View Full Version : Grace Slick vs Ms Nicks.

I got a copy of the Jefferson Airplane bio "Got a Revolution!", by Jeff Tamarkin last night, and of course, you know the first thing I did was check the index for any mention of Stevie or the Mac. They weren't listed, but I did come across this quote by David Crosby about Grace's onstage presence:
When they got Grace in the band, that was just beyond belief. She was stunning. She had a power and intensity onstage that Stevie Nicks should only ever dream she could get. With Marty she was like a bullfighter with a bull. She would circle him and dart at him and pull from him and electrify him and touch him with bare wire. And Marty rose to the occasion
I don't know what year that was in, but what do you think? I've always thought Grace kicked serious ass, onstage and off, and she is captivating, but not in the same way as Stevie. Actually, I couldn't even imagine her doing anything like that-- she would probably rather gouge her eyes out with one of those "Jefferson Airplane Loves You!" pins, than twirl around in a shawl and boots. Thoughts?

Pffft! Exactly. I love Grace Slick. She's crazier than bat**** but I think that's why I love her. She's alright in my book. She's one of my favorite female vocalists ever.

I find it accurate. Grace Slick is unparalleled when compared to other "female rockers" if you ask me (actually, I think she's on par with Joplin). I've got tons of old Airplane bootlegs and she's absolutely ****ing riveting based on that voice alone. She grabs you by the balls and roughs you up. Some of that old footage of Grace is beyond words. One major difference between the two is that Stevie was very feminine in practically every aspect, Grace was not and that led to very different performances.

I don't think the 2 should really be compared. I'm not familiar enough with Grace Slick to really even add my 2 cents, but from what I have seen of Grace, I'm not really impressed with and I mean that with humility and love. ;)
No, honestly though, I like Stevie because her music and lyrics connect with me and her voice is so moving. The little I have heard of Grace sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Maybe I need to educate myself in the world of Graceland...
And I agree with Diss, that Stevie is kind of like Cinderella (the emotional, ultra-fem) and Grace is more a step-sister (skoal-chewing, man fighting).
ok, maybe I took liberty with his comments...so, sue me
oh, and by the way, no one, I don't give a damn, will ever have more intensity and power than Stevie during her Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman heydays - what does David Crosby know anyway? Well, you know what, I won't go there...

I absolutely agree with this.
I have never even thought to compare the two though, because to me the music is so different. Personally, I don't like as many Jefferson Airplane songs as I do Fleetwood Mac or Stevie songs, but that's just me.

Nothing. But Grace WAS intense, make no mistake about that. Stevie was intense too but she didn't have the crazy-stink-eye like Grace . Grace was scary intense, kinda like she might cut you in a dark alley if the mood struck her .

I don't know if they could really be compared fairly, Stevie and Grace. They have different dynamics... I'd put her up tere with Janis, too. I love the strength behind her voice. Stevie's got the voice, but she's so much more airy-fairy than Grace. That's one thing I've always liked about Grace, she doesn't take **** from anyone.

A good CD for her stuff is "The Best of Grace Slick" if you haven't heard a whole lot of it. It doesn't include the stuff I would have included on it, but it's a good starting point. Based on studio tracks alone, Stevie's never recorded anything as intensely brutal and vocally filthy as Grace did with "Wrecking Ball." The song's not her greatest, but christ, what a performance.

I was thinking about that as I read it. I've never heard Grace once sing a song that made me go, "Oh, wow, that's so beautifully poetic!" Not that that's a bad thing. It's just not her style. I think she's got a strong voice, though. I think that's evident in nearly every song.

I've never seen Grace on stage her, prime was before I was old enough to go to shows.I do believe she had a great stage presence more riveting than Nicks in her prime which I have seen ? I'm not in a position to judge.I do think out of all the women in rock she was more a direct precursor to Nicks than Joplin was .She even wore very witchy looking clothes and capes on occasion as well.Vocally, as one critic back in the the day put it both women had unique voices and 'sounded like some deep sea creature".As far as songwriting goes I'd have to give it to Nicks ,even Grace's 2 big Summer of Love hits weren't penned by her alone.Stevie had more of a sense for hooks and melody and was consistent for far longer.I do love Grace though and her like will never be seem again.

Well comparing them is a bit like comparing apples and oranges, they are so very different. But voice wise I'd say Grace hits and holds some notes that Stevie never will (not necessairly high notes...) Sorry guys but hearing her belt out Somebody to Love Live is pretty awesome.
As for intensity, Grace is awesome when she's not being TV filmed, Monterrey POP is a great clip to see her in, but the Fly video though good is not Grace at her best, she isn't a great TV persona. I wasn't around to see either of then in their "hey days" but my Dad saw Grace several times and she was one of the best performers he ever saw (and he saw them all including Joplin). Unfortunatly for Grace I often feel she gets overlooked in the rock category. And yes I'll agree that I would never want to meet her in a dark alley, although her book is a hoot, she is SO blunt with such take no sh*t attitude.
I do love Stevie as well, and live she is great, but a completely different type of intensity more one of emotion and bittersweetness, she doesn't have the "rip you heart out" intensity, even in the older boots I've seen from her.

I am repying to the first post a bit late, but I don't think that the two of them (Grace and Stevie) should be compared. I mean, they could, since they are both female rock singers, but I believe they are completely different and not just because Stevie is so feminine. It's the songs, the way of singing everything that is different. Like someone else said earlier, I would most likely compare Grace to Janice Joplin.
Now that I think about it, I am not really sure that I could compare Stevie to anyone, at least of that era. IMO, she brought a whole new style , in an era where female singers had to be either political and strong or not-so-feminine (like Joan Baez or Grace) in order to stand out in an onviously man-centered rock world, or too mellow and romantic (like Karen Carpenter perhaps?). What was new about Stevie was that she was not even a combination of the two, she went far beyond that.
By the way, in another thread I said that sometimes Stevie reminds me unintentionally of Marianne Faithfull, but I meant especially in terms of self-destruction and drug use (and how their voices used to be so beautiful when they were young and then wrecked by drugs). But I seriously think that M.F. , even though today is recognised as a significant performer, could have only dreamed of being as big/inspired/captivating/genuine as Stevie in the late 70's (and that comes from a M.F. fan).

Grace Slick -vs- Stevie Nicks
STEVIE NICKS
But what's the use in comparing them. Stevie has had a much longer run in the spotlight, is way way hotter, written better songs, and is the more powerful performer of the two without resorting to flashing her tits, using profanity and flipping the bird. Grace's comment about middle age rockers ...well speak for yourself honey. It gets embarrasing when they act like they did 20 or so years ago, which Stevie does not. One day there will be a time when we cant see the older artists perform, so until then they should stay out there. Imagine telling Stevie, Bonnie, Paul, Billy, Tom and all the others that your to old to perform.

I think it's so much harder for the women. Men can keep going on without much fuss. I wouldn't even put Paul or Tom on the list.
But there are some women who do and will go on.

i saw Grace with Jefferson Starship and I have to say, her presence on stage was a little shticky for my taste.
She was great in her time, and I'm sure Crosby was high as a kite when he made the comparison.
Stevie had a lot more in common with Janis Joplin on stage -
I like David Crosby's singing on Street Angel.

Actually I always read Graces comment about middle age rockers as to relating more to her "eras" rockers. And in some cases I agree with her, alot of the songs that were written during that time leave a bit to be desired when sung by middle aged people (imagine the Doors touring middle aged:eek: ). Minus the Stones I don't think there is any 60's group that I would want to see live right now...As for Grace even if she were still performing I could only think of seeing her out of curiosity and for a reasonable price, her songs just aren't ment for an older person to be singing them, they HAVE to be sung by a younger person, think about it does a 50 year old singing White Rabbit Sombody to Love or We Can Be Together (up against the wall motherf****) really appeal?
Stevie on the other hand is lucky in that her songs don't need to be sung by a younger person, however that has it's drawbacks as well, none of her songs defined an age, the way a couple of Graces did. But I don't think one way is better then the other, just different.

I too saw Jefferson Starship in 1983 (Winds of Change tour I think?) and she sounded fabulous, her stage presence was strong but, for all that, she didn't have half the originality as Stevie. Don't get me wrong, I do love Grace and her fabulous, off-the-wall persona. I could listen to "Fast Buck Fredddie" all day, just to hear that amazing tremolo. But she's hardly a songwriter to speak of and her "contribution" to Jefferson Starship always seemed commercially calculated in a way that damaged her reputation as the "It" girl of summer 1968.
I came too this post very late but I read through it and was surprised that no one mentioned the obvious disdain Slick has shown for Nicks over the years. Though FM toured with JS in 75, the VH1 "Women in Rock" special that aired a few years back reveals Slick can barely tolerate Nicks. When Nicks was being honored in (I think) the number 15 spot, Grace delivered a brfief but biting remark: "Oh, Stevie Nicks, the Magical witch." Her voice dripped with sarcasm and disdain. It was funny but also disrespectful--one of the things I love aboout Grace. I just didn't think she'd earned the right to criticize Nicks whose contributions to rock have been consistently remarkable.

One remark about Stevie and it's "obvious disdain for Nicks over the years"? The comment in question is nothing as you describe. In Stevie's segment, Grace was shown saying "Oh, the witch, the magic witch, I love her." Hardly biting or disdainful, and I heard not a hint of sarcasm in it. Why would VH1 include a disdainful remark in a special that's celebrating the women of rock and roll? I think you're reading too much into it just because Grace is a salty bitch. If I remember correctly, that interview took place after Grace contributed to the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack and Hole's version of Gold Dust Woman was brought up.
I just didn't think she'd earned the right to criticize Nicks whose contributions to rock have been consistently remarkable.
Are you serious? Forget for a moment that there would be no Stevie Nicks without Grace Slick (and Joplin) pioneering the role of the "female rocker" and look at Stevie's contributions over the years. If anyone can call them consistent & remarkable with a straight face, they shall get a sugar cookie.

I dont think Grace gives a rats A** about the music legacy anymore, she never went to the RHOF intros, I think she finds it all silly a bunch of people self congratulating eachother, exactly the type of thing they were rebeling against in the 60's. I would also bet she has moved on, she does have a kid (and a grandkid) and she is also an artist, Stevie on the other hand has little in her life but her musical legacy, hence her immense caring about it. I think in many ways Steive said it best, she (stevie) is still a teenager in her head, I highly doubt Grace is, and I think that's part of why she just won't tour anymore, I have no doubt she has the pipes, I just don't think she has the interest...
Oh and little known Grace fact, she is among the only performers to due all three festivals: Monteray, Woodstock, and Altamont, the rise, the pinnacle and the fall...
"I just didn't think she'd earned the right to criticize Nicks whose contributions to rock have been consistently remarkable. "
Oh and I'll echo dissentions opinion on this, are you serious!? Grace has a "right" to criticize anyone she wants in that industry, she paid her dues, penned some incredible songs, sang some major anthems and gave some awesome performances, she NOT stevie was one of rocks female pioneers, sorry but Stevie is a second generation who followed Grace, Janis, Joni, Cher, Mama Cass, Diana Ross...to name a few. Although I will consent Stevie is one of the first women to sucessfully be in a band and have a solo career at the same time, and many props to her.

Yep. Salty bitch. That's all. I don't think Grace was dissing Stevie, it's just that flowing shawls and chiffon are not Grace's thing so she had a bit of playfulness in her response about the grand caped one. As evidenced by my posting here and choice of signature, I love both Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks. Comparing the two is not exactly fair, because both are so different, as others have stated. Grace Slick's song "Dreams" is worlds away from Stevie Nicks' song "Dreams." I doubt Stevie would write a song with words like "I've seen those high-stepping sexy witches / Sons of satin, songs of bitches--all were there in my dreams." Grace's Dreams album cover does remind me vaguely of a Stevie parody (I believe someone brought that up...did the Stevie parody "Angel of Night" inspire you...? Sparky?).
Indeed ! I have the album. I love that you get that parody. I think the cover and that song are Stevie parodies (homages) of the highest order.
Grace is a provocateur and is as crazy as a ****house rat. But I love her, and think that she is a true original and rebel. With a powerhouse voice. It was simply not her goal to be an icon and rock star forever. Like someone else said, Gracie has a family and a successful career as a painter. And she was part of the old guard - the first generation of women rockers. Stevie was in the second generation. That doesn't mean anything other than timing, really. But Grace kicked down some doors for women. And very unlike Stevie, who has always talked about working her way into the men's world of rock gently, Grace grabbed them by the balls. Let's not forget that Stevie, not unlike Madonna, was sleeping with most her collaborators. A different kind of grabbing by the balls...
Grace could belt better than Stevie, but she never has personally touched me in quite the same manner that, say, "Storms" does.
And I don't think it was her goal to do that, either. She did her thing, and was done. Not everyone wants to do it forever.
She actually has the gall to show these in a gallery? Horrible.
I've actually been to a gallery in Sausolito, California that displayed lots of her work. I thought some of it quite good. It's Andy Warhol-like pop art. For those that only like painting by Rembrandt...you won't like it.

Well considering Stevie didn't even have a record deal by the time most of these women had risen to the top of their careers I guess I'm a little lost, I didn't say Stevie wasn't a major influence in rock, I said she wasn't a pioneer, big difference. Stevie was only a pioneer in perhaps the sense to have both a solo and group career going at the same time, but I already mentioned this and gave props to her, I just view her as an artist that came along after the first wave of female rockers.
