The latest I've heard about the 13 miners trapped in a shaft is that they tried to contact them but had no response. It doesnt look too good. I have alot fo respect for someone that would take a dangerous job like that. Not only ids there the threat of explosions from methane, but they have to be down there in that dank air. Here's hoping against hope they come out alive.

Nope. I'm not a coal miner's daughter. I come from a background of farmers and electricians.

TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. -- Family members were told Tuesday that one body was found in a West Virginia mine where 13 miners were trapped for more than 38 hours.
John Groves, whose brother Jerry Groves is among the trapped miners, said Gov. Joe Manchin announced about 9 p.m. that rescuers found one body in a mine car.
Red Cross volunteer Tamila Swiger, who was inside the Sago Baptist Church, said family members were hyperventilating at the news.
The body was not identified.
There was no immediate word the fate of the other 12 miners.:distress: :distress: :distress:

Yes, thank God they've found the 12 remaining miners alive. When they announced finding the first one, my heart sank -- I assumed the others shared his fate.
I feel awful for the family of the one who didn't survive, but the fact that anyone lived... let alone 12 of the 13... is amazing.

Glad that 12 have been found alive. I hope that they are OK. I do feel bad for the family of the one who did not make it.

how it went from reports that 12 of the 13 were alive to reports (MSNBC/Rita Crosby & CNN/Anderson Cooper) now stating only 1 miner was found alive...I feel for those families after the roller coaster they are on...
Truly a sad day.

Truly a sad day.Oh no! :distress: I just read a Yahoo News article about 8 minutes ago, and they were still saying all 12 were alive.
Damnit, I just checked Yahoo News again, and they're reporting the same thing in a one paragraph update....
Families Say 11 of 12 W.Va. Miners Dead
TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Family members report that 11 of the 12 coal miners who were initially thought to have survived an explosion in a coal mine have died. The sole survivor is hospitalized.
This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Yup. The one report was false. There is really is only one survivor, who is in serious condition at my hospital. :(

Apparently one of the family members received a cellphone call from a rescuer, misinterpreted the information, and that's how the whole sad mess started.
I saw the "good" news break. Rita Cosby started by saying that "AP and MSNBC have confirmed...."
Confirmation should be getting official word from authorities. The standard for news has sunk so low.
I can't watch the news either. I refuse to watch cameras shoved in the face of grieving people.

Yup. They went to print with the "confirmed" story at midnight.
I'm thinking this incident might change the way the news is presented for the good. It's major.

I really hope so, Curtis. This era of 24 hour news and the mad rush to be the "first" has some major problems.
And my paper, the SF Chronicle, has the accurate news story because it went to print later. But it still chose to run a picture of two women celebrating the "good" news", which I find to be in poor taste.

Can someone be held criminally or civily liable for this false information coming out and putting those families through this? if not it should be!! Someone's head MUST ROLL:mad:

I was watching Anderson last night (or early morning) when a woman approached him onscreen and told him that only one survived and that word had to get out. That was quite shocking. Him and Randi Kaye looked like they were going to go on a murderous rampage when they realized that they were reporting bogus information.

I'd like to know why officials let the media report bogus information for so long without attempting to correct them. It doesn't make a lick of sense. It shouldn't be coming from some random woman off the street, it should be coming from officials who had the correct information to begin with. It's Election 2000 all over again.

How did he have his facts straight? He reported that the 12 were alive at the same time everyone else did.
They all blew it; in their eagerness to be the first to report, and in their own obvious excitement (which is understandable), they reported information as fact without confirming it with the appropriate officials.

Everyone's so caught up in their image and making things look good that they screw everything up. How's that for over generalizing? What I mean is, politicians and others in the public eye won't apologize when they screw up because of how it will look, plus they will ignore "bad" information even if it is true. They need to have some f*cking character and integrity training. They obviously have completely lost sight of what it means to "serve" the public.
Then there are the news outlets who have made selling the priority over reporting. That is a shoddy way of prioritizing the stories of our people.
We haven't even gotten into the negligence that company must be guilty of for such a heinous thing to have happened to their workers.   Anderson will likely be rolling some heads tonight!

SHouldnt have taken someone on the street to do that though.

the most about this situation is how those families had to feel from going from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in mere moments.
Very heartbreaking...
