I just received an email from a publishing company called PublishAmerica stating that they are willing to publish my manuscript.

This company has published two novels by an acquaintence of mine (but of course mine is sooo much better than hers) and she seems pretty happy with them. I haven't signed anything yet, but I'll keep y'all informed. Assuming I do sign on, it will still be some time before the book is available for purchase as it still must go through the editing and design phases first. I'll keep you posted on that as well.

I put "Erratic Circles" as the title for the Copyright registration, but I'm still not sure I really like it.

See if you can coincide your book siging tour with a certain other musical tour if it happens! "Well gee, we are both in the same city AGAIN! I will have to see them one-more-time".

And not a happy one.

After reviewing the sample contract sent to me by PublishAmerica, I voiced some concerns over a clause in the contract stating that they reserve the right to (I'm paraphrasing here) "modify, edit, and/or delete any material they find offensive." I emailed them asking, if PublishAmerica were to exercise this right, would I have any say in what was "modified." After asking this question several times in varying forms and receiving only cryptic answers, it basically came down to this:

I would not have a say if they were to decide to "modify" my work.
Offensive material that would be removed includes, among other things, "graphic sexual details."

The company would not elaborate on their definition of "graphic sexual details" nor would they review my manuscript and notify me of any required modifications without a signed contract. (Yet signing the contract would put me and my work at the mercy of the company for seven years!!!)

As much as I would love to see my work in print, I cannot in good conscience subject my work to the possibility of "modification." Therefore, I have decided not to sign the contract with PublishAmerica. I have, however, located a couple of other small publishers that seem to have some definite potential and are indeed actively seeking gay themed manuscripts. The glaring problem with this is that their requirements for length mean that I must increase my manuscript's word count by at least 10,000 (!!!) which could very well take a long, long time. Sigh.

I wouldn't be too upset. I wouldn't want a book I worked so much on to be censored. You will get there. Keep at it!

congratulations and sorry.
Now you know someone likes your book, surely others will, too - hold out for editing you feel comfortable with. Good luck. It is actually kind of amazing to me that you wrote a book and someone liked it right away. Not as a reflection on you, but of all I've heard about bazillions of authors who can't get their stuff published. Also because I can't imagine writing a book, it seems so difficult. Although in theory probably all of my posts on here are the size of a book. But still, writing book = too hard. :)
Quite an accomplishment. And you are so young!

Vicky - I totally agree with you. Don't let anyone butcher your book. And you've come this far, press forward and get those few more words and publish a book, your book, just as you imagine it
