I know that it is a bit irrelevant but Avalon was on VH1 the other day and I realised (apart from that this song, albeit boring, is mesmerising!) that I haven't met anyone who is into Roxy Music AND Fleetwood Mac (apart for myself, that is :) ).
And I know they were never big in the US, but does anyone here like them?
I especially like the early years (you know, the Virginia Plain stuff).

Yes, I have always enjoyed their music. Rumor has it that they're working on a new project.

I've been a huge fan of Roxy since the beginning.

I know what you mean, though. Not many Roxy fans are also into "mainstream" stuff.

I love Roxy Music. I have their albums, and the box set, and I think Bryan Ferry has such a unique and beautiful voice. I'm really into them. Very glam music. I think they have reunited with Eno and they're staging a comeback as we speak. Not sure of anything else...all I know is that I like them with Eno, and I like them without him. No big difference to me, while others swear there is. It's always rested on Ferry for me. And More Than This is the best song, isn't it?

I just don't know what to go buy for "Roxy Music." I need a mix of their stuff and a weekend. I do know that Ferry's "Boy's & Girls" album is a FAV in my CD collection. Does that count??? lol :blob1:

Hi Elie!! I'm equal parts RM and FM fan. A rarity, I know. Something you might want to know: It is rumoured that Roxy Music with Brian Eno will be playing Coachella this year, which I believe lands on the last weekend in April. Swoon - how fabulous would THAT be??

I love Roxy .Bryan is my all time favorite male singer and yes Roxy is working on it's first new album since Avalon in 1982.Brian Eno is said to have written some songs for it too!The band has said that they will only release it if they are happy with the results so I'm praying they will be happy with it.

I totally love Roxy Music, their music is fantastic. Bryan Ferry has such an awesome voice. I love "Avalon", but I'd have to say my favorite Roxy album is "Siren", especially Love Is The Drug.

I love ROXY MUSIC...I think that "AVALON" is one of my favorite releases of all time...gorgeous...and I think Bryan Ferry is awesome.
Their reunion will be something I will certainly travel for this summer.

I love Concrete Blonde's homage to this incredible band, "Roxy"....

I agree. Their first two albums (with Eno) were great, but I think that Ferry is a genious. Besides he's the one who mostly wrote the songs, if I remember correctly. Now, More than this is a great song - I loved it when Bill Murray sang it in Lost in translation!!- but I think my favorite song would be "Ladytron" or "Mother of Pearl"
Anyway, so glad to find so many Roxy and FM fans! Yea:blob1:

Thank you. Because I'm always hearing, "Well after Eno left it wasn't the same..." and I think it's all bull. One of my best friends made me appreciate how brilliant Bryan Ferry was when she made this comp with Roxy and solo stuff and showed me a slide show with his stage attire. He's like the English Rudolph Valentino, and his voice is divine. Won me over. Eno is a'ight. I like some of his work and production skills, but he's not all the shiz to me.

Plus, Bryan is quite a handsome older guy. Not really fawning over him, but he kept himself together well- and that is essential in that thing he does.

I can't really name my favorite song. But More Than This is very blissful and perfect, so it's certainly one of the tops...along with Dance Away.

I saw him live in 2004 in Athens and he looks amazing -at least for his age.
And I think he has made some beautiful covers of 50's songs, the As Time Goes By album.

Actually, those songs are from the 30s. Ferry has always had a strong connection to older music. Standards, R&B, whatever. He's always done covers, and the influence of the older stuff can be heard in his originals, as well.

I do remember hearing Bryan's recording of Robin/Rainger's "Easy Living," which must certainly rank as one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. I don't think Bryan brought much to the table in interpretive terms (Billy Holiday need lose no sleep), but he availed himself of modern technology.

What I liked most about the As Time Goes By album and the Live In Paris dvd is that he did not use modern technology. If he's doing a Cole Porter song, it's acoustic guitar and stand-up bass.

I agree that he doesn't bring too much that's new to these songs (other than himself, which is a pretty considerable contribution) but it's always great to hear quality songs performed by quality musicians.

Plus, it gives me something to put on when my 85-year-old mother-in-law is hanging around that we can both enjoy.

Totally agree! That 's why those covers are genial! He doesn't have to put anything else to it but his smooth singing.

And by the way, in the Live in Paris DVD, he looks like a nice fella, too. I just love it that he looks more like the average english upper-class gentleman than a former coke head rock star. And I mean that the nicest way possible:)

Another thing I like about the performance on the dvd is that you can tell how much the band is enjoying themselves. Laughing and making faces at one another. They were really into it, and it comes through in the music.

I started getting into Roxy Music around Country Life (and the song "Thrill Of It All"), although, never got hooked until around Flesh & Blood...I think it was "My Only Love" and their covers of "Eight Miles High" & "In The Midnight Hour" that hooked me. Then Avalon was phenomenal all the way through. I finally saw them in concert during the Avalon tour...awesome. (and as a bonus, the opening band was Burning Sensations riding their popularity from the massive airplay of "Belly Of The Whale"...now THERE's an album that needs to be released on CD and hasn't yet been)

Bryan Ferry's post-Avalon solo material was really good, too (especially Boys & Girls & Bete' Noire).

It's interesting that you say that, because when I think of what got me hooked, I would say "My Only Love" and "Out of the Blue" , a song out of Country Life (which by the way, is one of the best records of the 70's, IMO).
