Artists or vocalists? I guess it doesn't matter but my list would probably be ordered differently if it was just going by vocals. Don Henley would be ahead of Lindsey (gasp!) and Tom Petty would be somewhere near the end. But anyway. Overall:
1. Lindsey (constant)
2. Tom Petty (pretty much in order from here on out)
3. Don Henley
4. Jackson Browne
5. Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy)
6. John Lennon
7. Bob Dylan
8. John Denver
9. Freddie Mercury
10. Bono
Honorable mention:
Bruce Springsteen
Tom Chaplin (Keane)
Ben Harper
Chris Isaak
Robert Smith (The Cure)
Elliott Smith
Joseph Arthur
Anthony Keadis (RHCP)
Cat Stevens
Iron & Wine
Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand)
Johnny Cash
Elton John
Sting
Micheal Stipe (REM)
and because Christy put him first, I'll admit it - A.J. McLean :p.

Off the top of my head... and after #1 they're in no particular order:
1. Chris Isaak (if I could have anyone's singing voice, I'd want his)
David Bowie
John Mellencamp
Lindsey Buckingham
Tom Petty
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Freddie Mercury
Mark Knopfler
Barry Gibb (Yep, I'm a Bee Gees fan.)
Rufus Wainwright
Rob Thomas
Ronan Keating :o

1) Francesco De Gregori
2) David Bowie
And then, not in order:
Willie Nelson
Yves Montand
Prince
Bing Crosby
Sly Stone
John McCrea (Cake)
Robert Smith (Cure)
Kelly Jones (Stereophonics)
Romy
Thom Yorke is the tops for me here. By far.
The, of course, John Lennon. I went through these two pages and was kinda shocked that John wasn't mentioned more than he was. In my opinion, he had one of- if not the- greatest voices in rock and roll. Just incomparable.
Others, no order: Jeff Buckley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Art Garfunkel, Freddie Mercury, Nick Drake, Roy Orbison, Rufus Wainwright, Bruce Springsteen,Bryan Ferry, James Blunt, Sting, George Harrison, James Brown, Lindsey!!!! and Luciano (hey, why not? I like nice Italian opera stuff now and then).
I have forgotten a lot of people, but this will do for now.
I *kind of* think Don Henley's voice is nice, but his music is too nauseating for me to place him up there...which is why I have mentioned him here. And I like Neil Diamond's voice all right, and his new album, but the older stuff? Uh, no.

Mmmn. Fun.
Clint Black (so much fun to harmonize with, right in Sparky range)
Chris Cornell (yeah he oversings sometimes, but when he is on, it is nuclear)
Layne Staley
Roy Orbison
Jon Bon Jovi
Dwight Yoakam (such a sweet twangy edge)
Burton Cummings (if only for the classic "These Eyes")
George Michael (the ballads, *swoon* "Kissing a Fool", "Cowboys and Angels" *triple swoon* he's as butch as a feather boa but melts my heart )
Michael Hutchence (vocally, sex on a stick, this guy)
Geoff Tate (of Queensryche...so underrrated, in his prime this guy could blow the roof off a place without a mic with no break in his falsetto...doesn't even sound like a head voice)
Yves Montand
Coolness. I thought I was one of the few people who actually listened to him. Amazing. Totally forgot him.

7. Alex Kapranos
Glad to see I'm not alone. He's got one helluva sexy voice. I loved that recent Entertainment Weekly review that said he sings by "yelping and crooning and conjuring everyone from Ray Davies to David Byrne." Listening to his voice on "Shopping For Blood" gives me an erection. One of the best Franz songs, too.

Carlos Gardel (probably no one has heard of him-but he was from Uruguay, South America- and was around in the 30's to 40's I think...Car accident _died in his prime...
Some people said he actually was born in France, but he is "uruguayo" in any case, and grew up in Argentina, that's why he sang Mi Buenos Aires querido...
And he died in a plan crash just taking off from Colombia during a tour

Freddie Mercury
Seal
Barry White
Don Henley
David Gilmour
Bryan Adams
Elton John
Nat King Cole
Ray Charles
the 3 bee gees when they sang together...,
Sorry Lindsey (and Sting and Bono and Elvis)..
Yeah, I agree with most of the names on everyone's list, but I have to mention Noah Hunt, of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd band. He's a very talented singer & songwriter.

Romy
I remember when the "Rushmore" soundtrack was very popular and a few of my friends were into it because of Elliot Smith's song. And one of Montand's songs is on it, and they were really surprised at how...dramatic his sound was. I think they were impressed. My mom is a really big fan of his, so I was into his music at a younger age (though not aware of who the hell he was back then).
He's a great actor as well. And Marilyn Monroe was totally in awe of him to top it all.

Ahhh....the men...
My favorite male singer is the man with a thousand voices, Robin Zander ...he has, without a doubt, such a magnificent voice...I never, never, never tire of listening to him.
Tom Petty is fabulous because he is so distinct...kinda like Stevie in a way, because when he is singing, you KNOW it's Tom...and, in my home, Tom is king...I dont think a day goes by when he isn't played. Love that man.
Also, can there be a better band than the Heartbreakers??? :xoxo:
There are some tracks where George Michael can turn me on like no other...and, in that same vein, so can Michael McDonald...but it really depends on the song...
Charlie Sexton does it for me every time...always has...he is just the dirt to me...he is so incredibly talented...
The late Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) vocals always moved me just in the same way that Scott Weiland can...incredible pipes, those boys...
Michael Stipe gets props cause he is like a female Patti Smith to me...very emotional, very to the core...gotta love Michael...
John Lennon, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra simply because they were voices of a generation at various peaks and valleys within the last 50 years of pop music...
Of course, Lindsey Buckingham...what can I say? I love the man....
Last, but certainly not least, Joey Ramone had such a distinct vocal style and he was one hell of a sweet guy to me and everyone that I ever introduced to him, and I think I sing the loudest when the Ramones are on, so he certainly has a place on my list...Gabba Gabba Hey!

Ya know - it used to be the Club Kids, the whole Nirvana tripe, etc. Now, it is these in their own heads too cool for the room - falsely erudite (I know this because I have conducted surveys  ) swooping front hair, aloof kids who think because their voice has a little pain in it (no doubt from the night before) - they are artists. Ha, I was just going to say that the nouveau queers must rock your socks off because of all those pent up homosexual urges.
And some of them aren't duds at all, and you have heard ample stories to attest to that.
I know, honey, I simply forgot the "e" in dudes.

Oddly enough, men usually don't cut it for me in the music department. There are a few, though.
Robert Plant
Stevie Wonder
Steven Tyler
Steve Perry
George Michael
Jeff Buckley
Chris Cornell
Eddie Vedder
That's about it.... Elton John is for piano and songwriter, not so much the voice. David Crosby is brilliant at times, but he's too all over the map. David Bowie can be brilliant as well- however, I find his vocal stylings to one dimensional. Mick Jagger has got ****ing passion all over the map, but he's not a very good singer. Michael Stipe is awesome, but too one trick pony. Mellencamp? Yeah, but only occasionally stirs me.
Eh.

I can't believe I forgot Crosby. I hereby amend my list and make him #11.
David Bowie can be brilliant as well- however, I find his vocal stylings to one dimensional.
You suck. :p Oddly enough, a lot of my favorite vocal performances from him over the years have come from his past couple of albums and his live DVD of the Reality tour ("Life On Mars?" is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever heard). "Sunday," "Cactus," "I've Been Waiting For You," "Afraid," "Slip Away," "New Killer Star," "Bring Me the Disco King," "Looking For Water," "Fall Dog Bombs the Moon," "Something In the Air," "Pretty Things Are Going To Hell," "Hallo Spaceboy," etc. All more recent songs and some of his best vocals, imo.

when most of the names you listed are very good (Yes, Richie Sambora is a great singer...Proof is his first solo album "Stranger in This Town", Better album than anything Bon Jovi or Jon Bon Jovi solo-wise has ever released.)
Also ya listed my favorite named singer of all-time: Brian Johnson of AC/DC...How can you go wrong with such a great name???
Sambora is an excellent singer, I love "Stranger in this town", went to Bon Jovi three years ago and he sang "I'll be there for you" and I gotta say...best vocal performance of the whole show.
Cool to know you love Brian Johnson as well. :D

His first solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name is excellent, with "Laughing" being my favorite song (Joni on phenomenal background vocals is hard to beat!).

I love David Bowie. Love. However, for me, it's his songwriting and the overall style of the complete package that gets me going- not his voice. He's a good singer, but he doesn't kill me.

I have all his solo albums, but by that time his voice had changed. Ten years of shredded his vocal chords while smoking cigarettes, drinking and doing coke really did a number on his timbre. Manic Nirvana and Fate of Nations are great albums.
I have to admit, his last album with The Strange Sensations was one long bore.................. *** snoooooooozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze ***

The seven sisters and the seven sons
At the gates of heaven when day is done
But the seven sisters all have sinned
And old Saint Peter won't let them in
Come drink the cup that fills me up
Like a wall of fire and a sea of blood
I'll climb the mountain and escape the flood
When lies are torn we hear the horn
Beyond the pale of love's prevail
I see my lovelight coming after me
I just find them incredibly creepy, especially the way they're sung in such a sinister tone most of the time.
Although his latest weirdo trip with The Doors is borderline pathetic. Too bad.
