View Full Version : If you could talk with Stevie...
This could be a controversial topic. If you could meet Stevie Nicks, one on one, and ask her anything, and if she would truthfully answer with no BS...what would you ask her. Here is what I would ask:
1) Stevie, why did you do cocaine for 10 years? I don't blame you for using it, it was part of the rock culture at the time, even outside of rock...but every day for 10 years! You had to know it was bad for you, at least in the quantities you consumed. By your own admission, you tooted up the first thing in the morning and continued on that stuff the rest of the day. Why couldn't you quit? Did you even want to quit? Do you miss it now?
2) Stevie, why didn't you ever marry? No man was ever good enough for you? Or, no man wanted you?
3) Edit: a third question. Stevie, you'll soon be 58. How does a 70's hippy chick rock star cope with old age...not physically, but mentally? What are your words of advice to us?
I'm sorry if anyone finds this thread out of line or is upset with it. If you are, my apologies. But, those are my burning Stevie questions.
What would you ask Stevie?

5 - why do you think the Frankenboks are appropriate stage attire?
6 - what do you really think of your fans; especially the gay element?
7 - what is your skincare routine?
8 - are you ever really gonna produce an autobiography?
9 - can I be your first male backup singer?
10 - what's your favorite picture of yourself and why?

I'm not that curious about Stevie anymore. And she probably wouldn't like some of the questions. But I'd want to know:
1. Are you saying all the same-same, same game, same name, or saa--aame?
2. What were you feeling and what was going through your head the first time you played "Silver Springs" after so many years?
3. Why aren't you more adventurous with your setlist?
and the totally none of my business but really what I'm most curious about Stevie:
4. Have you been in a relationship with a woman?
Would you/have you ever dated a "nobody"?
Stevie said in an interview (Australia magazine I think) that she has dated a waiter. Probably an aspiring LA actor.
Addiction  Just a guess
I've read it's not that addictive...maybe for some people it is.

She said in an interview once that during "the Klonipin era," she fired lots of people kinda randomly for very little or no reason, and feels badly about it now, and that it was mostly a result of the drug and how she was feeling at the time. So - I think maybe the answer would be, "yeah!"

My guess is Stevie is a difficult person to work for as part of the personal staff. She probably pays the staff more than they're worth...so has bought this loyalty. Just my opinion.

COULD be wrong, of course, but I have the impression that if that was ever true, it no longer is . . . . I think she probably only keeps people around her that she likes very much and respects (for example, Karen) and just kinda lets people "do their thing." I really do have the impression that she's gotten to the point where her attitude is, "Life's too short to have a temper tantrum over green jellybeans not being removed from the bowl in my 5 star luxury hotel by the time I got in to town." I suppose it's not a laugh a minute, but I really strongly suspect that she has things down to "smooth sailing" at this point. It's just not worth the energy.

No one asked the most important question:
Stevie, are you really a witch?
I remember this being asked by a caller on Rockline sometime in the early 80's. The caller basically said "there are rumors that you're a witch and I'm wondering if it's true."
Stevie responded by first saying that people should not believe rumors and that anytime we want to know the truth we should just ask her. I believe, but not positive, that she said specifically that we should call her. I remember thinking well, give me your number then.
Then she said she was sad about these rumors and that no, she's not a witch.
I'd love to get a transcript of that.

After twenty some years of being asked this nonsense, Stevie finally exploded at someone and uttered this now classic line..."I'm not a witch....get a life" :D This was way before the "get a life" phrase became overused. Who knows...maybe Stevie invented that phrase.
The waiter guy, if its the same one, is 20 years younger than her:p !
Well, I'm not surprised at that. I would guess most of her current "lovers" are 20 years younger than her. Sadly, IMO, they are just after money or connections.

So where _is_ Emmeline?
Unless I missed it no one asked:
Stevie, where did you get the big ring you were flashing at the Melbourne races? And, why were you flashing it?
And this question:
Stevie do you ever drive a car?
(I read somewhere her drivers license expired and she never bothered to renew it because the DMV takes lousy photos! I can attest to that!)
I have one more question, but don't want to start a thread so I'll stick it here. Of course its none of our business, but there is no harm in speculating. Ever wonder how much money Stevie earns in a year? I mean net profit after paying all the help, agents, publicity people, secretaries, clothing design, etc.....
I know it varies depending on whether she is touring or is releasing a new record. From what I can figure out she has three sources of income (I'm not counting investments, if any). Royalties from old FM records, royalties from her solo records, and touring. (I'm not going to count bat mitzvas, that was an aberration.) The records are not selling huge numbers anymore, and I don't yhink there is much profit in touring, it's done more to promote a new CD.
I could be way off base, but I figure she averages $1 million or less before taxes. A big number for sure, but not by Hollywood standards where movie stars pull in $10 million per film and some pro athletes make $20 million per year.
Anybody have ideas on this?
"I am ready for my solo, Mr. Buckingham..." :D :wavey:

Obscure! Is that really obscure?!
It's right up there with "Play it again, Sam" as one of the most famous movie misquotes.

There's tons of profit in touring, especially at the prices Stevie charges (and especially when she just shacks up in Vegas for a couple weeks and doesn't have to pay anyone to fly her and her band around, or disassemble and reassemble her set every night).
Most artists make nearly all of their money from touring; it's the albums which don't bring in that much profit. Stevie's Gold Dust tour isn't promoting any CD release. And the Say You Will tour wasn't done in promotion of the new album. On the contrary, the album was released in part as an excuse for the band to tour.
As far as royalties, you're forgetting, she gets paid not only when people buy the albums, but also when her songs are played on the radio. And that's not only performing royalties, but also songwriting and publishing royalties. Songs like "Dreams," "Gypsy" and "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" are still pretty prominent radio staples in certain formats (and she'll also pull in some royalties if anybody actually bothers to play Ms. Lohan's cover of "Edge of Seventeen"), so I imagine she doesn't do too poorly for herself in that area either.

Good points indeed. By "royalties" I was considering all forms including radio play, musak, recording by others. Where may disagree, is how profitable is touring. A concert with 10,000 people at an average of $75 = $750,000...but there are so many people to pay plus the fee for the venue, security, ushers, other bands, Stevie's band. How much is left after all that? I don't know. Anyone have first hand knowledge of this? I would be surprised if there was $50,000 left for Stevie herself (for one single concert, not the whole tour)

$50,000?! You think it costs $700,000 to put on a single concert?! Where on earth do you think that money goes?!
Venue fees are nominal, as most venues are more than happy to have an event to put on and will make most of their money from concessions and parking.
Security and ushers - these folks are paid by the venue, I believe. But even if they're paid by Stevie, how much money do you think they make for an evening's work? Same for roadies and other crews members. These people are doing menial labor; they're not walking home with gigantic pay checks at the end of the day. I mean, even if there were a hundred employees working a Stevie Nicks concert, and Stevie was feeling especially generous and paid them all $1000 for one day's work, that's still less than 1/7 of that $750,000 pie.
As for Stevie's band and entourage of "personal assistants," I don't doubt that they get paid very well, but none of these people is a millionaire. Let's say Stevie was feeling really generous again, and paid everyone in her band and her entourage - and there couldn't possibly be more than, what, twenty of them? - $10,000 a night, that's still only double what she paid all those other employees. There's still $350,000 left over in this incredibly generous scenario. The venue gets a cut, and of course there are travel costs, plus nominal costs for stuff like electricity and equipment repair, but how do you think that $300,000 disappears? Vanessa Carlton ain't getting all of it.
Whatever Stevie grosses for a single concert, I'm sure she goes home with a good half of it.

What you say sounds logical. Good comments. That's why I asked for responses. However, one big person has been left out of this...the concert promoter. He (or she), is the one financing the deal and taking the risk. I think Stevie is guarateed some minimum amount..then a share of the net. I've read the venue fee for Staples Center in LA is around $100,000 for a night. The Lakers and Kings pay that for each game. Maybe Stevie plays cheaper venues like the obsolete Forum.

Where may disagree, is how profitable is touring.
On the SYW tour, the band itself was guaranteed $750,000 per show, I believe, with Stevie and Lindsey getting the lion's share. They walked away with MILLIONS.

As I said earlier, I thouht I figured it out and don't want to go any further with it. If Ms.Nicks was that hard up for cocaine, to resort to such an "unconvential" means of delivery, then she really had a serious, abusive, cocaine problem. I'm almost reaching the point where Stevie Nicks was, IMO, a coke and sex junkie. Next thing I'll hear is she smoked pot!

I'm going to answer my own posts.
Are you crazy? Stevie Nicks smoked pot over the years...so what? You University of Kentucky hillbillies are so pretenious. You'll never live down that racist Coach Adolph Rupp. Go see "Glory Road" for the real truth. Remember, educationally, Kentucky ranks ahead of Mississippi. That's great news... 49th in country... but ahead of Mississippi

Stevie does use promoters, so yes, she does have to pay them, but again, they're not getting the lion's share of the pie.
And the Staples Center may charge $100,000 for an event, but it's also twice the size of the 10,000-seat venue you suggested in your first hypothetical, so double the crowd and double your profits. But regardless, I don't think Stevie's played a place that big on her own in a very long time; she's sticking to smaller venues, which in turn have smaller fees.
I mean, we could go back and forth forever conjecturing about who gets how much of whatever size gross, but it's just something of a truism in the music industry that touring is where most artists make nearly all of their money. It's the bread and butter. Bands like the Eagles simply wouldn't keep going out on the road for these nostalgia tours year after year if they weren't making **** tons of cash. The profits to be reaped are huge.

OK...you have convinced me. I can see your point with the nostalia tours with the Eagles, Stones and the like (and Stevie Nicks). They're certainly not selling huge numbers of records anymore.

Depends on individual people. I didn't get addicted to Sudoku (weird example, I know), but my brother did. I need to eat ketchup at my dinner the whole time (sorry, getting weirder), most people, to my knowledge, don't. Stick that onto something that's actually important and potentailly life-threatening, unlike number games or tomato-based edible products, and Stevie got addicted to cocaine, and other people didn't.

No, sudoku is a Japanese number puzzle that has become quite the worldwide craze (see http://www.sudoku.com/ and a million other websites about it), and it's a horrible analogy to cocaine, which is a physically addictive drug that has remarkably little in common with an affection for number puzzles or ketchup.

I have another question for Stevie. Does she ever take a vacation and to where?
And this...the travel to Australia...was that on a private plane? It's a 14 hour trip from Los Angeles to Sydney/Melbourne and it takes a 747 to go non-stop (I know..I've made that trip). I don't think there is a private plane that can make that trip without several stops. Anybody know how she travels?
