that was found in his golf bag and my mom told me that Nicole's breasts were sliced open, and the implants taken out, and that OJ's attitude was: "I paid for them, Im keeping them!" Such a sick sick man, and yet he went free.....

Berlin Wall: again, I dont remember what I was doing or where I was but the image of the people tearing the wall down by torchlight and all the cheering, and the feeling that there was hope finally for that part of the world, I'll never forget it...(again, a DATE would be helpful!)

Diana: This one I do remember. It was nighttime when I heard the news, I was just stunned. Stunned. I didnt stop grieving for months. Finally, I was able to access an online memory book and write something and then I felt a bit better. But I believe the world lost something very special that day...This was while I was a student at Chico State, late 90's, which would have been my early to mid 40's I believe....

9/11....THAT still gives me goosebumps. My mom called me that morning and told me that the twin towers were under attack and I sat there and saw all the chaos and noise and dust and the people jumping out of the building...and when they finally went down, I was covered in goosebumps. I get them now when I remember that scene. The swiftness of the Towers' fall and the knowledge that all the folks inside were doomed, has never ever left my mind's eye. I can see it still. And it filled me with an absoLUTE hatred for the people responsible. I am UNAPOLOGETIC about that. I realize that these are harsh words, but I mean them to be. They are all the more harsh when I say that never before had I felt such a sense of anger toward ANYONE. I remember thinking then that this event very likely signaled the beginning of the "end times" and Im NOT an apocalyptic type of person....but I felt like I could see the handwriting on the wall with this strike, as if it were the Muslim gauntlet being thrown down...

Mount St. Helens: Don't remember

Space Shuttle Challenger: Was in high school...Didnt see it, but heard it mentioned between classes. Didnt really affect me since I have no interest in any type of space travel and/or science...Sorry.

O.J Simpson: Flipped through the channels and watched as OJ was mentioned as a suspect in his wife's murder...Then later sitting back watching the police chase while cheering on OJ (I believed he was innocent until after the trial was way over...Do I believe he is guilty? Hell yes he was!!!)

9/11: Woke up nauseated, "worshipped the porcelain God"...Went back to sleep without turning on the TV (Which is a rarity....Cause usually when I wake up sick I stay up and watch TV). Didnt know anything until a friend of mine from GA called and told me to turn on the TV, "Which channel?" I replied..."Any" was her answer.

April 19,1995-Was listening to 100.5 KATT FM as Rick & Brad (The morning crew) advertise that the Governor Frank Keating was going to declare April 19th an honorary holiday ("Burger Day") to raise money for a charity....When all of a sudden the station went off the air and returned moments later stating that they felt something like an earthquake in downtown OKC, and that they can see smoke and are hearing fire sirens racing towards downtown OKC.

I turned on the TV to see what the world happened and the local channels were showing smoke billowing from a building in downtown from a distant camera miles away. Turned it to CNN which was reporting that a "Natural Gas" explosion had occurred in downtown OKC and they would soon be going to OKC live, So instead of waiting for CNN to show the image/info, I turned it to KWTV Channel 9 which had their news chopter in the air over the building that was smoking, to only show the front facade of this building absolutely blownoff and the parking lot across the street ablaze, People were shown running towards the building to help out as best they could.

The building was the Alfred Murrah federal building in downtown OKC that was destroyed beyond recognition...Whereas the national news outlets only paid attention to OKC for the next couple of weeks all 3 of our local national affiliates (KFOR Channel 4-NBC, KWTV Channel 9-CBS & KOCO Channel 5-ABC) showed the aftermath for the next month on a 24 hour a day basis.

I will never forget CNN inaccurately reporting "scuttle-butt" as fact in regards to the Murrah Bombing without seeking the truth(How in the hell could a 747 hit the Murrah Building and miss the surrounding buildings such as the 20+ story Regency Towers apartment building? Man, CNN lost any respect I had towards 'em after April 19th.)

Mount St. Helens: 1980- I was 12 and I have no memory of this at all.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I stayed home from school that day, too! I was watching TV in my bedroom when it happened.

O.J Simpson: I was managing a restaurant, and we all went into the bar to turn the big screen TV on when the verdict was read. I remember when it was read we all gasped, and some lady said, "What the F&CK?!"

9/11: I was an inside sales rep for a beer distributor. I used to call on accounts (over the phone) and one of my customers said, "Janet, have you turned on the radio?" When I said no, he told me to get off the phone and go turn on a TV, that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I, like everyone else, thought it was an accident. I went into the sales room, and there were about 20 people in there staring at the TV in silence. It was so surreal.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac reunion in 1997: I don't remember hearing about it, but when The Dance aired, I was like a little kid! My step-son was little then, and asleep on the couch. I accidentally had the volume turned WAY up, so when we turned the TV on, The Chain blared and woke him up.

Berlin Wall: I have no memory of this either. Which makes no sense because I was 21, for Pete's sake!

Diana's Death: I was at the beach that week-end.

I want to edit to add that I remember where I was when John Lennon was shot. We were sitting on my parent's bed watchng TV (it was the only TV in the house). As soon as it was announced that he had been shot, we (my little brother and older sister) started crying! My mom came in and she started crying too and called my dad at work. Isn't that weird?

Mount St. Helens: Wasn't born yet.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was only 4 when that happened, but I know when I saw the footage years later when I was old enough to comprehend what had happened I had goosebumps.

O.J Simpson: I was in my second year in highschool and I remember we talked about it a lot during lunch breaks.

9/11: Well, it was 3 pm here when it happened, and I was riding the bus home from college when my sister sent me an sms, telling me a plane had crashed into the WTC. I thought it was an accident at first, since she didn't say anything else, and that she sent it to me because she knew I was going to NYC next Spring and she wanted to scare me (because I was afraid of flying). Then I walking into the living room just as the second plane hit the tower and then it hit me instantly. This is serious. We stayed glued to the tv for the rest of the day and well into the night. I even called in sick to work, because I was literally sick. I just couldn't believe what happened. So, so sad. :(

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: I wasn't as into Fleetwood Mac back then as I am now, and the media hype on this side of the ocean wasn't as big as in the States, but they did mention something about it on MTV back then, and I remember thinking "How cool!". I was totally sold the day I saw the Dance dvd.

Berlin Wall: I was seven and I remember my dad waking me up, telling me I had to watch this, cause this was history.

Princess Di: My dad was actually ironing, and it was a beautiful sunny day. He always had the tv on when he was doing chores like that, and I just walked in from visiting a friend when the extra news bulletin aired.

Mount St. Helens: I was 5, I don't remember it at all.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was 9, in school, I remember seeing one of my teachers upset in the cafeteria. They told us about it, then I saw more on TV when I got home. BTW - I just found out that the launch of Challenger was NOT broadcast live - CNN had just started, and TV didn't routinely cover NASA stuff anymore. So I guess what everyone saw was the replays all day long.

O.J Simpson: I came home from school & my dad was watching the chase on TV

9/11: Etched into my brain forever. I was at work at my desk, the job where I worked with mentally ill teenagers. A coworker came in & said "Someone said that a plane hit the WTC." I said (I **** you not) "what the f*ck are you talking about, Sharon? How the hell would that happen? Who told you this? What an idiot. Like that could ever happen! Why would a plane be flying so low? They must have misheard." I thought it was an accident and couldn't wrap my head around the fact that a plane could have hit one of those tall skinny buildings with such precision. Then someone came in 7 told us about the second tower being hit.

We raced into the library & turned on CNN. We stodd there in silence with the kids, staring. I know exactly who I was near & who I talked to. Tyler (kid) said to me "wat's going to happen? Will they be able to put the fire out." I looked at Dennis (coworker) and didn't know what to say. It was at that moment that I realized they would collapse. When the first one did, I said "Oh God, no" and felt myknees give way. I sat down quickly & stared in disbelief.

We turned off the TV so the kids wouldn't see any more. I watched CNN constantly for the next few days, then went to the grocery store & stocked up on water & canned goods in a frenzy. Mark thought I was nuts. I was terrified of terrorists walking up & down the streets blowing **** up. I still am, if I think about it too much. So I don't think about it.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: Saw The Dance at my cousin's house, found out they were coming on the radio.

Princess Di:At work with my developmentally disabled kids. They were asleep, I was in the living room charting & watching TV.

is historic as the day the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired....But the Murrah disaster happened on April 19th as Tim McVeigh's first shot in a "Declaration of War" on the United States that he hoped would start a revolt against the government. Interesting that a white-supremist, who was put to death the early morning of April 19,1995, said in the death chamber as his last words "A new Declaration of War against the US Government will be seen by all this morning...", Did he know in advance what was coming or was he just "sabre-rattling"??

I clearly remember a Dallas/Ft.Worth TV reporter, in the days following April 19,1995, showing an interview with Timothy McVeigh (Near the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco pre April 19,1993) in which he was selling items/passing out literature showing that the US government needs to be stopped...His words to that reporter (In regards to the whole standstill in Waco and the fear the government would "retaliate" against those inside with David Koresh) were to the point "Payback is due...Hell is on the way". He delivered his "payback" 2 years to the day later...

Interesting is the T-shirt that Tim McVeigh had on, when he was arrested for a traffic violation/weapon charge, Had the following quote on it:

Tree of Liberty "...the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Thomas Jefferson

Mary, the current activity at St Helens began on March 15, 1980 with a series of earthquakes leading up to the big eruption on May 18, 1980. There were several more large eruptions that summer.

Here's a link for info on the current eruption...

Here's a link to the volcano cam... doesn't work very well during the winter because of bad weather... but it's pretty cool when the weather is nice...

Mount St. Helens

Can't remember

Space Shuttle Challenger

I was getting ready for work when my boyfriend called me and told me the space shuttle had blown up. A few nights before when we were watching the news, he blurted "That thing's going to blow up."

O.J Simpson
The chase? I was watching it on a big screen tv in a bar that I worked in at the time.

The Fleetwood Mac reunion in 1997

Sitting glued to my chair watching MTV and then almost falling off at the end of Silver Springs.

9/11

I was getting dressed for work and getting ready to take daughter to school. I think Diane Sawyer was on the tv and by the images and the first few words I heard, I knew something was very wrong. My daughter burst into tears.

Mount St. Helens: (May 18, 1980) I wasn't even conceived until three months after this happened!

Space Shuttle Challenger: (January 25, 1986) I would have been about four and half... Since 1/25 is my dad's birthday, we were probably doing something to celebrate.

O.J Simpson: Are we talking low-speed chase or acquittal? The murders happened in the summer of 1994, which was between my 8th and 9th grade years, so I was probably enjoying my few days of freedom before starting high school. The verdict was announced during my Beginning Drafting class in 9th grade (we listened on the radio). All I remember is thinking that the man was guilty as sin and not wanting to say anything because the rest of my classmates were celebrating the acquittal.

9/11: I vaguely remember being in the middle of trying to get ready for work and seeing it on television with the sound turned off. I didn't really know what was going on as I was running late that morning but as the day went on, it was the main topic of dicussion from both coworkers and clients. I felt a weird combination of both shock and relief about the whole situation. I was, of course, shocked that such a terrible thing had happened in one of our nation's biggest cities but also relieved that I did not know any of the victims and was spared any personal grief.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: I remember seeing a half-page article (I think it was called "Checking in with Fleetwood Mac") in Rolling Stone Magazine that talked about the upcoming reunion. At the time I still didn't really know anything about the band and Stevie was still little more than "that one blonde chick that sang with Tom Petty" ("Lindsey Buckingham? Who is she?") but I was excited about it because I had picked up a copy of "Bella Donna" maybe a year or two before that and had loved it.

9/11: It was like 4 p.m. in Greece and I was cleaning my appartment when my boyfriend called to tell me to turn on the tv because a plane had just crushed into the WTC. I remember that I was so stunned that at first I could not really believe it was actually happening, so I think I went on cleaning (with the TV on) until I realised that it was true and then I watched the news the whole day.

Berlin Wall: I was about 13 and I was watching it on the news with my parents. There is no single event (political) that has ever had such an impact on me. I visited Berlin (at last!) when I was 25 ang I got hundreds of pictures of what is remained of it and also a little piece of the wall. Still, whenever I watch a documentary about the fall, I cry every single time. I am totally in love with this city. I wish I had been there, along with the people who tore it down.

Princess Diana: I was at home, I woke up and my aunt who was staying with us told me what happened,as I was making myself some coffee. I remember that I stayed home watching the news the whole day.

What a great topic, David. It's always interesting to realize what was happening for you during these pivotal times.

Mount St. Helens: I didn't even exist yet. My mom told me about how she remembered watching the news about it though.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was barely a year old, so no memory of that either.

O.J Simpson: I was still relatively young (about 8 or 9) when the "Bronco chase" and all of that happened, so I didn't know what was happening until my parents started watching the trials. I remember the day they announced the verdict, I was in the library at school and the librarian had the TV on. She was relatively shocked that he was acquitted, although I had the feeling he would be.

9/11: Being as I live in the Mountain time zone, I was barely getting up for school by the time the first tower had been hit. I was still kind of asleep when my mom came in to wake me up, and the first thing she said to me was "A plane just hit the World Trade Center." I was awake like THAT, and I ran to turn on my TV. I'll never forget it though, in my 1st period class we were all gathered around the TV and bawling our heads off. Naturally, classes were cancelled for the rest of the day.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997: I remember seeing an ad for it on MTV, but I wasn't into The Mac at that time. That was my Hanson/Spice Girls phase....

The fall of the Berlin Wall:Surprisingly, I remember this, despite being 4 years old at the time. My parents were watching ABC and they had some big breaking news thing about how the travel restrictions had been lifted, and they showed all the Germans dancing on the wall and passing from East to West. I didn't really get why it was such a big deal though, still being 4 years old and all. I just wanted to watch Head Of The Class, lol.

When Princess Diana died: The night that it happened, I was actually staying the night over at my friend Sean's house in Boise. We heard no mention of anything on the news or radio, but then when I got home my mom was like "Princess Diana was killed in a car wreck last night!" and I just remember being so shocked. I remember crying when I watched the funeral, I thought it was so tragic that she lost her life like that.

I recall seeing a mention of the Columbine shootings too, that's another memorable one for me... I remember coming home from school and my dad was watching the news, and they were talking about a shooting in Littleton, but hadn't mentioned a school name or anything yet. The next day all classes were cancelled, and all we talked about in class were the shootings and how we could prevent them at our school. I still get depressed on April 20th sometimes, just thinking of how tragic it was for those kids' friends and family.

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was home sick from school with terrible flu watching The Price Is Right when they broke into coverage to show the shutttle launching. All of a sudden there was this POOF and no one knew what happened. I was stunned.

I don't have time to respond to all of them but this one grabbed me because-- eerily!-- this is EXACTLY what i was doing that day!! I never stayed home sick, but that day i did, and was watching good ol' Bob Barker in my dad's study. How wierd, it's like we lived parallel lives that day!

Mount St. Helens: eating breakfast w/ my granny, she always, always had the news on, i remember worrying about all the people at the bottom that were devestated & killed~

Space Shuttle Challenger: i was a senior in highschool & my economis class was watching the take off live when it happened, it was so sad & i remember people crying the rest of the day~

O.J Simpson: i used to be a stock loan processor for our local newspaper's employee credit union & i always had a radio on my desk, my desk was also on the way to the smoking break room~ i remember alot of african american people would come by & listen to my radio & say hi when they were walking past to smoke & about 30 of the wrkers came & gathered arond my desk cuz they knew a verdict was in & when it came down not guilty, they all started freaking out, but not cuz they were happy, the kept saying that MOFO (insert real naughty word here) is so guilty, they were all pissed off~ it was a surrreal moment~

9/11: i run a home daycare & 98% of the babies i watch are military, there is a huge airforce base less than a mile from me~ i always watch the TODAY show & was watching it live when at 1st they just thought it was an accident & then i watched the other building being hit & all that was to follow, the base where i live is 1 of the places they brought bush that day, we have atratcom here & he came to one of the underground bunkers so to speak here~ that was one of the most saddest things i have ever witnessed~

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997. i saw something about it on MTV late night~ i started to cry, i was so excited!!!~

The fall of the Berlin Wall: not sure, i remember it happening, but not sure what i wasdoing~

When Princess Diana died: watching tv & having some beer w/ the hubby, 1st they reported about her accident, & then a few hours later that she had died, i remember throwing the remote, breaking a vase & saying "no no no"~ it was very sad~ i also remember getting up at 1 am my time to watch her entire funeral live~ i will neverforget it~

Thanks for the links! I went to the one with the volcano cam but all I saw was a fuzzy picture of green and purple? still, I think Mt Saint Helens is a fantastic opportunity for us to see vulcanism within our lifetimes....and the Cascade range is so active its almost scary

okay, kids are on the bus, i have a minute now--

Mount St. Helens: I have absolutely no idea what i was doing for this one.

Space Shuttle Challenger: like David-- I was home sick from high school, watching Price is Right on the couch.

O.J Simpson: I was a Head Start teacher in Trenton NJ (urban area, primarily African American). Someone shouted the verdict down the hall from the bus office, and suddenly there was whooping and high fiving and general happiness from most everybody. I was stunned. I kept pretty much quiet, along w/ a few others who thought he was guilty as sin. Being 1 of 2 'white people' in the building, I had never really felt any sort of major 'cultural divide' until that day. really weird.

9/11: I was home w/ my toddler and preschooler, they were watching Barney. Marty called and told me a plane hit one of the towers, then called again and said another one hit. Couldn't really watch TV myself as i didn't want to traumatize my daughter. tried to have a normal day, as you have to do when you have little kids-- took them to the library where a librarian suddenly called out "Oh my God, it fell." I truly didn't think she meant the building. I had to go ask her. Took the kids out to the deserted nearby enclosed park, let them run around oblivious while i cried; I kept looking into that amazingly blue sky, wondering if maybe I'd start seeing smoke from it over in NY; Marty had said he could see it from where he worked. And I remember the fighter planes flying over later that day, really low, like janet said. very very scary day.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac re-union in 1997: Got an e-mail from John that they were all talking and that he hoped it would happen. To this day that e-mail is framed in my basement. :woohoo:

Berlin Wall: Just watched it on TV....

Princess Di: At our apmt in Edison NJ (Janet, you were there :) )-- Marty got up early and found out, and then came and woke me up and told me.

Mount St. Helens: Not at all. I was too young. But I do remember later comments about it

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was at university, in classes. I knew about it there and was in shock

O.J Simpson: Not an important new in my country.

9/11: Getting up for work in the morning and turning on the TV!! I didn't know what kind of plane it was, a little one, an air force, a jet, etc. Then it came the 2nd crash, and I knew everything in an instant. It had to be terrorsim. I was in shock for several days.

Hearing about the Fleetwood Mac renunion in 1997. Can't remember but sure it was checking the PENGUIN at work. God bless internet!!!

Speaking of the renunion in '97, I couldnt decide which cicty I wanted to be the first to see them in, so I chose Cincinnati Ohio, October 3, 1997. I also went to Detroit, Indy, Minneapolis and Fargo, and tickets were easy to get for those shows, but for some reason I was having trouble getting tickets to Cincinnati. Ended up some different ticket angency was handling it and I didnt get tix until a week before the show. But I was lucky and got 4th row center. I sure wont forget that 700 mile drive from Minneapolis. And when they all walked on stage together, I was so proud to think that I was actually going to get to see them live after waiting for 20 years. It was also very cool because it was Lindsey's birthday, so that made it evern more special.:)

Mount St. Helens: Sorry...I don't remember. :(

Space Shuttle Challenger: I was watching it and was flabbergasted. I held out hope that the 'capsule' the astronauts were contained in would be found with them all alive....even against all odds. :(

O.J Simpson: I really didn't know anything about it until the 'chase' scenes on tv. I thought it pretty well proved his guilt in my mind and I was devestated at the thought. At that time, I adored OJ. I thought he was adorable and so likable. I think I grieved that image being shattered.

9/11: I'm sorry to admit that I didn't really recognize the signifigance of the Trade center before then. I heard that a plane had hit the trade center and really didn't give it much thought. Then when the second plane hit...I can't really describe the feelings I had when I realized what was happening. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was helpless to protect my children.

The fall of the Berlin Wall:I watched it on TV, but I'm ashamed to say that I really didn't absorb the signifigance of it at the time. It wasn't till much later.

When Princess Diana died: I was driving home from my brother in law's card party with sleeping kids in the van. They didn't report her death immediately, so I remember praying and praying for her....and being rather shocked and how effected I was by this. I cried for her, and I never really was a 'princess watcher'...and rarely went out of my way to read about her. I think I just identified with her as a mother leaving children behind.

As far as the Murrow Building....the sheer nonsense of it. I do not see how those people...those *babies* could be viewed as collateral damage, or whatever. Whatever was being avenged was done so in the name of evil. Senseless.

By the way, our vehicle broke down once (caught on fire, actually!! Bad tranny overhaul.) outside Perry,OK a few years ago We were hauling a trailer, livestock and a whole buncha kids. Several drivers stopped with fire extinguishers. (I was throwing the kids out and unhooking the trailer because I was sure it would explode....no gas tank under the hood, but I was positive it would blow.) Anyway, the folks in that town could not have been more helpful if we'd have scripted it. The tow truck driver loaned us his personal truck to finish hauling our livestock to a cool, safe place. While we were doing that, they called the motel to check on the kids and make sure they didn't need anything to eat, etc. The dealership put us in a brand new transmission and we were on our way by morning. Anyway, to draw the connection...Perry is where they caught TImothy Mc Veigh. Perry just means the nicest folks on earth to me.

Kelly :)
