So, here I am, poking around Joe Ely's website, looking up song lyrics and what-not. I'm seeing him on New Year's Eve, it's been awhile, he puts on a great show! Anyway, I'm looking at the photos and I found this. I wonder what song they were doing??? I knew Joe had gone on tour, opening for Tom Petty, but had never heard about them performing together, let alone Stevie joining them onstage! It's from Lakeland, Florida - wonder if this was another live "Insider" night? (Edit: I just looked at David's list again, it was!) There are a lot more great pics of Joe w/ various musicians here:

That photo looks like it could have been taken at the same performance as the quick glimpse we get to see of Stevie & Tom on stage in the "Sometimes It's A Bitch" video.

What about the boots and that unmistakable profile? It's like a Rorshach (sp?) - her profile is the dark part and her hair is white, especially the white "poof" under her chin. I also don't think it's "Street Angel" hair - I think the lighting just makes it look that way. I believe her hair in this pic is just like it was for the Insider and Stop Draggin' videos, without the beady hair clip thingies.

Here's another y'all may not have seen. I don't think I need to explain who the other person in the pic is.

Sorry so grainy. Two things, DO you know when this was taken? ADn the other is I wonder what song they were singing? I hope it was Blonde In The Blue T-Bird or Finally Found A Girlfriend and not Magnet And Steel, cause I dont like that song at all, but knowing how big a hit it was, I'd guess that was probably it.

I don't know what year it's from or what song. I just looked at the file name and no clues there either. Walter was the opening act for Fleetwood Mac on several dates of their Rumours tour, so I assume the picture is probably from 1978 and the song likely was Magnet and Steel, but could also have been "Only the Lucky" or "The Blonde in the Blue T-Bird" which are included in a set list from his tour diary. Another possibility is that it was "Sisters of the Moon," which Walter had also been playing during that tour, though I don't know if Stevie ever joined him for it.

But I could be wrong.

Though my two favorites of the songs Walter and Stevie recorded together, are "Only The Lucky" and "Just The Wanting."

My only issue with "Magnet" is that, of all the songs he could have been known for, it really isn't one of his best. It's not even his best from that album... that title, IMO, goes to "Unloved."
But then again, I've always preferred his work with Lindsey over his work with Stevie and I'm not biased or anything. ;)
P.S.
Anybody lucky enough to be living in the Nashville area should head over to Franklin tonight. Walt's doing a show at The Pond. Show starts at 9:00 p.m.

It's not even his best from that album... that title, IMO, goes to "Unloved."It seems that die-hard fans often don't consider an artist's best known songs to necessarily be the best representation of their body of work. We tend to see so much more to love and recommend in the songs that tend to remain "best kept secrets."
There are definitely other Egan songs (at least on the two albums I have) that are maybe more "worthy" than "Magnet & Steel," but I still find "Steel" irresistible.
But then again, I've always preferred his work with Lindsey over his work with Stevie and I'm not biased or anything. ;)For my money, and from the songs I've heard, I think Stevie and Walter play off of each other more effectively than Lindsey and Walter. There's a chemistry in the former pairing that is somewhat offbeat and really works. Whereas the Egan/Buckingham collaborations seem to have more "expected" results, IMO.

I assume that the two albums you own are Fundamental Roll and Not Shy (which are the only two to include Stevie). Those are great, but I think that some of the best Buckingham/Egan collaborations came later on like "(I Won't Be) Too Young" from Malibooz Rule and "Animal Lover" from Wild Exhibitions (where Lindsey's bizarre grunts from the song after which you've named yourself resurface). I also adore "The Loneliest Boy" from Mad Dog which features exquisite guitar work from Lindsey and some of Walter's best lyrics.
One thing that I really love about Walter and Lindsey's work together is that you can really tell how much fun they were having. After all, Walter has stated in at least one interview that Lindsey was his favorite person to work with.

So "Buy More Walter Egan Albums" always ends up fairly low on the priority list.
One of these days though, and I'll definitely start with the songs/albums you mentioned.

Aahhh... but "download some MP3s" doesn't cost a thing. If you go to WalterEgan.net there are some full length downloads, including two brand new songs. None of the MP3s are of any of the songs I mentioned, but they're still really great.
Also, if you pm me your address, I can mail you a cd copy of "Wild Exhibitions." The album is long out of print with no reissue in sight, so Walter wouldn't make any money off of it regardless. My copy was burned from second hand vinyl, so it's a little fuzzy, but it's better than nothing.

Actually, David, it turns out that you're not wrong.
Here's what Walter told me:
"That picture was taken at my concert at the Anson Ford theater in Hollywood...opening act was a band named Jiva...and Stevie came to sit in with me...it would've been late spring 1978, one of my first shows in support of the Not Shy LP."
