Someone just sent me a CD filled with Stevie demos and bootlegs. So, this is the first time I've ever heard the angry Smile At You. I think it is so much better than what was released, and not just because of the vocals, but the hard edge musically. I wonder why they changed it? It's very challenging (vocally) but it's not like Stevie was ever going to sing it live. Flaming, flaming, FLAAAMING! Anyway, just my two cents.

The angry version IS so much better...you can just hear how pissed she was....

Perhaps she's not as "angry" anymore :wavey:.

yes and she has said that she's not....

Also, the song is so musically simple- I don't think the whooping it up angry-screaming-shouting would really fly with Lindsey and his production ideas. I like the SYW version of this, but I think it would have been better served by a different producer and as a solo song.

Ew. I convulse violently at the very thought.

Knowing that Stevie Nicks is never going to scream & shout with fierce intensity ever again, I was perfectly content with the SYW version. Some of the production was over the top, the grammatical error chaps my ass, but it's one helluva vocal performance, even if she's audibly straining the hell out of her voice to give it. The way the song winds down is particularly good, too.

I hate resigning myself to this fact. I pisses me off to no end.

I am, too.

Yes, it's like a poke in the eye every time.

I don't think she's straining. I think it's pretty good. Now, "Silver Springs" on the SYW tour?? That's straining. And painful.....

The way the song winds down is particularly good, too.
That's my favorite part. Very "sunset" sounding and quite beautiful.

However, I think Lindsey could have done a better job producing her vocals. For some reason, he left her voice completely stripped down on all the tracks and then used that stupid mega phone effect far too often.

I second that. :D

What's the grammatical error, by the way? And aren't we used to these by now ...?

But seriously, I love this song. It's one of the first couple of her tracks I really got into. The album version isn't as angry as the demo I've heard [just one] but it's still quietly vicious and vindictive. I love Stevie songs like that ...

I think SAY on SYW was a scorcher of a vocal and one we had not seen on a record from her in years, maybe RAL

In fact, I think she had more than one of those on SYW, "Running Through the Garden" being another good example. A recent live scorcher of a vocal was R&R - as was B&B, albeit in a different way. So, she clearly still does it. I think at almost 60, it is just harder for her to sustain that level night after night in all songs; she is a human being after all. But, the rarer glimpses of it these days is a sight to behold.

As for SS on The Dance, I give the ole broad an A+ for having the sand to go there in the first place and then reprising that vocal intensity with "Sleeping Angel" on the Enchanted tour, which at times was an out of body experience for me.

So, it is toned down these days, but it still appears and dazzels.

Also, I think whoever cut the extra lyrics from SAY and other songs (presumably there) was an idiot as the songs just repeat and that gets on my nerves a la the ridiculous repeating of the SYW chorus ad nauseam.

"I should turned away and ran - just as fast as I can" is the error most see. Personally, I do not care about these things, because it is rock and roll and pretty much everyone does - such is life and there are worse things in it.

I like SAY on SYW too and agree the vocal is excellent. I have to disagree that RAL had anything resembling it though, unless you just mean intensity.

I think she vocally goes into the stratosphere on TTM and ICW, which is why I think she no longer sings these songs live. But, she hit the A in B&B a few months ago, so anything is possible.

"I should have turned around and ran"

I wasn't impressed. Add to it her "we keep upping the key each performance" lie and the whole thing goes in the dumper for me.

As for SS on The Dance, I give the ole broad an A+ for having the sand to go there in the first place
I was talking about the Say You Will tour version of it, which was abysmal and embarrassing.

and then reprising that vocal intensity with "Sleeping Angel" on the Enchanted tour, which at times was an out of body experience for me.
Holy ****, that was good! I freeeeeeeeeeeeeeked when she did that. Too bad she didn't pull off the ending, but I'm not complaining!

There's no way in hell she would do "Talk to Me" anymore. What's really lame is that in "Everybody Finds Out" she was just shy of the high notes from "Talk to Me".

She could probably do it, if she chose to- but, alas, I am a broken record.

Running Through the Garden on Say You Will was _awesome_. The first Stevie Nicks song I ever heard [knowing who it was, though at the time I was going, wow, that Lindsey Buckingham girl has an amazing voice! :distress: ] and the intensity of it blew me away, very raw and powerful. Still does.

Silver Springs on The Dance remains an out-of-body experience for me! Incredible stuff.

I believe Smile at You (the older one) was done live (as opposed to multitracked). that's what gives it its vibe. The question becomes, Why were the Fleetwood Macsters playing it all together? Just hanging out & loosening up?

I listened to old old (angry) one and then the SYW one in the car earlier and decided that I don't mind her vocal at all on the SYW one, I just liked the music on the angry one better. It seemed a "cooler" song when it had a harder edge to it. I can see why she isn't angry anymore (I would hope not anyway), but the song itself loses it's punch I think.

The one on SYW tells a different story from the angry demo but I find both equally great. I'd be curious though to hear a version of the track on her next solo album, I think it would be very different from the previous ones.

I love the angry version of SAY. so much passion and anger!! I have a whole cd of my "angry" music and that one is def on there. It's hard to find Stevie songs that scream.."IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'MMMMMMM PIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSEEEDDD" so I cherish the few I have. ;) I mean, I get that some of them need to be uplifting and inspirational, but sometimes you just have to scream. ahem..anyway...

does anyone know why they took out the other verse??
"and now you feel the light, you run from the darkness, etc"??

I agree. I love the angry version too. This version also rocks. I think it may be from the same time. Was wondering why the master isn't floating around of this one and if anyone has it would they like to share?

I agree. I think it was one of Stevie's best vocal performances! The "SAy You Will" version is interesting but I have a hard time listening to it has none of the power and fury of the earlier version. It's probably my least favorite track of Stevie's on "SAy You Will"...
