What happened to these people is tragic and wrong....
On another note- I have been curious about this:
Why is it that many of your posts are loaded with mis-spelling (like this one for example) while some of your threads are concise and spelled correctly (like your NFL pick thread). Please don't take offense, but it's like two different people submit your posts...?? This has really piqued my curiosity

I'm not saying it was justified, I'm just saying some people take their "No Soliciting" signs a little more seriously than others.
As for spelling...F*CK spelling.

Here is more information if anyone is interested: This was from the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, UT. Just terrible news that someone would do this to innocent people.
2 elders shot on mission in Virginia
Associated Press
CHESAPEAKE, Va. — An LDS missionary going door-to-door was fatally shot and a fellow missionary was wounded by an assailant who fled, police said.
The attacks happened just after 6 p.m. Monday in the Deep Creek area of the city, police said, when a man approached the two, shot them and ran away.
One of the missionaries ran to a nearby nursing home seeking help, police said.
The missionaries were identified by church spokesmen Dale Bills and Michael Purdy as Morgan Young, 21, of Bountiful, and Joshua Heidbrink of Greeley, Colo. Chesapeake police said he is 19.
They were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where Young later died, spokeswoman Cheri Hinshelwood said. Heidbrink was upgraded to good condition Tuesday.
Police described the gunman as a black male about 5-foot-10, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and denim jeans.
"This is close to home," said Bobby Gatling, who said he has lived on the block for two years. "Nothing like this has ever happened here before."
Parents of both missionaries planned to travel to Virginia.
Winslow Young, the grandfather of Morgan Young, said a church official visited the family in Bountiful on Monday night to inform them of the crime and then accompanied them to the airport.
Morgan Young was a graduate of Bountiful High School, where he excelled in computer science. He had spent nearly two years in Virginia on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was due to return home in March and planned to study computer science at Brigham Young University.
"He was a very outgoing young man and he was as excited as could be to be going on his mission," said Winslow Young, of Centerville, Utah.
The family was in regular contact with Young, who never expressed any concerns about his safety, his grandfather said. He described his grandson as easygoing and happy in his work for the church, and as a leader for the younger children in his extended family.
"Whenever we had the family together, the other grandchildren would be climbing all over him," he said.
Young was the oldest of four children.

If the perp is African American it might be interesting to find out if he was just a garden variety thug or was reacting to that Churchs' past blatant dehumanizing discrimination toward African Americans .Again nothing justifies the shootings .Just a thought.

I have a feeling that the shooter thought these young men had money because they were dressed in nice suits. He got angry when they didn't have large amounts of money and so he shot them:distress: It had nothing to do with their beliefs. Just my personal opinion.

Meh. Mine was meant to be sarcasm - perhaps bad taste, but whatever. I find thinking that just because these were african americans, the shooters must have been poor and jealous of the white men's shiny suits to be much more offensive.

Also, I don't think CelticGypsy meant anything racist by her comment. After all, most folks, black or white, don't go around just shooting people on the street for no reason. It's natural to assume there must have been a motive, and most of the time... again, whether the assailant is black or white... that motive is usually money.

Not that this act of violence is justified in any way, but perhaps now these intrusive religious types will stop harrassing total strangers to "hear" about their causes in the name of the lord. Sorry, but that whole thing makes me .

It was also funny as hell when they made fun of Mormons. Did you see the one where the Mormons ski up to an olympian with the Book of Mormon? Omigod, so funny. I used to work for a company with Mormon roots and it was difficult to get along with some of them if you were not Mormon. I hate the pushing of the religion as well. No reason to shoot someone though!
A friend of mine recently had to "counsel" a foreign student who had been approached by a Mormon in the subway. After the Mormon left, my friend asked the woman if she was okay, she proceeded to move to sit immediately next to her and asked in a thick accent, "Who was that? What was that?". She was frightened! It's just odd to approach complete strangers in this way.

I remember a huge temple that seemed to tower over EVERYTHING there. I know Mormon's are preferential to not drinking and that bars close early in Utah and liquor is kept under very strict supervision.

Provo is worse than SLC from what I am told. There aren't any bars, you can get liquor at a restaurant but you need to join their "club". It's all very very strange.

Funny anecdote... as some older Ledgies might recall, I used to have shoulder-length hair and a beard.
Now you kind of have to picture our house... when you come in the door, there's a very small foyer and then you can see up the stairs, where there's a stained glass window at the top.
So... here I am, long brown hair and a beard, answering the door to three Mormon girls on a Saturday afternoon, with the mid-day sun shining through the stained glass window that's basically behind my head.
Well, the look on their faces was PRICELESS.
If I had had my wits about me, I would have said, "may I help you, my children?"

I believe she toured the Tabernacle, not the Temple. Non LDS are not allowed in the Temples. Only worthy LDS are. They have to show their recommends before going inside the Temples to do work. Women also work in the Temples. Women are not allowed in Priesthood meetings but go to their own meetings during Sundays called Relief Society, which was started to help the charities. From my understanding, most LDS women run churches and homes behind the scenes anyway. They are the backbone of that religion. The men would be lost without the women. Just like in real life. lol

Well thanks for the education. I'll let them know that mere heathens are not allowed in the temples so they should stop lying about where they were! Their story about that visit is the best. Apparently there is a very large statue of Jesus in there with a star spangled domed ceiling (I probably have some details of this wrong too). Anyway, my friend Lauren had her camera with her and Mike asked her if she'd be taking a picture, she said she wanted to save them, and he said, "What, Jesus isn't good enough?" Oh man that group was so irreverant! The best!

That is the Visitor's Center where the large statue of Jesus is located. LOL Temple Square is a pretty impressive place and I am sure your friends were respectful. The cameras and security guards would have made sure of that:p

There's information on the net. Here is only one example.

Didn't Stevie Nicks live in UT at one time as a young teenager? With her family living in AZ and CA during her time as a child and young woman, she must have had a few LDS neighbors or friends.

My sister-in-law works with a lot of Mormons. One in particular is quite nice to her & my brother, since they (my brother & SIL, I mean) moved to AZ & have no family nearby. They invited them to dinner & it was OK, with two huge exceptions:
No alcohol.
No caffeine.
My SIL was practically going through withdrawl (she lives on Diet Pepsi & coffee.) She said next time she'll be bring a flask of coffee with her to hide in her bag.
