View Full Version : You're Fired (Literally)

So anyhoo, Here I sat 24 hours ago thinking I was going into work at 3:30 for a review and a nice raise. I get there, and the manager calls me into the back room and was like "before we start this I have to ask you a question. Did you eat one of the hot dog's off the grill when you threw them away last night. I was like "Sure I did. I was throwing them away anyway." Not exactly one of my better moves to say that. SHe proceeds to say "well, then I have to fire you." I was like HUH?!?!?!? What are you talking about? She said "I was watching the video tape and I saw you doing this." I wanted to give you a chance to answer. I wasnt going to lie. The thing that pisses me off is that I was very loyal to this place, even though it didnt pay a ton of money. They gave me a job when I needed it and I respect that. I used to take the old hot dogs home to the dog and feed them to him and this lady that works there and I would at the end of the night eat one or 2 as I threw them away. So something about this doesnt add up. Talk about a kick to this stomach. Here I've been working to build things up again after haveing ****ed up pretty bad over the last 7 months and now it's gone in a snap of a finger. I'm trying really hard not to get into that self pity mode. I was watching that Flight 93 movie last night and thinking to myself "That couldve been me." or I couldve been an Enron worker and lost my life savings. You wanna try to have that glass half full attitude, but man after going from a nice raise to fired it aint easy. Sorry to vent like this, but I need that support right now. Thank you.:)

David that sucks. Why do they fire people for eating hot dogs that are being thrown away anyway? Super weird. You're probably better off.

Hey David, I'm sorry to hear that. That was a crappy thing for them to do. I doubt it's really your fault. They probably just don't want to give you a raise because it would cut into their profits. I'd file for unemployment. And look for something else in the meantime. Sometimes these things are meant to be.

I'm sorry, David. Yeah, file for unemployment quick.
I hope this turns out to be a blessing in disguise.
The reason they fired you does sound like an excuse rather than the real reason.
Although, when I was young and worked at fast food, you weren't allowed to eat the things that had to be thrown out either. So maybe that was the real reason. But if it was, they should have told you that in the rules when you started.
Anyway, good luck.

I am really sorry to hear this, David!
You know what though, no person should have to work for a food service establishment that monitors its employees on video. Video should be for the safety of employees, not for spying.
File for unemployment, and look for a job where you will be respected.

were you issued a handbook, or a policy book, or was that instruction on daysend food ever told to you or is written somewhere?Well, it does say that you must pay for what you eat, but I didnt think that included wasted food. The thing is, she says she watches the video everyday, and back a couple months ago, this other lady that works there and I would share hot dogs at the end of the night and nothing happened then? If you asked me the fish stinks from the head up.

Don't you worry David. Things will work out and yes by all means get started on unemployment benefits. Do it today...relax in the thought that you can have some income come in. Hopefully you can do it online or by phone and get it rolling. Here in CA, it can be done quickly and easily online.

I told my manager about that, and she responded by saying that the video for those days is already been used again. So she's off the hook, and of course when the manage asked if she did thisd, she denied it. Guess what though, she'el get hers.

Cold sons o' b*tches. This is unbelievable. God forbid you have an opinion about being fired. File for unemployment, go to Google and put in your city and unemployement to see how to do it. I agree that your paper may be interested in this. Also, why the hell would you want to go there anyway after they fired you? You wouldn't grace them with your presence anyway!

employers can be such Nazis! I'm sorry you have to deal with their crap! I once quit a job at an insurance company...and after my "exit interview" (i was told to being all my personal items with me), I was "escorted" from the building by security, and disallowed to even go to the area I just left to say good-bye to anyone! I can't believe that they're making such a big deal over a hot dog! thank god you didn't take a pen!

David, this is so insane. I'm so sorry! I'm not sure if you can collect unemployment if you've been fired for "theft" :sorry: , but do try anyway. I'm concerned that they didn't want to give you a raise or whatever, so they fired you for something you may not be able to collect unemployment for. I hope I'm wrong! Sorry to hear about this - but it's the same the world over, I reckon. I've been fired three times from jobs for no reason (I know that sounds unlikely but it's true) - it just suits some employers to screw you over and they don't have the moral fibre to tell you straight that they're screwing you over. They prefer to make out that you broke a rule or something.

One time I was fired because a colleague (who had been top earner till I arrived) told the boss I said rude things about the boss's daughter... I never even met her...

Another time I was a van driver and I was given a van that was nowhere near roadworthy - I complained and said I'd take it down to the police station if I had to drive it - so I got fired instead.

Another time I was working at the Post Office as a temporary Xmas worker, and out of nowhere they accused me of stealing mail  I mean, Jeeeesus. I asked them to prove it, I invited them to look in my car, my bag etc, but no - I was fired, and they didn't have to prove anything because I was only a temporary worker. I had no idea why they sprung that on me, and that hurt a bit to be honest, as I guess you are hurting right now.

Some employers are just barely human - but at least it shows us how much further up the evolutionary scale the rest of us are

I am so sorry to hear this David. The whole thing does sound fishy to me. She looks at the videotape everyday? Never saw the other lady on the tape eating a hot dog? Sounds like a friend or relative might have needed a job so they had to create a position or something.
Hopefully you can get some kind of unemployment and even better yet get a job where you are treated nicely.

It could just be because of liability if you were to get sick. But being fired for it is extreme.

Pattie, I think your theory may prove true. I also think David that you will find something better, who wants to work for people like that anyway? Not all companies are run that way but unfortunately too many are.

David:wavey: , I am so sorry to hear about the incident - getting fired is a very, very unpleasant experience.:( I hope you will find something new soon :)
However, like everybody else says, the whole story sounds strange. Why wouldn't they allow people to eat stuff that are going to be thrown away?? It doesn't make sense. And even if it was not allowed, and you didn't know, why on earth would they just fire you without giving you a second chance or warning or whatever? I mean, you have to know that there is a rule in order to break it, you didn't know, so it was not, at least entirely, your fault..After all, in law there is something called " good faith"..
Maybe they wanted to hire a relative or something..
Anyway, take care and I 'm sure you'll find a place with nicer employers..

David,

This is so ridiculous that it would be funny if the consequense hadn't been so serious. It seems that if a policy against it were in place, employees should have been informed of it. I'm sorry for what you had to go through, but I agree with everyone when they say that something...almost anything...else will be better. Good luck to you!

David, I'm sorry to hear this. What a ridiculous reason to be let go and I agree that this woman has some problems if she thinks that its better to throw food in the garbage rather than donate to a shelter or simply not be wasteful and eat it.

Sorry everyone. I've been busy looking for jobs the last couple days. I decided that sitting on my ass and feeling sorry for myself wasnt a good idea. I filled 3 out yesterday and today, and there's this place that's like 4 blocks from my house that probably will have something for me next week. Here's the funny thing. The manager of that place is the husband of the head cashier at my old job!! Talk about a weird situation. But he knows me, and I was honest with him about what happened. Also, My store manager at my job I was just fired at felt really bad for me so she said I could use her as a personal but not professional reference, which I really appriciated! So I'm going to try a couple more places tomorrow and see what happens. I've learned that moping and doing nothing only makes the problem worse. Although I will say that the depression meds that I'm on have helped me keep my sanity.

There's a new book out on this subject: http://www.firedbyannabellegurwitch.com/.

From her site:

Get Fired!
Whether you're the CEO of a large corporation, working a temp job in a law firm, or an actor starring in your own sitcom, it's hard to go through life and never get fired, canned, outsourced, downsized, laid off, or my personal favorite, "decruited".

I was fired by a cultural icon [Woody Allen, and he called her "retarded"] and that really sucks! But after hearing some these tales of jobs gone bad, I realized I wasn't alone and my story didn't seen so terrible. Beyond the hilarity, I have truly been inspired by these accounts. I've known some of the people whose stories have been part of the Fired nights for years, and yet I had no idea about all the crappy "character building" experiences that have contributed to making them into people I admire.

Of course, you might not have been ever fired and that's just great. But if you have, you might want to write your story down too. I'm not a therapist , but I am an actress and have been in a lot of therapy. Writing your story down can help you get closure to your experience. In fact, if you want to share your story with us.

Someone more clever than I said, "it's not the bounce that counts, it's the bounce back." and I hope after hearing these stories, you will feel the same way.

I'm planning to get an FID card to carry mace actually, speaking of guns. Someone tried to get into our apartment a couple of weekends ago. I wasn't home but my roommate woke up in the wee hours of the morning to someone trying to open the door. It was probably our downstairs neighbor, he seems to be a drunk and has stolen wine from our downstairs landing area before. He was probably just looking for booze. But we don't really know for sure who it was. Anyway, I would be more comfortable if I had something like that to protect myself.
