View Full Version : Stevie Nicks movie
Before everyone gets all worked up...I don't know of a Stevie Nicks biography in actual production. I have heard rumours, however, that some producers are proposing one tentatively called Bella Donna, if they could get Stevie to cooperate. Her story would make a great film IMO. I was thinking about her life story, and how you could break it down into several periods. These are my thoughts on the film.
1) The film could start with Stevie in high school in Northern California and first meeting Lindsey Buckingham. This phase could go through Stevie's time at Cal State San Jose.
2) The next phase could be pre-FM in Los Angeles and the BN albumn.
3) The 3rd chapter could be the miraculous "discovery" of BN by Mick Fleetwood and cover the FM sensation through about 1980. Of course this part could depict the making of Rumours and the split ups of BN and the McVie's. A lot of drama here.
4) The 4th chapter would be her solo Bella Donna period through 1986 and then going to Betty Ford for drug addiction. Depending on how it's portrayed, this part could get ugly.
5) The next part would deal with her Klonipin abuse and inactivity through early 1990's
6) The picure could end with the reuniting of FM and the Clinton galas and then finally The Dance tour.
I don't know if there would be a big enough audience for a theatrical release, but it could work for cable TV like HBO or Showtime.
Anyone else hear about this film? I hope it actually comes to fruition.

isn't that the exact timeline of how things occured? ;)
I would LOVE a movie, but I'd be really picky about it...on second thought, maybe I don't want a movie...ever seen the movie about Naomi and Wynnona - now there's a way to really make a great story really bad

Oh, I just realized I left out the most important part...who plays Stevie Nicks in this movie. I propose Ashley Judd. She comes from a musical family and looks like Stevie. She is also old enough (38) to play the young and old Stevie.

I don't know. That was the immediate question that came to my mind. Obviously apart from myself  Hah, I can dream nobody on earth would please me. It'd be cool though.
On a slightly related topic ... what about Stevie as an actress?

as cool as that would be, it'd never work...the woman gets tongue-tied too easily; maybe guest roles or small parts tho

i think the movie would be a bigger audiance if it were about all of fleetwood mac, and called Rumors or something, however personaly i would rather see a strickly stevie film, god i have dreamed about that forever, but we all know we would find something inacturate, stupid, or bad about it, so i have mixed feelings about the whole thing really, i mean look at all the other movies like that one, however if HBO or showtime did it, it would probably be good, i think it would need a fantasy like artsy edge to it however, showing stevie as almost living in a non realistic world, also some creative things could accur when stevie is addicted to drugs, to show things from prespective, as well as klonopin, there are many many places one can go with this, however i think the overall theme should be that of overcoming negative things in ones life, to work for the better more postive, and ultimantly come out on top ( just like stevie :) )

Considering her age and all now...she would be limited to a cameo or guest spot. Maybe in this Stevie Nicks movie she could appear in the opening sequence where she starts to tell her story to, say, a reporter. Then the screen fades to her in high school.
I hope this movie is made. Personally I think it would be a blockbuster.

I think there's too much. I would say you could make the whole movie about just Rumours, just the cocaine and Klonopin, just the cocaine _or_ Klonopin if you got right down to it, just the Lindsey/Stevie story, just the ups and downs of even a decade. No film about Stevie Nicks would make enough money for anyone to do it if it were, like, three hours long. Two and a half hours, at the most, would leave between twenty minutes and a half an hour for each section. Maybe that'd be enough, but try fitting everything interesting that happened in Rumours into twenty minutes? And then the Mac high into the next ten minutes? I don't think that would work. If _I_ went to it, and they'd cut out a load of stuff to fit it in, I'd be complaining.
And yeah, I can think of no one who could play Stevie. You might need about three or four different Stevie's for a start...
I hope there would be a way of doing it, and doing it right, though. Done right it'd be awesome.

I agree. Cool for cable. Don't know for movie. To be successful, it would have to be very well directed, and it has to be something different. Tina Turner movie was cool. Oliver Stone The Doors... yeah, cool too. But what about seeing in theaters a movie about the Jacksons, Carpenters, Beach Boys, etc..?? All of them were for TV, and I think it was a right decision.
To be succesful, it has to be more.. "Hollywood", what means it would be more fiction than real life.
Even a Fleetwood Mac movie (who I find more interesting than Stevie's life) would be difficult to sell. But I wouldn't miss it anyway.

I used to see this happening, but don't now. For the story to really work, she would have to sign away the rights and completely co-operate with the production. I simply do not believe she would consent to having the truth told or would want anyone to embellish the history for dramatic effect. I mean - where is the story arc ? What is the climax or central conflict ?
It would take such careful writing and time, I can't see it. Like I said about the other movie thing, Stevie is just not the kind of person who has the discipline to be involved in film production. And if she wouldn't surrender some control over her story and image, of which she seems very protective, it would take decades to get this done.

It's the classic rags to riches story...plus overcoming the drug addictions. Stevie's story, IMO, has more merit than that Johnny Cash picture.

Then again, I'd rather she'd get cracking on that autobiography, though with Stevie, it'd probably be a fictional autobiography. Have you guys ever given thought to who could co-write an autobiography if Stevie were to ::knock on wood:: pass away before ever given the chance to do it herself? Who's been with her the most and the longest...her brother (god, no), Sharon, Lori?

Yes. Bob Spitz who wrote the acclaimed "The Beatles" biography that is in bookstores right now. I haven't read this book yet, just ordered on Amazon. It's like a 500 page book...very thorough.

You think so? It really isn't all that interesting and would be even less so since I doubt Stevie would give them creative control over the project. Girl becomes rock star, develops a couple of drug habits, kicks them and then returns to semi-popularity amongst the old crowd that bought her records. It's more of a Primetime segment (or hour-long special) than anything else. There's nothing in it that packs the punch of a Jim Morrison or a Tina Turner or a Ray Charles or a Diane Arbus or a Janis Joplin. Plus, it doesn't have much of an audience. JMO.

Well, in the movie, she actually needs to have her brain herniate. Then, she could be in a coma for several weeks/months, with a tracheostomy. Skipping all the Klonopin stuff, she returns with the band that made her famous and belts out her classics....after the tracheostomy is reversed, of course.

Well, she is a survivor and audiences love survivors. It doesn't count she isn't as popular, but she's alive and people want to know how, why she didn't die. Obviously it has to be tough. I think she's having a lot of offers and at a certain time she'll have to choose: have a real movie or have nothing. It needs a truthful script, a very good director and a young skilled actress.

Well again, I think Ashley Judd fits the part. Unfortunately, by the time Stevie get around to approving this Judd will be too old. Maybe she could just play the old Stevie. Go to Ashley's website and look at the photos. I think she has a strong resemblence to Stevie.

Rags ?
A girl whose father was a top executive for two huge corporations ?
The only rags she has ever subjected to have been the ones she chose to wear for a fashion statement.
On edit, this point has already been made !
And anyway, The Rose was already made. And Stevie didn't die, so there really isn't too much of a point.
You could build the crux of the story around losing her best friend and her descent into drugs, but I don't know that all that is enough to make a movie on. As far as there being two addictions and the whole abortion thing...that isn't a feature. It's a Lifetime MOW. Just not enough dramatic meat to the story. I think the strife of the making of Rumours has a lot more heft in terms of conflict.

Ms Kelley has been known to be a bit controversial hasnt she? I dont she'll be going over to Nancy's place anytime soon for tea...
Personally I don't think a movie about Stevie is a bad idea, though I can see the risk of it turning out to be a bit cheesy. The whole "girl becomes rock star/ enjoys fame/gets hooked on drugs/but finally survives".
Then again, they make autobiography-movies for all kinds of people, some of them I had never thought there would be so much interest in their lives ("Blow" with Johnny Depp, for instance), so why not Stevie and FM?
However, I think it would be better if the film focused on the band in general and the making of Rumours era. Or it could be something like a semi-fictional film, like "Velvet Goldmine" (which was pretty obviously about David Bowie/Iggy Pop/Lou Reed) but less hilarious. I mean it could focus on the zeitgeist plus all the actual characters, and not so much on how Stevie's life evolved. I miss a genuine film about the late 70's music scene (like let's say "24hour Party People" which was pretty much about Joy Division and other bands of that time).

Well, how about _we_ make it, and just have it for us, then? *shrugs* C'mon, it'd be fun! :blob2:
I think the Rumours story is better. There's a definite beginning to cover, introduce the two groups, have them come together, then you got the whole situation getting worse and worse, and very claustrophobic, that kind of thing can be done very well in movies, you got drugs to play with, same as with a more general Stevie film, again, good potential in a film, and a point to work towards, which would be the release of the album, everyone cmpletely shattered in more ways than one, but they get the music out there, and then this crazy high. Don't know where it'd end, though.
And I think Laura Linney should play Christine. If anyone cares. Though she might be a little old...

I adore Stevie. She's a wonderful singer and songwriter. She's a magnetic performer and a captivating presense. She's a survivor. But saying Stevie's story has more merit than Johnny Cash's is a pretty short-sighted statement IMO. Johnny Cash's legacy extends far beyond music. He was an activist who stood up for his beliefs even though he was part of a ultra-conservative Country genre. He championed the cause of prison reform, Native American rights. He gave voice to student protesters during the Vietnam War, but still went to perform for the troops. He had his own variety show that introduced artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young to Nashville and an a segment of the American public that otherwise probably never would have heard them. He was an uncompromising artist who battled the tyrany of network censors. And yes he, like Stevie, fought addictions that could and probably should have killed him. He came out the other side an intensely complex and compassionate artist that constantly walked the tightrope between damnation and salvation. His story is as worthy, if not moreso, than any entertainer dead or alive.
