...when noone shares your interest in FM?
I will explain myself: I am very very glad that I have found this forum because apart from the information I can get, I have finally the chance to chat with people that like the same music I do.
Where I live, FM have never been particularly popular -or should I say as big as in the US (don't ask me why:shrug: ) and even if they had been in the past, nowadays I have the feeling that nobody listens to them except me (that does not normally bother me, but it is kind of sad that I can't find so much stuff about FM here - books or rare recordings).
But what I really hate is when people become really sarcastic when they discover that I am into them. I know you can't always share the same music tastes, but when it comes to FM, they act as if they were completely laughable! The other day I gave Rumours to my best friend, who is supposed to be really into music, and she was like "how in the world can you listen to this stuff in the year 2005??" (as if it matters what year it is when it comes to good music). And what is even more frustrating is that she likes groups or singers that have openly admitted that they were influenced by FM (like, let's say, Tori Amos) but when it comes to FM, she thinks that are silly, aged, or I don't know what else. And istead of being happy that she got one of the best records of all time as a gift she went on with her "my-music-tastes-are-so-sophisticated-I-listen-to-Bjork-and-David-Holmes" kind of thing.
Of course I am not expecting everyone to like them, but I think people should appreciate bands that have been a landmark in music history and even when they don't like them, they should just say: "not my taste exactly, but I see why they were that big". When you can't do that, I think that you are just clueless about music.
In the meantime, I'll just watch my Dance and Live in Boston dvds on my own (or with my boyfriend who is kind enough to listen to them, while not a fan, just because I like them!)
I am sorry for the long post, just needed to vent !
Love and merry Xmas to you all

You wouldn't be living in the Netherlands, would you? That all sounds pretty familiar, though it has become better the last few years. Back in the nineties, when I was still in school, I wouldn't even dare to tell some people I was a fan!
Just do your own thing, don't let other people dictate your tastes :) At least you're original ;)

Thanx! No, I live in Athens, Greece. The same happens in the Netherlands eh?
I still don't dare to say that I am into them. I know it's stupid but when I get reactions like "what? are you crazy??" I am really bored to answer back.

I'm in Ireland and there's a bit of interest scattered here and there ... but not in the same realm of obsession as me -- and Angelick Witch :wavey: !!

If people respect your opinion then it can be cool to have a band that nobody else is into, it can be sort of 'your' thing. That's certainly how it is for me. In that regard it's sometimes good to not be one of the crowd.

But when people keep just slamming you down for it, it can be hard ....

I've certainly found solace in these boards anyway.

It's not quite as dire here in Canada, but I have yet to find someone who is as hard core as me. I meet people who say they like FM and I ask what their favorite song is and they say "Don't Stop" or the like. I wanna talk about Tusk demos and of course they have no clue. Most of my friends only like FM because their parents have Rumours, but I guess it's better than nothing. Most people respect me for my musical taste anyways. It's pretty obvious what a music geek I am. But I always say, you can't argue with Fleetwood Mac. Maybe they're not you're thing, but you can't listen to Rumours or a Greatest Hits compilation (I say that because I would give a newbie a copy of Tusk or TITN...I'd say you've gotta be into it before you appreciate those) and not get how solid this band is.

And that's what I have to say about that.

With me, its hard to admit to it, because most of my friends like Zeppeling and the Beatles, but yet loath Fleetwood Mac. But a lot more people know about them then I thought. And I actually know someone else who is more obsessed than I am...and its my old gym teacher...lol. On this trip I went on for the school, we talked for like a half hour about it. My friends were kinda like "uh...why did you just talk to her about a 70s band for 15 minutes?" but it was pretty cool...

my wife hates fleetwood mac. we've been together for 20 years and i can't seem to crack her. i took her to see lindsey on his OOTCT and she was really impressed. she also went to see FM w/ me on the Dance tour. I think she has issues with Stevie. All of her highschool boyfriends had crushes on Stevie.
Oh well. She does appreciate the musicianship but I can't make her a fan.

On all other musical fronts we connect - so whathayagonnado?

Just do your own thing, don't let other people dictate your tastes :) At least you're original ;)I hear you. Aside from two good friends, who are just as excited as I am when I get new material and present it to them (they are not that internet savvy themselves) nobody here really cares for FM. My boss listens to them, actually asked me a copy of the FM greatest hits album for Christmas, because she used to listen to them all the time back then, but other than that she doesn't understand the obsession. Everybody else just goes  . Most of the time I don't even tell people. When a discussion about music comes up, and FM is mentioned, I just go 'oh right, yeah, I like them'. No need to get in yet another argument about whether they are that good that you need to collect bootlegs, demos and what not else. They just don't understand.

lol! Your youthful naiivity is so cute!
Fleetwood Mac strikes a big chord with Ireland. Fans still turn out in droves to even see tribute band 'Rumours Of Fleetwood Mac' when they play here every once in a while. And Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac has been on the lower end of the album charts since ..forever,and about three or four years ago Rumours reached number 11 in the album charts having hung about the top 20 for ages and ages following renewed interest in it! There's alot of seriously obsessed fans out there!
BTW 100-102 Today FM I think are doing an hour special on the Mac on Tue at bout 6pm..listen out for it! :)

It's very similar in Italy, when I'm lucky the answer I get is "Fleetwood Mac? The band with Stevie Nicks?" Or "Ummm... Rumours, right?" .
My friends usually are not surprised, my "strange" tastes in music and cinema aren't a news for them. And when I meet someone who makes a not so nice comment I go for fun, saying something like:
''Yes, Fleetwood Mac, you know the kind of band that use real instruments and not these unpersonal plastic computer samples tailored on sclerotic and easy- to-please audiences.

If I want to play a bit more:
Old? Well, not really. It's like to say that most prog rock even with very fresh bands like Taal are already dead. Well, Spock's Beard are a bit. It's just that to listen to copies becomes tiring don't you think? And their lyrics are archetypical, and blend very well also with today's input, Say You Will in 2003 was quite enthralling.

If I want to be really bad:
Out of times? That's interesting, it's like to say that Tsai Ming Liang movies aren't disconnective elements of 2000's vibes, or that Grotowki doesn't replicate through classics hot jazz rhythm to talk of today's society. I'm surprised you think that. Didn't you like Oasis by Lee Chang-Dong?

It doesn't have to make sense (it helps but it's not necessary), and when they start weeping or become suddenly silent you can go away smiling.

I have simila frustrations although I don't widely let it known although I have toled more people lately given how excited I am with next year's Stevie tour down under because I can't contain myself, they don't knock me down or anything but generally they just couldn't care less and find it wierd I am travelling to three cities to see the same person perform.

The other day I gave Rumours to my best friend,

my friends do like FM, (those of my generation) but they got tired of my fanatism, ha ha. Specially in 1997 after coming back from the Reunion concert in NYC (nov.). I used to play for them the Dance CD every day...

Sometimes I get upset because they do bad jokes about my taste for FM. But now I understand them. A new friend arrived to the group, he's a fan of Gloria Estefan. I like her but.. OMG I get sick every time I visit him. It's always Gloria, Gloria, and Gloria (cd, tape, dvd, mp3, ipod, and even vynil albums!!!)

Now I've undestood and forgiven my friends. Sometines it's so annoying to have a fanatic friend.

Europe doens't respect any Rock hero.
For me?? I'm proud beiing a Ledgie. Not into following trends and more.
If it don't fit,.. don't force it. Just look what's around you.
Example. We (Netherlands) have a chart where everyone can vote over the internet. Since 1999 up till last year, the best three.
1. Bohemian rapsody - Queen
2. Hotel California - Eagles
3. Child in time - Deep Purple.
Every storyteller can give my a warm feeling when it comes to these songs.

People say Dutch people are very open minded, progessive and so on. Maybe??
And maybe,.. that's our problem, we forget our pop roots, we suddenly like Racoon, Direct and more. Just so we have arguments and the laughs are on our side. It's not easy. But i just dan't care. My friends react like OHH NOO when i play a cd or DVD. I don't mind.
That is why this board is excisting, right?
We didn't get any info, before the internet. No shared files, and so on.
Now we have this, an exceptional site were we can slip our toughts to this world. It's the best we can do.
If Greek, German, Spanish or Dutch won't discuss FM with us, well,... we are ledgies . We are used to the fact that FM is what is is. But we still enjoy it, don't we??

Dear God yes! Also, fanatic 12 year old cousins. That's a tough one.

I don't normally tell anyone about my favourite band unless they ask me.

I never try and convince anyone to like them because I probably won't succeed.

If they don't like the band then fine - that's their loss.

I usually go to concerts on my own because I can't be bothered explaining. Yes that's Stevie. Yes Mick is very TALL. Yes that is the Grand Prix music - now can you SHUT UP AND LISTEN?

Hi there...
Right, I know this wasn't addressed to me but I'm only about twenty minutes over the border in Dundalk .... so ... hi! :wavey:

You can download the show from www.todayfm.com. Go to the Last Word page and go to previous shows. The sound quality's not brilliant and as far as I could see they just played a lot of songs, not really much discussion ... it's there if you're interested though.

What, you were going to fly over for a concert? I thought we went over to you guys for the concerts!

The Point is where they played last time round. I wasn't at that concert but I've been to The Point a lot of times, it's a very nice venue. In comparison to the big places in America and England it's very small but that's fairly good because no matter where you sit the band members aren't going to look like a dot on the stage.

I hear there are plans to knock the whole place and build a new one. Which is a pity, it's a lovely building. :distress: Is that true?

EDIT: By the way, I wasn't at the concert because at the time I wasn't into the Mac ... that came about three months after they'd been and gone. D'oh!

Lol!
*sigh* not quite the same, though.

What I don't get is that we always have a lot of so-called indie bands playing here and they are always sold out but we rarely get the chance to see bigger or older bands like FM.
Maybe they find it a bit unprofitable to play here- it's a small country and it's far away and they will need extra planes instead of trucks etc. I don't know.

HI:) , Well I rarley venture out of "stevie land" as some call it, but I read your post and wanted to say hello :wavey: What I have done in that situation is first find out what kind of music my friend tends to like. Then Insted of giving them a copy of say "Rumors" or "the greatest hits" I will give friends compilations of songs that I know they will enjoy. "FLEETWOOD MAC" with all of its various and different albums and members and their albums has bound to have something for everyone. Blues: oh well is awsome for those blues lovers : pop song: anything by christine "experimental indie brilliant but incoherent : lindsey or even if they like something random like techno play them stevies "planets of the universe remix, or since they seem to be mentioning what year it is right now play them the new Dreams remix. There is alittle something for everyone, you just gotta find it. but I agree with you, it can be frustrating but at least we have each other on the ledge!

Man, I feel pretty fortunate after reading this thread that I have a handful of friends that really like the Mac and two in particular that are as obsessive as I am. Like I'm talking daily Stevie references, travelling the Northern hemisphere to see them, drunken sing-alongs to full concerts obsessive. It's nice. :p

Anyone else find people don't realize who the songs are BY? I went vinyl hunting with a friend and I put The Very Best in the CD player and she kept saying "I didn't know this was Fleetwood Mac. I like this song."

LOL!
I wanted to say the exact same thing. When the friend (the one I gave Rumours) heard GYOW and The Chain she said: "Oh, that's FM??". It seems that she had known the songs forever (and to my unpleasant surprise had chosen to ignore them - that I don't get. How can someone not like those two particular songs??). And she said she had never heard Dreams before. How is that ever possible?
By the way (and a tiny bit irrelevant), apart form what my friends like or don't like, I sometimes get the feeling that FM don't get as much credit as they should IMO. I mean, if someone asks the question who would come after the Beatles and the Stones as the most famous bands ever, to me it's pretty obvious that the answer is Led Zeppelin (even though I am not into them), Pink Floyd (that I like) and FM. (I would NOT say the Doors though - I can see why Morrison had such an appeal but as a band I don't think of them as really significant- I hope I don't offend someone by that:angel: :sorry: ).
But nobody I know would give the same answer.

*glomp!* You _do_ like me!! :p

All I get is funny looks from adults ("You... like Fleetwood Mac? Aren't they... you know... a bit... _old_ for you?") or just lots of slagging from people my age. Maybe there are people in Ireland who like them, and all the evidence points that way, but I don't think they live in Carlow!

I wouldn't change them for the world though! And there is _one_ other girl in the school who likes them. And I have Sahara!! *glomp again!*

... I can't believe there was a discussion about Irish Fleetwood Mac fans and I missed it! Dash it all...

I don't know. I'm pretty recent! Sahara got me into them, so I had to wait for _her_ to get her act together!

Well, like I say, I don't doubt there are Irish Fleetwood Mac fans. I just doubt they're my age ('cept Sahara and the girl in my school), and I doubt they're in Carlow.

And then again, it doesn't take much to sell out any Irish venue, they're not what you'd call big. I hope it was good enough and popular enough for them to come back though!! You listening, Stevie? Lindsey?

Im a percentage person and i would say the chances of them comming back are in the High 80's. Basing this on the fact that Fleetwood Mac Have been on the go so long now that they will definately have a fairwell tour (i'd imagine ) before they hang up their notes. Now due to the fact the original founders originated in the UK they would probably like to acknowledge those fans also by touring the uk and Ireland
Dont however assume their next tour will in anyway be a fairwell tour.
With that in mind they could possibly tour with a new album in 2007 im assuming here that lindsey will never complete his solo and stevie will throw in a few tracks and it will kinda be an "organic" thing again but hey "it feels weird". Anyway after another album or to at the most we will get the biggest FM Blast ever so get readdy for that one folks.

I will be in the front row at the Point and the Odessey all being well. See you all there.

Rock on MAC Daddy

I'll be there in the seat beside you. Can. Not. Wait!

PS: Virtually every tour they've done in recent years could have been a "farewell tour". As Stevie says: "Let's just say a prayer and hope it goes on forever!"

Which means _I'll_ be in the seat beside _you_... Definitely can't wait! *still waitng patiently but excitedly at airport* :blob1:

Amen, Stevie. I was thinking that myself. But they're going to keep going forever. Stevie and Mick'll _make_ 'em. No more getting away like Christine. John and Lindsey are good and stuck now!

Its extremely frustrating because all the girls I've ever dated have hated Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. One girl, it grew on her as we dated and she now likes them. But several of my other serious relationships hated them right from the get-go.

That's one of my breakers. If the girl hates Mac or Stevie, then it isn't going to work. They don't have to be a fan, but if they say hate....cya! Mac and Stevie have been around me for over 30 years so if I have to choose....:D

A bit off topic, but Top5 Fleetwood mac was on Vh1 last night! Wish I had known it! I missed numbers 5 and 4:mad: . Number 3 was Rhiannon (an old live footage, I didn't see what it was exactly), n.2 was Big Love and 1 was Little lies.
Does anyone know what they other two might have been?

Oh, I didn't have that either until 2 months ago. (We don't get those channels in Greece, you have to have something like a cable-satellite thingy. My fiance arranged it a while ago so that he can watch all those ESPN channels (he's crazy about NFL), so I take advantage and watch VH1..)

Anyway, I am not even sure if it's the same VH1 they have in the US. Probably it's a european version or something. And to tell you the truth, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie are not so often on it as I had expected :( .

Well, I wouldn't care if it was European. And it'd have to be better than nothing. I think you need satellite or really, really good cable to get VH1 in Ireland too. I don't know anyone who has it that doesn't pay an awful lot every month or whatever...

Actually we do pay something like 50 euros per month and I was very reluctant at first because of that, but -believe me-tv programs in Greece are horrible most of the time, so we decided to do it so that we can watch a decent movie or program. And since we spend most of the week nights watching tv (I hate to admit that, but it's true!) we figured it's ok.
I guess in Ireland things are not that bad maybe?

I wouldn't really know enough to tell you for sure, I don't think... Well, I used to be the same, I used to watch TV almost every night. Now I'd be on the computer more instead. I don't know if that's any better, but at least I keep in touch with people and I can get the odd project or whatever done... Very odd projects... TV in Ireland is generally very bad, I would say. Lots of people I know only have four channels, and there's a lot of crap on. Lot so people get cable or whatever for the English channels. I don't know if a lot of them are actually much better than what we get, but at least there's more choice!
