I know alot of people talk about 1975 and 1977 being big years in Fleetwood Mac's history, but to me 1973 is a big year also. I mean they released 2 albums and had the Fake Fleetwood Mac thing hit at the end of the year. I was wondering, how did they manage to record two albums in the span of 6 months. If memory serves me right, Penguin was released in april or so and Mystery to me was in September. ANd also I believe Bare Trees was releaed in September of the previous year, so they were really crankin out the music in that years time. Just like to get peoples thoughts. Thank you.

I agree, David, 1973 was a big year for Fleetwood Mac, and could have been even bigger if the band hadn't semi-imploded and the tour been cancelled. Mystery to Me was really gaining momentum, and if they'd kept touring behind it and promoting it, it might have been a really big album.

As for the fast-paced recording, that was just the norm for the band in those days. I bet if you had told Chris, Mick and John in 1973 that five years later they'd be spending more than a year and more than a million recording a new Fleetwood Mac album, they'd have laughed in your face. They were a struggling band going through a lot of line-up changes. They needed to get new product out there to promote whatever the latest incarnation of the band was. Bare Trees was recorded in just two weeks, I think, although I don't recall if that was the first sessions or the second, after the master reels were lost/stolen.

I like to think that MTM might've been HUGE, had Weston kept it in his pants, OR Mick have realized what a great album it was, and kept the band on the road.

I agree! I really, really like MTM. It's rare that I find an album I can listen to all the way through without skipping over a track or two, but I make an exception for this one. I likes me some Welch. :)

Remember, this was a time when young teenagers were listening to 92-KHJ play "One Tin Soldier" every afternoon precisely at 4 o'clock. I should know because I was on the school bus heading home every afternoon at the time, & the whole bus quieted down for the daily broadcast of "One Tin Soldier," a hook-filled megasuccessful song that AM radio owned.

Maybe, maybe not...but, they were gaining a "mainstream" audience. Had they been able to capitalize on their Midnight Special appearance, the history of Fleetwood Mac from that point on might've been VERY different.

Actually, I think THE most significant year in Fleetwood Mac's history was from May 1970 through May 1971. In that time, they went from Fleetwood/McVie/Green/Spencer/Kirwan to Fleetwood/McVie/McVie/Kirwan/Welch.

Songs I know for a fact they've played live that I someday would like to have live recordings of (if they exist):

Revelation
Night Watch
Remember Me (a Fleetwood Mac concert recording...I know Christine did this at the Bob Welch & Friends Live At The Roxy show)
Rattlesnake Shake (from 1975, with Lindsey on lead vocal)
The Bigger The Love ("Time" tour)

Was this appearance in '73?

Yeah, it aired 11/2/73 so it must've been recorded right before everything fell apart.

I put my VHS of it on DVD so I can rip it back to my computer & create an MPEG file but my e mail account won't attach such a big file.

If someone can explain to me how to post it (blush) I'll be happy to try when I can. :) I don't have the Chuck Berry intro bit though, I had to trim some of the fat to fit some things on to the DVD so...

And, here's another site, in case you have trouble with YouSendIt:

OK well the Rapidshare link didn't work & Yousendit looks like a page to e mail them. I mean, you guys can PM me your e mail addresses if you want, but I thought it'd be easier to post it here or some site that would post it & give the link. Yeah, that bootleg is SO bad (sound qualitywise) that I keep trying to forget it exists. (they also do "I Loved Another Woman" on that one, too...I wish it was a better recording)

They do "Bad Loser" too. And, "I Loved Another Woman" is radically different from any other live version I've heard...it's a Bob/Chris duet.

It's a shame about the sound quality. That bootleg has one of the most unique Fleetwood Mac set lists I've ever seen.

Perhaps you can upload it as a torrent file?? I hope I can get more guidance too. I tried Yousendit but it said the file can't be bigger than 1 MB & the MPEG I created for "The bigger the love" was 175 MB so no doubt the 1973 one will be twice as big (since there's 2 songs). Do I use DVD Shrink to shrink the MPEG? I'm sure there'll be software I can shrink it with but I don't know if it'll let me shrink it from 175 to 1! Any ideas on this I'm happy to try but the ideas need to be explained as well. :)

No.

There are three widely circulated boots from 1974.
The one you have is from Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY (I think that 11-8-74, is in UK format, it was recorded August 11th, not November 8th). There's another called Will The Real Fleetwood Mac Please Stand Up? (and also goes by Bermuda Triangle in a truncated form) recorded at the Record Plant (some boots say "Sausalito", some say "Los Angeles"). Both of those were recorded for radio broadcast (therefore the high quality of the sound), neither was an actual "open to the public" concert, though. The Chicago boot, however, IS an audience recording of an actual concert...a VERY poor quality recording.

You should try to get Will The Real Fleetwood Mac Please Stand Up? as the "companion" disc to your Hempstead show. The set list is pretty much the same, except with WTRFMPSU, you get Welch singing "Oh Well", too. (but, for that, you lose "Homeward Bound" & the little jam at the end called "Mystery To Me"). Jeez! Welch has probably done "Oh Well" triple the number of times Peter Green ever did it (if not more). If you figure Peter only played it with Fleetwood Mac for one or two tours before quitting FMac, and then not really having it in his own sets very often...and never with the PGSG (as far as I've read/heard). Bob played/sang it for the 3+ years of his tenure in the band, and even has played it during a number of his solo tours/shows. Welch even recorded his own studo version of it (both part one AND part two) on his latest album His Fleetwood Mac Years And Beyond.

As another feather in Welch's cap, he DOES pull off Peter Green songs VERY well. ("Green Manalishi", "Rattlesnake Shake", "Black Magic Woman", as well)

Oh, yeah...and on the WTRFMPSU set, they also do "Believe Me" which isn't on the Hempstead set.

And I really like the band's version of Bermuda Triangle in general here. The piano's quite jazzy, Chris sounds a bit more flashy here. And his story. Oh my god, it's fantastic! Epic. Yes, as good as the Hempstead show's version is, I like WTRFMSUP more.

Overall, that live-in-studio set (if that's what it is) sounds amazing, and there Heroes' songs are more agressive and vivacious than they are on the studio lp.

"Bad Loser" sounds real good, but I think "I Loved Another Woman" is even better...I guess because it's so radically different from the Green/Vito versions. If you're interested, here's the set list:

1. Coming Home
2. Green Manalishi
3. Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
4. Bad Loser
5. Sentimental Lady/Future Games(these 2 songs are together on the same track.)
6. Bermuda Triangle
7. I'd Rather Go Blind
8. Why
9. Nightwatch
10. Homeward Bound
11. Angel
12. I Loved Another Woman

EDIT: I've taken the links out because my virus protection keeps freaking eveytime someone tries to D/L these (& they obvioulsy didn't work anyways so...), hopefully before too long I'll figure out the torrent stuff & post the audio & screenshots Steve MacD asks about later in this thread. :)

Hope it works. :)

Thank you.

"Fake Fleetwood Mac" thing? ( I'm clueless about pre-1975, for the most part, although I like much of the music. )

Anyway, I'm sure they worked very hard and had high-standards, but still, I think comparatively, it was somewhat less intense back then. Many more people involved post-1974, also, I bet. It brings to mind Mick's comment in Destiny Rules about "sometimes I wonder" (whether it's actually necessary to have a Record Company). Sort of a "too many cooks spoil the broth" kinda thing, perhaps....

How can you argue that it was less intense if you freely admit you're completely clueless about it?

Recording five albums in a little over three years, touring incessantly, firing three band members (one because mental problems, one because of creative incompatibility, and one because he was screwing the drummer's wife), and suing your record company because they sent a different band out on the road under your name sure sounds pretty intense to me.

I think Mick and John would freely admit to moments pre-1975 that at least matched anything that came after in the intensity stakes. Particularly trying to continue a tour while your guitarist is screwing your wife - I mean, how intense do you want? Also having your main songwriter (Kirwan) losing his marbles and everyone not speaking to him for months - do you sack him or wait and hope he gets back to normal? And like having Jeremy Spencer just disappear into nowhere mid-tour, and you have to take a few days out to find him, thinking maybe he's dead... apart from the aforementioned manager-hiring-new-guys-to-impersonate-you-without-you-knowing trip...

I know that things got pretty wound up in the late 70s, but by then Mac was absolutely no stranger to intensity

OK, I'm experimenting with YouTube

Hopefully ths link will give you guys the link to see "Miles away" from the '73 Midnight Special:

http://www.youtube.com/w/Miles-Away?v=VDaDKiAsyms

If not go to www.youtube.com and search for Fleetwood Mac Miles Away & I'm sure it'll come up.

Unfortunately "Believe me" is more than the 100MB size that YouTube allows (as is the "Bigger the love" Switzerland '94 clip I was going to post here for ChiliD as requested earlier in this thread or a reasonbale facsimilie), but maybe if Miles Away works I can at least post MOST of those other 2 tracks there if I trim some off of those so they'll then be under the 100MB size.

Fingers crossed anyways. :)

WOW!

Thanks so much, John! And the video quality is fantastic!

Incredible. Bob Welch must have been one of the most unlikely rock stars in the world at the time. John's looking quite dapper back there though, and his bass work is just great on this, as is Weston's guitar (even if it's not quite as frenetic as on the studio track - and I wish he'd stepped up to do the three-part harmony). Mick looks hilarious and so... hungry. It's too bad Chris didn't get to break out any funky piano riffs on this song.

Phew! Glad it worked. :)

I don't know if it's possible to save it or not, I don't think so because I don't get that option when I right click on it. However, I'll try to cut the ends off of the others to make them below 100MB & this time I'll try their other option which is to post it just for friends (I went with their recommended choice before which was to post it public). I hope it doesn't get taken down & me thrown off the site for posting something copywrited. Since you can't save it I don't see why they get so wound up about that rule especially if I do post the future ones "just for friends" instead of public.

Anyways, it took a few hours to post so I might have to wait until tonight to post another one but I'll try it again with the others when I can. :)

I wouldn't worry about it, there's boatloads of copyrighted material on YouTube, including a ton of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks music videos. I'm sure they only offer a disclaimer to cover their asses in case anyone complains. Keep posting these videos for the public, more people should have the chance to see them!

And I believe there actually are ways to save video from YouTube. I don't know how to do it, but some people in the Stevie forum do. You may have to travel into the heart of darkness, David.

It works now. The problem with making a video on YouTube "private" is that you need to specifically invite other registered YouTube members to view it.

They do "Bad Loser" too. And, "I Loved Another Woman" is radically different from any other live version I've heard...it's a Bob/Chris duet.

John...

YOU ROCK!

Thanks so much for posting those videos.

Now, about the actual performances...

I have to say I was actually a little underwhelmed with "Believe Me" and, in general, Weston. Of course, with "Believe Me," I'm probably comparing it too much to the 1974 "Record Plant" performance, where Welch absolutely played the SH*T out of that song. "Miles Away" was pretty good. Overall, the band seemed to lack a bit of energy/spark, and Welch's guitar wasn't in the mix enough, while Weston was too much in the mix. I loved John's '51-ish Precision Bass (aka the Tele Bass).

"The Bigger The Love" clip was good. The chorus was a bit odd. I liked how Bekka sang the minor and diminished notes, though I think it would have been better if Bekka and Dave sang the backing vocals in a way similar to what was done on "John McVie's Gotta Band." Still, it put a smile on my face (at least until I began to wonder why they chose not to put it on the album).

My bad. Upon further notice, it was actually an early '70s Tele Bass custom. There's one like it on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Vintage-Blonde-Fender-Telecaster-Bass-1972-custom_W0QQitemZ7389636681QQcategoryZ38079QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).
