Racist Man Sentenced To Attend Black Church

POSTED: 6:51 am EST January 16, 2006

CINCINNATI -- A judge has sentenced a suburban Cincinnati man to attend services for six weeks at a black church for threatening to punch a black cab driver and using racial slurs.

Judge William Mallory Jr. told 36-year-old Brett Haines, "It seems readily apparent to me that you don't like black people. That's OK with me. But you have to understand that you are at the whim and authority of a black judge."

Mallory let Haines choose between attending the black church for six Sundays or spending 30 days in jail. Haines said he'd try the church, although he doesn't usually worship on Sunday.

Mallory offered Haines the choice Friday after Haines was convicted of disorderly conduct. He was arrested in November after threatening cab driver David Wilson and Wilson's wife.

Mallory said he was concerned about maintaining the separation between church and state, so the judge asked Haines whether the option would offend him.

Haines said he would like to try it.

The cab driver said he wished Haines had been jailed instead because, in his words, "Church don't change everybody."

Well, jail only changes people for the worse in most cases. I say, for a first offense, this is a good "sentence".

Stupid social engineering attempt on the part of taffy-headed progressives.

It will do the opposite of what it was intended to do--as virtually all "sensitivity training" does in the workplace. People forced by government or employer to pretend they love other people just wind up hating other people even more.

Stupid busybody social engineering ... promulgated by turnip-headed morons.

The cab driver was the only smart one.

How many people are model citizens for 36 years & then all of a sudden decide to start threatening to punch cab drivers because of their skin color?

Since this jerk was convicted of a crime, he should have gone to the hoosegow to "pay" his "debt."

I don't. If it wasn't his first then I would say lock him up.

I've never heard this. I thought that bigoted people, if they argue for the side they are bigoted against, then they are likely to let it go.

I don't. If it wasn't his first then I would say lock him up.I think he's a bad seed, Suze. You just can't go around threatening to punch cab drivers or anyone else.

Now, in self defense, that's another matter. Like Jackie Chan!!

I don't and thought the name calling was beneath David's intellectual ability for debate. Then again, at times "knucklehead conservatives" can send me in a tizzy of laughter. Perhaps I'm just biased, a bit?

I'm not sure it's fair to the people at the church.

I agree!

Just like us having to study "Social Skills" as a subject in school for this year... NOT WORKING!!

Maybe both would have been better? Jail and weirdo-church-social-reform-judge-having-fun-sentance?

What do I think? I think it's bull****. The judge who presided over this case is a quack. Offering up church attendance in lieu of jail time is utter inanity.

Hmm progressives in Cincinnati are about as common as bible thumping neo cons in San Francisco so it seems like it might be motivated by something else:shrug:

There's a difference from visiting for a few days and actually living there.
