Does anyone know anything about the 2CD set "Helsinki Carousel"? The Mac sure look happy on the cover... I saw it on eBay - looks damned expensive. Is it worth it, or is it bootlegged elsewhere? Any ideas?

And does anyone know about the song 'Got A Mind To Give Up Living'? One of Peter's a la 'Worried Dream'?

Neither of those tunes are written by Peter...they were both originally recorded by BB King, but I don't know who actually wrote them.

"Got A Mind To Give Up Living" is most commonly known as "All Over Again".

Don't be fooled by the bootleggers sales pitch. Sure, it may be a production pressed CD and the graphics are cool, but still the same, you can get those shows (with very good sound quality) for free via trades...and maybe even a BitTorrent download.

Ah, right - thanks. I knew BB King did 'Worried Dream', but I knew nothing about the other song. Looks like Peter didn't do GAMTGUL very often, then...

Thanks - it seemed like the guy was doing a bit of a hard sell - and I wondered why I'd never heard of it... I'll do some investigating and see if I can get a trade. Cheers! :blob2:

"I've got a good mind to give up living" was released on at least 2 bootlegs, one from January 4, 1970 (Fillmore West) and one from January 31, 1970 (New Orleans).
On the first, Peter Green played the best solo he ever played, in fact one of the most heartfelt blues guitar solos ever recorded. My English is not good enough to describe the feeling that this song gives me.
Although the song is also known as 'All over again', these words are actually not sung in the song (?).
It was written by Carl B. Adams, whoever he was/is.

Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield also recorded a very good version.

I've got a good mind to give up living, and go shopping instead
I say, I've got a good mind to give up living, and go shopping instead
To pick up me a tombstone, and be pronounced dead

When I read your letter this morning, that was in your place in bed
I read your letter this morning, that was in your place in bed
And that's when I decided, that I would be better off dead

It read, there is no use you looking, or ever hoping to get me back
Oh, there's no use you looking, or ever hoping to get me back
Yes, because it's all over now, and baby you can bet on that

Actually the "Helsinki" cd features two different shows, the first one is from San Francisco Carousel Ballroom June 23 1968, plus a later gig recorded in spring 1969 in Helsinky.

I do have both in my collection and I must say that the Carousel Ballroom show (2 cds)is really interesting, Paul Butterfield guested on 4 tracks (very good interplay between his harp and Peter's guitar on "I Loved Another Woman") and , being a soundboard recording, sound quality is really excellent.

Helsinky 1969 ( again 2cds) suffers beacause of its poor sound quality, but I'm more than sure that music really make up for that..........

Stay Green,

Mario.

BB King re-recorded the song with Mark Knopfler on his recent 80 album. Knopfler does one helluva great Peter Green imitation on the track.

Yes, you are right Chili, that is a good version and M.Knopfler did his best to sound like Peter Green.

But Greeny's fans know damn well that he did some wonderful version of the song, all available on the many 1969/1970 live gigs usually in circulation.....

Which is your favourite one?

Mario.

I know I was at the Warehouse in New Orleans in 70. A 21 year old Pilgrim at the time:nod: Pete was incredible, I thought to myself at the time...he sounds just like BB. Jumping at Shadows did that for me that evening. Danny
played counterpoint..........and Jeremy was Onnn!
The Dead didn't suck that night either. Owsley blew the sound system...and
they came out and gave us an unplugged (way before it's time) Workingman's
Dead............then got busted...and we got to hear it all again the next day..
to go their bail:cool: Kismet...Yin and Yang?? That stuff really did happen back then.
Our kids will never have those weekend festival/essence grokking/Transcendental events. Ever!!!
I have it on good authority only we were Stardust and Golden:)
Good times...oh God what grand times, music, politics and sexual freedom
without fear. We were blessed then.
I'm 56 now. Very proud of my Haiku's:thumbsup:

One of the best PG versions of I Got A Mind To Give Up Living is Stockholm, Sweden 1 Apr 1970. Isn't it written by BB King? I saw him sing it a few tears ago anyway.
Mike Bloomfield does a great solo on the same song on Paul Butterfield Blues Band "East-West" album, also on the boot "The Unicorn, Boston, 1966"

******

And BTW in these days perhaps you go shopping if your baby leaves you, but in the old hard blues times one did "go shot me instead" ;-)

And I have to agree with GJK earlier in this thread that the Fillmore West show, january, 4 1970, has the most outstanding Peter Green solo ever. Emotionally and the use of dynamics......man what a performance.

Well...we just have to sigh in pleasure, right? And he was just a young man,
to be able to play that way? Incredible.

I agree as well. Among a number of outstanding performances, I think this is Peter's finest.
