Vendors, new and old, return to Red Bluff
RED BLUFF - It takes a lot of work to turn the dirt floor of the Pauline Davis Pavilion into one of the largest and most popular western trade shows on the West Coast.

If you want to know what goes into getting the trade show up and going, ask the woman in the yellow jacket, but you'll need to do it quickly before her phone goes off.

"The first thing I often hear is, Are you Teri?'"

Teri Collins has been with the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale Trade Show for the past three years. "This is done with a lot of cooperation," said Collins. "I couldn't do half of what I do without the help and cooperation of these great venders." Now in her third year, the number of vendors has grown from 120 to almost 200.

"We are getting bigger and more than half of these are long-time participants," said Collins.

There are also a lot of new faces at this year's trade show. For western enthusiasts and just casual browsers; the is something for everyone. Steve Waldock has been coming to Red Bluff for 14 years. Outback Oz offers clothing and cowhide mirrors. "I've been in pretty much the same spot," said Waldock, who is a native of Gin Gin, Australia.

"Businesswise this, is a good place because it often rains, and I sell waterproof jackets," said Waldock. "But it also is reminiscent of where I come from. We have sugar cane and cattle."

He noted that Red Bluff is a friendly place and that people come back year after year just to talk.

This will be the first time in Red Bluff for Mike Hardister of Wagon West Beds. He said he thinks Red Bluff is the ideal spot to debut his product. Hardister crafts beds out of wagons. The one on display at this year's trade show is his second made from a 1900 wagon. "I sleep on the first," said Hardister of Sonoma. "It's a labor of love."

The bed comes with a night stand made from the wagon's axles, and everything is original. In all, it took him 320 hours. Price, $30,000. The bed is made to roll away from the wall to reveal a linen closet and small wine rack in the storage compartment in the front. There is also a gun rack.

"I can't think of a better place to debut this bed," said Hardister. "I've had lots of people asked me about old wagons they have and how I can work on them."

His girlfriend Louann Kosak is joining him on the trip to Red Bluff. She has her own talents on display at Shic Skins. Kosak designs clothing out of leather and rabbit skins. The bedroom treatment, pillows and bedspread are her designs. Kosak has done work for Alan Johnson, Brooks and Dunn, Stevie Nicks and Bo Derek.

For Eddie Garcia, of who was setting up Tuesday, Red Bluff is also a lucrative stop. His booth, How Cute! will feature Austrian crystals. This is his third trip to the trade show. Joining him this year is Patrick Ruiz. This is Ruiz's first year. "This is a great town. We do well here," said Garcia.

Returning for her fourth year is Lynn Cordova of Steer Geer. She has the distinction of being the only retail booth in the information tent. "This is where everyone comes," she said, explaining why she returns to Red Bluff. "This is one of the biggest shows. People are really friendly."

Andy Fagundes has been at the show for 15 years as best as he can recall. He works for Westway which is a distributor of liquid feed and supplements.

"I would say that west of Denver this is the most concentrated group of people in the same industry," said Fagundes. "These are the type of people we want as customers."

After explaining the professional reasons for being there, he added that he serves coffee and hot chocolate at his booth and just enjoys meeting and talking to people.

"Red Bluff is a good place to be," said Fagundes.
