View Full Version : Movie guilty pleasures

The Tower

I've been in an odd streak lately of watching movies that would most likely be considered in the category of ** ahem ** .... guilty pleasures.

Van Helsing

Hidiously overacted with an abysmal script. But, the imagery and Super Hottie Hugh Jackman have me hooked.

the Harryhausen Sinbad movies

Patrick Wayne doing that faggy walk is ....... oy!

Mommie Dearest

-------

Christina: There's a liquor store to the right.
Joan Crawford: I should've know you'd know where to find the boys and the booze.

------

Joan Crawford: Why can't you give me the respect that I'm entitled to? Why can't you treat me like I would be treated by any stranger on the street?
Christina: Because I am NOT one of your fans!!!!!

------

Joan Crawford: Did you scrub the bathroom floor today? DID YOU?
Christina Crawford: Yes, Mommie.
Joan Crawford: Yes, Mommie what?
Christina Crawford: Yes, Mommie Dearest.
Joan Crawford: When I told you to call me that, I wanted you to mean it.

Xanadu - it's wretched, but for some reason I can't turn my eyes away from it. Gene Kelly in a roller disco rink.... 'nuff said.

The Faculty
Scream[s]

Thank you for reminding me to put Xanadu and Mommie Dearest in my queue. I haven't seen either.

I wish you lived closer...you're the only other big Mariah fan I know...:(

I have watched Mommie Dearest and 9 to 5 like 10 times this week.

"I'm gonna get that gun and change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot!"

"Christina! Christopher! Damnit! Carol Anne, I have asked you to keep the children quiet today!"

"Don't f*ck with me fellas!"

poor Carol Anne...wherever she is

I have an mp3 that has all the best lines from Mommie Dearest if anyone's interested, let me know.

honey, I live in Mississippi.

all the men here are either into hunting and fishing and the queers are all crater-faced, tight-rolling, pinky-ring, acid-washed losers...

My latest guilty pleasure is Jiminy Glick in La La Land.

Mommie Dearest--FAB. Was my late partner's favorite movie and I probably will never be able to watch it again, but oh how I loved saying "put a window where IT OUTTA BE"....and "I'M NOT ONE OF YOUR FAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNSSSSS"

9-5? It's not even a guilty pleasure, but on my top 10 list of greatest movies.

No...wire...hangers!!!!
(f-ing creepy)

This movie instrigued me even though every site I went to basically said it was a campy piece of ****. I don't listen. I think it was the psycho mother thing. That always fascinates me (Psycho, The Manchurian Candidate, etc.). Probably because it hits a little close to home at times but let's not go there. Anyways, I ordered it and watched it and discovered...it was a campy piece of ****. It seems to be two hours of random shocking scenes that hardly connect at all. Oh well. The no wire hangers scene makes it worth it.

Oh, and I soooo want that MP3

For anyone who loves Mommie Dearest mid 1950s Joan Crawford is a camp must.Torch Song a technicolor MGM 'musical' is hilariously over the top .Even better is Johnny Guitar where the protagonist and antagonist are a very butch Joan and Mercedes McCambridge ,again in technicolor and truly one of a kind .It is actually highly regarded in some critical circles.Queen Bee from 1955 is another one .Her character Eva Phillips is diabolically awful.Faye must have repeatedly watched all these films as well as 1950's Harriet Craig before playing Joan.

we bought that movie last night during my bi-weekly trip to WherehouseMusic (Cant pass up the "Buy 3 get 1 Free" daily sales gimmick)...But I like it for the sexy as hell Kate Beckingsale (Damn she looks hot throughout).

Haha, me, too! Mainly because I'm so in love with Janeane Garofalo.

Others:

Monster-In-Law - So bad, but so deliciously fun. Though I wouldn't be able to tolerate J Ho if it didn't have the likes of Michael Vartan and Will Arnett in it.
The Night Porter - I whip this piece of trash out every year or so.
Cold Mountain - It's so earnest that it's painful at times, but I still greatly enjoy it.
The Matchmaker - Another Garofalo flick that I shouldn't love as much as I do.

There are two Pam Grier movies that are awesome.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7124/dollhouse6xl.jpg
In The Big Doll House, a group of American women are imprisoned in the Phillipines, under the watch of a sadistic female warden (she likes to whip them and threaten them with venomous snakes). The women hatch a plot to escape.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8197/foxybrown7by.jpg
Foxy Brown is even better. Lots of people in the movie ignore the posters advice and mess with Foxy. Oh, they gonna regret that. At one point, she is fighting a whole barfull of lesbians!

Love Pam Grier. "Jackie Brown" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I never tire of it and can recite the entire script verbatim.

MGM just released a few of her Blaxploitation flicks in a boxed set called "Fox In A Box" that's pretty cheap. It's got "Coffy," "Foxy Brown, and "Sheba Baby."

Well, it features Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. Resisting their charms is futile.

Some others:

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Weekend at Bernies
Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie
X-Men
X-2
Terminator 2
Sixteen Candles
Death Becomes Her
First Wives Club

The Baby-Sitters Club Movie - read the books when I was younger, the movie is super dorky now but I still watch sometimes for that hit of nostalgia.

Troop Beverly Hills - Spoiled brats, Shelley Long and Beverly Hills... cheesy 80s goodness.

The Last American Virgin - Another one of those B-rate 80s movies TNT would air in droves on Friday nights in the 90s. Great soundtrack though.

First Wives Club - I can echo Kim on this one. Love the ending with Bette, Diane and Goldie singing "You Don't Own Me".

Mommie Dearest - truly spectacular

Tommy Boy - makes me laugh out loud every single time "Richard, who's your favorite Little Rascal? Is it Alfalfa? Or is it...Spanky."

Adventures in Babysitting - haven't seen this in years, but I love it

The Karate Kid - so bad, it's irresistable

The Legend of Billie Jean - my absolute favorite bad movie evah! "Fair is fair!"

Mask - I don't really consider this a "guilty pleasure" at all, I think it's a phenomenal movie. Cher should have won the Oscar for this performance, better than Moonstruck. And Sam Elliot was hawt in it.

Overboard - Kurt & Goldie are so cute in this silly movie. "I just...ate a bug!"

I watched "Sextette" recently... not really a guilty pleasure, just a cheesy movie that I felt guilty about watching. It's from 1978 and stars a cadaverous 85-year old Mae West still playing the sex kitten... along with Timothy Dalton, Dom DeLuise, Tony Curtis, Ringo Starr, George Hamilton, Alice Cooper, Keith Moon and .... Regis Philbin! It was tragic but I couldn't stop watching.

Hmmmm....movies that I feel guilty watching, yet at the same time get pleasure from watching....

PORNO!!!

But seriously, I'm a huge B-movie fan, especially early Ed Wood!

Plan 9 From Outer Space - CLASSIC! If you watch no other movie, watch this one!

Glen Or Glenda - The stock footage AND Ed Wood in drag are hilarious. It wasn't meant to be comedy, which makes it even funnier.

Reefer Madness - An anti-drug movie that's hilarious stoned.

Um, I love terrible movies. I have a total weakness for terrible action films like Con-Air. I see them all. I realized it was a sickness when I found myself at the movie theater buying a ticket for The Punisher awhile back. Tom 'I Just Want My Kids Back' Jane's hotness doesn't make that okay.

I also love bad disaster movies. Not the good ones. I've seen Volcano at LEAST a hundred times.

I love rom-coms. All of them. Good, bad, and ugly. I see them all. I even go to the theater to see all of Jennifer Lopez's. I have a special weakness for the Ron Shelton sports/romantic comedy combos. Obviously, Bull Durham is good, but is Tin Cup? Nooo. And I love it enough to own it on DVD.

I also love some really awful comedies- the two main ones being Zoolander & The Sweetest Thing. I LOVE The Sweetest Thing. It's so awful, but I still almost pee myself everytime I watch it.

Oh, and I also have a hardcore addiction to Hallmark Channel, ABC Family, and Lifetime movies. The Hallmark Channel will suck my days away if I let it. Just today, instead of cleaning and doing a ton of home improvement stuff, I've been knitting in my gnome pajamas and watching the marathon of the crappy Katherine Heigle prairie movies, starting with "Love Comes Softly." I love this ****.

It's hard to resist a movie with Peter O'toole, and saying that I'd like to add

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/B00006ADEO.jpg

to my list. I've also decided to name my son Peter O'toole, in case he ever needs to fall back on porn making.

I also thought Christina Applegate stole the show in The Sweetest Thing. I really like Selma Blair (inexplicably) but not so much in that one.

I like Adam Sandler movies, and think he's an undiscovered genoius. IMO he will win an Oscar sooner or later (probably much before than Heath Ledger).

Well Paul Thomas Anderson (an American, I think) chose him as a leading actor and Sandler went very close to win Golden Palm for best actor in Cannes.

P.S Jerry Lewis is a genius

I freakin love this movie and the soundtrack.

"I need a cooooool rider!"

"Reproduction!"

and how cheesy is the song Love Will Turn Back the Hands of Time...but I love it

O god. I know all the words to those songs. I sang Reproduction at the beginning of every Bio 30 class on the subject. No one got it.

As far as guilty pleasures go, I hate to admit it but I love The Three Amigos. LOVE IT! C'mon, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short? Awesome.

Oh, and Poison Ivy. Well, basically anything with Drew Barrymore. I just think she's such a cutie pie.

Speaking of Grease 2, does anyone know where Michelle Pfeiffer has been lately? I absolutely love her! But, she hasn't made a movie in five years! Has she given up acting to be a full time mom? Does anyone know if she has any projects planed?

Last year, strangely she backed out at the last moment from A Prairie Home Companion by Altman and Infamous, the new Capote biography with Sandra Bullock. Hope Davis took her place.

How about when she kills Ricki's boyfriend with a fire poker and is utterly indignant and offended by the mess that ensues? She was fantastic in that movie. And it's hard not to fall in love with a movie where Turner murders Patricia Hearst with a pay phone because she's wearing white shoes after Labor Day.

That scene is brilliant. Or when she's in the car and runs over the teacher...she's all angry and then tosses it off with a shake of her head and goes back to happy, smiley Mom. Priceless.

Kathleen Turner is wonderful in this role. She also blows me away as Barbara Rose in War Of The Roses. She's a master at dark comedy.

Okay, Okay... take "Serial Mom" off my list. In hindsight, I really don't feel guilty for liking it, except for the fact that it just seems wrong to like anything with Ricki Lake in it.

I've been in an odd streak lately of watching movies that would most likely be considered in the category of ** ahem ** .... guilty pleasures.

Van Helsing

Hidiously overacted with an abysmal script. But, the imagery and Super Hottie Hugh Jackman have me hooked.

Ha! I feel the same way, although, I haven't seen the movie yet --abysmal script has kept me away.

I also feel this way about The New World...I DO NOT want to sit through 2 hours of Colin Ferrell, but Christian Bale is in it and that's the only reason I'm even entertaining seeing it. So far I've only heard bad reviews too.
